Flowers such as tulips are undoubtedly one of the most attractive and famous. For the first time, the bulbs of this plant were brought to Europe from Turkey, as one of the Austrian ambassadors managed to send them to Vienna. After receiving the bulbs, the chief manager of the Viennese garden began actively breeding and growing tulips.

Later great amount various varieties were obtained by breeders in the Netherlands. Therefore, this particular state is considered the birthplace of tulips, despite the fact that in fact it is not such. But Holland can rightfully be proud of the title of the Country of Tulips, since it was there that scientific gardeners and botanists developed and bred more than 1,500 thousand completely new varieties.

Classification of tulips

Since there are a huge number of types of tulips and their number only increases every year, the list of international classification is steadily updated and supplemented. Tulips are divided according to their characteristics into several classification groups, which differ in general characteristics, ripening time and visual perception of the plant. The main groups are divided into early-flowering and late-flowering, however, in addition to them, there are also flowers with an average flowering period and hybrids. Today we are interested in a certain variety of these wonderful plants, so next we will consider double tulips - varieties, photos and their features.

Early blooming double tulips

These flowers, whose original name is Tulipa Double Early, which means “double tulips,” appeared around 1613. The height of double early tulips is small, about 30 cm, therefore, despite the beautiful large flowers, the diameter of which reaches 12 cm, they are not used for cutting. The height of such flowers is larger than the previous ones, and can reach up to 60 cm.

This is an exclusive variety, which in addition has a pronounced attractive aroma.

It is worth noting that many varieties of double tulips are also fringed, since along the edges of the petals there is a fringe of needle-like outgrowths of various lengths that stick out in different sides. Most of the latest new products developed by breeders have fringe and other significant characteristics, such as increased doubleness, bicolor, variegation and multi-flowering. This is due to the fact that the selection of many plants is now moving towards the maximum combination of expressive qualities.

A few words about care

One of the main points of growing tulips is annual replanting. Double tulip bulbs are produced in small quantities, but they attract gardeners because they are not fussy to care for. To preserve the variety, they should be dug up every year. After the bulbs have been removed from the soil, they should be dried, the old layers should be cleaned and stored. The result of flowering, as well as general state plants in the future directly depend on compliance with the rules for preserving bulbs and temperature regime, which should not exceed 25 degrees with a plus sign.

Thus, we can conclude that terry tulips are especially memorable and original among other types. In all the variety of varieties, every gardener will be able to choose flowers that suit him and like them. With proper landing and further care They will not only be able to decorate the site and make changes to the landscape, but also bring a fresh touch and brightness to everyday life.

It is recommended to plant double tulips, as well as other varieties of unusual shapes, in the front zone of a flower bed, mixborder or next to paths. In addition, they look good in flowerpots and containers, which will allow you to admire each flower up close.

Among the thousands of varieties of tulips, there are those that invariably attract attention, causing surprise and admiration. Naturally, every gardener has his own preferences, but many people like terry and fringed varieties. Early terry varieties are also beautiful in their own way. They are, as a rule, not very high, so they are especially good on rocky hills, in border plantings and landscape compositions. But terry late varieties have a number of advantages over them. Fortunately, in the Russian language there is a fairly succinct and correct name for such varieties - densely double, i.e. having 18-20 petals or more in each glass. In English, all double and semi-double forms of plants are denoted by one word double, which literally means “double”, since the first double varieties, apparently, simply had double the number of petals.

Group of double late tulips (DoubleLate), number 11 in the garden classification of tulips, it unites varieties of various origins, which are characterized by large, about 10 cm in diameter, double flowers with wide rounded petals. Similar appearance with peony flowers, they are also called peony flowers. Unlike terry early varieties, blooming already at the end of April, double late ones bloom 8-12 days later and longer, up to 3 weeks, sometimes spanning the beginning of June. They are more powerful and tall, up to 50-60 cm in height, making them good for cutting and forcing. The flowers are more varied in color (white, pink, apricot, yellow, red, lilac, violet - almost black, there are two-color varieties). Some of the varieties have retained a wonderful aroma (Angelique, Alegretto, Cream Upstar, Monsella).

Terry late tulips appeared a very long time ago, immediately after the Dutch “tulip mania” subsided (the first variety was described in 1665), but none of the oldest varieties have survived to this day. Now the main varieties are those bred since the middle of the last century - Angelique, Carnaval de Nice, Lilac Perfection, Maywonder, Miranda, Monsella, Mount Tacoma, Renown Unique, Uncle Tom, Upstar, Wirosa. But in Lately new ones have appeared, worthy of attention, namely densely double varieties, which, without a doubt, can take the most advantageous places in your spring garden.

These varieties include, first of all, the variety Double Beauty of Apeldoorn, which was also assigned original name Sun Lover or " sun loving"for the orange-yellow color with red strokes. Unlike other varieties, the petals tightly cover the center of the flower, which resembles the shape of a fluffy ranunculus or a charmingly sloppy rose. The stems are tall, 50 cm.

No less beautiful is the new improved variety Orange Angelique, descended from the well-known and well-proven pale pink variety Angelique. Many people will like the red-burgundy variety Dream Touch and its white counterpart White Touch. The first of them is more than 10 cm in diameter, deep purple in color, with an elegant silver-white border that emphasizes the multiplicity of petals. The second has white petals with a greenish “illumination” at the base.

Very interesting is the bright red, densely double variety Redwood with satin petals of a deep red color. In addition, it has a strong tendency to be multi-flowered; with good agricultural technology, it can produce 3-4 flowers on each peduncle, forming a truly “Red Forest” in the flowerbed!

The yellow-orange-red variety Artist Double (Gudoshnik Double) is expressive and bright. All three colors in different combinations of tones and halftones are present in him at the same time! Old, good famous variety Gudoshnik produced a thick double sport, which Dutch manufacturers, without thinking twice, called Gudoshnik Double. Of course, the name is a little funny to our ears, but the tulip itself is very beautiful.

Blue Diamond is the “bluest” of the late terry tulips, purple-fillet in color, on strong stems. Capable of blooming for up to 3 weeks. Height 40 cm. Good both in the garden and as a cut flower.

Mascotte - lush double flowers with a delicate fringe along the edge, mesmerizing with purple-bluish undertones. Height 40 cm.

Sensual Touch - unusual flowers, reminiscent of begonias, orange and apricot shades, with fringe and a thin matte edging of the petals. Height 40 cm. Resistant to rain. Excellent for cutting, stands in water for up to 10 days.

Charming Lady - another stunning sport from the Angelica variety, 45 cm tall, with flowers 12-14 cm in diameter. Opens golden apricot, often with irregularly spaced streaks of pink, becoming paler as it blooms. Fragrant.

Sweet Desire is a romantic combination of soft lavender, pink and white tones with fresh pops of green on the outer petals. Particularly beautiful from above, when the flattened shape and dense white center flower. Good cut, height 45 cm. Flowering in medium terms, from early to mid-May.

Queensland is a luxurious tulip reminiscent of pink marzipan in a melting milky white glaze, with a thick fringe along the edge of the petals. Height 40-50 cm.

Cartouche - fragrant, terry, colors Ivory, with a “fluorescent” crimson border that increases in size as it blooms. In sunny weather the flowers are wide open. Height 40 cm. Excellent for cutting, keeps fresh in water for up to 10 days.

Brest is a luminous fringed tulip of deep pink color with a white border.

Drumline is a peony-shaped tulip, 50 cm high. The petals are deep pink with a white border.

Baccara - has the opposite combination of colors - the petals are white, with an irregular bright pink border. An exceptionally dense, densely “stuffed” flower. Great for borders and flower beds, as well as for cutting;

Yellow Mountain is a luxury sport from Mount Tacoma. A dreamy pale lemon color with subtle green flames on the outer petals. The slightly ruffled flower really resembles the shape of a peony. One of the largest among the late double flowers, flower diameter 10-12 cm, height 45 cm. Excellent cut.

Please note that many of these varieties are also fringed; along the edges of their petals there is a fringe of hard, needle-like outgrowths of different lengths, sticking out in all directions. At the top of the petals the fringe is usually thickest and longest. It is also present in the super-novelties - canary yellow, with a slight “spray” of orange in the center, the Artichoke variety and the orange Dutch Pioneer variety with a yellow border.

The variegated pink-red variety Eternal Flame is extremely interesting. It not only has beautiful and original-shaped flowers, but also spectacular foliage edged with soft pink stripes. It's short mid-late variety, up to 30 cm. The color of the flowers resembles bright pink-red lipstick. The buds and then the outer petals have white and green flames. An exclusive variety that also has a delicious aroma.

As you can see, often new varieties, in addition to increased terry, simultaneously demonstrate the presence of other valuable characteristics - two-color, fringed, multi-flowered, variegated. The selection of many plants is now moving along the path of combination the largest number expressive signs.

Terry tulips, like other varieties with flowers of unusual shapes - fringed, parrot-shaped, etc., are usually planted in the foreground of flower beds, mixborders or near paths, as well as in containers and flowerpots, so that you can admire each flower up close.

If the flower beds with tulips are large enough, then their monotonous green color, before the buds develop, can be diversified by planting early low-growing varieties with decorative variegated (variegated) foliage with white-cream, white-pink or yellow edging. In this sense, the varieties Albion Star, China Town, Donna Bella, Gluck, Green River, Oratorio, Red Riding Hood, Rosario, Plaisir, Sweet Lady and especially Praestans Unicum, Fire of Love and Multi Orange Desighn are very interesting.

Between mid-late and late double tulips it is good to plant a low anemone, a tender anemone, blooming at the same time. (Anemonablanda). And multi-colored or plain crocuses will effectively and stylishly decorate your flowerbed in April - early May. Arabis, viols, muscari and saxifrage, which are blooming at this time, can be used as ground cover and framing plants. All of the plants listed above can be combined in mixed mixborders, adding to them some bright daffodils, hazel grouse, primroses or various small-bulbous plants. Yellow and white low-growing and medium-growing daffodils, muscari and crocuses, primroses, forget-me-nots, various sedums, arabises, lilies and especially pansies and daisies go well with tulips.

The rules for planting terry late tulips are no different from others. Planting depth is approximately 2.5-3 times the height of the bulb, counting from its bottom. The distance between plants depends on the purpose of planting and varies from 10 to 12 cm. Tulips form numerous roots in a layer 10-15 cm thick, so it is better to prepare a layer of soil for planting with a depth of at least 25-30 cm. better flowering Next spring, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied before autumn digging. Typically, under all bulbous plants it is recommended to add coarse river sand with a low content of clay inclusions, as well as well-rotted compost and dolomite flour for deoxidation.

If the spring turns out to be dry, planting tulips must be watered regularly and abundantly. In Holland, it is believed that a summer with moderately heavy rainfall is good for tulips. However, they are grown there only within a 30-kilometer radius. coastal zone, on sandy and sandy loam lands. In our areas with a high content of clay fraction, excess moisture can lead to a completely opposite result, so it is advisable to add more coarse grains when planting bulbs. river sand and ensure good moisture and air permeability of the soil.

During the period of development and growth of buds, plant care consists of shallow loosening of the top layer of soil and weed control. For fertilizing, it is best to use special fertilizers for bulbous crops. Large, heavy flowers of double late tulips can be damaged by wind and rain and even break off. However, new varieties have stronger stems and are generally wind-resistant. For them, it is important to follow agricultural technology so that the flowers fully reveal all their decorative characteristics, and the main quality for which they are grown is terry.
