How to apply silk screen wallpaper. Interior decoration with silk-screen wallpaper. What glue is needed for silk-screen wallpaper?

Silk-screen vinyl wallpaper allows you to make any interior beautiful and unique. These materials are a type vinyl wallpaper, which are glued to walls quite simply, are made on the basis of vinylized paper, painted using a rather complex technology.

Silkscreen vinyl wallpaper is produced by hot stamping, applying polyvinyl chloride interspersed with silk or artificial threads onto a base, and then, using high pressure, the material is embossed. The article suggests getting acquainted with the features of the material and gluing it to the walls with your own hands.

Silk-screen printing allows dye to be applied in a thick layer of any consumable material.

In this case, the embossing technique includes several technological operations:

  • Frame tension.
  • Selection of screen fabric.
  • Selection of colors.
  • Obtaining stable forms.
  • Drying.

Silk-screen printing and vinyl wallpaper have several advantages:

  • The production process is quite simple.
  • A wide variety of consumables are used.
  • The layer of applied paint has a significant thickness.
  • Coverings with bright and rich colors.
  • For small and medium circulations the price is not high.
  • There are solutions that cannot be accomplished using other printing methods.
  • Silk-screen wallpaper has sufficient durability.
  • Have spectacular appearance.

The silk-screen printing technology looks something like this:

  • A canvas made of paper or non-woven fabric is impregnated with polyvinyl chloride - PVC.
  • Thin silk threads or artificial fibers are interspersed into the resulting stripes.
  • Vinylized paper is subject to extreme heat.
  • Executed under high pressure surface embossing.

After completing all the operations, a canvas is obtained that looks like paper and textiles, which is associated with the use of both.

Advice: To improve the characteristics of the material, you should use a non-woven wallpaper base; it is much better than paper.

Features of silk screen printing

Silk-screen wallpaper consists of two layers:

  • Bottom made of paper or non-woven fabric, which allows you to reliably glue the material to the surface.
  • The top is made of vinyl with silk threads included, its structure can be embossed or smooth, very similar to silk fabric. Silk-screen printing is made for textured plaster and leather.

In the interior, silk-screen printing and vinyl wallpaper look great on the wall. Most often, these materials have floral patterns and paintings to imitate silk fabric as much as possible, with beautiful and clear patterns, which creates the full impression of having silk fabric with gilded threads on the walls, as seen in the photo.

Advantages of silk screen printing:

  • High strength provided by the vinyl used in manufacturing.
  • Increased wear resistance.
  • Durability.
  • Resistant to sun rays.
  • Rolls are available in large widths.

Despite the high cost of silk-screen wallpapers, they are quite popular. The coating can give the interior a unique sophisticated charm and luxury.

They are suitable for finishing any room in the apartment:

  • Living room (see How to choose wallpaper for the living room: designer tips).
  • Bedrooms.
  • Kitchens (see What is the best wallpaper for the kitchen: making a choice).

The unique effect of high cost of the material is given by the silkiness and pleasant shine of the surface.

Tip: When gluing silk-screen wallpaper in the kitchen, you must take into account that the moisture resistance of the material should be higher. In this case, you should choose wallpaper with a matte or glossy smooth surface; a rough structure will make cleaning and caring for the wallpaper difficult.

Gluing silk-screen printing in the bedroom can be done with canvases of any thickness and density, they do not have special significance. In the bedroom, wallpaper is not subject to such intensive use as in the hallway or kitchen.

What are the advantages of silk-screen wallpaper?

The features of silk-screen printing determine the advantages of wallpaper made from this material.

These include:

  • Safety for humans and animals.
  • Not allocated for people harmful substances, non-toxic.
  • They have no smell.
  • Easy and simple to clean, can be cleaned with a dry or damp cloth.
  • Service life up to 15 years.
  • Excellent appearance.

In addition to the advantages, silk-screen wallpaper also has some disadvantages:

  • They require careful and impeccable preparation bases before gluing on the walls, this is due to the fact that the wallpaper is quite thin.
  • The material does not breathe.
  • When burned, they can release toxic substances.

Enough thin wallpaper after gluing on crooked or poorly prepared walls, all wall defects will be revealed.

Tip: A chic and expensive interior will be created by silk-screened wallpaper after hanging by a master and the most careful preparation of the wall. In this case, the canvases must be glued strictly vertically using a high-quality level, preferably a laser, or a plumb line.

Silk-screen wallpaper is chosen so that it is in harmony with the rest of the room's interior elements. It is difficult to choose standard room furniture for them (see Selecting furniture to match the color of wallpaper: advice from professionals). When purchasing this luxurious wallpaper, preference should be given to quality materials from a proven and reliable manufacturer.

How to stick silk screen printing on walls

The work instructions suggest:

  • Pick up the right glue under the wallpaper base material.
  • The coating dries quite quickly.

Advice: To avoid problems when gluing such wallpaper, special attention should be paid to its quality. If the manufacturer skimps on the top coating, the material will lose its elasticity and will not be well saturated with glue. Both coating layers must react equally to moisture and mechanical stress.

  • All required tools and materials are prepared:
  1. putty;
  2. primer;
  3. special glue;
  4. spatulas of different widths;
  5. stationery knife and glue for sealing seams.
  • Prepare the walls for wallpapering:
  1. aligned;
  2. putty;
  3. covered with primer.

This will allow, after applying the material, to avoid the presence of visible wall defects and bubbling of the paintings:

  • Wallpapering begins from the side of the windows to the door. In this case, the joints will be less noticeable.
  • Should be perfectly smooth vertical angle between the wall and the window, which is controlled by the slope. If there is a deviation from perpendicularity, you should mark the plumb line, which must be done when gluing all the panels.
  • The wallpaper is applied to the corner and the length is measured.
  • A piece of wallpaper is cut according to the marks and smeared with glue.
  • The sheet is left to soak for several minutes.
  • The sheet is applied to the wall and using a special rubber roller, leveled from the center of the sheet to the edges.
  • The corner gap between the wall and the window is sealed.

Tip: If the sheets are placed overlapping, you need stationery knife draw a vertical strip under the ruler so that both sheets are cut at once. Excess pieces of wallpaper are removed.

Thus, the wallpaper is pasted around the entire perimeter of the room. To prevent them from coming off, the edges of the wallpaper can be treated at the joints with a special adhesive for seams and a paper backing can be made.

We should not forget that silk-screen wallpaper should harmonize well with the entire decoration of the room:

  • Furniture.
  • Floor covering.
  • The ceiling.

All interior details must correspond to the chic surroundings. Best suited for this expensive furniture, used in the palaces of French kings in the 16th and 17th centuries. This video will help you to choose the right interior for silk-screen wallpaper.

What it is?

This is a type of vinyl wallpaper with a pattern applied using a special silk-screen printing or hot stamping method. Production is carried out in several stages. Vinylized colored paper is applied to a paper or non-woven base, which is impregnated with polyvinyl chloride, after which the canvas goes through the embossing process. The thickness of the vinyl layer can be different, this allows you to adjust the strength of the material.

The photo shows a bedroom in the new classic style. Beautiful accent wall turquoise color harmonizes with other interior details of the same shade.

The pattern is created using silk or synthetic fibers. Visually, the coating is similar to silk, the material is durable and shiny. The pattern can be monochromatic or colored, or also imitate different materials, such as leather or wood.

Types of bases

Non-woven

Silk-screen wallpaper on a non-woven base is more durable. The material is elastic, has better contact with moisture and can hide minor wall defects. In addition, non-woven coatings are more reliable and convenient when working with them; you don’t have to worry about the fabric tearing, stretching or warping. This type of wallpaper has a longer service life, but its cost is an order of magnitude higher than paper.

The photo shows a compact, bright living room with modern design. Due to the light furniture and pattern on the wallpaper, the room does not seem dark.

Paper

When gluing you need to be careful, as the coating is very delicate and can tear. Paper-based silk-screen wallpapers must be applied to a flat surface; they are not able to hide uneven walls.

Peculiarities

The silk screen coating has a number of distinctive features, which have a positive effect on the characteristics of the material.

  • The silk-screened surface of the wallpaper presents a luxurious shiny canvas; this effect can only be achieved using silk-screen printing.
  • Large roll width, most often meter wide. This is very convenient when gluing, there are fewer joints.
  • The coating does not fade in the sun.
  • No harmful chemicals are used in the production of wallpaper.

Advantages and disadvantages

Such consideration of the characteristics and nuances of the material helps determine the choice.

A few words about silk-screen printing

The now fashionable finishing stripes appeared more than 100 years ago. This is a type of vinyl wallpaper on a paper base. They got their name due to a special manufacturing technology. In the production of this material, vinyl is applied to paper using the hot stamping method. As a result, the surface of the strips is smooth and very similar in appearance to silk, having the same shine. The pattern of such wallpaper is usually quite large, but the vinyl stripes on the wall look rich and beautiful.

It’s also worth it because they have many advantages. Silk-screen printing is an environmentally friendly product. This type of wallpaper can be used to cover any room, even one that is quite humid (bathroom or kitchen). Silk-screen printing is not afraid of water, so walls covered with it can even be washed. This type of decor for a long time will remain attractive and fresh. The only drawback of such vinyl wallpapers is their thin structure, and if they are glued to rough surface, then any wall defects will break through the canvas, which will negate all the charm of silk-screen printing. To prevent this from happening, and to prevent the person who bought hot-stamping vinyl from being disappointed in it forever, before doing so, he must prepare the vertical surfaces in a special way.

Preparing walls and vinyl wallpaper for future pasting

The most important stage of work before gluing silk-screen printing is the careful preparation of vertical surfaces for gluing wallpaper on them. As mentioned above, hot stamping vinyl will only look great on perfectly smooth and smooth walls. If the walls in the room do not meet these requirements, they will need to be puttied and then treated with a primer. First, remove a layer of old wallpaper from all surfaces. This can be done using metal brush and a knife. Next, the walls are cleaned of dust, pieces of plaster and mold, if any. Now you can inspect the bare surfaces for unevenness. If you find any depressions or bulges, you will need to smooth them out. For this purpose, starting and finishing putty. The starting mixture should be carefully taken from the container with a spatula and applied to the wall in small strokes, which are then leveled with the same spatula on the wall surface in a layer of 2-3 mm. Special attention is given to the base of the walls and surface defects.

The next layer will be finishing putty, apply it to the wall and level it in the same way. After this, you need to give the surface about a day to dry. After this period, the wall must be sanded with sandpaper until smooth. The final stage of preparing a wall for applying wallpaper is priming. The vertical surface is coated with a special deep penetration primer so that the canvases stick to it better.

To ensure that silk-screen wallpaper sticks to the wall, it is recommended to select a special glue for it. This could be a composition for heavy wallpaper. In accordance with the instructions, the glue is diluted with water in a container prepared for it and mixed thoroughly. After 15-20 minutes you can begin the gluing process. In the meantime, it’s worth preparing several wallpaper strips for it. To do this, take a roll of hot-stamped vinyl and unfold it to the full height of the wall. Add 1.5-2 cm to the top and bottom of the canvas and only then cut off part of the roll. Since silk-screen wallpaper comes with fairly large patterns, you will need to select patterns to match them with adjacent stripes. The instructions will help with this, which should indicate at what intervals the pattern is repeated. Next, next to the cut piece of wallpaper, a silk-screen print of another roll is placed, the corresponding drawing is found, the match is measured using a ruler, a mark is made on the second canvas with a pencil, then it is cut to the required length, like the first. By this time, the wallpaper glue is ready for use.

Gluing silk-screen vinyl wallpaper onto a vertical surface

The stage of directly placing the hot-stamped vinyl on the wall has arrived. How to properly glue silk-screen printing? First, the windows and doors in the room should be tightly closed so that the wallpaper does not peel off several hours after the completion of the work process. Then two prepared strips are placed on the table with the pattern down and glue is applied to them using a brush so that it is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the paper. Next, each canvas is folded in half and left for 10 minutes, since it is not recommended to glue the wallpaper right away: you need to wait until the canvases are impregnated with the composition. In order for the silk-screen printing to lie in an even stripe on the wall, it is recommended to use a level and a pencil to mark the line of its placement on the wall. While the wallpaper is impregnated with the composition, a layer of glue should also be applied to the vertical surface with a fur roller or the same brush. The upper and lower parts of the wall are coated with it especially carefully.

The silkscreen should be glued correctly away from the window. The first strip is placed on a vertical surface along the marked line and pressed tightly against it. It is better to smooth the wallpaper with a rubber roller, starting from the center of the canvas and dispersing air bubbles to the edges. Next, mark the location of the second silk-screen strip along the level and glue it in the same way as the first, placing it end-to-end with the edges of the first strip. After this, all operations, i.e. cutting the rolls, coating them and the walls with the composition and gluing the wallpaper to the surface, are done in the same way. To avoid getting glue on the front vinyl side, wipe your hands with a clean cloth.

If there is a socket or switch in the way of the wallpaper, a cross-shaped cut is made with a knife above them on the strip of vinyl, which can then be easily cut out in a circle. Wallpapering is most difficult in the corners of the room. Usually a strip of wallpaper is placed on the corner so that part of it is on one wall and part on the other. Then they take a new strip of silk-screen vinyl with a selected pattern that matches the pattern of the corner strip, and paste it so that it slightly overlaps the corner strip from above. Be sure to use a level to ensure that the correct location this wallpaper strip on a vertical surface. If the silk-screen printing lags a little at the top, bottom of the wall and along the edges, these places must be carefully coated with a thin brush with adhesive composition and smooth the strip again with a roller.

The next day, use a knife with a well-sharpened edge to trim off the excess top and bottom parts of the vinyl wallpaper. After cleaning the room and arranging the furniture in it, you can admire the result of your work. Fresh and bright, properly glued silk-screen wallpaper will stick securely to the walls and will add a touch of newness to the room, which you will now want to stay in longer than usual.

Silk-screen printing is a special type of wallpaper that becomes a real interior decoration. These wallpapers are very beautiful and pleasant to the touch. Not every House master knows how to apply silkscreen wallpaper. Let's talk about some features.

Any work must begin with preparation. Wallpapering was no exception.

First, clean the walls thoroughly. Your task is to remove old wallpaper and, if necessary, clean the walls from dust, dirt and mold. This is very important stage, because otherwise the work will be done poorly.

Secondly, the walls need to be made smooth. The fact is that silk-screen printing is very thin wallpaper. If the walls in your apartment are fairly smooth, you can limit yourself to one thin layer putties. If there are significant unevennesses, you need to first apply a layer of starting putty, and then another layer of finishing putty.

Thirdly, after the putty has dried, in both cases it is necessary to coat the walls with a deep penetration primer. It will help make the walls perfect, and will also allow the wallpaper to better adhere to the surface.

In order to hang wallpaper, you first need to buy a special glue. It is written on the packaging of the glue what kind of wallpaper it is intended for. By the way, you should also study the instructions that come with each roll of wallpaper - it contains recommendations for choosing glue.

To work you will need rollers. It would be great if you can buy both rubber and fur rollers. You also need a glue brush. Of course, you won’t be able to cut wallpaper without a knife and scissors, and you need to measure it using a tape measure. Lastly, don't forget to take a clean napkin or just a soft, clean cloth.

Now you can get to work. First you need to cut the wallpaper into pieces. If you bought plain wallpaper, you won't have any problems. However, the vast majority of silk-screen wallpapers are made with a pattern, so you will have to ensure that the pattern pitch is strictly observed (this value is usually indicated in the instructions or you will have to measure it yourself).

Using a tape measure, measure the height of the walls and add 4 cm to this value - the resulting number will be the length of one piece. Unroll two rolls at once on the floor or table, placing them side by side, select the pattern and cut. WITH reverse side a piece of wallpaper, mark where the top is and where the bottom is, and place all the prepared pieces face down in a stack.

Finally, you can proceed directly to wallpapering. First you need to coat the wallpaper with glue. Using a fur roller, apply glue to a piece of wallpaper and leave for 10 minutes (unless otherwise indicated in the instructions) - during this time the wallpaper can become saturated with glue.

You need to start gluing wallpaper from the window. The first piece is glued along the slope. Remember that you should also apply a layer of glue to the wall. The corner is sealed with a separate piece. Important: carefully check the evenness of the gluing using a level.

When you move to another wall, you need to draw a line vertically with a pencil, marking the width of the piece. The canvases are glued together. To ensure that the wallpaper lays evenly, use a rubber roller. Make movements from the middle to the edge - this way you can remove all air bubbles and folds. Don't press too hard or you risk damaging the blade. After the piece of wallpaper is pasted, run a cloth along the edges to remove excess glue.

In order to stick the wallpaper tightly at the top and cut off the excess part, place a spatula (it should be wide) and run a knife along it. After this, press the edges of the wallpaper tightly. By the way, the same method is used when you glue wallpaper under the window. The knife must be very sharp. Otherwise, it will simply wrinkle the wallpaper and ruin it.
