What is the largest area in the world. What is the largest city in the world by area? The largest cities in North America by area

Every country in the world has a huge number of cities. Small and large, poor and rich, resort and industrial.

All settlements are remarkable in their own way. One is famous for its landscapes, another is famous for its entertainment, and the third for its history. But there are also cities that are famous due to their area. So, here are the largest cities in the world by area.

The largest city in the world

This title belongs to the city of Chongqing, it is located in the central part of China, and its area is 82,400 square meters. km, although this includes not only the territory of the city itself, but also the area of the territory subordinate to the city. According to official data, the city occupies an area 470 km long from east to west and 450 km wide from north to south, which corresponds to the size of a country like Austria.

Chongqing is administratively divided into 19 districts, 15 counties and 4 autonomous counties. According to 2010 data, the population is 28,846,170 people. But more than 80 percent of the residents live in rural areas; only 6 million people live in the city itself.

Chongqing is one of the ancient cities of China, its history goes back more than 3000 years. In the late Paleolithic era, primitive people already lived here. This is due to the fact that the city was founded on the site where the Jialing River flows into the deep Yangtze.

The city is surrounded by three mountains: Dabashan in the north, Wushan in the east and Dalushan in the south. Due to the hilly landscape of the area, Chongqing was nicknamed "mountain city" (Shancheng). It is located at an altitude of 243 meters above sea level.

The largest cities in the world

Often, the degree of urbanization reaches the point that, as cities expand, they are so closely intertwined with production, transport and cultural connections and merge into one whole. Such a cluster of “fused” cities is called an urban agglomeration.

One of the largest is the New York agglomeration, formed around one large core city of New York. Its total area is 30,671 square meters. km, population – almost 24 million people. The Greater New York metropolitan area also includes Northern New Jersey, Long Island, Newark, Bridgeport, New Jersey's five largest cities (Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Paterson and Trenton) and six of the seven largest cities Connecticut (Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, Danbury).

The largest cities in North America by area

But New York is not the largest city in North America, or even in its own country. The total area of the center of the largest agglomeration is only 1214.9 square meters. km, it consists of 5 districts: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island. The population does not exceed 8.5 million people. Therefore, New York ranks only third on the list of largest cities by area in North America.

Second place goes to Los Angeles, the city of angels, located in the south of California, its area is 1302 square meters. km. The city is the center of Greater Los Angeles, an agglomeration with a population of over 17 million people. It is also better known as a center for the film industry and entertainment in the fields of music and computer games.

The largest city in North America by area is Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The area of the city is almost 1500 square meters. km, and this territory is home to 9 million people, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city was built in a seismic zone, and earthquakes occur here quite often, which determines the low level of buildings and, accordingly, its length and area.

Once upon a time, on the territory of the modern Mexican capital, there was a settlement of the Aztec tribe, called Tenochtitlan. At the beginning of the 16th century, the Spanish conquerors founded a new city in its place, from which Mexico City grew.

The largest cities in South America by area

It is located in southeastern Brazil along the length of the Tiete River. It has a population of 11.3 million people and is the most populous city in the Western Hemisphere.

Sao Paulo is a city of contrasts; on the one hand, it is the most modern city in Brazil, built up with skyscrapers made of glass and concrete (the tallest building in the country, the Miranti do Vali skyscraper, is located here). On the other hand, the city dates back to the 16th century, and on its territory many “echoes of the past” have been preserved - ancient buildings, museums, churches, which harmoniously combine with modern buildings.

Second place belongs to the city of Bogota, the capital of Colombia. The largest city in the country, its area is 1,587 square meters. km. Bogota was founded by Spanish colonialists in 1538. The city was located on the site of an Indian fortress called Bacata and became the capital of New Grenada, which is the name Quesada gave to the conquered territory. In 1598, Bogota became the capital of the Captaincy General of Spain, and in 1739 of the Viceroyalty of New Grenada.

This is a city of futuristic architecture, combined with colonial-style churches and minor historical buildings, inhabited by an unfavorable contingent: homeless people, thieves and robbers. Bogotá and its suburbs are home to 7 million people, which is one sixth of Colombia's total population. But Bogota is only the second largest city in South America.

The top spot is taken by Brasilia. The area of the capital of the Republic of Brazil is 5802 square meters. km. True, it became the capital quite recently - on April 21, 1960, becoming the third capital of the country, after Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. The city was specially planned and built in the central part in order to utilize inactive areas, attract the population and develop outlying areas. The capital is located on the Brazilian plateau, far from the main political areas.

Construction of the city began in 1957 according to a unified plan, focused on progressive construction technologies and the fundamentals of modern urban planning. It was conceived as an ideal city. In 1986, the city of Brasilia was named "patrimony of humanity" by UNESCO.

Kinshasa is also the second most French-speaking city in the world, second only to Paris. But judging by the rate of population growth, after some time it may overtake the French capital. This is a city of contrasts. Here, rich areas with high-rise buildings, shopping centers and cafes juxtapose with slums of huts and shacks.

What is the largest square in Europe? What country is it in? Let's figure it out.

Battle for supremacy

The question of which one often causes a wave of controversy. This is often called the front square in Warsaw. However, it is difficult to call this correct, because most of its territory is occupied by two shopping centers and a high-rise building.

This place is also claimed by Freedom Square in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov. It occupies 11.9 hectares. Its shape is not rectangular, so it stretches from 690 to 750 meters in length, and from 96 to 125 in width.

Despite its considerable size, it is not a record holder. The largest square in Europe is actually located in Samara. The confusion with Freedom Square dates back to Soviet times. Perhaps it appeared thanks to the writer who called it “the widest and largest.”

At that time, Kharkov was one of the most powerful industrial centers, the pride of the local population, which could also influence the active maintenance of this legend. This belief is firmly rooted, which is why many people still consider the Kharkov landmark to be the largest.

The largest square in Europe

The largest is in Samara. Krasnoarmeyskaya, Galaktionovskaya, Vilonovskaya and Chapaevskaya streets flock to it. The area occupies as much as 17.4 hectares, of which only 8 are paved. There are many objects on the territory.

In size, it significantly exceeds not only Freedom Square in Kharkov. And also Red Square in Moscow, Palace Square in St. Petersburg. This is truly a record holder. From all four corners, the largest square in Europe is framed by small squares with flower beds, lawns and shrubs.

In its center is a monument to a party leader and revolutionary. Its author is the famous architect Matvey Manizer, who worked in the style of socialist realism and also created Stalin’s death mask.

The main object of the square is the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. The building covers more than two hectares of territory. It was erected in 1931. The theater belongs to the pylon style; it is considered a classic example of neoclassicism of the 30s.

Story

Previously, Kuibyshev Square had other names. During its history, it managed to visit the Cathedral and Communal. This place was identified for it back in 1853. Samara was a fairly prestigious city, so it had to have a decent-sized area. The planned parameters were 525 by 325 meters.

On the site of the musical theater was the Cathedral, which could accommodate 2,500 people. Its construction lasted from 1869 to 1894. At the same time, the squares were founded, named Nikolaevsky in honor of the tsar's heir.

After the revolution, the square changed somewhat. It began to be called Communal, and its size increased. It took the new government two years to destroy the cathedral. It was replaced by the House of Culture, which housed an Empire hall with 1,250 seats, a library and a museum.

In 1935, the largest square in Europe began to bear the name of Kuibyshev. In 2010, there was an attempt to return its historical name, but city authorities decided not to support this idea.

Significant Events

The placement of the House of Culture on the square made it an important center of city life. During the war, performances were staged here many times. In 1941, a military parade took place on the square at the same time as the parade on Red Square in Moscow.

In 1942, at the Kuibyshev Theater, Shostakovich first performed the legendary 7th or “Leningrad” symphony. He began writing the second part of the symphony during the siege of Leningrad, and it was in Samara that he completed his work.

One of the high-profile events is also the rally during the perestroika period. It occurred on June 22, 1988 and, according to many historians, marked the beginning of the end of the USSR.

Tiananmen Square is the largest square in the world. Its dimensions are one kilometer by half a kilometer. The name translates as Gate of Heavenly Peace, since this is where the main entrance to the Forbidden City is located.

The Temple of Heaven is the only round-shaped temple. The Chinese hate everything round. With all the variety of hieroglyphs, there is not a single one containing a circular element! Even the 5 traffic rings in Beijing are square. In front of the temple there is a large park where townspeople like to gather and exercise collectively and just spend time together.

Despite the bad weather and drizzling rain, there were a lot of people in the square. However, the guide explained that there are few people now. Most people gather in the square at 5 am, when the Chinese national flag is raised:

On the north side the square is adjacent to the Forbidden City:

In the middle of the square stands a monument to the Heroes of World War II who fought the Japanese, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong:

“Men in gray” are hiding throughout the square:

There is a long line to enter the mausoleum, curving around the perimeter of almost the entire site:

Here, tourist groups, just like in the Forbidden City, wear colorful caps and all take pictures in front of the entrance to the Imperial Palace:

Compare with the same photograph from, taken near the mausoleum of Kim Il Sung:

Here are a couple more examples:

The entire area is fenced and you can enter it only in one place - next to the luxurious public toilet:

The Temple of Heaven is a symbol of China:

This is the only building in China whose roof has 3 tiers. The upper tier is built for the sky. I talked about this in detail in an article about the Imperial Palace:

In front of the temple there is a large park where the Chinese like to spend time. In the 70s of the last century, everyone lived in communal apartments, but now they have gone to separate apartments. In parks they meet old neighbors and friends. Together they engage in various active and not so active activities. Right at the entrance to the park, everyone can practice handling gymnastic ribbons:

The most spectacular were the Jiyan Qi games. This is the most popular game in China. Everyone plays it, from schoolchildren to active retirees. People stand in a circle and throw a ball at each other that resembles a badminton shuttlecock:

There are several difficult blows, for example, over the head:

All this happens to the music:

In addition to active recreation, there are many other entertainments in the park - singing, dancing and cards:

Residents of every corner of the planet consider their city special and are proud of its attractions. In some cities these are architectural monuments, in others they are large and unusual fountains, and thirdly, the pride is the city square and its impressive size. From this article we will find out where the largest square in Europe is located.

Warsaw

The largest area in Europe is located in Warsaw; its size is amazing - 24 hectares. Since its construction, the residents of Warsaw have changed the name of the square several times; today it bears the name of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, a great political figure of the country.

Looking at the monument, it seems that he is observing order in the city and no violation will hide from his gaze.

Most of the territory is tiled or paved, but there are also green spaces - islands with flower beds. There is a parking lot and a public transport stop nearby.

Parades, rallies, and youth entertainment are held on the square.

On the territory there is a monument to Jozef Pilsudski, the tomb of the unknown soldier and the ruins of the palace of the Saxon kings and many other attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. Here you can have a pleasant time, enjoy the beauty, and drink a cup of coffee in a nearby restaurant.

Recently, its primacy has been disputed, since several shopping centers and a market were built on the territory, but also many other areas include park areas and retail outlets in their territory. Therefore, the square named after Jozef Piłsudski is the largest in Europe today.

Samara

The second largest Kuibyshev Square is located in the glorious city of Samara. It is located in the city center and has a rectangular shape, which is rare. This became possible due to the destruction of the Cathedral in 1930. At the same time, it was renamed from Cathedral to Communal, and after another 5 years it received the name Kuibyshev Square. In 1938, a monument to the great revolutionary V.V. Kuibyshev was erected here.

The total occupied area of the main attraction of Samara is 17.4 hectares, of which 8 hectares are paved, 7 hectares are park areas for recreation and 2.4 hectares are occupied by the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.

Kuibyshev Square is a favorite vacation spot for guests and residents of the city of Samara. Various celebrations are held here: young people celebrate the New Year en masse, military parades in honor of May 9 are not much inferior to those in Moscow. Its territory is perfect for holding mass flash mobs and rallies. So, on April 12, 2016, 2016 people came to the center and lined up in the words - “SAMARA 55 COSMOS”. A satellite flying in orbit captured this event.

Saint Petersburg

Moskovskaya Square is a favorite place for tourists and residents of St. Petersburg. Couples in love make dates here, married couples go for walks with their children. On its territory of 13 hectares there is a complex of 11 fountains. On weekdays they operate from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on weekends and holidays they are accompanied by a light and sound show.

The largest monument to V.I. Lenin in St. Petersburg is installed on Moskovskaya Square. The height of the monument is 8 meters, and the total height with the pedestal is 16. The center is the House of Soviets - to this day the largest administrative building in the city.

You can get to Moskovskaya Square from anywhere in the city both by private car and by public transport. There is paid parking nearby. Car owners can leave their vehicle and enjoy a walk.

For the convenience of residents and guests of the city, the Moskovskaya metro station was opened in 1969.

Moskovskaya Square received its name in 1968, and before that it had not been called anything for 30 years.

Bordeaux

The next largest area is in the town of Bordeaux in France. Its unusual shape in the form of an elongated rectangle with one rounded side was approved in 1816, and in 1818 it was called La place des Quinconces. The square received this name because the trees on its territory were planted in a checkerboard pattern - in French, quincunxes.

On the territory of La place des Quinconces there are monuments, sculptures and picturesque fountains. On both sides there are green spaces - park areas, with a total area of 6 hectares, which is half of the entire territory - 12 hectares. The sights of La place des Quinconces amaze with their beauty and scope. For example, two rostral columns 21 meters high, white marble statues or a picturesque fountain sculpture.

Looking at the sculpture, one gets the impression that an army on horseback is emerging from the water.

Many believe that Freedom Square in Kharkov is the largest in Europe. But it is in fifth place in our ranking, although its size is also amazing - 11.9 hectares. Its shape is unusual: on one side it is rectangular, on the other – round. In the rounded part there is a park where you can relax in the summer heat.

The rectangular part was originally conceived as a venue for public events. In winter, an ice town with ice sculptures is built here, and the New Year brings together many people, both young and old. For several years in a row, during the warm season, tons of sand were brought to the square, and fairytale castles and sculptures were built from it.

Near Freedom Square there are 2 metro stations – “University” and “GasProm”. In addition, the place can be reached by buses and private cars.

During the Queen and Paul Rodgers performance in 2008, more than a quarter of a million fans gathered in the square

Every city has its own attraction that can glorify it throughout the world. The ones listed above are huge squares with amazing monuments, squares and fountains. Every visitor to these cities should see everything with their own eyes.
