Gardeners who plant peppers for more than one season and encounter difficulties in growing this crop pay more attention to the characteristics of the varieties when purchasing seeds, choosing the most unpretentious of them. This is due not only to a lack of experience in growing, but also to a number of other reasons that you need to know about before purchasing seeds.

The most productive and unpretentious varieties of pepper

When choosing peppers, gardeners, first of all, evaluate the unpretentiousness of the plants - their ability to withstand negative impacts environment, which may include:

  1. Climate conditions: climates that are too hot, cold growing regions, or regions that have sudden changes in day or night temperatures.
  2. Possibility of growing in greenhouses or open ground.
  3. Resistance to diseases.

An important factor, especially for those who have little experience in cultivating this crop, is the selection of unpretentious varieties that do not require special growing conditions or additional care: garter, trimming and other operations.

And finally, the main indicator of the variety, which interests everyone without exception, is the amount of yield obtained from one plant.

Classification to consider when choosing

You need to know that peppers, in addition to the main division into bitter (spicy) types and Bell pepper, often called "Bulgarian", are divided into categories:

  • according to the timing of crop ripening: early ripening, forming a crop at the age of 100–120 days, and late ripening with a ripening period of 130–150 days;
  • according to the height of the bush: low-growing - determinate, semi-determinant or plants of medium height, and indoterminant - tall plants that do not limit themselves in growth (require the skills of forming a bush and garter);
  • variety or hybrid, the latter are characterized by specially formed qualities, for example, resistance to certain diseases or characteristics of response to different climatic conditions;
  • according to wall thickness, which has implications for subsequent culinary processing: thin-walled 2-3 mm, with an average wall 4-7 mm and thick-walled 8-10 mm.

Now that the basic terminology used by manufacturers on seed packages is clear, let’s consider the main most unpretentious and productive varieties of sweet peppers.

Early ripening varieties

Peppers of this group quickly form a harvest. The choice of such varieties is especially relevant in regions where the summer is short, and when low temperatures set in, plants will not be able to form full-fledged fruits. Why peppers are considered a “capricious” crop

When a gardener buys seeds, he expects to get from his plants the varietal characteristics that he read on the packaging. But in some cases this does not happen.

Causes of difficulties encountered during cultivation unpretentious peppers, can be divided into three categories:

  1. Real features of this crop that require compliance with agrotechnical rules when growing.
  2. Mistakes that gardeners make when growing peppers, believing that the problem is not in skills, but in seeds, producers and other reasons.
  3. The seeds are really of low quality, so it is better to choose those agricultural companies that you already trust.

Let's consider the characteristics of pepper that need to be taken into account when deciding to grow this crop on your plot in order to get fruits like in the picture from a bag of seeds.

Lighting requirements

Pepper is very demanding of light. Moreover, this applies not only to adult plants, but also to seedlings.

If the seedlings do not receive the required light, they will be stunted in growth and will not be able to produce the maximum yield intended by the breeders.

For seedlings under 30 days of age, an increase in daylight hours is required, so it is important to provide additional light.

If the plant is more than two months old, it will no longer actively respond to the number of hours of light, but will still require light intensity.

A plant planted permanently in shaded areas or partial shade will drop buds and set a low number of ovaries.

Conclusion: whenever possible, we provide additional light to the seedlings; when choosing a place for growing during the season, we look for unshaded areas.

Important! When planting peppers in greenhouses or open ground, especially on a clear and sunny day, the seedlings must be shaded.

If the plants are not taken outside for hardening, they may “burn”; under active sunlight, the leaves will turn white, and the seedlings may either die completely or be delayed in development for a long time. Early harvest definitely won't.

Temperature

Peppers love warmth, so when planted in open ground or a greenhouse, they are subject to stress from fairly sudden changes in temperature. Create ideal conditions it won’t work, so the only way out is to transfer the seedlings to balconies or the street during the daytime, when a period of heat sets in. If the plants get used to more low temperatures, then they adapt faster and will not stop growing for a long time when changing location.

If you decide to plant seedlings in open ground, then it is necessary to provide shelter for them at first, especially at night.

Watering

It is important to remember that when watering it is necessary to determine not only the volume of water for one plant, the frequency of watering, but also the temperature of the water. The water should be warm, not cold, and this is very important!

Water the plants approximately once every two days, but you must first check the soil moisture: it is important not to let it dry out, but also not to overwater the plants. When growing seedlings, you also need to be careful about watering. With excess moisture, seedlings are very quickly affected by the “black leg” disease and may die.

In order to have fewer questions when watering, and especially if you cannot monitor its regularity, it is better to mulch the soil. Then it will not dry out quickly, and the number of required waterings will decrease.

Important! Pepper will tolerate drying out more easily than overwatering.

If you follow the basic conditions for caring for peppers, they will thank the grower a bountiful harvest not only for fresh consumption, but will also allow you to cook delicious preparations for the winter.

Growing sweet peppers

In the southern regions it grows well in open ground, but in more northern latitudes the largest yield from pepper is obtained in greenhouse conditions. Sweet peppers have a herbaceous stem that becomes woody at the base over time. In places where the plant branches, single flowers appear.

Sweet peppers are a self-pollinating crop, but sometimes they are cross-pollinated by insects. Landings bell pepper should be located away from beds with hot peppers, since cross-pollination may occur, which leads to the appearance of a bitter taste in the fruits.

Sweet peppers differ from other crops in having a rather long growing season. The best varieties of sweet pepper (according to reviews from summer residents) are early-ripening varieties that have technical ripeness at closed ground occurs approximately 100 days after germination. That is why this crop, both in mid-latitudes and in the south, is grown through seedlings. In this case, the seeds of early thick-walled sweet pepper are sown in boxes with fertile soil substrate in early February.

Sweet pepper is a rather demanding and heat-loving crop. Its seeds germinate fastest at a temperature of 25–27 °C. These plants develop best at 20–23 °C. It is noteworthy that when the ambient temperature drops to 13 °C, seedlings of sweet peppers and even adult plants stop growing.

When the first leaves appear, the seedlings are planted according to a 6x6 or 7x7 cm pattern into boxes or 1 plant per or plastic cups. Before planting in open ground, pepper seedlings are hardened off for 7-10 days. It is best to plant plants with 7-9 formed leaves in a permanent place. Plant seedlings in open ground only when the threat has passed spring frosts, since it dies already at 0 °C. Plants are planted in rows, the distance between which is 40-45 cm. The interval between peppers should be 30-40 cm. It can be reduced when planting compact, low-growing varieties.

The beds for sweet peppers are fertilized in the fall. To do this, add 4-5 kg of rotted humus or per 1 sq.m. to the soil. plot or . Add 20-30 g per 1 sq.m. to the soil. Such soil fertilization can be carried out several days before planting seedlings in the spring.

To obtain the highest possible yield, timely care of plants and creation of the most favorable conditions. Sweet peppers are planted in well-lit areas, protected from the wind. With a lack of light, plants stretch and shed flowers and ovaries. The soil for this type of pepper should be fertile, light and neutral in acidity. It must be constantly moisturized. Lack of moisture greatly inhibits the growth of plants, so without regular watering they become dwarf, and the fruits become small and ugly.

Sweet peppers are sensitive to excess nitrogen. At the same time, plants quickly develop green mass, but at the same time the number of flowers and ovaries decreases.

At the beginning of August, the tops of the stems are pinched and all buds and flowers that will not have time to ripen before autumn are removed. After 10–15 days, the operation is repeated. During the growing season, tall peppers are tied to stakes or trellises 2-3 times.

To feed sweet peppers, use diluted bird droppings or a mixture of mullein and. You can also fertilize with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

During the growing season, it is necessary to regularly remove weeds and loosen the soil. Sweet pepper fruits can be collected unripe (at the stage of technical ripeness). In the phase of biological ripeness, they contain more sugar, but if you wait until the fruits on the bush are fully ripened, the overall yield will be much lower.
