What paint to paint your wheel rims with your own hands. Repairing and painting car alloy wheels at home

For most motorists who are accustomed to keeping their car in order, a well-groomed interior and appearance of the car will always be one of the criteria by which the owner of the car is judged. And the fact that the car looks impeccable is usually not trifles; in such a car, all parts must be in perfect condition, including the rims.

But it is not always possible to achieve the ideal condition of the disks, because they are the ones responsible for most of the problems on city roads - they are constantly scratched and experience an aggressive reaction. chemicals, which utility workers use to treat roads, require constant maintenance and, in the end, despite all the efforts of the next painting. One of the methods of caring for wheel rims today is painting using modern technologies metal protection, providing not only high-quality coating, but also makes it possible to emphasize the individuality of the car.

Materials for painting wheels

The final result of painting car rims with your own hands largely depends on how correctly the entire work process was organized and what tools and materials were used for this. One of the components of success here is proper preparation discs for applying primer and subsequent layers of paint and varnish. At this stage of work you will usually need the most simple tools and consumables:

  • Metal brush;
  • Sandpaper with varying degrees of grit;
  • Rags;
  • Respiratory protection, safety glasses, gloves;
  • Masking tape, plastic film, paper;
  • Solvent;
  • Putty;
  • Set of spatulas.

For higher and more thorough preparation of the surface of the wheel rims, you can use a power tool with metal brush attachments or sandblasting equipment to remove the old coating, which makes it possible to thoroughly clean the rims down to metal.

During the priming and painting process you will need:

  • Compressor and spray gun;
  • Room with exhaust ventilation for painting;
  • Drying chamber;
  • Painting stand;
  • Industrial hair dryer for drying individual areas.

When working on applying powder coating, in addition, it is necessary to take care of the construction of a drying chamber with the ability to provide an air temperature of 250-300 degrees for 4-6 hours for polymerization of the powder coating.

Modern car care products, including wheel rims, with constant use can maintain the color and integrity of the rim paint coating, but after a certain time, it is still better to repaint the rims completely, without spending additional costs on partial repairs of the coating.

For self-application For paint coatings, conventional automotive paints and enamels and high-tech coatings are mainly used. Most often used for painting wheels:

  • Acrylic paints;
  • Nitro enamels;
  • Liquid rubber.

Each type of coating is successfully used when painting wheel rims independently. However, when choosing the type of paint coating, it is necessary to take into account the properties of the paints and the features of the application technology.

Acrylic car enamels The most common today and widely used for painting body parts and rims. They are produced both in the form of ready-to-use compositions in aerosol cans, and in the form of separate color forms of paints that require further mixing to obtain desired color. When dry, the paints form a durable film that is resistant to external influences. Painting with acrylic paints today is the most common and easiest type of work to master on your own. Paints on acrylic base Suitable for all types of discs.

Once popular nitro enamels Today they are used mainly in the form of aerosol cans. Popularity of this species car paints lies in the ease and speed of work. The paints are sold ready-made, easy to apply to the surface, and dry quickly under normal conditions. This paint is usually used for express painting and is suitable for all types of rims. However, this paint holds up worse than others.

Liquid rubber relatively the new kind protective coating. The main form of release is ready-to-use paint in aerosol cans. Easy to apply to the surface, provides reliable adhesion, excellent resistance to external influences. The downside of the paint is that it is difficult to select the required color, since it is sold in cylinders in finished composition. Suitable for painting all types of discs.

– a new high-tech type of coating that provides reliable protection metal and at the same time excellent appearance. Powder paint makes it possible to create any color composition, including using several color transitions. The disadvantage of this dyeing technology is the need to use special equipment and great care when working. In addition, it is not recommended to use powder technology for application to light alloy cast wheels, especially from unknown manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom.

Cast wheels made of light metal alloys, like other types of automobile wheel rims, require painting. During operation, the metal of the structure is constantly exposed to precipitation, harmful emissions and aggressive chemicals for treating the road surface. In addition, the properties of the metal are affected by scratches, chips and cracks. Painting such discs allows you to avoid metal destruction due to corrosion and significantly extend their service life.

Alloy wheels

For painting alloy wheels It is recommended to use acrylic enamels and liquid rubber , powder painting is applicable only for low-temperature compositions, the heating of which for polymerization is carried out at a temperature of 200-250 degrees.

The process of preparing for painting is carried out in the following sequence:

The painting process is conventionally divided into the stages of preparation, application of primer, painting with a pigment composition and final varnishing. All these operations must be done in a dust-free room with excellent exhaust ventilation and good lighting.

Before starting work, the discs are placed on a painting stand or hung on a wire so as to gain maximum access to all surfaces to be painted.

Preparation for priming and the priming process itself is carried out as follows:

Coloring is carried out in 1-2 layers depending on the desired result, while:

  • Coloring is done in 2-3 passes from a distance of 40-50 cm from the disk, in the direction from top to bottom;
  • When painting, the spray gun or can must be held so as to follow the relief of the disc and achieve maximum coverage surface layer.

Applying paint to a car wheel

Attention!

When painting discs First, the interior surface is painted , and after that the front side, this is due to the fact that paint drips from inside in any case, appear through the holes and windows of the disk onto the front side. Before painting the front side, it is recommended to carefully remove any drips with a clean rag soaked in solvent and then continue the painting process.

After the base coat of paint has dried, 2 protective layers of varnish are applied on top of it. The varnish application technology is similar to the painting technology with a mandatory break for drying each layer.

Car wheel before and after painting

It is recommended to dry in drying chamber at least 2 days, until the last layer of varnish has completely dried. All this time the disc must be on the stand; removing it and putting it down is not recommended. After the varnish has dried, it is recommended to put the tire on the rim no earlier than 24 hours later.

Stamped wheels are most popular as the main wheels for installing winter tires, which is why they bear the entire burden of operating a car in winter conditions. Before starting work, it is recommended to remove the tires, level the deformed areas, carry out alignment and roll them to the desired shape on the machine.

Stamped discs are mainly made from cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel using the hot stamping method; this technology requires the mandatory application of a protective coating. For stamped disks, any painting technology is acceptable, since the metal of the structure will not deform when heated to a temperature of 250-300 degrees when powder painted.

Stamped discs

A special feature of painting stamped discs is the preparation process, during which, after restoring the shape of the disc, it is necessary to:

In preparation for painting:

Painting with acrylic paint and liquid rubber is carried out using a similar technology - painting with a spray gun and from a can, first on the inside, and then on the front. The use of the powder method requires additional equipment– a spray gun for applying powder paint, an apparatus for electrostatic spraying, a drying chamber with the ability to maintain a temperature from 180 to 300 degrees, depending on the composition of the powder paint.

Application acrylic paint or liquid rubber is carried out in the following order:

  1. At the stand, the results of the primer are inspected, flaws are removed and the entire surface is degreased again;
  2. From a distance of 50-60 cm, all areas are painted with 2-3 passes of a spray gun or spray bottle - first side surface, the inner surface and then the front surface of the disk;
  3. The stand is placed in a drying chamber for 24-36 hours until completely dry.

Painting a stamped disc

Varnishing is carried out in 2 layers, provided that the surface is completely dry.

Forged wheels, unlike stamped ones, last longer difficult process manufacturing, during which the required shape of the wheel is formed by forging, while the structure of the metal changes, it becomes more durable and elastic. Such products allow any painting method, including high-temperature treatment during powder painting.

Forged wheels

When painting forged wheels, it is necessary to carry out the following operations during the preparation and painting process:

When painting wheels without removing tires, the preparation process has its own characteristics:

  • The disc is washed together with the tire;
  • The nipple and tire near the disk are sealed before starting work. masking tape;
  • Mechanical cleaning of the surface, puttying and grinding are done with the utmost care so as not to damage the tire;
  • Installation on a painting stand must also take into account the weight of the tire;
  • In the drying chamber Maximum temperature should not be higher than 40 degrees.

Pasting tires on wheels before painting wheels

In extreme conditions, when not only the tires are not removed, but the wheels remain on the car, it is recommended that all operations be done in a place protected from the wind in dry weather with normal air humidity and a temperature of at least 20 degrees. It is recommended to close the machine body plastic film and secure with tape. Tire rubber can be closed playing cards, inserting them with one edge between the rubber and the rim of the disc along the entire circumference. In this case, the coloring will not be of very high quality, but the effect of freshness will last for 3-4 weeks.

How to paint wheels yourself

Unfortunately, domestic car enthusiasts are not always able to purchase new alloy wheels. Most often you have to buy used ones, and not always their condition can add the necessary attractiveness to the car. But this does not bother car owners. They know: the main thing is that there is no mechanical damage, and painting alloy wheels does not require large investments and is quite possible at home. And indeed it is.

In the very simple case, painting car rims with your own hands only requires the presence of a simple tool, the required material, and most importantly, desire and patience. And sometimes, this can be done without even removing the rubber.

Painting options

The most common currently are following methods painting of car rims:

  • Aerosol painting.
  • Painting with acrylic paints using a compressor.
  • Painting with liquid rubber.
  • Powder coating of wheels.

The last method is used quite rarely, since painting the rims powder paint, it’s almost impossible on your own. This is due to the need for special, expensive equipment.

All other options are quite suitable for painting alloy wheels with your own hands, so each of them should be considered in more detail.

Painting car wheels with acrylic paints

Today, this method of painting alloy wheels is the most popular. Working with acrylic paints does not require special skills, and necessary tool found in almost any garage.

Necessary materials and equipment

So, to paint wheel rims you will need:

Preparatory work

First of all, the wheels need to be cleaned of dirt and washed well. After this, it is necessary to clean their surface from old paint, especially in those places where it began to lag behind the disk. The easiest way to do this at home is with a drill with a special attachment.

But the technology for painting wheels involves not only restoring the paintwork, but also partial restoration surfaces. All existing large scratches and chips are sanded using sandpaper in two steps, first with a coarse abrasive, then with a fine one. This will avoid rubbing marks. If large defects remain on the surface of the wheels after grinding, they need to be puttied.

On final stage preparatory work, the disc is cleaned of abrasive residues and thoroughly washed with water. There is one more nuance. If you intend to paint the car's rims without removing the rubber, then you must first seal the surface of the tire using masking tape and newspapers. The result should look like it is shown in the photo.

Padding

Painting wheel rims is impossible without first priming them. The starting layer will allow you to apply the base paint more evenly, and it will adhere better.

The surface must be dried before application. construction hairdryer. This should be done very conscientiously. Just one drop of water can cause a paint defect, which will ultimately affect the appearance of the wheels and their service life.

After this, the surface must be degreased with a solvent. For ease of priming and painting, the disc is suspended using a piece of strong and soft wire.

Before priming, it is advisable to heat it with a hair dryer. This will ensure the first layer is even. Application is carried out using a spray gun, from a distance of 25–30 cm. An important point is the consistency of the primer. If it is too liquid, leaks are inevitable.

Under no circumstances should you apply it immediately thick layer soil. To obtain the appropriate quality, it is better to do this in 3-4 doses. Each subsequent layer can be applied only after the previous one has dried. Typically this takes 30 minutes. You can speed up the process somewhat by using a hairdryer.

Painting

After the primer has dried, you can begin painting the alloy wheels. It is also carried out in several layers. Therefore, it is very important to take your time and let each one dry completely. The paint should also not be too liquid. You can check its quality by applying a test layer to a suitable metal product. Properly prepared paint should not leave streaks.

To obtain maximum quality, the number of layers must be at least three. Special attention need to be given hard to reach places, as a rule, they stain the worst. If you don’t have a compressor, you can paint the wheels with a spray can filled with paint. However High Quality this is difficult to achieve. Therefore, this method is used mainly for painting stamped discs. You can clearly see the process of painting car wheels with acrylic paint in the following video.

Liquid rubber: advantages and self-painting

Nowadays, treating wheels with liquid rubber is becoming increasingly popular. This material has a lot of advantages, and above all these:

  • A large number of creative shades, however, it is impossible to paint the wheels in chrome.
  • Wear resistance is no worse than with powder coating of discs.
  • Hides all scratches and chips.
  • There is no need to contact specialists; you can easily paint it yourself.

It is worth noting that big drawback is the price, but it pays off with high quality.

Necessary materials

To paint wheels, the following tools and materials are required:

  • Raw rubber. Unlike regular paint, it is better to use spray cans; the quality will hardly suffer.
  • Solvent.
  • Gloves and respirator.

During winter operation All parts of a car, including wheel rims, are highly exposed to the reagents that are sprinkled on the roadway. From such exposure, the paint gradually cracks, peels off, and after a few years the discs lose their attractiveness. This is especially true for stamped discs made of steel, on which traces of corrosion also appear. What to do in such cases? The discs are essentially in perfect condition, throwing them away and buying new ones, no matter what, it’s basically not advisable from the point of view of financial costs. The best way out is the restoration of paintwork. Even if you turn to a specialized workshop for this service, this operation will still cost less than buying new disks. But you can do it differently, you can do everything yourself. Moreover, this does not require any special materials or special skills or abilities; you will learn everything along the way.

In order to paint rims on a car with your own hands, you need to do preparatory work, and also choose paint material.

Which paint to choose

Today, two types of paint are used to restore discs:

  • Powder;
  • Acrylic.

The powder composition has certain advantages, for example, paints of this type are more durable and resistant to mechanical stress. In addition, when producing alloy wheels at manufacturing plants, powder coating is used. However, despite these advantages, the technology for applying such paint is quite complex and requires the use specialized equipment(heat chamber and sandblasting). The fact is that dry powder is applied to the disc, which is fixed on the surface under the influence of high temperatures. There is another disadvantage of powder paint - when using it, you can only paint the entire product, and not its individual parts.

When using an acrylic composition, car enthusiasts will not have to face such problems. Acrylic paint has a brighter and more saturated color and palette, so you can choose the most suitable shade that will match the color of the car body. Painting car wheels using acrylic composition also has disadvantages. These include low resistance to environmental influences.

Based on the above, when deciding how to paint your rims, it is better to give preference to acrylic compounds. You can find this kind of paint in any specialty store. When choosing a manufacturer, remember - it is better to purchase paint and varnish from the same company.

IN Lately For painting not only rims, but also body parts, another covering material began to be used - liquid rubber. By cost, number of shades and mechanical strength it is comparable to acrylic paint. It is even easier to apply than acrylic. The most famous brand is liquid rubber "Plasti Dip".

In addition to paints and varnishes, you will need other materials.

Necessary equipment and materials

If you have chosen powder method painting, then first of all you will need a sandblasting machine, which is used to thoroughly clean the worn disc of old paint, dirt and dust. In addition, with the help of this device you can perfectly level the surface of the product.

Advice! Sandblasting can be replaced a regular drill with various abrasive attachments.

You will also need a heat chamber, which is necessary for “baking” the powder paint. It is impossible to replace this type of equipment at home, so you will have to fork out more or still use a cheaper painting method.

Painting car wheels with acrylic paint is simple and cheap way bring old disks back to life. To do this you will need to prepare:

  • Brush;
  • Washing powder or regular dish detergent;
  • Sandpaper of different abrasiveness (from 200 to 600);
  • Automotive finishing putty;
  • Several cans of primer;
  • Can of varnish (transparent);
  • Can of solvent 646;
  • Protective gloves, respirator and goggles.

As you can see, the second method requires much less financial costs, especially since most of from this list you already have in your garage. After everything is ready, you can start working directly.

Car wheel painting technology

First of all, make sure that the room in which you will work is well ventilated. Acrylic and varnish are not the best best combination for good health. Wear goggles and gloves to avoid chemical burns and remove the wheels from the vehicle.

In order not to stain the tire, it must be sealed with masking tape along the rim. The adhesive tape must be applied as tightly as possible to the edge of the rim while simultaneously tucking it into the gap between the rim and the tire.

There is another option, you can remove the tires from the rim completely. If you are afraid to do this yourself, then you can contact a car service; this service will cost you little. Next, it is necessary to prepare the surface of the disks for subsequent processing.

Surface preparation

Use a brush and detergent to thoroughly remove old paint and varnish from the surface. To degrease the disc and remove paint residues, use a solvent or anti-silicone.

Advice! To get rid of worn paintwork in hard-to-reach places, use an awl or a thin screwdriver.

After this, go over the surface with sandpaper. At this stage, there is no need to rush; it is better to sand every millimeter of the disc for a long time and thoroughly. Use coarse sandpaper first and then last stage- the smallest. The surface to be treated must be periodically watered with water to remove any remaining sanded material and to better polish the disc.

Advice! It’s also not worth cleaning discs with fanaticism, since minor roughness and cracks will in any case hide layers of paint and varnish.

Of course, the old disk will have numerous chips, dents and other defects, which can be eliminated using automotive putty. When it's dry, go over the surface again with fine sandpaper and pour water on the disc.

Primer

The degreased and cleaned surface must be primed. To do this, you need to start applying the primer first to the inner surface of the product, and then move on to the outer part.

Advice! While spraying, shake the primer canister periodically.

To ensure that the repair (painting) of discs is carried out efficiently, try not to rush. The primer must be applied evenly, while holding the container with liquid at a distance of 25-30 cm from the surface. After you have applied the primer, let the disc dry and repeat the procedure (2-3 coats will be enough). In order not to wait long after each application of primer, you can use a regular hair dryer. In any case, it is better to start painting the wheels only the next day.

Painting and varnishing

Before using varnish and paint, carefully read the instructions for use of these materials, as drying time for liquids may vary depending on the manufacturer.

Dried and primed diks must be placed on polyethylene so that during painting, dust and dirt do not stick to them. The technology for applying paint is the same as for priming - we start from the inside of the product and then move on to outer part. Apply 2-3 layers of paint, leaving the surface to dry for 15 minutes after each procedure. After that, wait 20-25 minutes and use the varnish. After the first application of varnish, it is necessary to check the surface of the discs for unevenness. If you find them, then go over them with fine sandpaper. Next, all that remains is to apply the final layer of varnish and wait until the product is completely dry (6-7 days). This completes the restoration of the discs.

In custody

Now you know how to paint wheel rims with your own hands. As you can see, this process does not take much time, and the money is several times cheaper than at a car dealership. The main thing is not to allow dust to settle on the newly painted surface, as this will greatly spoil the appearance of the products. In all other respects, just work calmly and carefully and the result will please you.

Regular driving on uneven roads and unpaved surfaces leads to loss of appearance auto disks. First of all, this is due to the fact that when moving, small stones, crushed stones and other materials get into them, leading to various scratches, chips and peeling paint.

To eliminate these problems, you need to know how to paint rims yourself without the intervention of professional car painters.

In addition, such a process will not only restore the original appearance of the elements, but also create additional protection for them. Before moving on to painting, it is necessary to analyze the types of paints and varnishes.

Types of car paints

Powder

The paint and varnish material is applied using a device such as a spray gun. Previously, old paint particles are removed from the wheel product using abrasive materials. After which the surface is leveled and prepared for painting.

This method is not suitable for DIY painting due to use special devices and thermal chamber. In addition, such a coloring procedure can cost a decent amount.

Acrylic

This type of paint can be applied to any base using a simple spray can. The disc is first cleaned with sandpaper, thoroughly washed, dried and painted. After drying, it is varnished to add shine.

Tools and materials for DIY painting

Any process of painting a car part, including a wheel rim, requires a set of various materials:

  • abrasives (sandpaper);
  • special brushes with metal and plastic bristles;
  • household chemicals: detergents and solvent;
  • finishing putty;
  • primer;
  • dye;

In addition, you will need protective equipment: rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator.

Preparatory work before painting yourself

After drying, it must be treated with a steel brush and sandpaper to remove the old paint. The prepared car disk must be perfectly clean, without any rust residue or peeling paint.

After processing, it is purged using a compressor. You can use a pump or fan as improvised means. After blowing, degrease the surface using a regular clean rag and solvent.

If the wheel rim has scratches, chips or other damage, it must be filled with putty. Automotive putty will hide minor defects and will eventually form a smooth coating. You will also need a spatula and hardener for this process.

Take the putty with a spatula and add a small amount of hardener. Mix thoroughly and apply ready-made composition for visible defects of the wheel product.

After drying, sand the surface and, if necessary, repeat the operations until the disc becomes smooth. At the end of this process, we use a grinder and a sanding disc. We carry out surface treatment and bring it to perfect condition.

Wheel rim primer

On next stage Preparatory work is carried out by priming. To perform the procedure, degrease the clean, sanded surface of the disc using a solvent. 4-5 minutes after drying, we begin to apply the primer.

Take a spray bottle or a can and begin to evenly apply the primer to the disc. It is advisable to prime at a distance to prevent drips on wheeled products.

As a rule, the primer is applied at a distance of 15-20 cm from the surface of the disc. If you maintain this distance and apply it evenly, the surface will be perfectly smooth without streaks.

After applying the first coat of primer, the disk must dry thoroughly. At the next stage we use soft sandpaper with a grain size of 600-800 and treat the surface dry or with water.

The primer is removed in such a way that the surface has no roughness, but becomes perfectly smooth. If, after removing it, small defects remain, the operation must be repeated. Then we let the wheel rim dry and prepare it for the painting process.

It is extremely important that the room in which paint work will be carried out has a ventilated system. As alternative option Painting can be done outside in calm weather. The surface of the disc must be completely dry so that the paint sits evenly on it without drips.

The final stage of painting the disc

To achieve maximum resistance to anti-corrosion effects, it is recommended to purchase paints and varnishes from one manufacturer. The process of applying acrylic paint is practically no different from priming the surface.

If a compressor is used for painting, then open a can of acrylic paint, fill the spray bottle about halfway and add 1/3 of the solvent. Mix thoroughly and check the quality of the resulting material for metal sheet or other subject.

Then we begin painting, applying the material evenly to the disk surface, keeping a distance of up to 20 cm. After finishing, let it dry and proceed to applying varnish.

If you don’t have a compressor and a spray gun, you can use a regular bottle of acrylic paint. Before applying, cover automotive parts and body elements with masking tape to protect them from paint. Shake the can thoroughly and apply evenly to the surface of the product.

On a note! After the first application of paint, as a rule, small streaks form on the disc. Therefore, to evenly smooth the surface, it is recommended to apply paints and varnishes in three layers to achieve maximum durability.

After the disk has dried, evenly apply a small amount of varnish to it. Let it dry for one hour. The applied paint material becomes durable and dries completely only after 24 hours. To add extra shine, use polish.

Painting of alloy wheels is required according to various reasons. Here are the most common ones.

  1. From time to time, chips, small and large scratches appear on the discs. The reasons for this may be great amount. It is important to paint the disc in a timely manner to extend its life. Otherwise, very soon you will have to completely change the disk, which will cost several times more than regular painting.
  2. Often, painting alloy wheels with your own hands is required after the end of the winter season. The problem is that there is a lot of salt on the roads in winter. She quickly reacts with paint coating body, corroding it. Saline solution can severely corrode even the base of the disc.
  3. Often, painting wheels yourself may be necessary when buying a car second-hand. Sellers, as a rule, do not bother with this issue. Therefore, the new owner of the car usually has to paint the wheels.

What equipment is needed to paint wheels?

For maximum high-quality painting rims You need to stock up on the following tools and materials:

  • primer;
  • latex gloves;
  • respirator;
  • rags;
  • any sandpaper;
  • good solvent.

You need to decide in advance. Do-it-yourself painting of stamped discs is usually done by one of three types paints.

  1. Powder paint produced on a completely dry basis polymer material. This type of coloring is the most durable. Powder coating of wheels is more suitable for professional craftsmen. This coating is not suitable for home use, as it is quite difficult to apply. In addition, expensive equipment is required for the highest quality application.
  2. Liquid rubber– this is relatively new and at the same time quite quality material for painting cars. And it is increasingly chosen by both home craftsmen and professionals.
  3. Acrylic paints They are very popular among both professionals and home craftsmen. Spray paint for wheels is different optimal combination prices and quality. Acrylic paints have excellent adhesive properties, due to which they stay on the discs for a long time and protect them from negative impact. These paints are produced in liquid form. They are easy to work with using any spray gun.

When purchasing varnish, paint and solvent, you should give preference to materials from one manufacturer.

When choosing tools for painting, you need to proceed from the end result you want to achieve. You can paint the rims using one aerosol can. If you want to get a result indistinguishable from the work of a master at a service station, you will need additional equipment:

  1. To make painting the discs easier, you will need a special hanger. It is most convenient to make it yourself from ordinary wire.
  2. You can speed up the drying process of the disc coating using a regular household hair dryer. The best effect can be achieved using heat gun.
  3. You can use an electric drill to remove old coating and pockets of rust. Alternatively, you can use sandblasting for this purpose.
  4. For perfect coverage you will need a compressor or spray gun. However, modern paints sprayed from aerosol cans also make it possible to create good coverage. Therefore, without sufficient quantity If you have painting experience, you don’t need to bother with expensive equipment.

How to paint wheels correctly

Below is given step-by-step instruction applying acrylic paint coating. The whole process will take several hours. It is important to follow the sequence of actions, starting with preparation.

  1. Painting car wheels begins with preparing the wheels for coating. You need to remove the tire from the rim. Alternatively, if you don’t want to bother with the tire, you can cover it with polyethylene, which is secured with masking tape.
  2. The discs need to be cleaned of bitumen and dirt that settles tightly on them. For this purpose, you can use any car shampoo or other household detergent.
  3. Then you need to carefully inspect the discs and use a black marker to mark the places of chips, bulges and scratches.
  4. Using an electric drill or sandblasting, you need to remove the old coating and traces of corrosion.
  5. The next step is to degrease the surface of the discs. To do this, you need to wipe them with a rag soaked in solvent.
  6. To remove all existing uneven surfaces of the disc, you need to putty it, and after drying, rub it with sandpaper.

Afterwards, the surface of the disc is degreased again and hung on a wire for subsequent painting.

The paint application process also consists of several stages:

  1. Before painting, you need to thoroughly prime the surface of the disc. The primer is applied in three layers. Each layer must dry completely before applying the next. For this purpose, you can use a heat gun or a household hair dryer.
  2. Next you can apply paint. This is done using a spray can or spray gun. It needs to be sprayed at a distance of 40 to 50 m. In this case, you need to pay maximum attention to hard-to-reach places. Do-it-yourself painting of car rims is carried out in three layers, and each layer must dry completely.
  3. The final step is to apply varnish to the painted surface. Two layers are enough, each of which must dry.
  4. Before starting use, you need to wait 3-4 days from the moment of painting. During this time, all layers will completely harden.
