Several master classes on creating poufs from improvised raw materials

  1. A pouf made of plastic bottles.

Everyone can make it, for this take:

  • plastic bottles, with a volume of 1.5-2 liters;
  • thick cardboard (packaging from equipment is suitable);
  • foam rubber;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • scissors;
  • thread, needle;
  • Scotch;
  • glue.

When the ottoman is ready, the hole can be sewn up tightly or a zipper can be sewn in its place.

Note: on each bottle, the cap must be screwed tight. Secure the container with each other with tape, place it on the first circle so that it completely occupies its space. Place the second circle on top, make sure that the elements are securely, evenly fixed.

In any case, the main thing is to patiently, slowly carry out each step.

Next, start finishing the product - cut out two round and one rectangular parts from foam rubber, be sure to leave a margin for seam allowances. Use strong stitches to join them together. Instead of foam rubber, you can use a synthetic winterizer, insulation or dense fabric folded in several layers.

Some of the available models will be plastic bottles or tires.

  1. DIY ottoman from an old bucket.

To create it, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • jute rope;
  • construction glue gun;
  • cardboard;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • microfiber;
  • stapler;
  • large button.

Remove the handle from the bucket, put it upside down and wind the rope tightly in a circle. In order for it to hold well, each stitch must be planted on glue.

Instead of foam rubber, you can use a synthetic winterizer, insulation or dense fabric folded in several layers.

When the whole bucket is wrapped in rope, proceed to making the pouf seat. Use thick cardboard to make a circle that matches the diameter of the bucket. Prepare a circle out of the fabric, but 10 centimeters larger. Connect the fabric and cardboard with the button in the center. Shape the microfiber into a tube, wind it around the button between the fabric and the cardboard, fixing it with a glue gun. Fill the cardboard base to the brim with straws. The top fabric with a stapler should be fixed to the back of the cardboard. Now glue the piece to the base and the work on the ottoman is complete.

First, you need to cut out two equal round parts (or squares if you want to get a square ottoman) of a suitable size - this will be the top and bottom of the ottoman.

  1. A tire pouf is a great idea for a summer cottage or a living room.

Prepare the following materials and tools:

  • old tire;
  • twine (at least 20 meters long);
  • self-tapping screws;
  • glue gun;
  • plywood sheet 3-5 millimeters thick;
  • jigsaw;
  • electric drill.

First, you should measure the inner diameter of the tire until it thickens, divide this value in half and add one and a half centimeters to the result - you got the radius of the desired circle.

You can also add a strap, thanks to which it becomes possible to easily move the product.

Draw it on a piece of plywood, cut it out with a jigsaw. You should make two circles - on the seat and the bottom of the ottoman. Then drill holes in the tire and plywood, fasten the parts together with self-tapping screws.

Now you can glue the rope to the tire. To give the piece an unusual pattern, start at the center of the seat, laying the twine with a snail.

The top fabric with a stapler should be fixed to the back of the cardboard.

Use transparent, fast drying, high strength adhesive.

When the top of the pouf is completely pasted over - proceed to the sides of the tire. To make the string easier to attach, turn the product upside down. After the first round, let the glue dry well to avoid the rope slipping.

Make a case for an ottoman according to the above scheme.

Note: do not rush, apply a lot of glue, process the future pouf circle by circle. It is better if you work together - one will make sure that the rope falls without gaps, and the other will continue to glue. Working on such a pouf on your own, you can easily allow the formation of gaps, possibly displacement of the twine from the surface of the tire.

When the glue dries well, cover the finished pouf with clear varnish.

You can decorate the product with legs or wheels.

For decoration, attach buttons, rhinestones or a border to the seams.

  1. How to make an ottoman quickly without patterns.

For work, prepare:

  • the cloth;
  • stuffing material;
  • scissors;
  • needle, thread;
  • centimeter tape.

Prepare two identical round elements from the fabric, the parameters of which are equal to the top and bottom of the product. Set aside a few extra centimeters for the seams.

To begin with, you should measure the inner diameter of the tire until it thickens.

Then cut out two equal rectangles - their width is the height of the ottoman, the length is half the circumference of the upper and lower zones.

Seams can be decorated with ribbons, borders.

Place seams on the resulting rectangular elements from one edge so that they form a long ribbon.

Then you need to sweep the first circle to it, sew along the seam. Then also do with the next circle. Seams can be decorated with ribbons, borders.

You should not rush, apply a lot of glue, process the future pouf circle by circle.

So, without wasting time on patterns, you can make a cover for a pouf. The filler can be a variety of materials. To avoid conspicuous stuffing opening, place it at the bottom of the product. When the ottoman is ready, the hole can be sewn up tightly or a zipper can be sewn in its place.

Following this description, you can build an ottoman-cube.

Following this description, you can build an ottoman-cube. The only difference is that all parts should be made square, and there are four of them in the side parts. In order for the product to keep its shape better, use dense fabrics, and choose a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber as a filler.

VIDEO: How to make a round ottoman with your own hands

More than a decade ago, ottomans were very popular. Today, these interior elements are back in fashion. On the market, this multifunctional product is presented in a large assortment. But, if you wish, the ottoman can be made by hand. To do this, you just need to choose the type of construction and prepare the necessary materials and tools. So, how to make an ottoman with your own hands? What is needed for this?

Chipboard ottomans are very popular. Such structures can withstand heavy loads and can be used as a full-fledged stool. They can also have various design features. This could be a hinged lid design or other options. In any case, for the construction of a simple ottoman made of chipboard you will need:

  • Chipboard sheet. Its size should be 240x175x1.6 cm. You can also use plywood. Its thickness should not be less than 1.3 cm. This will be enough for the ottoman to be used by adults.
  • A bar with a section of 4x4 cm and a length of 150 cm.
  • If desired, the product can be made on castors. In this case, you will need 4 rollers.
  • If the ottoman will be made with a hinged lid, then you will need 2 more hinges.
  • Foam rubber or synthetic winterizer is used as a filler.
  • Tapestry or other thick fabric is suitable for upholstery.

As for the tools, for making an ottoman with your own hands you will need:

  • a hacksaw with fine teeth or a jigsaw, which will allow you to cut high-quality chipboard or plywood;
  • hammer;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdrivers or screwdriver;
  • construction stapler or furniture studs with wide caps;
  • joiner's glue.

To simplify and speed up the process, you can use a box with legs. It is made from bars that are connected with self-tapping screws. But what could be better than a do-it-yourself square ottoman on wheels with a hinged lid. Thus, the structure will be used not only for seating, but also for storing various little things or toys. A step-by-step master class will show how easy it is to organize the production of such furniture at home.

Manufacturing

So, an ottoman in your home with your own hands is performed step by step, with the exact observance of each paragraph. So, we make an ottoman:

  1. First of all, markings are applied to the chipboard sheet. For the construction of the frame, you will need 5 identical squares, 40x40 cm in size. The result will be 4 walls and the bottom of the box. It is worth remembering here that a rather thick material is used for the manufacture of the structure, which will ensure its resistance to various loads.

  1. As for the lid, it can be round, square or oval. A simplified version involves the manufacture of a square lid. In size, it will be slightly larger than the box. So, a workpiece measuring 43x43 cm will be enough. As a result of all the work, a pouf will be obtained, the height of which will be 53 cm. All dimensions are taken into account here, starting with the height of the box and ending with the thickness of the sheathing.

  1. When the markings are applied, you can safely start cutting the material. Do not worry if this process results in somewhat uneven workpieces. As a result, all defects will be hidden under the skin. It is also worth cutting the bar into 4 equal parts. As a result, the length of one segment will be 40 cm.
  2. Next, you need to make a box, for which ready-made blanks are used. A wooden cube is formed from plywood, in the corners of which bars are installed. They are initially fixed with glue. When it dries, the plywood is screwed to the bars with self-tapping screws. This will give the structure rigidity and reliability. The hats go deep into the plywood, which will further prevent damage to the upholstery material. Also, metal corners are widely used to strengthen the structure. The bottom of the box is attached using the same technology.
  3. At the next stage, the lid for the pouf is made. On the inside of the workpiece, four bars are attached around the perimeter. This will prevent the lid from dislodging while seated. Before fixing the bars, you need to make sure that the lid closes easily

  1. At the final stage, the wheels are attached to the structure. For greater reliability, they should be fixed in the corners of the box, directly into the bars.

Thus, a do-it-yourself pouf according to the given master class can be considered ready. It remains only to test its strength and carry out the cladding. At this stage, it will still be possible to eliminate the shortcomings.

Upholstery

First of all, you need to cut out a piece of foam rubber. It must match the dimensions of the cover. It is fixed to it with wood glue. The next step is to cut the fabric for the seat upholstery. In size, it is made slightly larger so that it is possible to completely cover the seat and wrap the material for fastening a little. Fix the fabric with furniture nails or a construction stapler.

When the lid is ready, you can start upholstering the sides of the pouf. To do this, you need to take a fabric and cut a piece out of it, the length of which will be the size of the box. Since the sides are 40 cm high, the length of the workpiece should be 160 cm. In this case, you need to make a margin of several centimeters, which will allow you to bend the material for fastening. After that, you can fix the upholstery fabric to the product.

A few ideas for creating ottomans

At home, a pouf can be made with your own hands from scrap materials. So, many are wondering how to make a round ottoman with your own hands. It is very easy to make such furniture. Plastic bottles are used as a base, which are connected with ordinary tape.

Round-shaped blanks are attached above and below. Thick cardboard or plywood is used as the material. Fastening is carried out with glue or self-tapping screws. At the final stage, it remains only to wrap the structure with foam rubber and sheathe it with fabric. In this case, you need to form the appropriate shape of the pouf. Also, for the manufacture of such furniture, you can use 20-liter plastic bottles.

A pouf bench with a back would also be a good option. It can consist of several poufs or a one-piece construction. Often, ready-made stools are used for the manufacture of such furniture, which will somewhat simplify the process. If desired, a pouf bench can be made of wood yourself. In it, you can equip a folding side, which will open access to the interior space. It can be used to store shoes and other small items.

In fact, there are quite a few options for making such furniture in the hallway. As a material for the frame, materials at hand are used, such as a cardboard barrel, pipe pieces and even plastic boxes. If you wish, you can make an ottoman without a frame. As a filler, scraps of foam rubber and fabrics, foam rubber granules and other fillers are used.

The ottoman is a nice and functional element of the interior. It perfectly complements the furniture composition, creates a stylish space and brings a special comfort to the room. The ottoman easily copes with a variety of roles that he has to play. It can act as a chair or bench, footrest, storage space. If you want to make the room cute and cozy, the ottoman is the right item that will help you cope with this task with ease. And if your budget does not provide for such expenses, but you really want to get a comfortable seat, build an ottoman with your own hands using simple improvised means.

Types of poufs

Poufs make the interior noble, graceful and comfortable. There are many varieties of this item. The main representatives of this furniture group are square or round products with a rigid frame, bean bags, banquettes, structures with storage space, hollow from the inside, with a drawer.

There are three main classifications of ottomans. They can be divided into groups, focusing on the material of manufacture, design features, functionality.

By design, ottomans can be:

  • with an open frame - they look like a mini-bench;
  • with a closed frame;
  • inflatable;
  • frameless.

Poufs with an open frame can be attributed to budget options. They resemble miniature chairs or stools. The base is made of metal or wood. A soft seat is installed on top.

Closed poufs are upholstered with fabric or leather on all sides. They can be equipped with small legs with a height of 5-7 cm. As an alternative to the legs, wheels are often used, which will allow you to easily move the product from one end of the room to the other, without much effort, as well as to neighboring rooms. Mobility is the most important and significant characteristic of ottomans.

Particularly popular are products in which the frame is completely absent. These are the so-called puffs - bags. They can be triangular, round, rectangular or pear-shaped. Polystyrene foam balls are used as a filling. Thanks to them, the chair is able to take the shape of the body of a person sitting in it. This allows you to really relax and unwind.

For the manufacture of inflatable poufs, dense fabric and a camera are used. The inflatable element is installed inside the cover, which, if necessary, can be quickly removed and washed.

Another classification of poufs allows them to be divided into groups according to the degree of rigidity. It depends on what kind of filler is used in them.

The ottoman remains soft if filled with padding polyester, holofiber, polyurethane foam. The top of the product is often covered with leather - both natural and artificial. These ottomans look stylish and formal. Also, for upholstery, various types of dense fabrics are used, which make ottomans more homey.

Rigid options are made of wood of various species or rattan. Products are varnished or painted. Such poufs can successfully replace a coffee table. These are not the most convenient designs, but due to their stylish appearance they can perfectly decorate the interior.

The next classification is by the functionality of ottomans. They can act as seats, additional elements of upholstered furniture, transformers.

The ottoman seat has a height of approximately 35-40 cm. Most often they are longer than standard chairs and resemble a bench. Their second name is pouf-bench. For rooms decorated in a modern style, poufs with a non-standard shape are perfect.

A pouf - an addition, as a rule, is bought together with a sofa, bed or armchairs and is designed in the same style and color scheme with the rest of the furniture.

The transforming ottoman can easily be transformed into an armchair, a folding bed, five stools.

Workshops for making poufs from different materials

Finding a ready-made pouf in a store is as easy as shelling pears. But this option is not always suitable due to a limited budget or choice of thematic design. Then it is easier to make this piece of furniture with your own hands.

Pouf made of old frame furniture

If you are on a limited budget, but you have an old cabinet that is high time to be thrown away, the base for the pouf can be made from its parts.

Tools and materials

To create an ottoman, prepare:

  • details of old furniture;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • construction stapler with staples;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • roulette;
  • screwdriver;
  • scissors.

  1. We cut parts for the pouf frame.
  2. We carry out the assembly of the frame using self-tapping screws.
  3. We wrap the product with padding polyester and fix it with a stapler.
  4. We stretch the fabric, wrapping the edges 1 cm inward, and attach it to the frame.
  5. We mount the legs.

The product can be decorated with a carriage tie, gold cords, fringes - this is the best option for classic and avant-garde styles. In minimalism, surfaces are best left smooth and laconic. Any decor in this case will be superfluous.

Take your time to throw away the old tire - it has every chance of getting a second life. The wheel can be turned into a wonderful and original pouf.

Tools and materials

To get the job done, you need to stock up on:

  • tire;
  • a sheet of plywood;
  • sisal cord;
  • varnish;
  • tape measure;
  • drill;
  • a screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • jigsaw;
  • scissors;
  • glue gun;
  • glue sticks;
  • brush.

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the tire - wash it thoroughly and dry it. Use a brush to remove dried dirt on the tread.
  2. We put the tire on a sheet of plywood, outline it with a pencil and cut out the part with a jigsaw. This blank will serve as a seat. We make the base using the first circle as a template.

Step back a little into the tire as you draw the circle. Thanks to this, a protrusion is formed, which will be easier to glue with a cord.

  1. We attach the plywood disc to the tire. We attach the seat, press it down and drill several holes through the wood and rubber with a drill. Make sure that the part does not move, so it will be easier to join the holes made. Secure the workpiece by placing a heavy object on it. Then screw the screws into the previously formed holes. We fix the second part on the tire from the back in the same way.

Design, decor and decoration of the finished product

We decorate the pouf with a sisal cord. It will mask unsightly rubber and plywood, and give the product a finished and attractive look.

We start work from the center of the plywood disc. We heat the thermo-gun until the rod melts. We squeeze out the composition in small doses - one portion for 2-3 turns. As the size of the coils increases, the consumption of glue will increase.

Do not squeeze out a lot of glue at once - it thickens very quickly.

After gluing the seat, we continue to glue the cord over the surface of the tire. The coils should be laid as tightly as possible, without leaving gaps with rubber peeking through them. Don't forget to line the end of the bottom plywood disc with string. At this point, the work can be completed - there is no need to decorate the base. Cut off the cord and fix its end well. If you want the pouf to become mobile or simply rise above the floor, attach legs or structures equipped with casters to it.

Finally, cover the entire glued surface of the ottoman with two coats of varnish. This will ensure the durability of the product and allow it to be used even outdoors.

Alternatively, you can propose to paint the tire in a bright color, to make the seat soft, using synthetic winterizer or foam rubber as a lining. If you wish, you can connect two tires at an angle of 90 degrees - you get an ottoman with a back. The winding can be replaced with a removable cover for easier maintenance. To make it, you can take a whole piece of fabric, or you can sew a product from rags or knit from yarn. Pockets can be attached to the sides for storing small items.

The imagination of designers is limitless. They even successfully use materials such as empty plastic bottles. We will tell you how to make an excellent ottoman out of them for a summer cottage or a children's room.

Tools and materials

To make products from plastic bottles you will need:

  • 16 bottles of 1.5 liters;
  • raincoat or any other fabric for making a case with a color that is in harmony with the general style of the room;
  • lightning;
  • foam rubber for lining;
  • double sided tape;
  • sewing needle;
  • threads;
  • stationery knife;
  • cardboard.

  1. We wrap the bottle with tape. It will become the center of the structure.
  2. We glue another 3-4 bottles to the first container. Wrap the tape again.
  3. We glue the resulting structure with bottles in a circle. Align the edges by applying to a hard surface.
  4. Cut out two discs from cardboard. We decorate the top and bottom of the product with them. If possible, the seat and base are best made of plywood.
  5. We wrap the future pouf with foam rubber and sew the joints of the material.
  6. We take measurements from the received pouf. We transfer the obtained data to the fabric.
  7. We cut out the details of the future cover from the raincoat fabric and sew them. We sew a snake on the side. Try to fit the product exactly to the size of the pouf, otherwise the final result is unlikely to please you.

Design, decor and decoration of the finished product

The next step is to decorate the item.

There are many options for decorating a bottle pouf. You can sew ruffles, satin ribbons or braid in a circle, make embroidery or applique, sew on pockets. Products covered with denim, matting, artificial fur look great.

Knitted or crocheted pouf

The pouf cover can be knitted. Such a product looks incredibly attractive in the interior, makes it expressive and cozy. It will perfectly fit into the decor of any room in the house - hall, bedroom, nursery, hallway.

Tools and materials

To make a knitted pouf, you will need:

  • 600-700 grams of thick yarn - ribbon yarn, products from which keep their shape well, would be an excellent choice;
  • knitting needles with a thickness of 10 to 15 cm or a hook of similar dimensions;
  • foam rubber or expanded polystyrene balls.

Step-by-step master class

  • We knit a garter or hosiery fabric. After that, we fold it and sew it in width. We fill the resulting shape with foam rubber and sew the edges.
  • If you are crocheting a pouf, start from the center. We knit several air loops and connect them in a ring. We continue knitting in a circle with columns with or without a crochet, not forgetting to make increments. To complete the side part, we stop adding loops. While knitting the base of the loop, we begin to subtract it.

Design, decor and decoration of the finished product

The knitted product can be decorated with knitted flowers, leaves, buttons, beads, ribbons, felt or tulle. If an interesting pattern was used during knitting or an image was knitted, you can refuse additional decor.

Round pouf made of wood frame

If you want the product to serve you for many years, we recommend choosing a wooden frame as its base.

Tools and materials

To get the job done, you need to stock up on:

  • a wooden coil from the cable;
  • 8 blocks of wood with dimensions of 2.5x5x15 cm;
  • glue for wood;
  • glue spray;
  • screws;
  • 1.5 m of batting;
  • foam rubber, the thickness of which is 1 cm more than that of wood - about 9-15 cm.
  • a piece of fabric for wrapping wood;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • construction stapler and furniture staples;
  • with an electric drill;
  • scissors;
  • pliers;
  • flat-blade screwdriver;
  • legs.

  1. We make a pattern. We transfer the dimensions of the coil to the tracing paper, not forgetting to add 1 cm per seam.
  2. We connect the circles of the coil using wooden blocks.
  3. We cover the structure with batting and padding polyester. Tapes of these materials are attached to the outer edges of the top and bottom discs.
  4. Cut out a circle of foam rubber, connect it to the upper circle with glue.
  5. We cut out the details of the cover using a template, making an increase in the height of the coil of 3 cm, around the circumference - 12 cm.
  6. Sew the fabric, turn it inside out and stretch the seams from the outside.
  7. We put the cover on the ottoman and fix it from below with a stapler.
  8. We fasten the legs at the same distance relative to each other, having previously made a marking and drilling holes for fixing the plates.

Design, decor and decoration of the finished product

The cover can be decorated with ruffles, shreds, pasted over the contours with a thick decorative cord, beads. The choice of decor depends on the style of the room and the finish of the rest of the furniture.

Pouf with drawer and pouf-bench for the hallway

A pouf with a storage box or made in the form of a banquet is one of the most demanded pieces of furniture in the hallway. It's not just a seat that makes putting on your shoes more comfortable, but also a great place to store a variety of essential items. Such a pouf is useful in any room of the house - in the kitchen and in the nursery - for seating guests, in the living room - for reading under the window, in the bedroom - as a bedside banquet.

Today's furniture market offers a huge variety of these products with different design and functionality. There are poufs with shelves, drawers, made in the form of a chest. But what if the finished product is not yet affordable, or you simply haven't found an accessory that matches your interior? In this case, we suggest you make a pouf-stool with your own hands.

Tools and materials

You will need:

  • materials for the manufacture of the frame - wooden blocks, as well as plywood, chipboard or furniture board;
  • foam rubber;
  • upholstery fabric - velvet, velor, jeans, thick knitwear or just thick cotton;
  • screwdriver or drill;
  • drill for wood or metal with a diameter of 3 mm;
  • screws 15 and 50 mm;
  • piano-type hinge;
  • roulette;
  • stapler;
  • staples with a size of 15-25 mm;
  • hacksaw;
  • hammer;
  • stationery knife;
  • paint brush;
  • stain or paint.

You will need a large table or workbench to cut the material.

  1. We cut out the details of the frame according to the scheme.
  2. We assemble the frame.
  3. We paint the frame from the inside.
  4. We collect the stand and paint it outside.
  5. We mount the cover on the frame. It must fit exactly to the perimeter of the box. The piano hinge should be 5 cm shorter than the lid itself.
  6. We upholster it with foam rubber and cover it with fabric. Tuck the fabric at the edges by 1 cm and start it behind the opposite edges of the parts.
  7. We attach the stand.

Design, decor and decoration of the finished product

It's time to show your design skills, choosing not only the color and type of material for the upholstery, but also the decorative design of the future banquet. It can be buttons or carriage studs; the edging of the seat can be done with braid or the main fabric, laid in small folds.

Pouf transformer 5 in 1 with a metal frame

The product is a laconic cube with a secret. The fact is that each of its facets is the lid of one of five stools.

Design advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of this model is its compactness. The ottoman takes up little space, so it is easy to store and transport, and if necessary, you can easily seat the whole family on its components.

Among the design flaws, a rather high cost can be distinguished. But if you make a similar element of the interior yourself, it will cost much less.

Required materials and tools

For the manufacture of the structure you will need;

  • Chipboard, plywood or MDF;
  • jigsaw - manual or electric;
  • legs for stools;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • ruler;
  • upholstery material - fabric or dermantin;
  • synthetic winterizer.

Stages of creating a structure

  1. We cut the covers of future stools.
  2. We cover the surfaces with padding polyester.
  3. Put the upholstery on top and fix it on the back of the cover.
  4. We fasten the legs.
  5. We fold a cube from the stools.

Design and decor

This design is ideal for modern interiors with their technical focus. It does not need unnecessary decoration, since it is an interesting solution in itself.

How to sew a pouf or a beanbag chair with your own hands

Frameless poufs are in great demand because they have many advantages. They are spectacular, lightweight, mobile, take up a minimum of space and are able to adapt to the shape of the body, thanks to which the load is evenly distributed. It is quite possible to make a beanbag chair yourself. To do this, you only need to download the drawing, cut out the parts, sew the edges and fill the product with polyurethane ball filler.

What fabric to choose for frameless furniture

The beanbag consists of two covers. The inner must be formed from breathable, durable materials. For the exterior, you need to choose an attractive, and at the same time high-strength, easy-to-clean fabric, resistant to abrasion. The best choice is the material "Oxford", which is used for making tents. It has a special impregnation that makes it waterproof. Thanks to this, poufs made of this fabric can be used outdoors. The canvas is presented in a wide range of colors, so you can choose the appropriate option for any interior.

Another option for the material for the outer cover is eco-leather. It is also waterproof and easy to maintain.

If the ottoman will be used only at home, you can use other dense fabrics - corduroy or tapestry. However, for washing, such a cover will need to be removed, therefore, a zipper will need to be installed.

Making a homemade ottoman is a snap. Choose the model you like and implement your idea.

How to make an ottoman with your own hands without throwing money away? Of course, you can buy it in a furniture store, but looking at the cost of a simple chipboard product, there is a desire to do crafts at home. If we consider furniture sets in general, then most of them belong to rather complex structures.

Experienced craftsmen can do something from this list with their own hands, and only an ottoman is made without special skills and knowledge from improvised means. A practical thing will turn out when a durable and high-quality upholstery fabric is chosen that can be wiped, cleaned, washed.

Such materials include leather or upholstery fabrics sold in specialized stores. It remains only to look at the step-by-step instructions for the manufacture of ottomans of various shapes.

So:

  • An ottoman for seating several people is comparable in height to an armchair and looks more like a soft bench... For the home, such a model is inconvenient, and is not needed, but in the fitting and waiting areas it is very relevant.
  • An ottoman in addition to something with a specific height... From the definition itself, it becomes clear that it does not act as an independent product, but serves as an application. Models barely raised above the floor are not intended for sitting on them, but are used as footrests for adults. Children love these things in miniature and are happy to use them in their games.
  • Complementing chairs, sofas, beds, moving under the table or being a component in a non-standard combination (a beach cabin with a pouf), ottomans firmly occupy a niche in furniture showrooms. We can say more, there is a fashion for designer items that make the interior fashionable, complementing it.
  • The video in this article introduces poufs with advanced features. Watching it, you recall the plot of the film, when “with a slight movement of the hand, the trousers turn into shorts”, and here the ottoman is transformed into a full-fledged chair with a table, a bed with a lamp stand and other necessary items, while taking up a minimum of space.

Before you start making an ottoman with your own hands, you need to have an idea of this seemingly unpretentious furniture family.

So, poufs are classified according to materials, design, functions and shapes:

  1. Textiles, leather are used on soft products... It is pleasant to throw your legs on the ottoman knitted with your own hands, and when the dimensions allow, then fall apart on it.
  2. Rigid ottoman structures are made of rattan, wood, often varnished, bark of cork trees... Hard ottomans, made by hand, are not very suitable for long-term sitting, but they bring liveliness and intrigue to the interior.

Attention: The ottoman unambiguously refers to the necessary thing, and its need is felt when entering the house, more precisely, into the hallway.

  1. How to make, sew, knit and which design of an ottoman to choose is not an easy task. Ottomans can be with exposed frames of steel tubes or wood.
  2. The ottoman can have a closed frame, and the legs are hidden under the ruffles of the decorative skirt. Such products are popular with the British and Americans.
  3. Ottoman with barely visible legs when copying a chair without armrests and backrests.
  4. DIY ottoman with a back- not only a comfortable chair for members of the whole family, regardless of body weight, but also an excellent support for a sore back.
  5. What could be simpler than an inflatable ottoman consisting of a textile cover with a zipper and an inflatable chamber inside it? Ottomans differ not only in materials, designs, but also in shapes.
  6. DIY square ottoman, round, triangular, combined from different geometric shapes, can be made from improvised means.

Handy tools in the house

How to make an ottoman yourself if you don't have the skills and desire to cut, cut, twist? Craftsmen offer a lot of ideas and suggestions brought to life. The work of making a pretty ottoman is not difficult, but quite exciting, and a hand-made thing radiates special warmth and has an aura of home comfort.

Soft ottomans

The simplest scheme for making a soft ottoman with your own hands is as follows:

  • Two circles with a diameter equal to the diameter of the upper and lower parts of the product are cut out of the fabric.

Tip: When cutting out parts, do not forget to leave allowances on the seams.

  • Two rectangular pieces of the same size are cut:
  1. width by height of the pouf;
  2. length equal to half the circumference of the top and bottom of the pouf.
  • Rectangular parts are sewn together on one side across the width to obtain a long tape.
  • One of the circles is swept to it and cut off at the seam.
  • The same is done with the second circle.

Tip: If the seam is not too straight or neat, it is sheathed with a decorative border.

  • The resulting pouf cover is stuffed with any suitable material.
  • The zipper is sewn into the unstitched edges that remain in the rectangular tape.

The photo shows a diagram of making a pouf in the simplest way.

Similarly, you can make a cube-shaped ottoman. The difference is in the manufacture of parts that must be square, and for the manufacture of the sides, four parts will need to be made of fabric, not two.

Then:

  • Details are clasped together.
  • To more clearly define the edges of the cube, you can use a canvas with a different contrasting color.
  • Additional strength and elasticity will be given by a denser fabric.
  • Stuffing such a pouf can be done with padding polyester and foam rubber. These materials hold their shape perfectly and do not deform.
  • The hole for stuffing the material is made at the bottom of the pouf so that it is not visible.
  • If desired, it can be stitched up tightly after stuffing the pouf, or a zipper can be sewn in, so that the material can be replaced if necessary.

Sewing a ottoman

  • The video in this article demonstrates the order of sewing an ottoman of 8 elements. To do this, a sheet of paper is folded in four, a template is drawn and cut out on it according to the diagram below.
  • The expanded template is fixed on the fabric and the cutting of 8 pieces of blanks begins.

Attention: It is not necessary to purchase new fabric for a pattern, you can use old deposits of knitted clothes, old sweaters.

  • The photo below shows that the sharp end of each hexagon is bent inward by about 5-6 cm and sewn on a typewriter, which allows you to get an octagonal hole for stuffing the finished product after assembling all the elements.
  • The workpieces are stitched in pairs to each other with an indent from the edge by about 1 cm. The pairs are folded with the front side so that the seams are on the wrong side, in the sewn form there are 4 segments from 2 workpieces.
  • In a similar way, they are sewn in 2 sections and you get 2 halves of the future ottoman.
  • The halves are connected to each other on a typewriter, the cover is turned on the front side.
  • The ottoman is filled with prepared filler (holofiber, foam rubber, padding polyester), and the hole is closed with a lid of the appropriate size. The edges of the cover should already be finished and it is hand sewn neatly onto the top of the stuffing hole.
  • The instruction for beginners recommends to sew an ottoman with literally three seams. For this, 2 circles are cut out, the diameter of which is about 50 cm, or 2 squares, if you like clear lines more. Geometric shapes will serve as the top or bottom of the future product.
  • From the same material or from another, a strip is cut out with a size corresponding to the circumference or perimeter of the square, the width of the strip depends on the height of the ottoman. The height of the ottoman, in turn, is selected depending on the function that will be performed by the product, whether it is a footrest, a seat in the hallway, a toy for young children or a structure in the living room.

Attention: Cutting the strips for the side of the ottoman is made taking into account the seam allowances.

  • The work is carried out in such a way that the seams are on the wrong side, the strip is sewn first of all to the bottom of the product and only then to the top.
  • After covering all the seams, the ottoman unfolds on the front side and stuffed.
  • According to the same patterns that are presented above, for the first option and for the second, covers for the ottoman with a zipper are cut out. This will allow in the future to wash the cover or clean it without unnecessary problems and time-consuming, and not solve the problem of how to sheathe an ottoman with a cloth, if it is already made of cloth.

Reliable base of plastic bottles

  • There are unlimited quantities of plastic bottles in every home. Take at least bottles of beer and water with a capacity of 1.5 - 2 liters, their color in the finished product does not matter, and they will help to unload debris in the yard and at home.
  1. To make a good, stable ottoman, you will need at least 16 bottles with a capacity of 1.5 liters or 9 pieces of 2 liters.
  2. Cardboard packaging from household appliances also awaits its turn and is not thrown away for years, and what if the refrigerator breaks down, how to take it for repairs? The video in this article will show how cardboard is used in the manufacture of an ottoman from plastic bottles.
  1. You need to stock up on tape, foam rubber and upholstery.
  1. Hot glue gun, zip for case.

Attention: You can make an even larger circle, square or rectangle out of round bottles, that is, the shape of the product is chosen according to your preferences.

  • For convenience in work, if a very large ottoman is planned, the bottles are connected into separate sectors and sections with tape, and then the formation of a general structure begins.
  1. If the future product is planned to be round, then the ottoman should be made starting from the middle.
  2. To do this, a bottle is taken and, with movements along the radius, new elements are attached to it, which are carefully fixed with tape to each other.
  3. After completing the circle, a base is cut out of thick cardboard. It should be slightly larger in size than the bottle design.
  1. Fastening of cardboard is also done with adhesive tape in several layers. Once again, dwell on the fact that the grounds must be prepared 2, there is no need, and so everything is clear.
  2. It's the turn of the soft upholstery, for which two parts for the top and bottom are cut out of a dense foam rubber sheet, which are glued in place.
  3. From the rest of the foam, a rectangle is cut out according to the size of the circumference of the side part, which is wrapped around the pouf.
  4. There remains the final stage of sewing a cover made of upholstery fabric, preferably with a zipper. This operation will not only allow you to easily remove the cover for washing, but also make several options and from time to time update the appearance of your product.

Ottoman from a grandmother's rarity

How to make an ottoman out of a stool so that your grandmother's rarity will serve for more than one year?

Indeed, a stool made of solid wood, painted with oil paint, soundly knocked together at one time, can please the owners for many years, but the appearance does not correspond to the modern environment. Alteration of an old stool into a stylish ottoman will help to balance the interior.

  • The design of the stool is pre-strengthened with self-tapping screws.
  • The legs are slightly shortened - do not forget to check the level so that the ottoman does not wobble afterwards.
  • The frame of the future ottoman is being assembled, for which 4 sheets of plywood are used. They are attached with self-tapping screws to the legs of the stool.
  • The fifth sheet of plywood is screwed on from the bottom and serves as the bottom of the future craft.
  • The foam rubber for the seat is cut out with an allowance of 5 cm.

Attention: The upper part of the ottoman is coated with glue, then the foam rubber will not get lost over time into an untidy ball.

  • The upholstery fabric on the seat is attached together with the foam rubber using staple staples.
  • The foam rubber can be attached from the sides with slats, which help to give the ottoman a round shape and make it more beautiful.
  • The rest of the structure is made out with the fabric, fixed with staples.
  • The wheels are screwed on or, as in the photo above, the pretty legs of the updated stool peep out from under the flirty upholstery.
  • The task of how to make an ottoman out of a stool was solved in a short time.

For those who like to knock

The rich Russian language raises many associations and questions. How to knock, where to knock, when to knock? For those who like to knock on a nail with a hammer, it is proposed to make an ottoman with your own hands from boards and chipboard.

  • Pre-prepared rectangular pieces 40x30 cm from chipboard in the amount of 4 pieces.
  • A circle with a diameter of 30 cm and 4 pieces of wood.
  • Wood glue.
  • Furniture casters with special fasteners.
  • Metal corners, self-tapping screws.
  • Foam rubber and upholstery fabric.

As you can see, the set of necessary materials does not differ much from each other when we make an ottoman with our own hands, even in different ways:

  1. A box is assembled from rectangles. Metal corners, self-tapping screws are used, all corners of the structure are leveled, they must be straight.
  2. On the lower part, the bars are fixed with glue, on which the wheels will be located in the future.
  3. The base is attached to the top in an individually selected shape.
  4. The finished frame is upholstered according to the same type of technology using foam rubber, fabric and a zipper on the cover.

For knitting and filling lovers

How to make a frameless ottoman with your own hands and therefore soft. Needlewomen who own a crochet hook will be able to knit a soft ottoman much faster, but not everyone may like their appearance.

Lovers of working with knitting needles present interesting models of ottomans, connected specifically to them:

  • For work, you will need the thickest knitting needles available in stores.
  • A fairly thick wool is suitable for needles with a diameter of 9 mm.
  • The ordinary threads offered in shops are too thin. The price for them is not high, but due to the fact that you will have to make thicker ones from them, weaving them together, you will have to purchase a sufficiently large amount, which will add the cost of the product.
  • You can, of course, cut, dissolve, twist unnecessary jerseys, which takes a lot of time, and it is quite problematic to find at home the right amount of plain jersey clothes that have become unusable.
  • It seems that the solution to the problem of how to make an ottoman with your own hands has reached a dead end, but the clothes lines made of cotton caught my eye.

Attention: Linen synthetic ropes are not suitable for this job, and cotton ropes are problematic to buy in small towns.

  • For a soft ottoman of sufficient size, you will need 20-30 of these ropes, which are tied into a long rectangle.
  • The side is fastened with a rope to obtain a spacious, wide skirt.
  • The bottom is pulled together with a rope of the same color and a bag is obtained, which must be stuffed with something. There are 2 options here - to use the junk, neatly folded on the shelves in the closet, or go to the store and purchase foam rubber or holofiber.
  • From unnecessary old stuff, the ottoman turns out to be heavy and not as round and lush as from store materials, but it frees up space in the closet for new clothes.
  • The top of the ottoman is decorated with the same rope and you can try your product.

Old bucket ottoman

Here's another interesting solution we'll need: an old plastic bucket, thick jute rope, hot glue gun, stapler, scissors, cabinet handle, Velcro tape, upholstery cloth, and some new microfiber rags. You will also need cardboard, but it will be better if you replace it with thin plywood.

  • The first step is to wash the bucket and remove the metal handle.
  • Next, use hot glue to glue the outside of the bucket with a string, starting from the bottom.
  • Cut the end of the rope and hide it carefully.
  • Place the bucket upside down on cardboard and circle it. Lay out the upholstery fabric according to the outlined template and cut off a round blank with a release of 5 centimeters.
  • We make a hole in the center of the cardboard and fabric. We pass the bolt from the furniture handle through them and screw the knob.
  • Next, we roll the fiber into tubes and radially wrap the bolt between the cardboard and paper, creating a kind of roll. To prevent the fiber from unwinding, we fix it securely with glue.
  • Then the fabric is stretched and secured from the back with a stapler.
  • Cover the back of the seat with another piece of cloth to cover up any traces of cardboard.
  • Cut the Velcro into four equal pieces and glue them crosswise to the bottom of the bucket and the base of the saddle - with the bristles to the bucket and the fluffy part to the seat. Connect the two parts. Hooray! The ottoman is ready!

The result is such a useful piece of work that you can sit on with comfort.

Various options provide an opportunity to solve the problem of how to make an ottoman yourself from scrap materials that are abundant in any home. The only thing else I wanted to focus on was the floor in the room.

Laminate is quite sensitive to mechanical stress, so it is better to make an ottoman without wheels and legs, that is, with a solid bottom. On a soft surface, carpet, carpet ottomans on rollers are appropriate, but there are no restrictions for tiled covering, unless forged legs can be an exception.

Chipboard ottoman

In one toast, the hero of the "Caucasian Captive" expressed the very essence of being, so that "our desires coincide with our capabilities." There is free time and a desire to make an ottoman with your own hands from chipboard - you need to prepare opportunities.

  • Tools and necessary materials are stocked in advance.
  • A good ottoman cannot be made without a solid base from a chipboard sheet. The optimal size of the structure is within 400x400x500 mm.
  • It is possible to make a wooden ottoman using a simplified technology, making a frame in the form of a mailbox from a bar and screwing it on with side cuts, but since the ottoman is made for yourself, you can try.

Work with pleasure

In a bad mood, you should not take on work: something will fall on your foot or you will not hit a nail with a hammer.

  • It is marked out, cut out from a chipboard sheet of 5 squares 400x400 mm for the manufacture of the walls of the structure and the bottom.

Attention: The bottom of the ottoman should not be made of plywood, small children like to hide in secluded corners, they can break through thin plywood and get injured.

  • The lid is made in any geometric shape: square, round, oval. Beginners can skip experimenting and settle for a square lid. It will have dimensions slightly larger than the main box 430x430 mm in order to protect it from falling inside.
  • The height of the finished product is made up of the constituent elements - the height of the structure is 400 mm, plus the rollers are 50 mm, the bottom and the tire are 32 mm thick, the upholstery is 50 mm, for a total of 532 mm.
  • From the prepared elements, the formation of the structure begins.
  • The sidewalls of the ottoman are fastened with metal corners. The bars, which glue all the inner corners, will help to strengthen the rigidity and reliability.
  • From the front side of the ottoman, the cut itself is screwed into the beams, the caps of which must be sunk into the wood, so that later there will be no problems with the torn upholstery.
  • The lower part of the box is coated with wood glue along the perimeter, capturing the ends of the beams.
  • The bottom of the ottoman is attached, and the cuts are screwed into the ends of the beams again. The assembled structure should dry well.
  • The base of the ottoman is made, but there are still no wheels and a lid on which you can sit in the future.
  • The lid is fixed with 4 bars screwed from the inside. The work is done after you are sure that the lid closes without hindrance and that the stiffening bars on the side do not interfere with the closure of the lid.
  • The finished structure is turned over, and the wheels are attached with cuts.

Attention: They are fixed through the bottom to the ends of the beams, for which small holes are drilled in the bottom.

Before continuing to work, you need to make sure that the resulting structure is sufficiently stable, holds the person sitting on it well and there are no shortcomings that interfere with further work, otherwise there is no point in starting upholstery.

Ottoman gets dressed

An ottoman made of wood with your own hands, made of chipboard or generally soft needs clothes on top. This function is honorably performed by a solid, upholstery fabric, neatly attached to the structure crate.

  • First, the cover of the ottoman is made out, for which a soft lining is cut out of foam rubber, padding polyester, batting. The size of the pad should correspond to the parameters of the seat so that it is neatly glued into place without drooping.
  • From the fabric intended for upholstery, a workpiece is cut out of a slightly larger size than the cover. This is done so that the edges can be folded under the lid and fixed from the inside with a stapler or furniture studs.
  • The instruction further prescribes to design the sides of the ottoman.
  • A piece is cut out of an upholstery fabric 400 mm x 4 = 1600 mm with a margin for connection. Also, in height, the material should have an allowance at the top and bottom.

Attention: The fabric must be trimmed, stretched, tucked inward, the edges must be secured with furniture studs or a stapler.

  • The seat is decorated, a niche is upholstered, all edges are neatly closed and you can present the finished product for control to discerning family members.
  • A do-it-yourself plywood ottoman is made according to the same scheme if an option of this simple design is chosen.
  • The work becomes a little more complicated when an opening drawer is provided on the ottoman, then the stopper bars are replaced with door hinges.

Getting acquainted with the design of this simple piece of furniture, one detail catches the eye: despite the difference in the shapes of ottomans and their types, the base is a rigid frame, there is a seat and legs. They are decorated in different ways, but quilted leather or leatherette gives the products an elite, luxurious look and you cannot immediately determine that the price of the product is within reasonable limits.

Although, it should be noted that a neat ottoman, trimmed with a different material, is able to bring comfort and convenience to the room and looks no less elegant than leather.

In order for a new comfortable and original piece of furniture to appear in your home, it is not at all necessary to go to the store and spend a lot of money. Of course, it is better to buy a sofa or a bed, but such an interior detail as an ottoman is not difficult to do with your own hands.

In addition, if you decide to start making an ottoman, you can make it the way that suits you best in design.

It will be possible to select the desired shape, material and color. However, this is not the only advantage of homemade ottomans, since its production may not cost anything at all.

Soft poufs

The easiest way is to sew the most frameless soft ottoman. To make it, you only need a piece of fabric, stuffing material and a sewing machine.

Although if there is none, then it is quite possible to do without it by stitching all the details by hand. In order for your ottoman to be even and look beautiful, you need to make a pattern out of paper. It should be a square with triangles at the ends.

Using this template, you need to cut 8 identical parts from the fabric, not forgetting to leave seam allowances. Moreover, you can use both one piece of fabric, and materials of different color and texture for each of the parts cut according to the pattern.

After all the details are ready, you need to sew them together to form a shape that looks like a ball. And in order for the ottoman to be stuffed, fold the top on the triangle of each of its parts inward.

Filler

In order for the pouf to keep its shape, a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber is well suited. But you can use other materials as well. Even fabric scraps are suitable as such.

To give the ottoman a finished look, you need to close the remaining hole by sewing on a circle of material with processed edges. If the edges of a round part are difficult for you to process, then it can be cut in the shape of an octagon.

You can simplify the task and sew a pouf from two round parts, which will be the top and bottom of the product, and two rectangular parts, which are the sides of the pouf.

The height of the ottoman can be adjusted by the width of the rectangle. But the length should always be equal to half the length of the cut out circle.

Sewing rectangular parts, stitching a circle to them and filling them with filler, you can get a round ottoman that will be soft and light. It will become not only a practical piece of furniture, but also a wonderful toy for children that cannot be hurt.

The cube-shaped ottoman is made in the same way. In this case, instead of two rectangular pieces and two circles, you need 6 squares. It is not difficult to make a cube out of them. And if you sew a secret zipper into one of the edges, then you can change the filler and wash the cover.

Pouf made of plastic bottles

The ottoman can be made with your own hands and from plastic bottles. They, of course, must have the same volume.

To do this, the upper part of the bottle, where it begins to taper, needs to be cut off and the part remaining without a cap must be put on another bottle of the same type. Repeating this procedure with other bottles, we form a round structure from them.

So that the bottles do not deform and the pouf does not lose its shape, we fasten them with adhesive tape.

A little trick is that the bottle, which is inside the other bottles of the same kind, fastened with ordinary transparent tape, can be pasted over with double-sided and glued to the inside of the rest of the bottles.

Note!

In order to cover the upper and lower areas, it is necessary to cut a circle out of cardboard or chipboard according to the diameter of the connected bottles. We glue foam rubber to these circles, and wrap the pouf with it on the outside.

It remains only to sew a cover for the finished ottoman. You can sew a zipper around the top of it.

Such furniture will save filler. And if the cover is made of raincoat or water-repellent fabric, then such furniture can even be placed on the street.

In addition, as you can see in the photo, round ottomans, made without a frame and containing plastic bottles inside, practically do not differ in appearance.

Pouf with lid

In order to make a pouf similar to those sold in stores, you need carpentry skills and some tools. To begin with, it is worth cutting out 4 rectangular parts from chipboard, 33 cm wide and 40 cm long.

Note!

Use wooden blocks to hold them together. A square with a side of 40 cm is attached at the bottom.As a result, you should get a kind of box.

This workpiece from the inside with a construction stapler can be sheathed with material. The square, which will act as a cover, is also sheathed from below with material. And the top, before being covered with an upholstery fabric, is pasted over with foam rubber in order to give the ottoman softness.

Along the entire outer perimeter, the pouf, like the lid, is wrapped in foam rubber. And only then upholstery with material. Hinges are used to attach the lid to the cube. To give this piece of furniture mobility, you can attach furniture wheels to the bottom.

It is even easier to make an ottoman with a lid from a bucket, a large saucepan or other utensils and utensils.

The main thing is that, like a pouf, they have a removable or opening lid. Then you just need to wrap the blank with foam rubber or other soft material and put a cover on it.

All homemade ottomans can perfectly fit not only into the interior of the apartment, but it is also a great option for a summer residence or outdoor recreation. After all, ottomans are lightweight, mobile due to their size and comfortable pieces of furniture.

Note!

They are very suitable for children's rooms, giving babies the opportunity to sit comfortably on them, or even build castles using poufs as cubes.

It is much more convenient to use such a piece of furniture to sit down at a low coffee table, because a homemade pouf can be made of any height.
