The article provides reviews from owners and recommendations for do-it-yourself installation. For convenience, the material is provided with video instructions.

What are MDF doors?

The material consists of dried wood fibers and binders, the main of which is lignin. This is a natural raw material, at a price significantly lower than solid wood. This is largely due to the popularity of MDF doors. The design of the canvas consists of wooden frame, enclosed honeycomb filler and sheets chip material on both sides. In addition to the affordable cost, the doors demonstrate the following positive characteristics:

How it works door leaf MDF

  • Resistance to mechanical damage;
  • Durability;
  • Immunity to fungi and mold;
  • Possibility of installation in a room with a humid environment;
  • No deformation due to temperature changes;
  • Ease of installation;
  • Light weight;
  • Fire safety;
  • Does not contain toxic substances.

MDF door leaves can be decorated to look like stone, imitate wood texture, etc. They are often painted in a wide variety of colors. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the sheet used in the structure. This figure should be at least 3-5 mm. The thickness of MDF matters for strength and sound insulation. In addition, the ability to protect against extraneous noise is also affected by the internal filling of the structure.

Important: Corrugated cardboard inside the door leaf does not provide good sound insulation, while polyurethane foam does an excellent job of this function.

How and with what to paint an MDF door

The coloring result directly depends on the chosen paint. The following options are suitable for MDF:

  • Nitro paint;
  • Acrylic;
  • Alkyd;
  • Water-dispersed;
  • Oil enamel.

Working with the majority coloring matter, it is necessary to ensure good ventilation, airing, it is advisable to use a respirator.

One of the significant disadvantages of MDF doors is the difficulty of restoration. Damaged canvas made of this material is extremely difficult to restore. Therefore, it is most often purchased new door instead of the failed one. You can save a lot by purchasing not a laminated version, but a cheaper one that can be painted. In this case, when minimum costs finances and labor, you can get a door that fully matches the entire color scheme of the room.

If you decide to update with painting old door, it needs to be prepared. The canvas is removed from the hinges, and the old coating is completely removed from its surface. This can be done using special washes, a grinder or heating construction hairdryer. Next, the canvas is sanded and, if necessary, puttied.

Before work, all surfaces that are not to be painted are carefully sealed with molar tape. It is recommended to paint directly from top to bottom. The ends are tinted last. Most coloring compounds are applied in two layers. This achieves brightness and color saturation.

DIY installation

The installation of doors made of MDF differs little from similar structures made of other materials. You need to prepare the doorway by cleaning it and adjusting it to size. The box must be tightly inserted into the opening and securely fastened. MDF is capable of bending under the pressure of expanding polyurethane foam. You can avoid this trouble by using special brackets during installation. Or you can place durable plates between the canvas and the box to protect it from deformation. Sometimes a fully assembled door block is installed.

Advice. When installing an MDF door, it is advisable to use foam with low expansion reinforcement. This will reduce the risk of box deformation.

Although the material itself is moisture-resistant, manufacturers rarely laminate or paint the back of the box. It's becoming weak point because moisture gets in from there. To protect the box from deformation, you need to lubricate it yourself. inner side silicone or impregnation.

The next step is to secure and hang the canvas. Be sure to use a level. All distortions are eliminated. Then the fittings are installed and cut into place. Before starting work, it is informative to watch a video clearly showing the process.

Owner reviews

Interior doors made from MDF have received conflicting reviews. Most of negative characteristics are associated with unscrupulous manufacturers or sellers. After all, under beautiful facade it is impossible to see the inner content. So, after the purchase, it turned out that the thickness of the slab was only 2 mm. Which is not enough for a door leaf that is under constant load.

Sometimes thick cardboard is used instead of MDF. The service life of such structures is minimal and the quality is low. A manufacturer who has saved at all stages of production can offer a very attractive price. However, it is precisely because of non-compliance with manufacturing technology that MDF doors have a bad reputation. Owners write that they swell, get very scratched, peel off, etc.

However, doors produced in accordance with the rules and standards have earned flattering reviews. They were purchased from reputable sellers. Owners describe them as easy to care for, durable and truly resistant to high humidity. But their price is no longer as low as most consumers hope.

By approaching the choice of MDF doors wisely and carefully, you can purchase durable and beautiful thing. Caring for a quality product comes down to removing dirt from the surface. Installing such a block will not be difficult. MDF is light in weight and easy to work with.

  • Water-dispersion and water-emulsion. These paints are quick-drying and do not contain substances harmful to health. In addition, they do not emit a strong odor and are durable.
  • Powder and hammer. These options have appeared on the market relatively recently. They are not designed for wood finishing. As a rule, metal sheets are coated with them.
  • Wax and oils. These specific coatings are often purchased for finishing wood. They allow the material to “breathe” and have a restoration effect on damaged surfaces. However, wax coatings are not quick-drying, so it will be possible to use the treated door only after 3-4 days.

  • Acrylic paint available in a wide range of colors.
  • Bituminous, giving a dark brown tint.

  • brush;
  • dry brush;
  • fine pile roller;

Nowadays, there are several leading trends in painting interior door structures:

  • soft and delicate shades, light notes of blue, peach, grassy, pink or lavender color;
  • dark dense shades of brown, cherry, blue and chocolate;
  • rich and rich shades (red, orange and yellow);
  • noble tones imitating natural wood such as wenge, oak, walnut or cedar.

In addition, many designers, when choosing suitable color We recommend that owners adhere to the following recommendations.

  • As for the discreet light colors, then they are best suited for cozy bedrooms or children's rooms, as they create a peaceful and calm atmosphere.
  • If the room has a beautiful white bedroom set, then it is better to choose the door in a similar color color scheme. It can also be complemented with gilded panels.

  • IN wooden house Solid wood canvases treated with transparent oil impregnation will look ideal.
  • For a classic ensemble with antique interior items, you can purchase an interesting artificially aged wooden model.
  • As for the door frame, it should be slightly lighter or darker than the main wall trim.

New canvas painting technology

Previously untreated wood absorbs moisture intensively. If, for example, you put such a cloth in a bathhouse without treating it with special impregnations, it will swell quite soon and simply stop closing securely. This suggests that before directly installing and painting a wooden door, it needs to be properly prepared.

All work must be carried out indoors so that dust and dirt do not fall on the treated canvas.

First, the door without any fittings is laid on a flat and stable plane. As a rule, at the production stage, the blades undergo preliminary grinding, but often they still have minor roughness or protrusions, so it’s worth going through it again grinder or sandpaper.

Before painting, the canvas must be treated with a primer. First, it covers all the recesses of the canvas, and then smooth surfaces.

Since the structures will be in a horizontal position, drips and drops will not appear on them, and the primer will be absorbed as evenly as possible. After this, you need to let the product dry completely and carry out the second treatment.

Now you can proceed directly to painting the canvas. It is better to cover panel models with a roller, and paneled models with a narrow brush. Make sure that the paint is not too thick. If its consistency is such, then it should be diluted with a solvent.

You should not decorate the door with too thick a layer of paint, as such actions can only deteriorate the product. Depending on the covering characteristics, 2-4 layers of paint may be required. Keep in mind that each of them must dry completely before applying the next one. While the door leaf itself dries, you need to process the opening.

If a stain is chosen to finish the new canvas, then there is no need to use a primer.

Dramatic color change

It is possible to repaint a previously primed and painted door yourself at home. First you need to make all the necessary preparations. First of all, the old paint layer is removed. At complete removal After removing the previous layers, you can repaint the door in any color, be it classic brown, white or black, as well as brighter and more colorful tones. However, in the second case, you should check how appropriate the paint will look in the room. To do this, you need to apply it to a couple of boards and attach it to the door leaf.

After these procedures have been completed, you can begin repainting the door according to the algorithm:

  • The canvas needs to be puttied. You can purchase a special composition for wooden doors.
  • Then the putty is dried.

  • After this, you need to sand the surface with sandpaper.
  • Now we apply a layer of primer, oil or wax (you can choose fireproof materials).
  • Doors should be painted from top corner.
  • Small elements are painted with a brush.
  • Paint should be applied exclusively in the direction of the wood grain.

Now you need to let the canvas dry completely. It is advisable that it be in a horizontal position.

How to remove old paint?

To soften the previous layers of paint, you can apply a chemical stripping layer and let it soak into the surface. This work may take about 2 hours. After a while, the old paint will begin to bubble and come away from the door. It can be thoroughly removed with a spatula until the canvas is completely clean.

Also, to remove the old paint, you can heat it up with a hair dryer and remove it with a spatula. While the finish is well heated, it remains as soft as possible and is much easier to remove.

You can use both of these methods. This method is especially often used to clean oil paint applied in many layers.

You can degrease a wooden door wire brush and fine or coarse sandpaper. In particular difficult cases use a plane or aggressive chemical compositions. Plastic models degreased with acetone and white spirit.

How to quickly putty?

Putty is the final stage of preparing the door for painting and does not take much time. Depending on the condition of the canvas, it can be puttied completely or partially. After this, you need to wait until the composition has completely dried and you should go over the door with sandpaper (over the entire surface or in individual areas). There is no need to rush here so as not to damage the canvas.

Coloring with two colors

If you want to paint a door using two different colors, such as contrasting black and white, you will need to apply a base coat first. In this case, white. After this, you should wait for it to dry completely and treat those areas that will be painted in a different shade. You can also cover certain surfaces with adhesive tape as you work to prevent paint of a different color from getting on them.

After the base layer has dried and processed, you can re-glue the tapes onto it and start painting the previously covered areas black.

Making an antique door

If you like vintage style and antique look, then the door can be decorated with patina.

This procedure occurs in several stages:

  • first, the surface of the door is treated with an iron brush;
  • then a white primer is applied;
  • after it dries, a gray patina is applied;
  • her upper layer will need to be removed using a sanding block;
  • Finally, you need to apply at least two layers of enamel.

Made from MDF, you can save money and get a door that fully matches your interior design.

How to paint MDF doors

It is very convenient and practical to paint interior doors with acrylic varnishes and paints. They dry quickly, have almost no odor, and are non-toxic. Accidental drops can be easily cleaned from hands, with flooring. The painted surface is resistant to damage; all dirt can be easily washed off with a regular soap solution.

When determining required quantity LKM should take into account that not only the door leaf will be painted, but also the frame and trim. On average you may need 1 kg acrylic varnish or paint and the same amount of primer to paint one set.

The standard formula for calculating the amount of paintwork needed to paint interior doors is the approximate paint consumption (indicated on the can) plus 10%. Purchasing a small can of putty will help you avoid unnecessary trips to the store if you find small defects in the surface being painted.

To avoid conflicts between paint layers, it is recommended to purchase products from the same manufacturer for wood products.

From a huge variety of colors and shades of acrylic paints, you can always choose your preferred color that is suitable for painting an MDF door and will harmonize with the decor of the room.

To give the paintwork the desired shade, you can additionally buy a special color or use the services of professionals. Typically, construction stores offer paint tinting that allows you to get any of 10,000 shades. In this case, it is more convenient to have your own color sample with you. Please note that:

  • on a large surface bright hues appear darker;
  • color perception depends on lighting - for maximum color assessment, you can go outside with a sample;
  • The finished paint always appears lighter than the sample.

Usually the program professional equipment remembers specific tinting schemes, but it is better to prepare the coloring composition immediately required volume. Small differences in the shade of paintwork materials from different batches will not allow achieving perfect similarity with the previous version of the color.

Tools, equipment

When planning work on painting a door set, you need to prepare in advance necessary tools, Consumables. At the same time, care should be taken to organize the storage of work equipment. This approach will help reduce the time required to carry out work and avoid unplanned expenses.

Set of working tools:

  • brushes – narrow for painting small parts and medium for painting door panels, roller or spray gun;
  • a container for mixing paints and varnishes during manual tinting - it should contain all the paint or varnish required for the work;
  • drill with attachment or mixer - can be rented;
  • working container for paint - a small jar or a special tray if you plan to use a roller;
  • tape, stencils, sponge - if desired, decorate the door leaf with drawings and ornaments;
  • zero sandpaper;
  • gloves;
  • clean rags;
  • solvent.

You should also take care of the work site - cover the floor with paper, prepare wooden blocks, on which you can put an interior door, door frame, platbands. It is necessary to ensure normal conditions with the possibility of safe and convenient movement both during work and during the drying period of paint layers.

How to paint MDF doors

Before applying paint, it is necessary to fill all cracks and cover the door with a layer of primer.

Before painting an MDF interior door, frame elements, platbands, you need to prime them. The primer performs several functions at once:

  • completely removes dust from surfaces;
  • warns extra expense more expensive paints and varnishes;
  • improves adhesive properties;
  • ensures uniform coloring.

At the same time, the priming process helps to detect minor defects surfaces – chips, scratches, cracks.

You can independently tint paint and varnish in only one container and repeat it exactly desired shade in different buckets, most likely, it will not work. Before opening cans of paint, you must once again carefully study the manufacturer's instructions included with the paint. First, you can prepare the paint in a small jar for testing. To correctly evaluate the resulting shade, it is better to wait until the painted sample has completely dried.

  1. A layer of primer is applied to a dry interior door.
  2. Covered with putty small cracks, scratches, chips.
  3. The surface is sanded with fine sandpaper.
  4. A second coat of primer is applied.
  5. Use a brush to paint all the inconvenient places - the ends, the lines of the panel pattern.
  6. The wooden product is painted completely - with a brush, roller or spray gun.
  7. If necessary, apply a second layer of paintwork.

When painting a set of interior doors with acrylic, each stage of work is carried out only after the previous layer has completely dried.

Speed up drying with heating devices, fans, heat guns are not recommended.

LMB on water based slightly raise the wood pile. Therefore, before applying each next layer of acrylic varnish or paint, the previous one is carefully sanded with zero-grade sandpaper.

Of course, there are no trifles in repairs; every job requires attention and respect. But still, there are those that do not require much knowledge, skills, or time. These include deciding how to paint MDF or wooden interior doors.

The choice of what to paint interior doors with is quite large, both in terms of paint color and base.

It is only necessary to choose the right paint specifically for interior work, impeccable from an environmental point of view; all other operations should not cause any difficulties.

The photo shows only a small selection of possible proposals

Although there are a lot of operations ahead.

Painting procedure

The following must be done:

  1. First examine the condition carefully old paint and make one of two decisions:
  • if the old paint “fits” well and it has not lost its appearance, then it is not at all necessary to remove it completely, just very carefully (but there can be no compromises here) remove the waves and bumps,
  • completely putty them, and,
  • clean with sandpaper;

The instructions do not oblige you to remove the old paint first, but it is very advisable to do this

  • If you decide to remove the old paint, then you cannot do without special devices:
  • first we try to move as far as possible with the help of a regular spatula, being very careful with the wood without damaging it;
  • then we prepare a hair dryer, preferably a special, powerful construction hair dryer, and remove it with a spatula, preheating the paint layer;
  • for removing paint, a more radical means - an iron or its construction equivalent - can be very helpful; this will not be able to help in difficult uneven places, but on smooth surfaces it is simply irreplaceable;

Mechanical sanding is required after removing paint and putty.

  • complete removal of paint requires then sanding the surface, preferably with a sanding machine;
  • as a finishing touch, prime the entire surface;
  • wait for it to dry completely and sand everything again;
  1. When, one way or another, the problem of the paint layer is solved, the surface is primed, and the primer is sanded, we proceed to painting. Here you will need to follow only one strict rule - painting must be carried out in at least 2 layers, and apply the first one with a thicker consistency; before applying the second layer, be sure to wait until the first one has completely dried.

Everything can be done with your own hands, especially in places hard to reach with a machine.

Helpful advice! There is another, very effective way to remove old paint - the so-called chemical one, using special solvents, which are also called “paint destroyers”.

But we do not recommend using it in enclosed spaces, especially on a vertically placed door. You will have to remove the door and do all the work on fresh air. By the way, it is also better to carry out all other work on the doors when they are removed and in a horizontal position.

Perhaps, before painting, a putty door will not look very aesthetically pleasing, but literally in an hour everything will change dramatically

Paint selection

All that remains is to decide main question How to paint interior doors. Let me tell you right away that the specialized electrically conductive paint zinga, more related to the cold galvanizing method, will not work here (find out also how and with what to paint plaster).

You should not use fire-retardant paints on metal. But even with this exception, the choice is not at all poorer.

Requirements

But first, about the selection requirements:

  • Firstly, the paint must be good from an aesthetic point of view, and its appearance must last for a long period of time after completion of the work.
  • Secondly, the paint must be impeccable from an environmental point of view; this is a requirement for all materials used in interiors.
  • Third, since the paint is for the door, it must be strong enough to withstand abrasion, because interior doors are in motion and in constant use 24 hours a day.
  • Fourth, and this is very important, the paint must be resistant to fire, God forbid that you ever have to check this quality, but we highly recommend checking this characteristic when purchasing.

Painting can be done with a roller, it’s faster, but you can’t do without brushes; in any case, apply at least two layers

Offers

We have several paint options on the market to choose from:

  • Alkyd. This is now the most common, due to its durability, a large number colors and prices. But the alkyd paint base emits a not entirely pleasant odor for 2-3 days, until it dries completely. On the environmentally friendly scale, this paint also cannot be given a maximum score of 100 points - it is no higher than 80. In other words, you should not paint the door of a nursery or a place where people prone to allergic reactions live with this paint.
  • Acrylic enamel. There is also a wide range of colors here, no smells for you. But it is noticeably more expensive and durability suffers, so often the paint layer is additionally coated with acrylic varnish.
  • Nitroenamel. The high cost of this proposal for many is more than compensated by the wonderful appearance surface on which this paint will lie. But such paint requires increased attention to personal safety during work; it is toxic.

If the area of work is small, then everything can be completed in just a few hours, do not forget that the putty must be allowed to dry completely

conclusions

Painting an interior door is an operation that you always strive to do yourself, and it’s not even about saving money. Sometimes you just want to do something with your own hands, when the cost of the work in terms of time costs is not so high (find out here how and with what materials to prepare drywall for painting).

Treat the work, as always, with great respect, carefully prepare the entire surface by removing the door from its hinges. Before you finally decide on a paint, test samples of it.

Be sure to watch the additional video in this article, it will help you navigate your choice more accurately.

If you decide to do budget renovation, and you need to replace the interior doors, the best option The interior doors will be MDF. The popularity of this material (translated from English - fibreboards medium density) have won thanks to their strength, low cost, as well as a wide range of surface structures: they can be with a “wood” texture, smooth, with felts, not textured, etc. Thanks to such a wide range, they will fit perfectly into any interior; you just need to choose and paint them correctly. In today's article we will tell you , how to paint an MDF door yourself.

For such interior design styles as minimalism, hi-tech, modern, smooth, plain MDF doors are perfect, and it is advisable to paint them in plain colors as well. In this case, the color can be almost any: from snow-white to dark brown. It all depends solely on the tone of the apartment’s design, as well as the wishes of the owners.

How to paint MDF interior doors

Painting MDF interior doors is practically no different from painting wooden doors, but has some features. If the interior MDF door that you need to paint has no panels or texture (i.e. it is completely smooth), it is best to paint it using a roller or spray. Embossed surfaces paint exclusively with brushes. If you do not have experience with spray painting, painting MDF doors in this way is strongly not recommended.

Before you start painting, you need to prepare your brushes: comb them out and soak them in water. You can also use a special varnish brush - it differs from ordinary brushes in that the bristles are more firmly attached. Note that it is recommended to pass any paint or primer intended for painting through filters with a diameter of 50-100 mKm. If you are going to paint glossy MDF doors, such filtering is simply necessary.

How to paint an MDF door

First you should paint the ends, then move on to painting the upper left corner - the doors are painted a quarter from there. After this, they begin to paint the same rectangular areas from left to right, gradually moving down.

Painting interior doors made of MDF White color considered universal: this color goes harmoniously with almost any option color range indoors.

If the doors are MDF paneled, Painting begins with the sides of the felt, after which they move on to painting the protruding parts and horizontal cross posts. The vertical parts of the canvas are painted last. The paint must be applied with vertical movements. Often painted in several colors, emphasizing the originality of the felt.

If the MDF door has wooden structure, it can be painted in such a way that it is practically indistinguishable from an expensive interior door made of solid wood. To do this, the varnish must be mixed with paint, and the resulting mixture must be coated twice on the surface. The result is a water-repellent surface with the desired “wooden” tint.

The same effect, albeit in a different way, can be achieved if the MDF doors are smooth. First you need to choose a paint color that is close to wood, and the paint should be 2 similar shades. The brighter tone is applied first, and until it has dried, it is necessary to make stains on it using a special brush that will resemble the patterns of a tree cut. It's not as difficult as it might seem: to get the hang of it, you just need to practice a little on an unnecessary piece of MDF. After the first layer has dried, you can apply darker paint.

Painting MDF doors , like any others, it should be done in warm weather - so that the room can be properly ventilated. The temperature inside the room should be between 19-25 0 C.
