Complete instructions on how to make and install a sliding door in an interior opening with your own hands. How to install sliding doors with your own hands How to attach sliding interior doors

Initially, doors only served the function of retaining heat in the house, so people cared more about this component than about their appearance. Modern technologies allow you to harmoniously fit interior doors into the interior of any style and direction, without forgetting about their functionality.

Sliding structures have gained the most popularity on the door market. Installing sliding doors allows you to add uniqueness and originality to the design of the room. They make it possible to significantly expand the space of the room without requiring extra space to open the sashes, and also decorate the area around them in accordance with the general style.

The first generation of sliding doors were very thin partitions that got stuck in the runners and caused only irritation. It is for this reason that many still do not dare to change the more familiar swing structures. Consumers are also very much put off by the myth about the complexity of such a procedure as installing a sliding door with their own hands. Still most of The population of our country tries to avoid calling a specialist to their home or additional expenses caused by paying for his work.

Modern sliding systems

The design of sliding doors improves with each new model, and modern systems already have a number of undeniable advantages:

  • saving space required to open a swing door;
  • such a door cannot be opened by a draft;
  • ability to choose size and material;
  • the absence of hinges that begin to creak over time;
  • absolute safety - it is impossible to pinch a finger with such a door;
  • the possibility of implementing any design idea;
  • harmonious combination with the environment;
  • possibility of combining adjacent rooms.

One of the disadvantages sliding systems- poor sound insulation

Of course, there are a number of disadvantages of coupe systems:

  1. The design of sliding doors is such that gaps between the frame and the leaf cannot be avoided. Therefore, such designs have much lower sound and thermal insulation properties. They practically do not isolate the room from noise coming from the next room.
  2. Such doors have a slightly higher price.
  3. As a result of improper installation or due to poor quality of the mechanism, the sashes may move unevenly along the runners, which can lead to their jamming.
  4. It is necessary to ensure that there is free space on the side of the door into which the door leaf slides. It is possible to place a cabinet or some other large object near this wall only if the door fits into a special pocket. Otherwise, the cabinet can only be placed at a certain distance of at least 100-150 mm. This, in turn, leads to a reduction in usable area, for which the installation of sliding doors is most often started. Disadvantage of a wall with a pocket underneath door leaf– it cannot be used for attaching wall lighting, paintings, decorative elements, as well as for installing switches and sockets.
  5. It will accumulate in your pocket a large number of dust, which is extremely difficult to remove.
  6. Quite often, in the niche in which the door is hidden, the sliding door leaf jams due to misalignment of the rollers.

Advice: it is better to provide for the possibility of removing one side of the niche under the sliding door leaf. This will help avoid the problems described in points 5 and 6.

Therefore, before you decide to replace conventional swing structures with sliding ones, you should carefully think through everything, weigh the pros and cons, and only then decide whether this is really necessary.

Classification by installation and type of mechanism

Installation of sliding interior doors is not as complicated as it is usually imagined. Maximum reliability and high quality design depends entirely on the accuracy of the installation work and utmost precision in carrying out all required sizes and calculations. First you need to decide what kind of sliding door you would like to see in your home.

All sliding systems can be divided into two groups:

  • built into the wall;
  • visible structures moving along the wall.

Sliding systems in which the doors go into the wall

Based on the type of mechanism, such doors can be divided into three types:

  • the canvas is supported on the upper suspension - non-threshold systems;
  • the canvas is held on the lower suspension. The disadvantage is the presence of a small threshold on the floor that can be recessed, but such structures are considered the easiest to install and are also the cheapest;
  • the system uses both of the above mounting options. This type of door is the most reliable and convenient to use.

Advice: it should be noted that the price of a door mainly depends not only on its type, but more on the quality of materials and type of fittings. That is, having replaced expensive platbands, door handles, locks and rollers for cheaper analogues, you can save significantly.

Sliding doors in which the leaf is held only by the upper suspension are called non-threshold

Of course, fitting the door into a special pocket allows you to save some space in the room, but it also requires additional work and destruction of part of the wall near the doorway.

Tip: you can install the canvas not only by breaking the wall, but also by installing an overlay structure made of plasterboard. As a result, the length of the room will decrease by approximately 100 mm, and you will be able to avoid a rather complicated procedure.

Sliding door design

Sliding systems consist of several components:

  • frame with glass or solid filling;
  • a mechanism consisting of a guide, clamps, roller carriages, etc.;
  • platbands and extensions;
  • decorative strips designed to disguise the driving mechanism;
  • accessories (special locks and handles).

There are several options door frames:

  1. MDF frames with a variety of tinting.
  2. Frames made of aluminum profile. They are distinguished by their lightness and durability of construction, are absolutely not afraid of humidity, and allow the absence of decorative elements, as they can be painted in any color or anodized.
  3. Doors from tempered glass(frameless designs). Suitable mainly for high-tech style, ideal for highlighting meeting areas and for wet rooms.

Glass sliding doors

Of course, doors with a wooden frame are somewhat more expensive, but they have higher thermal insulation.

The mechanism used to move the sliding door consists of one or more guides with roller carriages that secure the door leaf. Typically used as a guide aluminum profile.

The rollers are made from a special polymer material that is extremely resistant to damage and abrasion. Rotation is carried out by rolling bearings, which ensures ease of movement of the carriage.

Interesting: fittings for sliding systems have a number of distinctive features. The handles must be recessed, otherwise they will interfere with the operation of the door. An ordinary straight lock will not be able to close such a structure; its bolt must be hook-shaped.

Big choice door leaves allows for many interior design options. You should not use fabric made of solid wood, since the heaviness of this material leads to distortions of the entire structure, leading to a decrease in smoothness.

Important: the sliding door should be made as light as possible by using lighter materials, such as aluminum. If the weight of the sash exceeds 70-75 kg, then it is better to install four or more rollers on each one.

What you need to install sliding interior doors

Before you begin assembling interior sliding systems, you need to prepare all the materials and tools that may be needed during the installation process.

When installing interior sliding doors, you cannot do without a screwdriver or drill.

So, we will need:

  • screwdriver or electric drill;
  • perforator (if you need to remove the inside of the wall);
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • two platbands. One is installed on top of the door, and the second is on the opposite side from the one into which the door opens;
  • anchors;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • door handles – 2 pcs;
  • finishing nails;
  • extras – 2 pcs;
  • stand for connecting the door when closed;
  • necessary accessories, such as rollers, fastening materials, metal (preferably aluminum) guide bar;
  • door leaf;
  • dry wooden beam 50x50, the width of which is twice the same size of the door.

Tip: in order for the door leaf to fit perfectly, carefully measure the doorway and increase the linear dimensions (width and height) by seventy millimeters.

Installation of a sliding structure

To carry out any complex options(installation of multi-leaf doors, glass doors that have a very large weight, or installation of a pocket in the wall) it is better to invite real specialists, since any errors during the installation process can hit your pocket very hard. A person who never deals with sliding structures will be able to install only simple sliding doors.

With installation sliding doors you can easily do it yourself

If you purchased ready set, then installation will not take you much effort or time, since it will already have all the necessary fittings provided by the manufacturer. But if you decide to create a sliding system in accordance with your wishes and preferences, then you will have to select the equipment yourself and it is very difficult to avoid mistakes when doing this work for the first time.

Let's try to create instructions for installing sliding doors that will allow a beginner to quickly and efficiently carry out everything necessary work. Get yourself together, you will need extreme care and accuracy.

Installation should begin from the opening. We measure the height of the opening in three places: on the left, in the middle and on the right, and the width in three places: at the top, on the center line of the wall and at the bottom. Next, we check the verticality, perpendicularity and straightness of the corresponding sides. If the design provides for framing, then you should measure the minimum and maximum thickness of the wall, making sure to take measurements in the corners of the opening, and not just on the sides.

For ease of understanding, we will divide the entire further process into simple steps.

Removing the old door

First you need to remove the old door, door hinges, carefully remove the platbands on both sides, then dismantle the door frame. If it is well secured and does not interfere with the free movement of the sashes, then you can leave it, it will be a continuation of the wall.

Tidying up the walls

Now you need to carefully level the walls, filling all the cracks and cracks. The opening must have clear dimensions (height, width and thickness), there should be no parts of brick or foam concrete protruding anywhere, and the drywall should be trimmed.

Checking top part opening and floor for parallelism to each other (tolerance no more than 5 mm) and for horizontalness. Using a plumb line, we check the sides of the opening; here a deviation of no more than 5 mm per 2000 mm is allowed. The more even the walls you can achieve, the more tightly the door leaf will fit against them.

Installing a box is a responsible job

If the old box is dismantled, then we install a new one. It is very difficult to cope here alone, so it is better to invite a partner. We install the frame in the doorway and level it using small wedges. We adjust the angle of the structure relative to the floor and walls by moving or recessing the wedges.

Install the door frame, leveling it using wedges

We fix the box to the wall with screws. We use a screwdriver very carefully, since any, even minor, damage can lead to dire consequences.

Attach the upper guides

After door frame ready, place the door leaf against the opening and mark it on the wall with a pencil top level. Now we carry out the same procedure, but by installing the canvas directly into the doorway. This must be done in case the floor plane is suddenly not level enough.

If the resulting line is horizontal, measure 70 mm upward from it and draw another line. This is where the guide rail will be installed. We attach a pre-prepared wooden beam to the marked line and fix it with screws as tightly as possible, regardless of the evenness of the wall. To do this, we use as many screws as needed.

Attach the rail to the bottom of the beam

Now we attach the rail to the lower end of the wooden beam. First, loosely screw the guide on one side. To accurately determine the location of the screw, it is necessary to divide the thickness of the door in half and add 3-5 mm, necessary to ensure free movement of the sash (distance from the wall). We carry out the same operation on the other side of the block. Before final fastening the rail, be sure to ensure there is sufficient distance between the door leaf and the wall.

Important: the guide rail must be strictly straight, not the slightest bend is allowed, regardless of the curvature of the wall and beam.

Now you can finally secure the guide.

Assembling carriages and installing limiters

Before final assembly carriages, you need to make sure they move freely

Tip: no need to lubricate anything inner part guide.

We install travel limiters along the edges of the guide rail, making sure that the rubber shock absorbers point inward.

Groove at the bottom of the door leaf

We begin to design the groove at the bottom end of the door. To do this, we retreat 15 mm from the edge of the sash and drill two holes on each side with a diameter of 7 mm and a depth of 20 mm, between which we cut out a groove intended for the lower guide exactly in the middle.

It is difficult to make a perfectly even groove even with a router. Beginners can be advised to install slats or a U-shaped profile.

The depth of the groove should be at least 18 mm, and the width should be 2-3 mm greater than the width of the bottom guide, usually a flag or knife. Since it is very problematic to make a perfectly even recess yourself even with the help of an electric drill or router, it is preferable to install a U-shaped profile or two slats.

Fastening to carriages is an important detail

Fastenings to the carriages should be attached exactly in the middle at a distance of at least two millimeters from the side edges of the sash. In this case, the semicircular cutouts on the brackets should be turned towards the wall.

Installation of door leaf

Two people are required to install the door leaf. After attaching the blade to the rail, we align the bolt of the right carriage with the cutout on the bracket located on the same side. To do this, you need to lift the door a little. We insert the end of the bolt into the mounting hole of the adjusting nut with a washer, which should remain outside the bracket. We fasten the brackets to the bolts of the carriages, but not completely.

Now we install the lower guide into the cutout of the lower end. This is easy to do by slightly moving the bottom part away from the wall. We return the canvas to a horizontal position and move it to the open state. Use a pencil to mark the longest opening length. To adjust the gap between the wall and the doors, you need to tilt the lower part of the door leaf until it reaches it and mark the position of the knife on the floor.

Important: the gap between the wall and the door leaf should not exceed 5 mm.

After removing the carriage nuts, remove the canvas and attach the lower guide to the floor using two self-tapping screws.

We align the groove with the guide and hang the door leaf again, also not fully tightening the nuts. After setting the required gap between the floor and the door leaf, by tightening or loosening the adjustment bolts on the carriages, fasten the nuts while simultaneously holding the adjustment bolts from turning.

Decorative design of the sliding system

We install a decorative folding trim above the top rail and disguise it in accordance with the general style of the room (you can paste it with the same wallpaper, or paint it with the same paint as the walls of the room). Attach handles and lock.

How to install a sliding door - video instructions

In order to better understand how to install a sliding door, the video will demonstrate in detail some of the nuances of installing a system with a false wall.

After watching the recording, you can assemble your first sliding structure in literally 3-5 hours.

Of course, you can install a sliding interior door yourself, but in this case you cannot vouch for the quality. After all, only a specialist will be able to take into account all the nuances of each specific case and equip your home with a sliding system that will long years will delight you with its excellent and, most importantly, uninterrupted work.

It's hard to imagine our life without doors. Their purpose is to freely let us through walls, limiting, if desired, this opportunity for strangers: people, animals, smells or bad weather. Present in every home, these guardians of comfort and safety, as if in payment for their work, often limit the usable area of the room due to the opening radius, and the wider the opening blocked by the door, the greater these losses. IN Lately, in construction the principle of “free planning” is actively used, when the room inside is an empty box, without load-bearing walls and other partitions. This method is beneficial both to the developer (by reducing the delivery time of the project) and to the end user, allowing him to furnish an apartment or office to his own taste and color. In this case, the question of rational and aesthetic zoning of the room inevitably arises.

An apartment is for people, not for doors

An excellent solution in this case would be to install partitions, sliding doors, roller shutters or accordion doors, allowing, in addition to the lightness and functionality of the design, to significantly increase the usable area. In turn, for standard small apartments, in conditions of limited free space, this method of dividing rooms can become almost a panacea. In addition, installing glass sliding doors with a mirror base will visually expand the space and, thanks to the reflective effect, make the room brighter.

How it works?

In a slider system (also called: on rollers it slides along one or two guides fixed along the wall, hiding behind one of its sides when opened. Moreover, both for installing a single-leaf sliding door and in the case of two door leaves, the installation technology remains the same and depends only on the length of the guides and the availability of space for placing the door leaves. A widespread option is when the door goes inside the wall, in the so-called door pocket or pencil case. This method, despite the additional difficulties of installation, allows you to ensure the integrity of the design of the room and protects the surface of the door from accidental damage.

Advantages over competitors

In addition to saving space, a big advantage of slider mechanisms, compared to the same accordion door, is the possibility of using a leaf similar to conventional swing doors, with their huge range (as in appearance, and according to the material of manufacture). In this aspect, only a rotary door can compete with a slider system, but it is much more expensive and more difficult to install, and also takes up more space when opening.

If the walls, floor and doorway have ideal geometry, then the process of installing sliding interior doors with your own hands, in a certain sense, is even simpler than traditional installation, which is explained by large tolerances when mating surfaces. As mentioned above, two methods of arranging doors are used: along and inside the wall. Let's look at each of these options, understanding the installation process step by step.

Instructions for installing a sliding door along a wall

The first step is to clear the opening from old door(if installed), including trim and box. Regardless of the installation method on preparatory stage installation, it is necessary to perfectly align the walls around the doorway.

Preparing the doorway

The opening for the door must have a clear geometry: the side slopes correspond to the vertical, and its upper part must be parallel to the floor and the horizon (to check, use a tape measure, building level and plumb line). The permissible difference both horizontally and vertically is no more than 5 mm along the entire length of the opening. Then, using self-tapping screws or liquid nails, additional strips are attached, on which they are mounted door frames. The resulting size of the opening must be completely, without gaps, covered by the door leaf being hung, taking into account the roller mechanism. The height is selected so that, after installation, the distance between the bottom of the door and the floor is 5-6 mm, which is important for improving sound insulation.

Using long rule, you need to make sure that the wall (in the direction the door opens) is in the same plane with the opening to be closed.

Placement of guides and assembly of the slider system

Now we proceed to install the sliding door mechanism, which is a kit consisting of a metal profile, a pair of roller carriages, a lower guide, movement limiters and fasteners. Choice quality system sliding is very important for the smooth and durable operation of the entire door unit.

When moving a door along a wall, as a rule, one (upper) guide rail is used, the length of which should be no less than twice the width of the door leaf (or better, exceed it by 100-150 mm). Manufacturers offer profiles of 2, 3, 4 and 6 meters in length, which are often equipped with notches that determine the required size of the guide to suit one or another standard width doors.

  • At a distance of 60 mm, parallel to the upper slope of the opening, brackets for fastening the profile are installed on the wall, the role of which can be played by a spacer, which is a pine beam with a cross section of 50x70 mm, equal in length to the guide profile. The supporting elements must be fastened securely, as they will support the entire structure. To avoid skewing and jamming of the door, it is extremely important to perfectly maintain the horizontal level of the brackets (distance gasket) and their strict parallelism to the floor.
  • The guide profile is attached with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the beam at a distance of 5-10 mm from the plane of the wall (platband).
  • At the upper end of the door leaf, rollers for sliding doors are installed using self-tapping screws. They are placed on both sides at a distance of 100-110 mm from the edges to the axis of fastening of the moving part.
  • The lower guide gives the door additional stability and, depending on the configuration, can take the form of a C-shaped bracket or a T-bar. In the second case, using a router or drill and chisel, it is necessary to select a groove along the entire length of the lower end of the door that is a couple of millimeters greater than the thickness of the guide flag.

Hanging and finishing the door

  • After this, a movement limiter and a rubber shock absorber are installed in the aluminum guide, which can move freely along the rail and is rigidly fixed after hanging the door leaf.
  • Then, if there is free space along the wall, the roller carriages are inserted into the profile, holding the door attached to them in a hanging position. The installation is completed by installing the response shock absorber and plug. Before hanging, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the guide from debris and other foreign objects that impede the free movement of the carriages.

  • If space is limited, the profile is attached to the spacer (brackets) immediately together with the door leaf and movement limiters. In this case, for high-quality fixation of the structure, it is better to work with an assistant, achieving ideal observance of the horizon and a uniform distance from the wall along the entire length of the profile (for which it is convenient to use a template from wooden blocks prepared in advance).
  • After that, they check the ease of sliding of the door along the wall, and in case of uneven movement or slight misalignment, using adjusting screws located on the roller carriages, the position of the door leaf is finely adjusted to an ideal state. To avoid loosening of fastener elements (after adjusting the door), it is recommended to process the adjusting screws adhesive composition or sealant.
  • On next stage it is necessary to install the lower guide bracket, placing it in the middle of the working stroke of the door so that in any position of the door leaf the guide is always in engagement with it. In any case, the mounting location should be outside the doorway (next to the slope towards which the door opens).
  • Now you can install handles, a lock (if necessary) and a decorative strip covering the slider mechanism, which must be removable to allow maintenance and adjustment of the roller carriages.

Hiding the doors in the wall

For the second installation method (using a “door pocket”), let’s take a look at the installation instructions, which differ from the first option only in the additional, albeit very serious, volume construction work. The very same fastening of the slider mechanism is similar to the process given above.

First you need to decide on the principle of forming a “door pocket”, and here, depending on a number of factors, there are two options:

  1. The structure is created in place of a large doorway, at least twice the width of the door being installed (allowing a door leaf and a pencil case to be placed in it). In this case, a hollow frame is formed on both sides of the door, imitating a blank wall from the outside.
  2. An existing wall of sufficient width is used as one of the sides of the “door pocket” design. But this does not at all mean saving materials and simplifying installation, since, in order to create the visual integrity of the wall, the frame will have to be mounted over its entire area, both above the door frame and in the direction where there will be no pencil case.

The first method of creating a “secret shelter” for installing sliding interior doors with your own hands is preferable, since it allows you to make the frame less massive, indistinguishable in thickness from regular wall, and is most often used in new buildings, especially in “open plan” conditions.

Breaking is not building, or the nuances of expanding a doorway

If you are an adherent of the principle of beauty, which requires sacrifice, then you will have to work hard to expand the doorway to the required width. The main thing is to pay attention to some important aspects:

  • This is a permanent wall or just a partition. In the first case, it will be necessary to take additional measures to strengthen bearing capacity expandable opening (but it is safer to use the option of a pencil case attached to the wall).
  • To avoid additional problems, make sure that there are no electrical, plumbing or other communications inside the section of wall being removed (check the house plan, use a wiring detector if necessary).
  • Decide whether you will need an electrical, network or antenna socket on the wall with a door pocket; if so, then the wiring needs to be prepared in advance.

Arranging a door frame with your own hands

The material for creating the frame can be galvanized building profiles or wooden beams of the appropriate size, which are attached along the perimeter of the future “door pocket” in two parallel rows. When using an existing wall, you will need one row, but it will have to be installed over its entire area minus the doorway. The technology for constructing a false wall frame itself is similar to creating a partition from plasterboard and involves the installation vertical racks with a pitch of 400-600 mm, fastened together by jumpers in order to increase the rigidity of the structure. For not so much heavy doors(up to eighty kilograms), if it is necessary to form the upper part of the opening, a beam with a side width of about 50 mm is used, and with a higher load the frame is made welded (which is hardly justified in a private house or apartment).

The space between the rows should guarantee the unhindered movement of the door leaf and, as a rule, is 20 mm wider than the thickness of the door. The depth of the niche should correspond to the width of the sash hidden in it with a small margin (5-10 cm).

Don't forget to provide space and make a frame to hide the sliding mechanism. This will require either increasing the height of the opening or using a shorter door leaf.

Next, you should mount the slider mechanism and install the sliding door similarly to the recommendations above. The only difference is that the guide profile does not need to be attached to the spacer or bracket, but directly in the middle and along the top of the slope of the door opening or support beam.

Checking, adjusting and fine-tuning the operation of sliding doors is carried out before covering the wall with plasterboard, since then, without dismantling the covering, this will be impossible.

Then handles and locks are installed, facing material is attached to the frame and the walls are finished.

Installation of a finished pencil case for a door

Specialized stores offer comprehensive solutions for sliding systems, including both a sliding mechanism and a built-in block. Its installation is almost identical to the installation of a conventional door frame, and comes down to rigidly fastening the finished pencil case to the wall or installing it in the doorway, observing the strict positioning of all components of the kit. As a rule, fastening is carried out using polyurethane foam, having a small expansion. Then they install the guides, door leaf, handles, lock, drywall and the list goes on.

Don’t make yourself an idol: what to expect from sliding systems

When installing sliding doors, it is possible to use two sliding systems, which, located parallel, support the door leaf from above and below. This installation method allows you to withstand significant loads and is used, as a rule, when the door weighs significantly (more than 80 kg). However, for high-quality sliding in such a system, ideal symmetry of both guides is required, and the bottom rail, in order to avoid stumbling when walking, will have to be recessed into the floor, positioned at the same level with floor covering. In addition, the inevitable debris and small objects that get into the lower profile can easily damage the rollers and damage the entire opening mechanism.

Sliding door systems require an ideal wall surface and high precision during installation; they are less reliable than classic swing doors, are noisier when opening, and protect the room less well from extraneous odors and sounds.

However, careful installation, application quality mechanisms sliding, installation of additional seals at joints - are able to largely eliminate these shortcomings, and thanks to the high ergonomics and stylish design, sliding door systems have earned recognition and are widely used throughout the world.

Sliding door systems occupy a special place in the design of premises. Their functions combine several advantages - convenience, efficiency and originality. The installation of such doors differs significantly from the installation of conventional swing models. You can get acquainted with the principles and features of installing sliding systems by reading the section - installing sliding interior doors with your own hands: assembly video for non-professionals.

Types of sliding doors and their equipment

Designers do not skimp on ideas, developing new models of sliding interior systems. They may vary in the following ways:

Double sliding doors made of translucent glass between the kitchen and living room

Sliding doors, the top guide of which is attached to the ceiling, visually increase the height of the room. Designs that do not involve a bottom rail will maintain the unity of the floor covering of the entire room.

In the open position, the cassette sliding door leaf is located in a niche inside the wall

When purchasing sliding interior systems for DIY installation, make sure that standard equipment is available. It includes:

Double sliding doors with double row of top rails

The model of roller mechanisms and their number depend on the weight of the door leaf. If you purchase a door without a set of fittings, ask what its weight is.

DIY tools for installing sliding doors

To install sliding interior doors with your own hands, there is no need to have special tool. For DIY installation you will need the usual “standby” kit:

White wooden sliding doors with glass inserts

As for accessories, you can stock up on a number of wooden wedges and a square beam measuring 50 or 40 (mm) for attaching the guides.

Installing sliding interior doors with your own hands: video tutorial for non-professionals

As can be seen from the video, even a non-professional can install a sliding interior door with his own hands. Once the desired door design has been selected and the appropriate components have been purchased, installation can begin.

Sliding doors as an element of space zoning in the interior

The most popular models for do-it-yourself installation are sliding interior single-leaf doors. The assembly and fastening of such doors is relatively simple, and at the same time they have general features installation with other types of sliding doors:

Step 1: taking measurements of the doorway

Step 2: assembly of the door structure and pseudo-frame

When you decide to install a door model that moves along the wall, plan the arrangement of furniture and accessories so that they are not in the area of the door movement.

Step 3: installing the pseudo-box in the opening, aligning it vertically and horizontally

Step 4: Attaching the Top Rail

Step 5: attaching staples to the upper end of the door leaf

Don't skimp on accessories! When choosing a sliding mechanism for an interior door, make a choice in favor of quality products. This determines how softly, silently and how long the mechanism will function.

Step 6: Installing the Roller Carriages in the Top Rail

Step 7: Adjusting the Position of the Roller Carriages

Step 8: Attaching the Bottom Guide Rail

  • All that remains is to use a decorative strip to hide the beam with the guide rail, attach the trim and plugs at the fastening points.

Sliding systems with a sliding door inside the wall. Do-it-yourself installation specifics

For interior sliding systems, the doors of which are “hidden” into the wall, the installation technology is somewhat different. This does not apply to the basic principles of assembly and fastening sliding mechanism, but rather calculations and preparatory work on the construction of false walls. The door will be rolled into the niche of this wall or a cassette will be installed (if you purchased a door with a cassette block):

Step 1: arranging the frame for the double wall partition

Step 2: designing a space inside the wall for the sliding door to move

Step 3: covering the false wall with plasterboard and finishing

When determining the installation location of the limiter on the top rail inside the cassette, do not forget to take into account the thickness of the decorative trim that will frame the opening.

Step 4: sliding door, sliding inside the wall

Installing sliding doors with your own hands is a process that does not require professional skills or effort. Enough to have minimum required tools and feel free to begin installation yourself. Accurate measurements, following the recommendations - and your room will be transformed by a functional and stylish sliding door. In addition, self-installation will “balance” the costs of purchasing structures that are more expensive in price than swing analogues.

To install interior doors you will need 2 people Doors play a huge role in the arrangement of an apartment. Interior passages are closed with such structures to more clearly divide the house into functional zones. Since the construction industry does not stand still, new finishing options are constantly being invented doorways. One of the most popular ways to design entrance blocks is sliding doors. Read on to learn how to install them yourself.

What is included in the set of interior doors

Installing sliding interior doors is a responsible undertaking. It is very important that the door kit you purchase contains all the necessary components. If it turns out that the set was missing some element, then you will not be able to install the structure in the doorway yourself, and it will be very difficult to prove to the seller that he sold you without important fittings. That's why it's so important to know what's included in your sliding door kit.

Before installing interior doors, you should study the purpose of its components.

What is included in the sliding door kit:

  1. Door leaf a mandatory component of any sliding set. It can be made of wood, aluminum, plastic or glass. Do not forget to check this item when purchasing, it must be intact, without damage or defects.
  2. Guides. Depending on the design of the door, there may be two or one of them in a set. They are usually made of metal. The most the best material These are considered to be guides whose design has a built-in tongue that prevents the rollers from jumping out.
  3. Rollers, thrust mechanisms and lower leash. The door rides on rollers on guides; they can have bearings or do without them. Thrust mechanisms limit the position of the open door to the desired point. The lower leash provides the canvas with a softer glide, preventing it from shaking and swaying.
  4. Accessories not always included. It happens that handles and locks have to be purchased separately.
  5. Door frame usually made of the same material as the canvas.

When purchasing a sliding door installation kit, be sure to check that all necessary elements. If something is missing, you can point it out to the seller in time. The instructions that should be included with your purchase will help you check whether the set of sliding doors from a specific manufacturer is filled correctly.

Door guides

Before you begin directly installing the sliding door, it is worth talking separately about the guides. It is their location that dictates how the doors will open.

There are quite a lot of ways to install guides. You can choose one of them depending on your own preferences and the size of the room where such a system will be installed.

Door guides may vary in design, size and quality

So, a guide installed above the doorway allows the canvas to ride along the wall. If the rail is mounted into the frame, then you will get a hidden door system, which, when opened, will slide along the guide, like on a sled, into the frame.

Three main types of guide installation:

  1. Most often, the guides are attached to the top. This installation method reduces the risk of accidental system failure.
  2. The guide located below can be broken by stepping on it with your foot. Therefore, this method is used very rarely, in individual design projects.
  3. The combined fastening of guides is considered the most reliable. In this case, the rails are attached both above and below. This design can support a canvas with a fairly large weight.

If this is your first time installing sliding interior doors yourself, we advise you to choose one of three door arrangement methods. In this case, the guide should be continuous. In this case, you will be able to avoid many mistakes, and you will definitely not ruin your expensive door system.

Installation of sliding doors

When all the materials have been purchased, you can begin to install the door in its place. However, first you need to prepare the doorway. Old for this door design is dismantled and the opening is restored to its proper appearance.

To make it easy to install interior doors, and finished work has pleased you for many years, choose materials only from trusted manufacturers. One of the best manufacturers, producing sliding doors, is the Italian company “LOID”.

You should choose sliding doors based on the design of the room and its size

You also need to immediately install the door frame. It should be at a distance of one cm from the clean floor.

How to properly install a sliding interior door yourself:

  1. From the top edge of the box, a distance equal to the width of the guide is measured upward. At this height, a beam is attached, the length of which is equal to the length of the guide. In this case, the middle of the beam should be located at the level of the border of the door frame where the leaf will move when opening.
  2. A guide is attached to the beam using hardware. It should pass strictly through the center of the beam.
  3. If necessary, you can mount the bottom rail on the floor. In order not to damage the floor or the sliding system, the lower guide is protected by a threshold.
  4. Assembling the door leaf involves hanging rollers on its upper end on which the structure will move. A groove is knocked out at the bottom end of the door (usually it is already in the door).
  5. To limit the opening of the door, special flags are attached to the floor with self-tapping screws. They will not allow the canvas to go beyond the extreme point.
  6. A handle and locking mechanism are installed on the door that has not yet been hung. This must be done so carefully as not to damage the canvas.
  7. The door rollers are inserted into the guides. The door movement is checked. If everything is in order, rubber stops are inserted into the guides.
  8. On last stage All structural components are decorated. They close the door frame and the beam with the top guide.

The described door installation option is quite simple. Unlike installing a system that fits into a pencil case, even a non-professional can handle the assembly of such a structure.

Self-installation of a double interior door

Installing a double interior door does not take much more time. Of course, there are different options for installing such structures, but if you are not a professional, then it is better to choose the simplest one.

Before installing interior doors, you should watch a training video with a master class

Double sliding doors look good only in rooms big size, where you can make a wide doorway.

Double sliding doors are installed using the same technology as a conventional compartment design. However, you will have to install the rollers on not one, but two canvases. The doorway for this design option should be slightly smaller than the width of the two panels. The track should also be at least twice the width of the two doors.

Sliding doors can be a very good solution for those who strive to maximize the use of living space in a house or apartment. The advantages of such doors are quite obvious, since in addition to the fact that sliding doors save space and allow you to make any room visually wider and larger, they can also bring something new and unexpected into the interior. That is why so many people are interested in how to install sliding interior doors with their own hands. It should be noted that this procedure is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance; in our article we will describe the entire installation process step by step.

Preparing for the installation process

Usually the kit already contains everything you need to install the doors. However, some people prefer to independently choose the elements of interior doors and sliding systems, such as fittings, wanting to achieve a special style and design from the purchased doors.

It is important to consider the placement of the structure.

In order for the installation of sliding interior doors to be successful, you should be well prepared for this. Preparation consists of determining which side doorway the sliding system will be attached.

In order to choose best option, you should analyze your everyday behavior. Carefully study and remember how you move around your house or apartment. In this case, everything should be taken into account: your route to the furthest rooms, some features of the daily route around the apartment that are known only to you. Typically, sliding doors are placed on the side of the room you enter, as this is more correct from an aesthetic point of view, but this decision is not justified in all cases.

The space occupied by the retractable door leaf cannot be occupied by furniture, so it is quite logical to assume that it is more correct to mount it on the side of the corridor, since usually there is practically no furniture in the corridor. How to install the interior sliding doors you purchased is up to you.

Installation of sliding doors

When installing sliding interior doors without anyone's help, purely with your own hands, the first step is to make the necessary marks on the wall, which will help in securing the guide. If you are securing the bottom rail, then recessing it into the floor may be a very good option.

Of course, it is best if this point was thought out during the process of creating the floor covering, since in this case there will be significantly fewer problems with installing the lower guide.

Next, we proceed to installing the upper guide; its installation is carried out at a level that exceeds the height of the door leaf by approximately 15-20 mm. The installation of guides should be treated very carefully; the evenness of their installation should always be checked with a level, this is very important point, so if you install the lower guide not completely horizontally, then over time this can lead to the fact that the system we installed itself will begin to shift towards the tilt, which will complicate the operation of the entire sliding mechanism.

Attaching the top guide.

A very important point is correctly calibrated dimensions: for example, the length of the guide should be twice the width of the door leaf, plus about 4-5 cm more for reserve.

The upper guide can be secured with brackets, but when the sliding interior doors are very massive, the upper guide is installed using a wooden beam, which should be attached to the wall, and the guide should be attached to it.

We work with the door leaf, fasten the holders and fittings

In order for the further installation of the interior sliding doors you purchased to be successful (for a better understanding of the process, we recommend studying the numerous video materials on our website), we proceed to working with the door leaf. First of all, we attach the brackets to the door leaf; they are necessary to ensure that the door leaf rests on the roller carriages. We fasten the staples according to the instructions; in order to find their location, we retreat 1 cm from the edges of the upper end of the door. It is best in this case to use a holder in the form of a clamp, the only exception is if you are installing an accordion sliding door. Another exception can be called completely glass doors, in this case special rubber holders in the form of clamps are used.

Accordion door.

Let us repeat that the installation of a sliding interior door will be much more understandable after watching the video in this article, because it is better to see once than to hear (read) a hundred times.

Installing the door leaf

After the door leaf is ready for installation, and the guide is secured, we proceed to installing the door leaf itself. At this stage of installing sliding interior doors, you should call an assistant, since you cannot do it yourself. The role of the assistant is that he must hold the door leaf, and in the meantime you must insert the carriages into the groove of the guide. If you have completed this and the door leaf “sits” normally, then feel free to move on to the next stage.

Installation of limiters and closers

Stoppers are necessary to prevent carriages with rollers from falling out of the guide. In this case, it is very important to pay attention to how the stops are distributed, this is especially important if you are installing a folding or multi-section door. In most cases, stoppers are used as stoppers, which are made taking into account the shape of the guide, as well as stoppers in the form of a pin, which are inserted in certain places of the guide to perform their task.

Also, regarding the limiters: it is better to choose limiters with special stops, which are made of soft plastic or rubber. Such stops can deprive you of various unpleasant sounds when operating doors, and also significantly extend the service life of the sliding system.

Since most of the installation stages have already been completed, now the question of how to install store-bought interior sliding doors with your own hands is becoming more and more obvious.

We fix the extensions and platbands

Further installation of sliding interior doors with your own hands involves fastening such elements of the system as extensions and platbands. Platbands perform a protective function; they protect the mechanism from dust and debris, and are also necessary to make the structure more pleasant to look at.

In order to continue installing sliding interior doors with your own hands (again, at this stage we recommend that you first study video and photo materials on the topic), you should screw special brackets to the wall, on which the platbands will be attached.

Also, the platbands can be attached using special latches that are attached to the guide.

This option may be preferable if you want no traces of fasteners to remain on the outside of the door.

A process such as installing a sliding interior door with your own hands would not be complete without a limiting structure against which the door would rest when it is closed. A wooden beam can act as such a limiting structure, but for this it must have a special finish. Also, a special profile can be used as such a design; it can usually be purchased along with fittings.

Various door handles.

Such a structure must be installed strictly vertically; a plumb line can be used for this purpose. The profile itself should contain the counterpart of the locking mechanism for door lock. The process of installing this very mate must be performed after the system has been adjusted and installed along the guide.

As you can see, sliding interior doors are quite easy to install yourself and their installation is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance.

Final check and adjustment of the entire structure

Since we have already installed all the guides and checked everything carefully, adjusting the door should be done more to obtain a visual effect, that is, position the door the way you like best and in the form in which it best suits the surrounding interior.

It is very good if the door leaf fits tightly and securely to the structure that limits it. You should also check the movement of the door: it should move strictly parallel to the floor, without any bends or irregularities. But such bends and irregularities simply should not occur if you have thoroughly checked everything before using special devices. To achieve a good result, you can safely improvise with the settings of the door, because most problems with its functioning can be easily fixed.

Installing sliding interior doors will be much easier to understand if the manufacturer’s instructions were not thrown away along with the packaging for a set of doors, but were carefully studied, because each manufacturer has its own characteristics that go beyond what is described in the article.

An interior element such as sliding interior doors can be an excellent solution for the interior, but their installation will not big problem when studying relevant materials (photos, videos and this article) on its implementation.
