How to install a sliding door yourself. DIY sliding doors

IN modern apartments in most cases there is not enough free space. Small areas of residential premises are occupied by furniture and Appliances. Significant space is devoted to swinging interior doors.

Some people, if possible, dismantle such structures, leave the opening empty or decorate it with an arch. However, there are rooms where it is impossible to remove them, for example, the bedroom. Alternative option conventional system steel sliding or sliding interior doors. They allow you to save usable area premises, which is very important in small apartments Oh.

Those who want to increase the space of the room should know what types of structures exist, what are their advantages and disadvantages, as well as how to install sliding doors on one's own.

Types of sliding doors

Sliding devices are classified depending on the material of manufacture, the number of panels, the opening method and design features.

Sliding interior doors are becoming increasingly popular. This is not surprising, because they have certain advantages:

  1. Significant savings in room space.
  2. Smooth running of the blade.
  3. They have the ability to install automation devices.
  4. They prevent the occurrence of drafts and eliminate the possibility of plowing open due to a strong gust of wind.
  5. Aesthetic appearance allows you to install sliding interior doors in any interior.
  6. Visually increase the space.

However, sliding interior doors also have disadvantages:

  1. Low level of sound and heat insulation, tightness. In this regard, such doors are not suitable for installation in bathrooms.
  2. The high cost of the door itself, as well as the locking devices designed for it.
  3. The walls used to install a sliding interior door must be prepared in a certain way. Furniture and other interior items, electrical equipment and open electrical wiring should not be located along them.

Preparing for installation of a sliding interior door

You can install a sliding interior system yourself. For this you will need:

  1. Power tools: hammer drill - for drilling holes in concrete wall; screwdriver - for tightening fasteners.
  2. Plumb. This tool is necessary for vertical adjustment (leveling) of the sliding interior door structure.
  3. A marker is required to apply markings.
  4. To take measurements, you should prepare a tape measure.

Installation of a sliding interior door: features

Sliding interior doors can be installed in different ways depending on the opening method. Therefore, before starting installation work, you should choose the option that is most suitable for a particular room.

  1. When opened, the door slides along the wall. In this case, the guides are installed first.
  2. When the device opens, it rests against the rack. Here, the installation of a special rack is initially required.
  3. When opened it goes into a niche in the wall. This type requires certain preparatory steps. Namely, part of the wall must be destroyed and a special structure made of plasterboard sheets installed in its place.

Correct location installed structure will allow the canvas to move easily and smoothly along the rollers.

It should be taken into account that the size of the door must be greater than the width of the opening. Otherwise, noticeable gaps may form, which will spoil the aesthetic appearance.

Installation sequence

Before installing sliding interior doors, you must complete all Finishing work indoors and only then proceed with installation.

Installation is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Installing the top guide. To do this you will need to install mounting beam with a guide profile attached to it.
  2. The mechanism carriage is attached to the guide installed on top. After this, limiters are placed on both sides of the rail.
  3. Installation of mounting brackets.
  4. Installation in the center of the lower guide profile.
  5. Hanging the canvas itself by threading fastening brackets onto the carriage bolt. Then tighten the carriage nuts first, and then the brackets.
  6. The canvas must be removed and the floor rail installed. After this, the door leaf is hung again.
  7. Position limiters are installed.
  8. Assembly and installation of decorative pencil case.

The installation of the guides is carried out strictly horizontally to prevent arbitrary opening and closing of the system.

Adjusting the installed door

For better visual perception of the structure after installation, adjustment of the position of the canvas itself is required.

What should be the result of installing a sliding interior system?

  1. Tight and uniform fit of the fabric to the structure.
  2. Moving the canvas parallel to the floor surface.
  3. The canvas moves easily, smoothly, without noticeable interference.
  4. The locking device is fully functional.

By setting the average position of the door leaf, you can visually eliminate some distortions and even uneven walls.

Sliding interior design will give the room lightness and add space. A different kinds The design of such systems will create a certain atmosphere in the surrounding space.

It's hard to imagine our life without doors. Their purpose is to freely let us through walls, limiting, if desired, this opportunity for strangers: people, animals, smells or bad weather. Present in every home, these guardians of comfort and safety, as if in payment for their work, often limit the usable area of the room due to the opening radius, and the wider the opening blocked by the door, the greater these losses. IN Lately, in construction the principle of “free planning” is actively used, when the room inside is an empty box, without load-bearing walls and other partitions. This method is beneficial both to the developer (by reducing the delivery time of the project) and to the end user, allowing him to furnish an apartment or office to his own taste and color. In this case, the question of rational and aesthetic zoning of the room inevitably arises.

An apartment is for people, not for doors

An excellent solution in this case would be to install partitions, sliding doors, roller shutters or accordion doors, allowing, in addition to the lightness and functionality of the design, to significantly increase the usable area. In turn, for standard small-sized apartments, in conditions of limited free space, this method of dividing rooms can become almost a panacea. In addition, installing glass sliding doors with a mirror base will visually expand the space and, thanks to the reflective effect, make the room brighter.

How it works?

In a slider system (also called: on rollers it slides along one or two guides fixed along the wall, hiding behind one of its sides when opened. Moreover, both for installing a single-leaf sliding door and in the case of two door leaves, the installation technology remains the same and depends only on the length of the guides and the availability of space for placing the door leaves. A widespread option is when the door goes inside the wall, in the so-called door pocket or pencil case. This method, despite the additional difficulties of installation, allows you to ensure the integrity of the design of the room and protects the surface of the door from accidental damage.

Advantages over competitors

In addition to saving space, a big advantage of slider mechanisms, compared to the same accordion door, is the possibility of using a leaf similar to conventional swing doors, with their huge range (both in appearance and in manufacturing material). In this aspect, only the slider system can compete with rotary door, however, it is much more expensive and more difficult to install, and also takes up more space when opened.

If the walls, floor and doorway have ideal geometry, then the process of installing sliding interior doors do it yourself, in a certain sense, even easier traditional installation, which is explained by large tolerances when mating surfaces. As mentioned above, two methods of arranging doors are used: along and inside the wall. Let's look at each of these options, understanding the installation process step by step.

Instructions for installing a sliding door along a wall

The first step is to clear the opening from the old door (if installed), including the trim and frame. Regardless of the installation method on preparatory stage installation, it is necessary to perfectly align the walls around the doorway.

Preparing the doorway

The opening for the door must have a clear geometry: the side slopes correspond to the vertical, and its upper part must be parallel to the floor and the horizon (to check, use a tape measure, building level and plumb line). The permissible difference both horizontally and vertically is no more than 5 mm along the entire length of the opening. Then, using self-tapping screws or liquid nails, additional strips are attached, on which they are mounted door frames. The resulting size of the opening must be completely, without gaps, covered by the door leaf being hung, taking into account the roller mechanism. The height is selected so that, after installation, the distance between the bottom of the door and the floor is 5-6 mm, which is important for improving sound insulation.

Using long rule, you need to make sure that the wall (in the direction the door opens) is in the same plane with the opening to be closed.

Placement of guides and assembly of the slider system

Now we proceed to install the sliding door mechanism, which is a kit consisting of metal profile, a pair of roller carriages, a bottom guide, travel stops and fasteners. Choice quality system sliding is very important for the smooth and durable operation of the entire door unit.

When moving a door along a wall, as a rule, one (upper) guide rail is used, the length of which should be no less than twice the width of the door leaf (or better, exceed it by 100-150 mm). Manufacturers offer profiles of 2, 3, 4 and 6 meters in length, which are often equipped with notches that determine the required size of the guide to suit one or another standard width doors.

  • At a distance of 60 mm, parallel to the upper slope of the opening, brackets are installed on the wall for fastening the profile, the role of which can be played by a spacer, which is a pine beam with a cross section of 50x70 mm, equal in length to the guide profile. The supporting elements must be fastened securely, as they will support the entire structure. To avoid skewing and jamming of the door, it is extremely important to perfectly maintain the horizontal level of the brackets (distance gasket) and their strict parallelism to the floor.
  • The guide profile is attached with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the beam at a distance of 5-10 mm from the plane of the wall (platband).
  • At the upper end of the door leaf, rollers for sliding doors are installed using self-tapping screws. They are placed on both sides at a distance of 100-110 mm from the edges to the axis of fastening of the moving part.
  • The lower guide gives the door additional stability and, depending on the configuration, may look like C-bracket or brand. In the second case, using a router or drill and chisel, it is necessary to select a groove along the entire length of the lower end of the door that is a couple of millimeters greater than the thickness of the guide flag.

Hanging and finishing the door

  • After this, a movement limiter and a rubber shock absorber are installed in the aluminum guide, which can move freely along the rail and is rigidly fixed after hanging the door leaf.
  • Then, if there is free space along the wall, the roller carriages are inserted into the profile, holding the door attached to them in a hanging position. The installation is completed by installing the response shock absorber and plug. Before hanging, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the guide from debris and other foreign objects that impede the free movement of the carriages.

  • If space is limited, the profile is attached to the spacer (brackets) immediately together with the door leaf and movement limiters. In this case, for high-quality fixation of the structure, it is better to work with an assistant, achieving ideal observance of the horizon and a uniform distance from the wall along the entire length of the profile (for which it is convenient to use a template from wooden blocks prepared in advance).
  • After that, they check the ease of sliding of the door along the wall, and in case of uneven movement or slight misalignment, using adjusting screws located on the roller carriages, the position of the door leaf is finely adjusted to an ideal state. To avoid loosening of fastener elements (after adjusting the door), it is recommended to process the adjusting screws adhesive composition or sealant.
  • On next stage it is necessary to install the lower guide bracket, placing it in the middle of the working stroke of the door so that in any position of the door leaf the guide is always in engagement with it. In any case, the mounting location should be outside the doorway (next to the slope towards which the door opens).
  • Now you can install handles, a lock (if necessary) and a decorative strip covering the slider mechanism, which must be removable to allow maintenance and adjustment of the roller carriages.

Hiding the doors in the wall

For the second installation method (using a “door pocket”), let’s take a look at the installation instructions, which differ from the first option only in the additional, albeit very serious, volume construction work. The very same fastening of the slider mechanism is similar to the process given above.

First you need to decide on the principle of forming a “door pocket”, and here, depending on a number of factors, there are two options:

  1. The structure is created in place of a large doorway, at least twice the width of the door being installed (allowing a door leaf and a pencil case to be placed in it). In this case, a hollow frame is formed on both sides of the door, imitating a blank wall from the outside.
  2. An existing wall of sufficient width is used as one of the sides of the “door pocket” design. But this does not at all mean saving materials and simplifying installation, since, in order to create the visual integrity of the wall, the frame will have to be mounted over its entire area, both above the door frame and in the direction where there will be no pencil case.

The first method of creating a “secret shelter” for installing sliding interior doors with your own hands is preferable, since it allows you to make the frame less massive, indistinguishable in thickness from regular wall, and is most often used in new buildings, especially in “open plan” conditions.

Breaking is not building, or the nuances of expanding a doorway

If you are an adherent of the principle of beauty, which requires sacrifice, then you will have to work hard to expand the doorway to the required width. The main thing is to pay attention to some important aspects:

  • This is a permanent wall or just a partition. In the first case, it will be necessary to take additional measures to strengthen bearing capacity expandable opening (but it is safer to use the option of a pencil case attached to the wall).
  • To avoid additional problems, make sure that there are no electrical, plumbing or other communications inside the section of wall being removed (check the house plan, use a wiring detector if necessary).
  • Decide whether you will need an electrical, network or antenna socket on the wall with a door pocket; if so, then the wiring needs to be prepared in advance.

Arranging a door frame with your own hands

The material for creating the frame can be galvanized building profiles or wooden beams of the appropriate size, which are attached along the perimeter of the future “door pocket” in two parallel rows. When used already existing wall You will need one row, but it will have to be installed over its entire area minus the doorway. The technology for constructing a false wall frame itself is similar to creating a partition from plasterboard and involves the installation vertical racks with a pitch of 400-600 mm, fastened together by jumpers in order to increase the rigidity of the structure. For not so much heavy doors(up to eighty kilograms), if it is necessary to form the upper part of the opening, a beam with a side width of about 50 mm is used, and with a higher load the frame is made welded (which is hardly justified in a private house or apartment).

The space between the rows should guarantee the unhindered movement of the door leaf and, as a rule, is 20 mm wider than the thickness of the door. The depth of the niche should correspond to the width of the sash hidden in it with a small margin (5-10 cm).

Don't forget to provide space and make a frame to hide the sliding mechanism. This will require either increasing the height of the opening or using a shorter door leaf.

Next, you should mount the slider mechanism and install the sliding door similarly to the recommendations above. The only difference is that the guide profile does not need to be attached to the spacer or bracket, but directly in the middle and along the top of the slope of the door opening or support beam.

Checking, adjusting and fine-tuning the operation of sliding doors is carried out before covering the wall with plasterboard, since then, without dismantling the covering, this will be impossible.

Then handles and locks are mounted and attached to the frame facing material and implement finishing walls

Installation of a finished pencil case for a door

Specialized stores offer comprehensive solutions for sliding systems, including both a sliding mechanism and a built-in block. Its installation is almost identical to the installation of a conventional door frame, and comes down to rigidly fastening the finished pencil case to the wall or installing it in the doorway, observing the strict positioning of all components of the kit. As a rule, fastening is carried out using polyurethane foam, having a small expansion. Then they install the guides, door leaf, handles, lock, drywall and the list goes on.

Don’t make yourself an idol: what to expect from sliding systems

When installing sliding doors, it is possible to use two sliding systems, which, located parallel, support the door leaf from above and below. This installation method allows you to withstand significant loads and is used, as a rule, when the door weighs significantly (more than 80 kg). However, for high-quality sliding in such a system, ideal symmetry of both guides is required, and the bottom rail, in order to avoid stumbling when walking, will have to be recessed into the floor, positioned at the same level with the floor covering. In addition, the inevitable debris and small objects that get into the lower profile can easily damage the rollers and damage the entire opening mechanism.

Sliding door systems require an ideal wall surface and high precision during installation; they are less reliable than classic swing doors, are noisier when opening, and protect the room less well from extraneous odors and sounds.

However, careful installation, application quality mechanisms sliding, installation of additional seals at joints - are able to largely eliminate these shortcomings, and thanks to the high ergonomics and stylish design, sliding door systems have earned recognition and are widely used throughout the world.

Interior design

Today, one of the most popular decorative techniques is the use of sliding doors in the interior. This article will discuss how to install it yourself.

Sliding doors have become very popular in last years, they are installed even where there is no need to save space. People are attracted by their functionality and ability to give the interior elegant look and mobility. Therefore, today the installation of interior sliding doors is a fairly popular service. However, this work does not require any special knowledge, usage skills construction tools or physical strength. You can install it yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before you decide to make and, you need to carefully study all the pros and cons. To begin with, it should be noted that such structures are, perhaps, the best option For small rooms, where installation of ordinary ones is difficult and impractical.

Moreover, this great option for lovers of unconventional interior solutions.

So, here is a list of obvious advantages:

  • Allows you to significantly save space;
  • The doors open easily, without effort;
  • Such models can be quite easily automated;
  • They do not close or slam when exposed to drafts;
  • In most cases, no thresholds are required.

These are positive aspects that speak in favor of using the products of this type.

However, to be objective, it is necessary to talk about the disadvantages:

Varieties and designs

The designs we have today differ in appearance. But those who want to know how to make a sliding door themselves should take into account that their design remains the same in all cases, and consists of a door leaf, guides and a roller mechanism.

The operating principle is also the same for all types of sliding doors.

Essential elements

The rollers move along guides, and the roller mechanism itself is attached to the door. The number of rollers may vary depending on the model.

In addition to the main elements listed above, the sliding door design also includes decorative panels(they are designed to close the mechanism), various fittings, extensions and trim (see).

Main types of products

Among the variety of models, the main, most common types can be identified:

  • radius;
  • sliding;
  • sliding;
  • one, two, three and four doors;
  • cascading.

Sliding doors - the design is quite unusual, therefore they require special fittings belonging to a certain type.

Handles and locks are noticeably different from conventional fittings. Characteristic feature handles for this type of door is that they are recessed into the leaf. This design is naturally not accidental - the handles recessed into the door leaf do not interfere with the normal functioning of the door system.

The same goes for locks - they are not quite ordinary. Locks for this type of door operate on the principle of vertical latching.

In most cases, the fittings are sold complete with a sliding door. However, if the question arises about how to make sliding products yourself, when purchasing fittings it is better to consult with specialists or select elements by catalog number.

Mechanisms

Obviously, sliding doors get their name due to the principle by which they open and close. The type of structure, the material from which the canvas is made, and the number of sashes determine which roller mechanism and guides will need to be selected.

Various types of interior sliding doors have different weight, and therefore create an excellent load on the entire structure as a whole. For example, if we compare a double-leaf structure made of glass and the same door made of MDF, then, obviously, the latter will weigh much less. This means that to install it it will be necessary to select a lighter and simpler mechanism.

Installation of some types of interior sliding doors requires special attention to the choice of guides and roller mechanism. This is especially true for such types of doors as accordion, coupe and cascading sliding doors. Cascade doors require the installation of two roller mechanisms for each blade and, accordingly, guides with two gutters.

When installing compartments and cascade products, you need to pay attention to the following point: for each leaf, one groove must be installed in the guides.

When learning how to make a structure with your own hands, you should remember that the reliability of the structure depends mainly on the reliability of the roller mechanism and guides. To ensure reliability, some types of doors (for example, glass) require the installation of two guides (one at the top and one at the bottom).

What needs to be provided for the construction of structures

If you purchase the door itself separately from the sliding mechanism, be sure to consider total weight canvases Based on this, the necessary minimal amount rollers - the main structural elements that bear the weight of the door and allow it to move easily.

On a canvas weighing 30-35 kg, it is enough to install two rollers, and they will easily cope with their task. For heavier ones, the number of rollers should be increased.

If you are planning sliding interior doors - installation into a plasterboard partition - then at the stage of creating an opening in it, lay a strong wooden beam above it, to which the guide will subsequently be attached.

Important! Direct installation should be carried out after completion of all rough work and installation flooring. In the case of a false wall, a metal guide is installed into it before facing it with plasterboard.

Preparation for installation

Before purchasing a door, you need to decide on its size. To do this, use a tape measure to measure the opening in length and width and add 5-6 cm to the obtained values. If it is not possible to purchase ready-made canvases of a given size, they can be made to order or cut in a specialized workshop.

Attention! When installing doors not in the opening, but as sliding partition indoors, the height of the canvas is calculated based on the ceilings minus the thickness load-bearing beam and designs.

If sliding elements are purchased separately from the canvas, use the help of a specialist when choosing them, since you can determine required amount rollers are quite difficult.

You will need:

  • Rail guide, the length of which should be equal to twice the width of the opening (or a little more).
  • Rollers with carriages.
  • Stoppers(rubber shock absorbers) or plugs inserted into the ends of the guide.
  • Anchor bolts for attaching a load-bearing beam to the wall.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • – handles, locks.

All this can be purchased as a set or separately - at construction markets and in large stores. Buy everything you need there decorative finishing opening: racks for the box, platbands (see), additions, finishing nails.

In addition, you will need a strong beam square section 50x50 mm, the length of which is equal to the metal rail guide.

As well as a set of construction tools:

  • Construction level and plumb line
  • Roulette
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Chisel (if you have one) milling machine, no chisel needed)

It remains to make sure that the opening slopes are vertical in order to begin installation - the interior sliding doors are ready for installation.

Marking

In order for the assembly of products with your own hands to be correct, you must take this stage very seriously. You may need a diagram, because the sliding mechanism is not so simple.

There are two ways to make markings for installing a load-bearing beam:

  1. Measure the height of the door with a tape measure. Add to it the size of the gap between the door leaf and the floor (10–15 mm) and the height of the guide with the assembled roller mechanism. Place the resulting size on the wall above the opening at two or three points and draw a straight horizontal line through them.
  2. Place the canvas against the opening, placing a lining under it required thickness, and draw a line on the wall along the top edge of the door. Set the height of the sliding mechanisms with the guide upward from it.

Attention! To prevent the retractable structure from moving arbitrarily in one direction or another after installation, make sure that the marking line is located strictly horizontally. Use a building level for this.

Installing the guide

Depending on the design features, the guide can be attached in different ways:

  • Dowels directly to the wall.
  • To the bottom edge wooden beam, mounted on the wall.
  • On special brackets.
  • To the ceiling.

Regardless of the installation method, the upper horizontal plane of the guide should be located along the marking line, and the gutter should be positioned in relation to the wall so that the moving canvas does not touch its protrusions, irregularities or elements.

Attention! The length of the guide should be twice the width of the opening plus a few centimeters of spare space.

Installation of sliding mechanisms

After you have fixed the guide, assemble the roller carriages, insert the mounting bolts into them that will connect them to the door leaf, and start assembled mechanisms into the guide.

Install staples on the upper end of the canvas, retreating a few millimeters from each side of the edge. The number of staples must correspond to the number of roller mechanisms. For regular wooden structure Or two pieces are enough.

Installation of the canvas

Place the door under the guide, lift it and screw the carriage mounting bolts into the brackets. This work is easier to do with two people. To install the product in a horizontal position, tighten the bolts and check the level.

To fix it in a vertical position, a leash is screwed to the floor near one of the walls of the opening - a lower guide in the form of a roller or knife. It is inserted into a groove in the lower end of the leaf and does not allow the door to deviate to the side when moving.

To install interior doors you will need 2 people Doors play a huge role in the arrangement of an apartment. Interior passages are closed with such structures to more clearly divide the house into functional areas. Since the construction industry does not stand still, new finishing options are constantly being invented doorways. One of the most popular ways to design entrance blocks is sliding doors. Read on to learn how to install them yourself.

What is included in the set of interior doors

Installing sliding interior doors is a responsible undertaking. It is very important that the door kit you purchase contains all the necessary components. If it turns out that the set was missing some element, then you will not be able to install the structure in the doorway yourself, and it will be very difficult to prove to the seller that he sold you without important fittings. That's why it's so important to know what's included in your sliding door kit.

Before installing interior doors, you should study the purpose of its components.

What is included in the sliding door kit:

  1. Door leaf a mandatory component of any sliding set. It can be made of wood, aluminum, plastic or glass. Do not forget to check this item when purchasing, it must be intact, without damage or defects.
  2. Guides. Depending on the design of the door, there may be two or one of them in a set. They are usually made of metal. The most the best material These are considered to be guides whose design has a built-in tongue that prevents the rollers from jumping out.
  3. Rollers, thrust mechanisms and lower leash. The door rides on rollers on guides; they can have bearings or do without them. Thrust mechanisms limit position open door to the desired point. The lower leash provides the canvas with a softer glide, preventing it from shaking and swaying.
  4. Accessories not always included. It happens that handles and locks have to be purchased separately.
  5. Door frame usually made of the same material as the canvas.

When purchasing a sliding door installation kit, be sure to check that all necessary elements. If something is missing, you can point it out to the seller in time. The instructions that should be included with your purchase will help you check whether the set of sliding doors from a specific manufacturer is filled correctly.

Door guides

Before you begin directly installing the sliding door, it is worth talking separately about the guides. It is their location that dictates how the doors will open.

There are enough ways to install guides a large number of. You can choose one of them depending on your own preferences and the size of the room where such a system will be installed.

Door guides may vary in design, size and quality

So, a guide installed above the doorway allows the canvas to ride along the wall. If the rail is mounted in a box, then you will get a hidden door system, which, when opened, will slide along a guide, like on a skid, into the box.

Three main types of guide installation:

  1. Most often, the guides are attached to the top. This installation method reduces the risk of accidental system failure.
  2. The guide located below can be broken by stepping on it with your foot. Therefore, this method is used very rarely, in individual design projects.
  3. The combined fastening of guides is considered the most reliable. In this case, the rails are attached both above and below. This design can support a canvas with a fairly large weight.

If this is your first time installing sliding interior doors yourself, we advise you to choose one of three door arrangement methods. In this case, the guide should run as a continuous sheet. In this case, you will be able to avoid many mistakes, and you will definitely not ruin your expensive door system.

Installation of sliding doors

When all the materials have been purchased, you can begin to install the door in its place. However, first you need to prepare the doorway. To do this, the old door structure is dismantled and the opening is restored to its proper appearance.

To make it easy to install interior doors, and finished work made you happy long years, choose materials only from trusted manufacturers. One of the best manufacturers, producing sliding doors, is the Italian company “LOID”.

You should choose sliding doors based on the design of the room and its size

You also need to immediately install the door frame. It should be at a distance of one cm from the clean floor.

How to properly install a sliding interior door yourself:

  1. From the top edge of the box, a distance equal to the width of the guide is measured upward. At this height, a beam is attached, the length of which is equal to the length of the guide. In this case, the middle of the beam should be located at the level of the border of the door frame where the leaf will move when opening.
  2. A guide is attached to the beam using hardware. It should pass strictly through the center of the beam.
  3. If necessary, you can mount the bottom rail on the floor. In order not to damage the floor or the sliding system, the lower guide is protected by a threshold.
  4. Assembling the door leaf involves hanging rollers on its upper end on which the structure will move. A groove is knocked out at the bottom end of the door (usually it is already in the door).
  5. To limit the opening of the door, special flags are attached to the floor with self-tapping screws. They will not allow the canvas to go beyond the extreme point.
  6. A handle and locking mechanism are installed on the door that has not yet been hung. This must be done so carefully as not to damage the canvas.
  7. The door rollers are inserted into the guides. The door movement is checked. If everything is in order, rubber stops are inserted into the guides.
  8. On last stage All structural components are decorated. They close the door frame and the beam with the top guide.

The described door installation option is quite simple. Unlike installing a system that fits into a pencil case, even a non-professional can handle the assembly of such a structure.

Self-installation of a double interior door

Installing a double interior door does not take much more time. Of course there are different variants installation of such structures, but if you are not a professional, then it is better to choose the simplest of them.

Before installing interior doors, you should watch a training video with a master class

Double sliding doors look good only in rooms big size, where you can make a wide doorway.

Double sliding doors are installed using the same technology as a conventional compartment design. However, you will have to install the rollers on not one, but two canvases. The doorway for this design option should be slightly smaller than the width of the two panels. The track should also be at least twice the width of the two doors.

Professional installation of sliding interior doors (video)

Installing sliding doors has its own nuances and difficulties. However, if you approach the installation responsibly, you can do it yourself.

Few people want to have an apartment or house without interior doors. But almost everyone has thought about which doors between rooms are best to install. So that it’s both beautiful and functional, and doesn’t take up space.

This is exactly what sliding interior doors are - a slider (diverging, sliding, sliding to the side (into a wall, opening, pencil case) in one plane, i.e. doors that ride on rollers, slides on rails).

Sliding interior doors - pros and cons

From a constructive point of view, there are two types of interior doors:

In this case, the door leaf is hung on awnings. Swing doors traditional and well proven. They give the room a rich look, but take up a lot of space, which leads to inconvenience in implementing interior solutions.

2. Sliding interior doors.

A modern solution that allows for more efficient use of room space.

Sliding doors are divided into two subtypes:

Built into the wall(in a pencil case) and working on the compartment principle.

Sliding doors hidden in the wall (sliding into the wall, recessed into the wall) have a mechanism that allows the door to be moved parallel to the wall.

The operating principle of sliding doors built into the wall is as follows: rollers are installed on the door leaf, and guides are installed on the doorway (the door will go into the wall) or above the doorway (the door will go behind the wall).

The rollers move along the guides, freeing the doorway for passage.

.

They consist of small lamellas (wood or plastic), which, when moved, can significantly save space.

The principle of the device is interesting, but cheap options are not practical. Instructions for assembling and installing accordion doors are supplied by the manufacturer.

Advantages of sliding doors:

  • unusual, non-standard solution;
  • absence of blind areas and problems with furniture placement;
  • safety. The owner of sliding doors is not in danger of hitting the corner of the door in an unlit room (however, you need to be careful, children can stick their fingers between the wall and the door);
  • such a door will not open with a draft.

Disadvantages of sliding doors:

  • high installation cost. But by doing the work yourself, the costs are kept to a minimum and are no higher than when installing swing doors;
  • poor insulation. The absence of obstacles to the penetration of noise, light, and odors can be eliminated by installing a felt gasket on the end of the door;
  • difficulty in caring for the pencil case, i.e. the place where the sliding door goes when hidden design. This problem can be solved in two ways. Using a vacuum cleaner with the attachment removed, remove debris from the pencil case. The second option, more radical, involves removing drywall from one side of the wall. It should be noted that in a residential building, the vacuum cleaner copes with the task perfectly;
  • difficulty of repair. When installing a sliding door yourself, you can buy several rollers in reserve to replace them if necessary.

Mechanism for sliding doors – sliding systems

As you can see, the main difference between sliding doors and swing doors is their functioning mechanism, which determines the door movement options.

Thus, sliding mechanism for interior doors it can be:

1. In-wall (hidden mechanism). As the name suggests, this mechanism allows the door to move inside the wall. The system of such doors must be implemented at the stage of wall construction, because free space is created in the wall - a pencil case for a sliding door. Consequently, the wall becomes thicker by the width of the pencil case. This somewhat reduces the usable area, but it frees up the walls, near which you can install furniture, hang pictures or place flowers.

2. External (open mechanism). This sliding system for doors can be installed at any time, because does not require rebuilding the wall. In this case, the door moves along guides along the wall. Therefore, you need to leave free space on one or both sides of the wall (depending on the number of sashes and the direction of their movement).

It is worth noting that there are quite a lot of door movement options with an external mechanism (see diagram). This allows you to choose the best method for a particular room. Special attention deserve sliding doors consisting of four leaves. Here interior doors open towards the outside. This is especially important when you need to close a wide doorway or niche.

Guides for sliding doors

The last thing you should consider before you start installing sliding doors is the guide rails (profiles) along which the door moves during operation. They can be placed on top or bottom, or on both sides.

  • top guides. The most popular way. They should be used when the door leaf is light in weight. The guides located at the top last longer and are less susceptible to breakage;
  • bottom guides. Rarely used on their own as they are easily deformed by simply being stepped on. In addition, the runners will need constant cleaning. And a door without an upper support will not slide smoothly;
  • combined. Used when doors are heavy or for smoother opening.

In this article we will look at how to install sliding interior doors with an external sliding mechanism.

1. Material

Knowing everything related to the types and mechanisms of door functioning, you can begin purchasing materials and preparing tools.

We will need:

  1. the door itself (leaf, frame, trim);
  2. accessories (guide profiles (runners), rollers, handles, locks);
  3. timber 50x30 for fastening the guide.
  4. hardware for fastening;
  5. level;
  6. roulette;
  7. hacksaw with fine teeth;
  8. drill;
  9. chisel.

Advice. When the door weighs more than 27 kg. you need to use 4 rollers; for lighter ones, two are enough.

To prevent handles and locks from deforming the wall and damaging the wallpaper when sliding, it is worth installing hidden options, i.e. the ones that crash into the door.

2. Preparation

At this stage, it becomes clear where exactly the door will be installed and in which direction it will open. If two sliding doors are installed side by side, then you need to consider the convenience of opening them.

Advice. Sliding doors can be hung on common long upper runners or hidden in one pencil case. In this case, the width of the pencil case should be sufficient.

Can be dismantled if necessary old door, and the doorway is brought into the desired state and the door frame is installed, taking into account the gap between the door and the finished floor.

Advice. For residential premises the gap should be 10 mm. If the finished floor has not yet been poured (laid), then you need to take into account the height of the screed, leveling and the thickness of the floor covering.

3. Interior doorway

  • We determine the dimensions of the doorway - the height and width of the door are measured.

Advice. It is better to take measurements at several points (top, middle, bottom). The door height can be changed in the closed and open state. This is necessary to take into account possible unevenness on the floor.

  • The beam is installed. To do this, draw a straight line over the top edge of the box. The distance from the box to the line is equal to the width of the guide. The timber is attached exactly to the line. In this case, the middle of the beam should be located above the right side of the interior door frame if the door opens to the right.

Advice. The width of the beam must be sufficient so that after installing the platbands, the door can close freely.

  • Upper guide profiles for sliding doors are installed. The runners are installed on the timber and secured with hardware.

Advice. To check the correct installation of the runners, you need to run a roller over them. When sliding smoothly, you can begin further work. If problems arise, it is better to remove them immediately.

  • The lower runners (rails) are installed. To do this, you can choose one of several options:
  • a part of the subfloor (or parquet, laminate, tile) is selected and the lower guide is inserted there. The lower rollers will move along it;
  • the guide is installed directly on the floor (parquet, laminate), and in order not to destroy it, a threshold is installed;
  • installation of the guide knife. But, since the system of lower guides is rarely used, if necessary, a so-called packet knife is often installed. Its purpose is to hold the door and prevent it from deviating from the given direction of movement.

The threshold-free sliding door system allows the door to operate without destroying the floor covering (there is no need to lay rails). The mechanism works thanks to carriages with rollers on ball bearings, which move along guides with shock absorbers and a bottom liner. The top guide is hidden behind decorative overlay, in the same color as the door.

4. Assembling sliding doors

We hang rollers (roller mechanism) on the upper end of the door.

At the bottom end, at a distance of 15 mm. Holes are drilled from both edges. A groove is selected between them along the entire length. Its width is 2 mm. exceeds the width of the knife. The depth is equal to the height of the knife and is usually 10-18 mm. The part of the end without a groove will act as a natural limiter for the door travel.

5. Installation of fittings for sliding doors

Installation includes installing handles and inserting a lock. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the appearance of the door. This procedure is often entrusted to specialists.

6. Installation of a sliding interior door

The door is installed in the guides. After the door has been moved, limiters (rubber shock absorbers) are inserted into the runners; they will not allow the door to “fall out” of the guides when opening and will soften the stop.

7. Decorative design of sliding doors

To make the doorway look beautiful, you need to close all structural elements. Platbands are used for this. They are installed on door frame and top runners.

But it is not required condition, because often structural elements are an integral part of the solution. For example, when using high-tech or modern style.

The installed door in section will have the appearance shown in the diagram (drawing).

8. Care and operation of sliding doors

To ensure that doors do not create problems during operation, you need to properly care for them. To do this you need:

  • avoid getting water on the door to prevent it from leaking (if the door is made of wood);
  • keep the guides clean. Debris that gets inside the guides will cause the door to be difficult to close;
  • close the door smoothly. Do not close the door with force, this will accelerate the wear of the rollers. In the worst case, the stopper may fall out and the door will “fly” out of the guides;
  • Check the condition of the fittings from time to time. It is easier to replace the rollers in time than to deform the guide profiles over time;

Conclusion

Correct installation of sliding doors between rooms and timely replacement of components is the key to the long-term functioning of any door.
