Kitchen renovations, as a rule, are not done for two or three years, since they are not that cheap for the owners. Because if you started major renovation when you don’t just need to change the wallpaper on the walls, but choose new furniture, make rearrangements, improve existing communications, etc., the first thing to do is carefully measure the kitchen and draw up a design project.

It is very important to think in advance about what your updated kitchen will look like, what materials you want to use to decorate it, what furniture and where to put it. By using similar project It will be easy to calculate an approximate estimate for the entire repair.

If you are able to independently replace windows, doors, lay a new floor and other finishing work, then the total cost repair work will be approximately two times smaller.

Now you can begin simple but active work, namely, freeing and clearing the space of all furniture, dismantling windows and doors, decoration from walls, floors and ceilings.

Next, you can install new wiring, sewer and water pipes, ventilation. After all this, you can start interesting stage repair - to finishing works: install new windows and plaster the walls and ceiling, if necessary, and lay a new floor.

How to choose finishing material for kitchen walls

Regardless of what style you choose for the kitchen, remember that functionality and convenience of both the working and dining areas are above all. Therefore, you need to approach the choice of materials for wall decoration wisely. Let's start with working area.

Kitchen apron

This is where your design project comes in handy. Having figured out the size of wall cabinets and height cutting table, you can determine the height and width of the work area apron. The apron (part of the wall between the cabinets and the desk), as a rule, performs protective function, and less often decorative.

In order for the apron to become a kind of “feature” of the work area, it can be finished in several ways.

  • Tile . This material is used most often because it has many advantages. Tiles are non-flammable, easy to clean, and durable. A wide variety of colors and shapes will allow you to choose tiles to suit the style of your kitchen.

  • Laminate. Depending on the chosen style, the apron can also be decorated with laminate, which looks very impressive. It is also easy to clean and somewhat resistant to stains. But be careful! This material is flammable.

  • Mirror panels. Non-standard and enough bold decision. This material is usually used with matte facades of the work area, which makes the space more voluminous. Mirror panels are non-flammable, but require very careful care (see also article about.

Painting the walls in the kitchen

Painting walls is one of the most effective and practical wall finishing options. It can stay “fresh” for a long time appearance, but on condition the right choice and subsequent proper care.

Brief instructions for choosing paint:

  • You should choose a special paint for the kitchen, since this is a room with a high level of humidity. The surface of the wall to be painted must be perfectly flat. Also, if your paint does not have antiseptic properties, the wall should be pre-primed.
  • Indoor paints with high humidity They are particularly resistant to mechanical stress, meaning the walls in the kitchen can be safely washed using a brush and household chemicals.
  • Preference should be given to paints with a matte or semi-matte effect, since dirt is very clearly visible on a glossy surface.

Advice! Best choice for the kitchen acrylic paint. It is characterized by increased durability and resistance to various types of influences, both atmospheric and mechanical. In addition, with the help of paint tinting, you can paint the kitchen in any color and decorate the walls with a stencil pattern.

How to choose wallpaper for the kitchen

If you decide to make do with wallpaper, then you also need to choose carefully. When buying wallpaper for the kitchen, look for special symbols on the label. The image of three waves and a brush means that the wallpaper is washable, and the image of a flame means that it is fire resistant.

For the kitchen, it is best to buy wallpaper made of paper with special impregnation or vinyl. Vinyl is an artificial material, and therefore strong and resistant to moisture. Quality vinyl wallpaper will depend on the thickness and density of the sheet.

Conclusion

Designing a kitchen yourself is not that difficult. The main thing is to accurately determine the desired style for yourself and get ready for painstaking work. If the final price of the whole undertaking does not scare you, then you will be able to bring to life the most striking and unusual design projects.

You can do the kitchen decor, the photo of which is nice to show to your friends, yourself. Of course, you will have to take into account many nuances, combine colors correctly, and use your imagination. But independent design it’s original, beautiful and, best of all, interesting. By taking on this difficult task, you can try yourself as a designer. Everything will be discussed in more detail later in the article.

Possible style

To make your kitchen look good, you can’t immediately run to a hardware store and choose the finishing materials that you like. This - bad decision, because as a result nothing will be combined with anything. But harmony is the main property of a beautiful interior.

First of all, it's worth looking at the styles. Each of them is a time-tested harmony in which you cannot make a mistake. The most popular kitchen styles can be divided into two groups.

Modern

The first ones are modern. The main advantages are that cheap synthetic materials are easily accepted and allow you to create a feeling of spaciousness. The main disadvantage is that not everyone likes it.

Among them, for example:

Already from a short memo it is clear what modern styles are. You can use any of them or choose one of the traditional ones.

Traditional

Traditional styles are expensive, but they look cozy, reminiscent of the atmosphere of specific areas. Among them:

  • Russian. The colors are wood, the material is also wood. As a contrast, it allows inclusions of white, red, black, yellow, but in small quantities. The furniture is wooden, optionally upholstered. Accessories in the design of folk crafts.
  • English. Better suited, of course, for big house than for a kitchen, even a spacious one, but it can still look good. The floor has a laminate or linoleum underneath, which is covered with a carpet. Wallpaper or wooden panels. An imitation fireplace on the stove. Beams, wooden or cushioned furniture, as tableware - aged kitchenware. Minimal textiles. Colors - wood with shades, plus brown or dark red.
  • Provence. Colors - white, cream, blue, pink. Laminate flooring, frivolous floral wallpaper on the walls, plastering the ceiling. Light furniture, from natural materials. Cafe style curtains that cover only half of the window. There must be a vase of flowers on the table.

Of course, the list of existing styles is much more extensive. But general idea you can make it like this. You don’t have to choose one of them; you can take it as an idea, and then refine it and remake it to suit yourself.

Stages

The repair process is ultimately divided into stages:

  • Concept drawing. At this stage you decide which colors you like and which you don't. Do you want minimalism or country style - or will you generally finalize the style on your own. What materials attract you and what materials you don’t want to see in your home. Based on the results, you draw a sketch of what you want to get.
  • Clarification of details. The drawn sketch must be checked for errors. Did it happen that there was suddenly wallpaper above the stove that could catch fire? Have you forgotten to think about the furniture, have you decided what kind of curtains you want? How much will all this cost, is it within your budget?
  • Purchase. You can order it with delivery, or you can carry the materials yourself.
  • Finishing. Consistently, first the ceiling, then the walls and floor, you carry out the plan. You can hire builders, you can work independently - as you like.
  • Arrangement of furniture and accessories. When the kitchen is ready, you need to furnish and decorate it.

If the concept was drawn up correctly, the resulting kitchen will look something like the picture from initial stage. But it may also happen that the concept changes ten times during the process. This is not a problem - the main thing is that in the end everything fits together with everything else.

How are we going to decorate the ceiling?

The ceiling is a good place to start when thinking about finishing in general. It can be very different:

  • Plastic tiles. They are rare; it is better not to decorate the space above the stove with them, since they are sensitive to temperature. They are not afraid of moisture, they look good and simple. Not a bad temporary solution.
  • Wooden planks (possible with imitation beams). They are expensive, but they look chic and fit well classic interiors. They do not like moisture and burn, but if you take expensive and well-treated wood, these shortcomings can be avoided.
  • Metal tiles. They are very rare; they are usually not used to cover the entire ceiling, since they are expensive and a real pain to wash. But they can be used to decorate a part - above the kitchen apron, for example, since they are not sensitive to any influence at all.
  • Stretch ceiling. They are not afraid of moisture and are easy to clean, making them a good choice for the kitchen. One minus - they react poorly to high temperature, so the space above the stove will need to be covered with something else.

And, of course, materials can be combined to obtain beautiful ceiling from two levels, for example.

From interesting solutions by finishing:
  • painted- looks good, especially in ethnic styles;
  • photo- allows you to imitate the sky, sea and anything else;
  • mirror- looks interesting, unusual and allows you to seriously increase the size of the room visually.

Advice

Two-level ceilings are a suitable solution for dividing the kitchen into two zones.

Wall decoration

Walls can be decorated with the most different ways. Among them:

  • Plastic panels. Suitable for modern democratic styles. There are very different color, with different textures, glossy or matte. They tolerate temperature changes and moisture well. But they crack easily from the slightest blow.
  • Wooden panels. Suitable for traditional styles. U kitchen apron They cannot be placed, but they look good and generally tolerate kitchen conditions well.
  • Tile. The most common finishing method. It does not burn, is not afraid of temperature changes, and looks beautiful. Relatively easy to crack - but still heavier than plastic. Easy to clean, not afraid of aggressive chemicals, with which both wood and plastic do not get along very well.
  • Dye. Common and simple, and also beautiful. Allows you to paint walls as desired, does not require much experience in the work. Does not suffer from mechanical stress, moisture or temperature changes. But you need to choose it carefully - cheap paints can be toxic.
  • Plaster. Or relief plaster. It has its own texture, usually matte. Allows you to create waves and patterns, giving the kitchen original look. It is not afraid of water or temperature changes, but is not suitable for all styles.
  • Brick. Like any stone, brick tolerates everything well. It cannot be set on fire or broken. It looks, however, specific.
  • Wallpaper. If you don’t take paper ones, but take glass wallpaper or non-woven ones, they will not be inferior in quality to paint. However, it is better not to attach them near the stove - they can melt from the heat. In addition, they are difficult to glue.
  • Steel. It’s insensitive to nothing at all, but it looks very specific and makes the kitchen more “cold” and “strict.” Does not require special care, but expensive.
Of course, you can combine different materials. So, metal goes well with glass tiles, and wood with wallpaper.

Advice

The main thing is not to try to get rid of synthetic materials interior in traditional style. The combination will look sad.

Floor finishing

While the ceiling and walls have a lot of finishing materials, the floor does not have this luxury.

There are very strict requirements for it in the kitchen - after all, something is constantly spilled or spilled on it - and only a few materials meet them:
  • Tile. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when trying to imagine a kitchen floor is tiles. Whether it is made of real stone or artificial stone, in any case it will look good and serve for a long time. It is very easy to wash off anything stuck on top and you can use any chemical. In addition, it takes a long time to wear out. The only negative is that if you drop something heavy on the tile, it will crack.
  • Linoleum. The second most popular solution. Linoleum looks beautiful, can imitate wood and is easy to clean. It does not have gaps like tiles that need to be cleaned separately. It wears out, however, much faster and fades over time. In addition, if you put something hot on it, it will leave an unsightly melted mark.

All other kitchen solutions are not suitable if you do not want to spend most of your time cleaning.

How to post materials?

The kitchen has two main areas - work and dining (unless, of course, you have a separate dining room in your house). They need different materials. Suitable for the work area:

  • On the floor. Both tile and laminate are both durable enough to use.
  • On the walls. Only materials that can easily survive wet cleaning, are not afraid of aggressive chemicals and do not suffer from temperature changes. It's either tiles, or expensive paint, or a natural stone. You can go the original route and use metal.

Combination of color and furniture

Finishing colors and furniture arrangement are, in fact, work in the same direction - this is working with the perception of space. Some items make it visually larger, others smaller, some interior solutions will expand it, others, on the contrary, will narrow it.

So, if you have a narrow hallway-like kitchen, you need to remember the following tips:
  • The ceiling must be light. Otherwise, the kitchen will become not only narrow, but also low.
  • The walls are also necessarily light. Otherwise, the kitchen will shrink even more. A good solution would be to decorate them with vertical stripes or on the side long wall place a large mirror or photo wallpaper. You can also paint the far wall a bright color to draw attention to it and distract it from the rest.
  • The floor can be either light or dark. The main thing is that it has either a diagonal or transverse pattern - this will bring the far wall closer.
  • Work zone . Can be placed either in one line, or in two, or in the letter “G”. All solutions are not bad, the main thing is that there is a passage of at least eighty centimeters.
  • Division into zones using a bar counter

If the kitchen is just small - not narrow, but small - a different approach is needed:
    • The ceiling should be light. The higher the room, the larger it seems.
    • The walls should also be light. A cool shade will make the room more spacious than a warm one. You can place photo wallpaper or mirrors on one of the walls, but wallpaper with a pattern is immediately prohibited - they will further make the room smaller.
    • The floor can be either light or dark. Light - in a small but relatively low kitchen. Dark - small but high.
    • Work zone. Compact. It is important to use the space not only on the floor, but also on the walls - cabinets and shelves will help you organize your life rationally.
    • Dinner Zone. Could be an excellent continuation of the working one. Combined bar counter, dinner table, acting as a “second level” to the worker. In a very small kitchen, you can limit yourself to making a table from a window sill. An original, fresh solution will help save space.
If the kitchen seems too big for you:
    • The ceiling is dark. It is undesirable to use cold colors, it is undesirable to use very dark shades. Something bright is better.
    • Walls too. Best of all - a warm shade. You can make them light, but with a repeating bright pattern, especially small ones.
    • The floor is dark. You can also add drawings to it, but you can do without it.
    • Work zone. Captivating almost the entire space.
    • Dinner table. Taste.
The colors in the kitchen must be combined:
    • Main color and shades. In this case, the shades act as accents that highlight any elements of the interior.
    • Two main colors. It looks good if the colors are contrasting and seem to fight to take over the kitchen. You can make contrasting work and dining area- this is the solution for modern styles, into which brightness fits well.
    • Main color and accents. There can be many accents, they can be contrasting. The difference from several main colors is that accents do not paint anything large, only accessories.

Doing everything in one color, without shades, is a bad idea. As well as putting a simple island table in the kitchen, without thinking that there are other solutions.

    There are different tables:
    • Island table. The most standard possible, standing on its own, surrounded by chairs. It takes up a lot of space, so it is not suitable for all kitchens.
    • Bar counter. Tall, narrow, takes up less space, can become an excellent work surface if necessary.
    • Folding table. Attaches to the wall and flips out if needed. Good decision for small kitchens.
    • Mobile table. Small, compact, more like a coffee table than a dinner one. Also a solution for small rooms.
    • Attached table. Attached to kitchen set, acts both as a working surface and as a dining surface.

To complete the kitchen decor, all that remains is to take care of the decorations.
