Product assembly

As usual, the surface of the workbench is a durable surface for a wide variety of work. Therefore, to install the countertop we must choose quality boards thickness of at least 20-30 mm. We install them sequentially on the existing table surface, tighten them with self-tapping screws, trying to leave as few gaps as possible.

The new tabletop should be slightly larger than the old one and have an overlap of 15-20 cm on each side so that equipment can be hung comfortably and securely. Where electrical equipment is installed for the workbench, you can put double layer boards to make the base stronger.

Arrangement of tool storage boxes

Now we should take care of the boxes in which we will store tools, fasteners, and various parts. These should be strong wooden boxes convenient systems, with durable fittings. How to assemble wooden boxes and work with various forms, we already know, and therefore we will not go into details. It is only worth noting that each element of the box must be treated with protective impregnation.

There should be several boxes, for example, 2-3 on each side. It is worth first assessing the placement and making markings so that the installed fragments do not interfere with comfortable work at the finished workbench.

Equipment installation

The classic equipment in this case is a vice and wooden clamps. In addition, you can install a high-power stationary drill, a milling element, some turning equipment. But most often the workbench is built as an ordinary plane for comfortable work, and the equipment is purchased separately. For a summer house, a drill, a grinder, or a circular saw are enough.

Installation of equipment should be well thought out in terms of convenience and safety, all fastenings must be checked and securely tightened. If the equipment requires connection to electrical network, you should correctly calculate the power, the cross-section of the wires, and make the connection itself correctly. This work may require the assistance of a qualified electrician.

We combine carpentry and metal workbench

At our dacha we don’t have much time, space or money to make two separate workbenches for work, although we may need both a carpenter’s and a metalworker’s workbench. To reduce costs and time loss, and also not to take up a lot of space in the garage or shed by installing two bench tables, we suggest making two from one at once.

To produce a practical work station we will need to increase the surface area slightly. This may require strengthening the base with additional parts of the frame on which the tabletop will rest.

When working part ready, half of it should be covered with thin stainless steel sheet. It can be secured with self-tapping screws or special rivets. It is advisable to cover not only the top plane, but also the end elements, which, by the way, can be done along the entire perimeter.

Materials for production

  • Wooden beam 50x100 mm for the production of support lintels, supporting the supporting part of the tabletop;

Carpentry workbench: step-by-step instructions

  • First, you should determine the size of the workbench - its working surface and supporting part. For example, we chose a surface size of 80x160 cm, and the size of each supporting part is 60 cm. The height of the workbench is 85 cm - this is the overall size, so it should not be confused with the height of individual parts of the frame.
  • Secondly, prepare a drawing (perhaps take something from the diagram above).
  • Thirdly, put down dimensions, mark and cut the material.

You can start by assembling the tabletop, for the production of which we will need to create a body around the perimeter (be sure to take into account the overlap on each side). The body will need to be strengthened wooden beam, thereby creating increased strength.

We install the supporting part of the frame on the support block, and only then the tabletop.

For connections, we recommend choosing bolts and nuts that will forever hold together wooden parts with through passage and clamping. You can also use wood glue for greater reliability and strength of each connection, apply it to the parts to be glued and only then tighten the bolts.

While working, make sure that the dimensions are consistent and that the levels are maintained, since in further processes related to the workbench, such errors can cost time, effort and nerves. Only on a high-quality workbench can you work with pleasure.

Equipping the workbench, preparing for work

In order not to repeat ourselves, we suggest paying attention to the previous sections, since a new workbench can be equipped and equipped in exactly the same way as one created on the basis old furniture.

The only question that remains is installation and preparation for work. You will need to install ready product on a flat surface, indoors. To make a workbench from metal, it is necessary to draw up a drawing with the dimensions of individual elements. When assembling a folding or solid workbench from a board, you will need a regular set of tools.

The metal sample is heavy, the wooden one is not very durable. You can combine these two materials in one product: make a desktop from wood, reinforce the tabletop with a thin sheet of iron.

Preparatory stage

First you need to determine the shape and dimensions of the workbench and choose the location for its installation. To ensure that the workplace is always well lit, the light should fall from the left or directly. Often, sockets with extension cords are mounted on the surface of a workbench.

The length of the table top must be sufficient for processing workpieces and placing tools.

Convenience during work depends on the height of the workbench. In order to determine this parameter, you need to stand up straight and bend your elbows. The distance from the floor to the arms bent at the elbows is optimal for a stationary or folding workbench.

Assembly instructions

To begin with, 4 identical legs are made from a metal corner. The supports in the upper part are connected by a similar angle using welding machine. The resulting structure should be 50 x 100 cm. To provide the table with additional rigidity, pieces of corner are welded at a height of 10–15 cm from the floor. If desired, you can provide racks that serve as fastenings for drawers and shelves.

Wooden boards must be laid on the frame, tightly secured with bolts, having previously provided the metal frame and the boards themselves with technological holes for fasteners.

Wooden countertops cannot withstand increased loads. For protection, galvanized iron of suitable size is used. It is secured on top of the boards with self-tapping screws.

When cutting, metal edges often become covered with burrs. For safety, it is recommended to sand them with a file.

For greater stability, the legs at the bottom can be equipped with metal plates with holes for fasteners. It is also recommended to screw the workbench to the floor. On the side of the structure adjacent to the wall, they are often installed metal screen. It is convenient to place small tools on it.

The workbench, which will be made from these materials, has quite impressive dimensions: table length is 220 cm, width - 75 cm. The overall design and large table top allow you to place it in different ends table vise and, for example, sandpaper or other tool.

The first step in making a workbench is cutting the available material into elements. Profile pipe intended for the manufacture of frames. The steel angle is designed to create stiffeners. It is cut into pieces and a power frame is formed from it. Also, a steel corner is needed for edging the tabletop on which the boards will be laid.

The steel strip is intended for the manufacture of guides on which the side panels will be attached. This material will also be used for brackets for fastening boxes and plywood.

Second step - welding power frame workbench. The tabletop elements are welded first - 2 pipes 2200 mm long and 2 pipes 750 mm each. The frame must be welded so that another frame of corners can be welded on top of it, into which the tabletop boards will be laid. To reinforce the tabletop, it is necessary to weld a few more after 40 cm steel pipes, which will serve as stiffeners.

Then 4 side legs are welded along the edges of the workbench. Their length is 900 mm. Power bridges are welded between the legs to strengthen the structure.

After basic frame ready, you can start welding the structure for the boxes. To do this, square frames are formed from steel pipes, which are welded to the tabletop on both sides of the table. The frames are reinforced with longitudinal stiffeners.

The third step is making a frame for the tabletop. Two steel angles, 2200 mm long, and two more angles, 750 mm long, are needed to make the frame. The structure is welded so that wooden boards fit inside it.

The angle frame is laid on a pipe frame and welded. The result is a reinforced tabletop, 8 cm high with internal stiffeners.

The metal frame of the workbench is almost ready, all that remains is to weld the panel sheathing for attaching the tool. This requires one metal corner with a length of 2200 mm and 4 corners with a length of 950 mm. Two elements are attached to the sides of the structure and two in the middle for reinforcement. The tool panel is welded to the tabletop.

The frame of corners and pipes is ready. You can begin to strengthen the structure. Brackets are welded to the sides of the table, which are cut from a steel strip. A total of 24 parts are needed. A hole is drilled in the middle of each bracket. Using these holes, the side and back walls of the plywood table will be attached to the metal frame of the workbench.

The fourth stage is making drawers for the table. Plywood is cut into blanks, which are screwed together with screws. The number of drawers depends on what will be stored in the table. If the parts are small, then you can build 3 drawers; if the parts are large, then 2. It all depends on personal preference.

You can place drawers on both sides of the table, you can mount pull-out structures on one half, and regular open shelves on the other.

After the drawers are assembled, you need to weld metal strips with holes between the sides of the drawer compartments. To these holes with inside the slides for the drawer guides will be attached.

The fifth stage is laying the boards into the tabletop frame. Boards 50 mm thick are cut into pieces of a certain length. If you have a long board available, then you need three blanks with a width of 245 mm and a length of 2190 mm. If there are no long boards available, then you can lay the blanks across the table. For this purpose, wood 205 mm wide is cut into 10 pieces 740 mm long.

Before laying the wood into the table frame, it must be treated with an antiseptic solution. This will protect the material from rotting and damage by beetles.

Then it is imperative to paint the entire metal structure workbench. This will protect the metal from corrosion. It is best to use a weather-resistant and anti-corrosion coating option. You need to paint especially carefully welding seams. Drops of metal and unevenness are recommended before painting works clean thoroughly. This can be done using an angle grinder with a metal grinding disc.

After the structure has dried, you can begin laying the boards on the countertop. They should not be driven too tightly into the frame. This is due to the fact that wood tends to expand and dry out when temperature and humidity change. It is better to leave a small gap of a few millimeters between the boards. The surface of the wood needs to be sanded, this will make it easier to lay the metal sheet on top of the wood. The boards around the entire perimeter of the table are screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws.

The sixth stage is fastening the top steel sheet. It can be welded to the countertop, but there is wood inside the structure, which can ignite during the welding process. Therefore, it is best to attach the steel sheet with hidden screws to wooden boards. The metal must first be painted on both sides with a rust converter. This covering material looks like transparent paintwork, is easily restored and reliably protects the metal from rust. You can also paint the metal tabletop with the same paint that was used to cover the frame. It will be beautiful, but over time the paint may scratch and the table will not look very new.

The last stage is installing the drawers on the guides and attaching the plywood to the side walls, shelves and power shield in front of the table. This work can be called finishing workbench. After work with plywood is completed, it must be coated with a composition that will protect the material from exposure environment. Also, do not forget about the design of a power shield for tools. You can attach special hooks or screws to it, from which the necessary things will be hung.

To make it convenient to work at a workbench, you can attach a special lamp with a bendable stand to the power panel. In this case, you can optionally direct the flow of light to the desired location.

A vice is an indispensable attribute mechanic's workbench. It is not recommended to attach a clamping tool that weighs several tens of kilograms to the tabletop itself. It is best to place a metal gasket 1 cm thick between the metal of the table and the tool. You need to drill holes in the gasket for the anchor bolts. Then, in the same places, drill holes of the same size in the tabletop. The entire structure is fastened with anchor bolts.

Making the base

First of all, you should make the frame of their beams with your own hands and fasten it in such a way that the base is as rigid as possible.

Most often, first, according to the drawing , grooves are made, and only then the entire structure is assembled. In this case, all joints are glued and fixed with clamps. If the workbench is collapsible, then all parts of the frame can be connected using metal corners.

The vice is applied to its location, and the location for the holes is marked. A vice is inserted into the finished recess and fastened with bolts and nuts to the table top so that its lips are located flush with the surface of the table top.

You also need to build stops on the carpentry workbench, which you can purchase or make yourself. It is not recommended to use round dowels or bolts as stops, since dowels do not secure parts well, and the bolt head can damage the workpiece.

It's quite easy to do pegs or rectangular stops. With their help, you can securely fix parts of any size. These stops are made from hard wood. You can simply make them rectangular, widen them at the top, or cut them out with a jigsaw and make them with a “spring.”

You can make holes in the tabletop for pegs or build it up with bars required thickness, screw them to the edge of the table and cover the other side with a bar. In order to fix any part, the sockets should be located from each other at a distance of half the travel of the vice.

The stationary workbench is ready, now you can work on it. However, if there is not enough space to install a desktop, then you can make a collapsible carpentry workbench.

The procedure for making such a table is similar to that described above. Its main difference is that connecting parts requires use of bolted connections.

The advantage of such a workbench is not only that during its operation you can easily replace any parts. For example, every table becomes loose over time, and it is much easier to simply tighten the mounting bolts on it than to strengthen it with new screws and nails.

Of course, building a workbench with your own hands is not an easy task. But if you work hard, you can end up with an excellent and comfortable workplace with various devices, behind which work will bring joy.
