World Cup of all years. Main figures and record holders of the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is a tournament among national teams, held once every four years under the auspices of the International Football Federation (Federation Internationale de Football Association, FIFA; FIFA). To date, 20 world championships have taken place. From June 14 to July 15, 2018 in eleven cities Russia will take place 21st FIFA World Cup.

The record for the number of championship titles belongs to the Brazilian national team. She won the tournament five times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002). The Brazilians are also the only team to take part in all the final stages of the World Championships without exception (20 in total).

Only twice in history have teams managed to defend the championship title: Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962) won two tournaments in a row. No team in history has won the world championship three times in a row. The Italian national team was world champion for 16 years (1934-1950) due to the fact that tournaments were not held in 1942 and 1946.

The German team suffered the greatest number of defeats in World Cup finals - four. Among the teams that did not become champions, the Netherlands team holds the lead in this indicator - three finals.

The German team played the most matches at the World Championships (106 games), the least was the Indonesian team, which played one match at the 1938 tournament under the name Dutch East Indies.

The Brazilian team won the most victories at the world championships (70 matches won), while the Mexicans suffered the most defeats - 24.

The Hungarian team scored the most goals during one tournament in 1954 - 27. The Swiss team at the 2006 World Cup set a record without conceding a single goal (the Swiss lost on penalties in the 1/8 finals). The longest “dry” streak at world championships belongs to the Italian national team and its goalkeeper Walter Zenga (517 minutes at the 1990 tournament). The Republic of Korea team conceded the most goals during one tournament in 1954 (16 goals in two matches).

Among the players participating in the World Championships, the most titled is the Brazilian Pele, who won the tournament three times (1958, 1962, 1970).

Mexico's Antonio Carbajal and Germany's Lothar Matthäus are the only players to have competed in five World Cups. In 2018, Mexican Rafael Marquez, who previously competed in four world championships and is included in the national team’s application for the tournament in Russia, can match them. Lothar Matthäus holds the record for the most matches at world championships - 25 games.

The youngest player to play in a World Cup final is Northern Ireland international Norman Whiteside. In 1982 in Spain, he entered the field at the age of 17 years and 41 days. The oldest player in the history of the World Championships is Cameroonian Roger Milla. In 1994, he played against the Russian national team at the age of 42 years and 39 days. In the same match, Milla became the oldest scorer of a goal. The youngest scorer of a goal in the World Cup is the Brazilian Pele. In 1958 he scored against Wales at the age of 17 years and 239 days.

The top scorer in the final stages of the World Cup is German striker Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals in 2002-2014. The leader in the number of goals in a single tournament is the French national team player Juste Fontaine. At the 1958 World Cup he scored 13 goals.

Russian national team striker Oleg Salenko holds the record for the most goals scored in one World Cup match: in 1994, he hit the Cameroon team five times. Englishman Geoffrey Hurst is the only football player who managed to score a hat-trick in the final of the world championship (1966).

The fastest goal in the history of the tournament was scored by Turkish national team striker Hakan Sukur. In the match for third place at the 2002 World Cup, he hit the goal of the Republic of Korea team in the 11th second of the match.

The largest number of goals scored by a team in one match is 10 (in 1982, the Hungarians beat the El Salvador team with a score of 10:1). The most successful match remains the meeting between Austria and Switzerland at the 1954 World Cup, which the Austrians won with a score of 7:5.

Among goalkeepers, the record holders for the number of clean sheets held are Englishman Peter Shilton and Frenchman Fabien Barthez (10 matches each). Goalkeepers of the national teams of Mexico and Saudi Arabia Antonio Carbajal and Mohamed ad-Deaiya conceded the most goals at the world championships: 25 goals were scored against them each.

The only coach who twice led his team to the championship is the Italian Vittorio Pozzo (1934, 1938). The coach of the German national team, Helmut Schön, played the most matches as a head coach at the World Championships. He led the team in 25 games.

Brazilian Mario Zagallo won the World Cup four times in different capacities: twice as a player, once as a head coach and once as an assistant coach. Another football player who won the tournament as a player and as a head coach is the German Franz Beckenbauer.

The 1954 World Cup in Switzerland went down in history as the most productive: then an average of 5.38 goals were scored per game. The least productive was the 1990 World Championship in Italy (an average of 2.21 goals per match).

The highest average attendance of matches was recorded at the 1994 World Cup in the USA (an average of 68 thousand 991 spectators for each game of the tournament). The record for the largest number of fans at a single match was set in 1950. Almost 200 thousand spectators gathered in the stands of the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro to watch the decisive match of the tournament between Brazil and Uruguay.

1930, Uruguay final match: Uruguay - Argentina, 4:2

Dorado (12), Sea (57), Iriarte (68), Castro (89) - Peucelje (20), Stabile (37)

The first World Cup was timed to coincide with the centenary of Uruguay's independence. The entire tournament took place in one city - Montevideo. The Europeans did not want to sail across the Atlantic. The organizers covered the costs, but only France, Yugoslavia, Romania and Belgium reached the goal. Only the Balkans made it to the playoffs and were defeated by Uruguay - 1:6. Before the final, the opponents could not agree whose ball to play - the Argentinean or the Uruguayan. We decided to use each one in half. Uruguay forward Castro was missing one arm, which did not stop him from scoring a goal in the final. The last participant in the final, Francisco Varaglio, died on August 30, 2010 at the age of 100.

1934, Italy Italy - Czechoslovakia, 2:1

Orsi (81), Schiavio (95) - Puig (76)

The tournament lasted only 15 days. Now South America has boycotted the World Cup. Uruguay refused to defend the title, Argentina and Brazil put up reserves. But for the first time Africa played at the World Cup. True, the Egyptian team immediately lost to the Hungarians (2:4) and returned to Cairo. The main spectator in Turin at the Stadio Mussolini arena was Duce Benito Mussolini himself. The German national team competed under the fascist flag. For the first time there was a hat-trick: German Konen scored three goals for Belgium. And a week later, a Czech with a tongue-twister name, Oldrich Nejedly, hit the German goal three times. In the final, Monty played for Italy, who at the 1930 World Cup played for... Argentina in the final.

1938, France Italy - Hungary, 4:2

Kolaussi (6, 35), Piola (16, 82) - Titkosh (8), Saroshi (70)

FIFA announced that the tournament would be held in turn in South America and Europe, but gave the World Cup not to Argentina, but to France. The South Americans were offended and again declared a boycott. Only Brazil arrived. Austria won a place in the final group, but Germany soon annexed it, taking the best Austrian players into its national team. The vacant place was filled by Sweden. The only case where two players played poker in one match was the Brazilian Leonidas and the Pole Wilimovski. Brazil won 6:5, and Leonidas received the nickname Black Diamond. For the first time, a world champion defended his title. Italian head coach Pozzo used only 14 players, the rest were tourists.

1950, Brazil Uruguay - Brazil, 2:1

Schiaffino (66), Gija (79) - Friasa (47)

Tournaments in 1942 and 1946 were canceled due to World War II. Germany and Japan were not allowed to play at all. India withdrew under the pretext that it was expensive to fly to Brazil. In fact, FIFA banned playing barefoot, which the Indians could not tolerate. A year before the championship, the Torino club, whose players formed the backbone of the Italian national team, crashed in a plane crash. Italy did not film, but sailed to Brazil by ship. “Only three people silenced the Maracana: Frank Sinatra, the Pope and me,” said the scorer of the winning goal, Uruguayan Alcides Guigia. A dozen Brazil fans died of heart attacks.

1954, Switzerland Germany - Hungary, 3:2

Morlock (10), Ran (18, 84) - Puskas (6), Cibor (8)

The Soviet Union lost the 1952 Olympics and refused to go to the World Cup. The officials decided that our football was too raw and there was no need to embarrass ourselves. The Hungarians were considered the main favorites. The team led by Puskás and Kocsis even knocked out Brazil, but went down in the final, torpedoed by the Germans. Although in the group match, Germany lost to Hungary - 3:8. Then coach Herberger did not field the main players, and defender Liebrich seriously injured Puskás. FIFA issued a memorandum: “The German players deservedly won, but Hungary became the best team in the championship.” In 26 matches of the tournament, 140 goals were scored. 5.38 goals per game is a record in World Cup history.

1958, Sweden Brazil - Sweden, 5:2

Vava (9, 32), Pele (55, 90), Zagallo (68) - Lindholm (4), Simonsson (80)

For the first time, big football was broadcast on TV to the whole world. For the only time, four British teams played in the World Cup: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. 17-year-old Brazilian Pele made his debut, becoming the second scorer of the tournament (6 goals). USSR national team debut. In the group we played with England (2:2), Austria (2:0) and Brazil (0:2). And in the quarterfinals they lost to the Swedes (0:2). The Union national team lacked the bright forward Eduard Streltsov, who went to prison on charges of rape. The top scorer was the Frenchman Juste Fontaine, although his team only took bronze. In the final, Pele made a double and was so emotional that he needed help from doctors.

1962, Chile Brazil - Czechoslovakia, 3:1

Amarildo (17), Zito (69), Vava (78) - Masopust (15)

In 1960, a powerful earthquake occurred in Chile (magnitude 9.5). They wanted to take away the tournament, but the President of the Chilean Football Federation, Dittborn, exclaimed: “Leave the World Cup, we already have nothing left!” He died a month before the start, and the opening match Uruguay - Colombia (2:1) was held at the stadium named after Dittborn. The USSR won the group (2:0 with Yugoslavia, 4:4 with Colombia, 2:1 with Uruguay), but lost to Chile in the quarterfinals (1:2). In the match with the Uruguayans, the referee counted Chislenko's goal, but captain Netto pointed out to the referee the mistake: the ball flew into the hole in the net. This is considered an example of fair play. The final took place at the National Stadium in Santiago, where 11 years later dictator Pinochet would hold 40 thousand opponents of the military regime. The final was judged by our Latyshev - and did not give a penalty for the handball of the Brazilian Santos. In Czechoslovakia they were offended: “The judge showed a lack of understanding of the tasks of socialism!”

1966, England England - Germany, 4:2

Hurst (18, 101, 120), Peters (78) - Haller (12), Weber (90)

On the eve of the tournament, the prize - the Jules Rimet Cup - was stolen in London. A week later, he was found in the bushes by a dog named Pickles (Cucumber). The first mascot was Willie the lion wearing a T-shirt with the British flag. The best performance of our team! 3:0 with the DPRK, 1:0 with Italy, 2:1 with Chile in the group, 2:1 with the Hungarians in the quarterfinals. And fourth place after defeats from Germany (1:2) and Portugal (1:2) in the bronze match. England became the champion for the only time. Hurst scored a hat-trick in the final. The third goal was scored by linesman Bahramov, although the moment was very controversial. The Germans gave the referee the nickname Herr Zwei-drei (Mr. 2:3). According to legend, when Bahramov was asked before his death whether there was a goal, he answered: “Stalingrad.” Like, this is revenge on the Germans for the war.

1970, Mexico Brazil - Italy, 4:1

Pele (18), Gerson (66), Jairzinho (71), Alberto (86) - Boninsegna (37)

El Salvador defeated Honduras in the qualifying group, and a military conflict began between the countries. It was called La guerra del fútbol (The Football War). 6,000 people died. The USSR took first place in the group, ahead of Mexico (0:0), Belgium (4:1) and El Salvador (2:0). But in the quarterfinals they ran into Uruguay (0:1). Esparrago scored a goal in the 116th minute, although before that the ball went out of bounds, our team stopped the game, but the referee did not blow the whistle. The Brazilians became champions for the third time in a row and received the Jules Rimet Cup, the FIFA president who organized the first World Cup, forever. Trophy in the form of the goddess of victory Nike (30 cm, 1.8 kg of gold). And in 1983, the cup was stolen from the office of the Brazilian Football Federation, and it disappeared forever. Pele became the only player to win the World Cup three times.

1974, Germany Germany - Holland, 2:1

Breitner (25), Müller (43) - Neeskens (2)

England, Spain, France, Portugal, Hungary, and the USSR did not qualify for the World Cup. Holland demonstrated new model- “total football”. Its essence is that the whole team must practice defense and attack. But in the final, the Dutch were run over by a “German car”, in which Müller, nicknamed Little Fat Gerd, was shining. A couple of days before the final, the tabloid Bild came out with a story that the Dutch leader Cruyff was having fun in the pool with naked German women and drinking champagne. The guy had to make excuses to his wife: “Nothing happened!” But he was unsettled. For the first time at the championship, doping control was used. The first victim was the Haitian Jean-Joseph, who was expelled in disgrace.

1978, Argentina Argentina - Holland, 3:1

Kempes (38, 105), Bertoni (115) - Nanninga (82)

The USSR lost to the Hungarians in the qualifying round and again did not qualify for the World Cup. After the match between Peru and Scotland (3:1), ephedrine was found in the blood of Scottish forward Willie Johnston. The next morning the newspapers came out with the headlines “Shame on you, Willie!” Argentina defeated Peru in the semi-final group with the required score (6:0) and reached the final, leaving Brazil behind. The world press cried out that the hosts had played a fixed match. And the Briton David Yallop even wrote the book “How the Game was Stole.” They say that the head of the Argentine junta, Videla, handed over 50 million dollars and 35 thousand tons of grain to Peruvian officials. FIFA did not investigate, but simply banned Yallop's book. Before the tournament, Argentina, to the surprise of many, released 17-year-old prodigy Maradona from the squad. But she still became a champion.

1982, Spain Italy - Germany, 3:1

Rossi (57), Tardelli (69), Altobelli (81) - Breitner (83)

The tournament began to be called “mundi-al”, which means “world” in Spanish. Hungary won the biggest victory in World Cup history, defeating El Salvador 10:1. In the match France - Kuwait, the Soviet referee Stupar counted a dubious goal by the French. Kuwaiti Sheikh Fahd al-Sabah came onto the field, took the team to the locker room and began to demand that Stupar cancel the goal. He agreed and... was disqualified for life by FIFA: he did not stand up for the honor of the referee's uniform. The USSR left the group (1:2 with Brazil, 3:0 with New Zealand, 2:2 with Scotland), but in the second round it stumbled against Poland (1:0 with Belgium, 0:0 with the Poles) - we played defensively when victory was needed. The top scorer was the Italian Rossi (6 goals), who in 1979 was disqualified for two years and sent to prison for betting fraud.

1986, Mexico Argentina - Germany, 3:2

Brown (23), Valdano (55), Burruchaga (83) - Rummenigge (74), Feller (80)

Colombia was preparing to play the role of organizer, but declined due to economic problems. Mexico hosted the World Cup for the second time, although eight months earlier it suffered a devastating earthquake (killing 25 thousand people). The tournament was a stellar one for Maradona. The Argentine scored two super goals in the quarter-finals with England (2:1) - after a gorgeous solo pass (“goal of the century”) and with his hand, which the referee did not notice. Maradona acknowledged this and said: "It was the hand of God." The USSR played brilliantly (6:0 with Hungary, 1:1 with France, 2:0 with Canada), but in the 1/8 finals we were beaten by Belgium (4:3) with the help of Swedish referee Fredriksson. In the final, Maradona made a golden pass to Burruchaga. At home, the success of the Argentina national team was celebrated by 30 million fans.

1990, Italy West Germany - Argentina, 1:0

Breme (85)

The USSR, England and Greece applied to host the 1990 World Cup. But in 1984 this right was given to Italy. The Union was falling apart, and the national team was dying. We didn't even make it out of the group (0:2 with Romania, 0:2 with Argentina, 4:0 with Cameroon). Cameroon, under the leadership of our coach Nepomniachtchi, became a troublemaker, reaching the quarterfinals, where they foolishly failed to beat England. In the 1/8 finals match, the Dutchman Rijkaard famously spit at the German Feller. Both were removed. The Germans reached the final for the third time in a row. And yet they pulled Argentina! Maradona accused FIFA of deliberately killing them and Brehme's penalty was a fake.

1994, USA Brazil - Italy, 0:0 (3:2 pen.)

Salenko scored five goals as Russia beat Cameroon 6-1 and won the Golden Boot as the World Cup's top scorer. But the team did not make it out of the group (0:2 with Brazil, 1:3 with Sweden). Cameroonian Milla became the oldest football player in the history of the World Cup - 42 years and 39 days. The great Maradona was removed from the tournament simply because ephedrine, norephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norpseudoephedrine and methylephedrine were found in his blood. Fourth place was unexpectedly taken by the Bulgarian team, in which all the names of the players ended in “ov”. For the first time, World Cup gold was awarded on penalties. Alas, the Italians missed their forward with a pigtail - Baggio. The Brazilian Zagallo collected the largest collection of gold - as a player (1958, 1962), head coach (1970) and second coach (1994).

1998, France France - Brazil, 3:0 Beckham receives a red card for the go-ahead signal. England loses to Argentina in the round of 16. Since then it has appeared popular expression: "It wasn't Beckham's day." The Croatian team made its debut at the World Cup and immediately took bronze. On the eve of the final, Ronaldo was poisoned. He entered the field with difficulty, but Brazil lost in all respects to France and the magnificent Zidane. Each time, for good luck, French defender Blanc kissed his goalkeeper Barthez on the bald head. And throughout the entire tournament, the world champions conceded only two goals!

2002, Korea - Japan The last time Russia participated in the World Cup. We did not make it out of the group (2:0 with Tunisia, 0:1 with Japan, 2:3 with Belgium), and the hooligans staged the famous pogrom at Manezhka, where a huge television screen was installed. For the first time, an Asian team reached the semifinals - South Korea distinguished itself. The fastest goal in history was scored by Turk Hakan Sukur - in 10.8 seconds in the match with the Koreans (3:2) for bronze. German leader Ballack missed the final due to too many yellow cards. Without him, Ronaldo famously dealt with Germany and received the Golden Boot. In the match Croatia - Australia (2:2), British referee Poll got excited, showing Simunic three yellow cards at once. Although I should have sent the Croatian off after the second one. The hero of the 1/8 finals Portugal - Holland (1:0) was the Russian referee Ivanov - he issued 16 yellow cards and sent off four players. Zidane received the Golden Ball as the best player at the World Cup. Although he let the French down in the final, buying into Materazzi’s provocation. The Italian threw something offensive at him, Zizou hit Materazzi in the chest with his shiny bald head and received a red card. Soon, world champion Materazzi wrote the book “What I Really Told Zidane.”

2010, South Africa Spain - Holland, 1:0 (5:3 pen.)

Iniesta (116)

For the first time, the World Cup was held in Africa. Vuvuzelas became a feature - long horns that African tribes used to scare away baboons. Thousands of vuvuzelas roared obnoxiously in stadiums in South Africa. Dejan Stankovic managed to play at three world championships for three different teams - Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and now just Serbia. After the match Portugal - DPRK (7:0), which North Korea showed in live, head coach Kim Jong Hoon was interrogated for six hours and sent to forced labor. When in the 1/8 finals the Argentinean Tevez scored against Mexico from a two-meter offside position, and the referees overlooked the correct goal of the British Lampard against the Germans, FIFA thought about introducing video replays. For the first time, two countries played in the final with monarchical form board. King Juan Carlos I won.

There were five contenders to host the first World Cup: Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and Uruguay. The majority of delegates voted for Uruguay. This choice was supported by two victories of the national team of this country at the Olympic tournaments in 1924 and 1928 and the firm promise of the representative of Uruguay to fulfill all financial conditions of FIFA.

Special attention football is given attention during major tournaments. football (often called the FIFA World Cup or World Cup) is the most ambitious international competition in this species sports Countries from all continents of the planet are fighting for the right to receive the coveted trophy.

The tournament is attended by 32 states, which are selected over three years. The World Cup is held every four years. The Germany national football team is the defending champion. The previous championship was held in Brazil. The next one will take place in 2018 in Russia.

So, having analyzed the main features of the FIFA World Cup, let’s move directly to the main topic of the article, namely, let’s look at who won this serious trophy and when.

Uruguay

Almost all world football champions have become medal winners more than once. In 1930, the first ever World Cup took place. At that time, Uruguay was the strongest football country and was considered the clear favorite. The team took first place in the group, beating Romania and Peru. In the final she had to meet Argentina. All world football champions dream of holding similar events in their countries and fight for prizes with even greater zeal. The home championship for the team turned out to be successful. With a score of 4:2, Uruguay beat their opponent and received the trophy.

All world football champions dream of defending their title at every World Cup, but the Uruguayans could not do this. The next World Cup, which they managed to win, was held in 1950 in Brazil. In the final stage of the tournament (by the way, once in history) four teams competed - Uruguay, Brazil, Sweden and Spain. Brazil, who were the favorites, lost to Uruguay and gave them first place.

Italy

All world football champions can envy the number of titles the Italian team has won. She was able to win the World Cup four times. Italy was chosen as the venue for the tournament in 1934. Having beaten the USA, Spain, Austria and Czechoslovakia along the way, the host country was able to win its first trophy.

Italy is the 1938 FIFA World Cup champion. The World Cup was held in France. The most interesting match was the match between the hosts and the Italians in the quarterfinals, where the latter won with a score of 3:1. In the final, Italy defeated Hungary and took their second world title in a row.

The team had to wait forty-two years for the next victory in the tournament. In 1982, the venue was Spain, which prepared seventeen stadiums for the event, which was a record at that time. However, it was not the final match that was sold out, but the opening match between Argentina and Belgium. Italy was able to reach the final, where it turned out to be stronger than Germany.

In 2006, the team managed to become a four-time world champion. The World Cup was held in Germany, which coped with this difficult task with distinction. In the final, France lost to Italy on penalties, thus losing the title.

FRG (Germany)

Germany, like Italy, managed to win the trophy four times. The national team always demonstrated good football, but the 1954 World Cup, held in Switzerland, became truly successful. The final match of the tournament, in which the Germans beat the Hungarians with a score of 3:2, attracted the greatest attention from the audience.

I've been waiting for the second German Cup for twenty years. In 1974, the honor of hosting the World Cup fell to West Germany. In the final match, the Germans beat the Dutch with a score of 2:1.

Germany performed well in the next three championships, finishing second twice. In 1990, Italy took over to host the championship (for the second time). Most of the spectators came to the quarterfinal match, where the Germans managed to defeat the Dutch again. In the final, Germany managed to beat Argentina with a minimal score.

The last World Cup, held in Brazil in 2014, the German football team managed to win for the fourth time. This World Cup became one of the most spectacular in history. The host country failed to reach the final. It was Germany who stopped it, defeating it with a score of 7:1. The last match took place against Argentina. In a bitter struggle, scoring only one goal, the Germans managed to take away their fourth world champion trophy.

Brazil

Brazil is the world champion in football, which was able to win this title more than any other country, namely five times. The 1958 World Cup, held in Sweden, brought the team its first trophy. The Brazil-USSR match gained the most popularity, in which the first managed to win. In the final, the Brazilians defeated the Swedes with a score of 5:2.

The second title did not have to wait long. The very next World Cup, held in Chile, brought Brazil a new trophy. The team managed to reach the final and win it against Czechoslovakia, simultaneously beating the host of the World Cup.

Brazil won the third trophy in 1970, at the World Cup in Mexico. In the final, she managed to beat Italy with a score of 4:1 and received the golden goddess for eternal storage.

It was only 24 years later that the team’s trophy collection was replenished. This World Cup was held in the USA, where the popularization of football was required. The team met Italy again in the final and won in a penalty shootout.

Brazil won its fifth championship title in 2002 at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. In the final, the Brazilians faced the Germans, but lost with a score of 0:2.

Argentina

To the strongest team South America managed to win its first world title only in 1978. It was Argentina that became the host country of this World Cup. Even several new arenas were built for the grand event, and the team eventually beat the Netherlands and won the coveted trophy.

The second title did not have to wait long. Argentina received the title of the strongest team on the planet already in 1986, at the World Cup in Mexico. In the final, Argentina managed to beat Germany.

England

The founder of football was able to win the World Cup Cup only once in history. In 1966, England hosted the World Cup and defeated Germany in the final. Subsequently, the team failed to achieve similar results again.

France

In 1998, the updated World Cup was hosted by France. Since then, 32 teams have taken part in the tournament. Having reached the final, the team beat Brazil, winning their first trophy.

Spain

Many people are familiar with this team. Despite their amazing performance, Spain is a world champion who could only lift the trophy once. This happened in South Africa, where in the final the Spaniards beat the Dutch with a minimal score.

Difficult to find on our planet sports game, which could rival football in popularity. Being one of the most available types sport for all walks of life, it is interesting to people both far from competition and to fans at any level. But still, the top remains the championship on a planetary scale - the main competitions held every four years. On this moment The history of the FIFA World Cup includes 20 tournaments.

First tournament

The choice of the venue for the first world football championship in favor of Uruguay was not accidental. This team won the last two international tournaments in Olympic Games, and for its merits the South American power was awarded the honorary right to host an international competition. This happened in 1930, when the first world championship in history took place. Football was then destined to win the hearts of people all over the world. 13 participating countries were registered to participate. The home stadium in Montevideo became truly golden for the Uruguayan team. It was there that the home team won the first championship gold medals in history.

FIFA World Cup: history of victories

Subsequently, world tournaments were held with a certain regularity - once every four years. The exception was the forties, when two competitions were missed due to World War II.

The Second World Championship, held in Italy, pleased fans with a new layout. The organizers used the so-called Olympic system, where the loser was eliminated from further competition. And again the hosts, this time the Italian team, became the strongest.

After the war, world football championships resumed in 1950. The first post-war championship was entrusted to the Brazilian federation. Local fans reasonably expected the triumph of their players. The scheme of tournament games was again modified, now the final four identified the strongest in a round-robin system. Before last game The Brazilian team was satisfied with a draw, but they lost to their eternal rivals, the Uruguayans, with a score of 1-2 and became only second. The time of the “pentakampions” would come in a few years, and at that time the whole country was plunged into mourning.

Brazil era

The sixth World Cup, held on Swedish fields, marked the hegemony of Brazilian football for many years to come. In Sweden, this team was head and shoulders above its opponents. Just look at the results of the semi-final and final matches. Both of these games ended with the same score 5-2 in favor of the Brazilian team.

In 1962, at the World Championships, which were held in many respects, the situation was repeated. Once again, the Brazilian team trounces its rivals, losing only one point to the Czechoslovakian team in the group stage. The Brazilians had a chance to get even with their opponents in the final match. And this time the “yellows” were stronger with a score of 3-1.

But at the 1966 world championship, the Brazilian team could not even overcome the group stage. In fairness, it is worth noting that there were reasons for this. The loss of a number of leading players, including Pele, had a detrimental effect on the playing potential of the ball wizards. And the championship was won by its hosts, the players of the England national team, who beat the German national team in the final match with a score of 4-2. For the founders of football, this triumph will remain the only one to this day.

But four years later, at the Mexican World Cup, the Brazilians regained the title of the strongest team on the planet. This time the South American team won six matches out of six, with a total goal difference of 19-7. The final game against the Italians was played with a huge advantage of the Brazilian team and ended in a 4-1 defeat. And again the whole world admired the play of the great Pele.

The era of total football

Time passed, the world changed, and main view sports The coaches experimented more and more with playing tactics, and this began to bear fruit. The 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the history of the results of which showed how great the importance of the coaching staff is, was surprising. The German national team, led by Helmut Schön, triumphantly held a home tournament, winning the second gold in its history.

Subsequently, different teams became winners. But the history of the World Cup has carved out its own niche for Brazilians. None of them managed to repeat the achievement of the South American team, winning two tournaments in a row.
