The question of which one often causes a wave of controversy. This is often called the front square in Warsaw. However, it is difficult to call this correct, because most of its territory is occupied by two shopping centers and a high-rise building.
This place is also claimed by Freedom Square in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov. It occupies 11.9 hectares. Its shape is not rectangular, so it stretches from 690 to 750 meters in length, and from 96 to 125 in width.
Despite its considerable size, it is not a record holder. The largest square in Europe is actually located in Samara. The confusion with Freedom Square dates back to Soviet times. Perhaps it appeared thanks to the writer who called it “the widest and largest.”
At that time, Kharkov was one of the most powerful industrial centers, the pride of the local population, which could also influence the active maintenance of this legend. This belief is firmly rooted, which is why many people still consider the Kharkov landmark to be the largest.
The largest square in Europe

Story
Previously, Kuibyshev Square had other names. During its history, it managed to visit the Cathedral and Communal. This place was identified for it back in 1853. Samara was a fairly prestigious city, so it had to have a decent-sized area. The planned parameters were 525 by 325 meters.
On the site of the musical theater was the Cathedral, which could accommodate 2,500 people. Its construction lasted from 1869 to 1894. At the same time, the squares were founded, named Nikolaevsky in honor of the tsar's heir.
After the revolution, the square changed somewhat. It began to be called Communal, and its size increased. It took the new government two years to destroy the cathedral. It was replaced by the House of Culture, which housed an Empire hall with 1,250 seats, a library and a museum.
In 1935, the largest square in Europe began to bear the name of Kuibyshev. In 2010, there was an attempt to return its historical name, but city authorities decided not to support this idea.

The placement of the House of Culture on the square made it an important center of city life. During the war, performances were staged here many times. In 1941, a military parade took place on the square at the same time as the parade on Red Square in Moscow.
In 1942, at the Kuibyshev Theater, Shostakovich first performed the legendary 7th or “Leningrad” symphony. He began writing the second part of the symphony during the siege of Leningrad, and it was in Samara that he completed his work.

Samara
The second largest Kuibyshev Square is located in the glorious city of Samara. It is located in the city center and has a rectangular shape, which is rare. This became possible due to the destruction of the Cathedral in 1930. At the same time, it was renamed from Cathedral to Communal, and after another 5 years it received the name Kuibyshev Square. In 1938, a monument to the great revolutionary V.V. Kuibyshev was erected here.
The total occupied area of the main attraction of Samara is 17.4 hectares, of which 8 hectares are paved, 7 hectares are park areas for recreation and 2.4 hectares are occupied by the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.
Kuibyshev Square is a favorite vacation spot for guests and residents of the city of Samara. Various celebrations are held here: young people celebrate the New Year en masse, military parades in honor of May 9 are not much inferior to those in Moscow. Saint Petersburg
Moskovskaya Square is a favorite place for tourists and residents of St. Petersburg. Couples in love make dates here, married couples go for walks with their children. You can get to Moskovskaya Square from anywhere in the city both by private car and by public transport. There is paid parking nearby. Car owners can leave their vehicle and enjoy a walk.
For the convenience of residents and guests of the city, the Moskovskaya metro station was opened in 1969.

The next largest area is in the town of Bordeaux in France. On both sides there are green spaces - park areas, with a total area of 6 hectares, which is half of the entire territory - 12 hectares. The sights of La place des Quinconces amaze with their beauty and scope. For example, two rostral columns 21 meters high, white marble statues or a picturesque fountain sculpture.
Looking at the sculpture, one gets the impression that an army on horseback is emerging from the water.
Kharkiv
Many believe that Freedom Square in Kharkov is the largest in Europe. But it is in fifth place in our ranking, although its size is also amazing - 11.9 hectares. Its shape is unusual: on one side it is rectangular, on the other – round. In the rounded part there is a park where you can relax in the summer heat.
The rectangular part was originally conceived as a venue for public events. In winter, an ice town with ice sculptures is built here, and the New Year brings together many people, both young and old. For several years in a row, during the warm season, tons of sand were brought to the square, and fairytale castles and sculptures were built from it.
Near Freedom Square there are 2 metro stations – “University” and “GasProm”. In addition, the place can be reached by buses and private cars.
