Lives of the unmercenary martyrs Cosmas and Damian
The holy mu-che-ni-ki-bes-sreb-reni-ki brothers Kos-ma and Da-mi-an lived in the 3rd century after the Birth of Christ in Ri-me, in the per-ri-od go-ne-niy on chri-sti-an, raised-dig-well them-per-ra-to-ra-mi-language-ni-ka-mi. That's when Ka-ri-na and many other people were overcome by the fear of God. Im-per-ra-tor appeared before his brothers and gave his faith in Christ before everyone, and immediately -chil-tse-le-nie. Saints Kos-ma and Da-mi-an were immediately released. After returning to their village near Rome, they continued their previous work pleasing to God.
The achievement of the saints was great, but God would have liked to elevate them even more powerfully through innocent torment. quality They are afraid of the doctor who once taught them. This doctor took them to the mountains and killed them there. Pray to the Lord to grant us, His unworthy servants, His great and rich mercy; Deliver us from all sorrow and illness, for you have naturally received from the Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ the endless grace of healings, for the sake of firm faith, free healing and martyrdom We are yours. November 14 is Memorial Day holy unmercenary doctors Cosmas and Damian Asian. Next to the relics of the holy unmercenary doctors Cosmas and Damian, miracles of healing have occurred for many centuries to this day. Many, many people who, by their faith, turn to Cosmas and Damian, without even distinguishing the origin of the brothers, receive in prayer everything they ask for. The main thing is that the prayer is sincere and persistent, and the heart of the person praying is pure. The holy brothers will certainly hear it and convey it to the Lord along with their fervent and righteous prayer for us, and what we ask will certainly come true.
Cosmas and Damian of Asia were born in Asia Minor, neither the place of their birth nor the time is precisely known, except that they were born no later than the 4th century after R.H. and lived at approximately the same time as the Roman brothers, which is why some historical confusion occurred, as a result of which their hagiography merged with the hagiography of the Roman couple.
We will, however, use the current legend about them, since it is accepted by the Orthodox Church. Saints Cosmas and Damian of Asia were orphaned early. Left a widow in her youth, their mother Theodotia raised her sons in Christian piety. Although her Greek husband was a pagan, Theodotia professed Christianity, the church canonized her as a saint, and on some icons we see her together with her holy sons.
The main occupation of the brothers was medicine, in which they were very successful, and just like many saints who became famous for unmercenary healing, chastity and for acquiring the Holy Spirit, the Lord rewarded them with the gift of healing through prayer. They walked around cities and villages, they themselves went into the houses of the sick and healed them, and also, at the behest of their occupation, they healed sick cattle.
There is a legend according to which they were called to a seriously ill woman named Palladia, whom all the doctors refused to treat, considering her illness to be fatal. Through the prayer of Cosmas and Damian, through her faith, Palladia was cured and, coming to Damian, brought him three eggs as a sign of gratitude. Knowing that healers do not accept any payment, but wanting to express all gratitude for saving her life, the woman asked Damian to accept an offering in the Name of the Life-Giving Trinity - the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Having heard such a wish, the unmercenary doctor could not find any reason for refusal.
Kosma, having learned about his brother’s acceptance of the offering, was very upset, because he decided that his brother had broken his vow. When the time came for him to die, he bequeathed that when this time came for Damian, he would not be buried next to him. The time had come, and people did not know where to bury Damian, not daring to violate the will of Cosmas. And then a miracle happened: a camel, healed earlier by the brothers, came to them and, speaking in a human voice, confirmed that “Damian accepted the woman’s gift not for the sake of bribes, but for the sake of the Lord.” Thus the relics of the holy brothers were placed together in Fereman in Mesopotamia.
Cosmas and Damian of Assia are known as the guardians of chickens, which is why their holiday is November 1st of the Old Style / November 14th of the New Age. For a long time they were prayed for insight into learning, especially in small children; it is known that even in Greece they were revered as assistants in the comprehension of book literacy. Several times a year, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of remembrance of Saints Cosmas and Damian, who are prayed for for the sick: July 1 and November 14. There is an opinion that these are completely different pairs of saints. The first lived and suffered in Rome, and the second in Asia. Healing from Heaven
When a person is seriously ill, he approaches the world and his life completely differently. There is only one hope left - in the Heavenly Doctor, that is, in God, the Mother of God and the saints.
Among the Orthodox there are even certain saints to whom it is customary to pray for health. The first on their list is the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In earthly life he was a skilled doctor and helped many.
Around the same time, or even several decades earlier, lived Cosmas and Damian of Rome - siblings known as disinterested doctors.
Why are saints called free doctors?
Cosmas and Damian were born around the third century in Rome. Their parents were secret Christians and accordingly raised their children in the Orthodox faith.
At a conscious age, the brothers studied medicine to help people. The Lord, seeing their righteous life and Christian love, rewarded them with a special gift - they healed others from illnesses. The brothers fulfilled the words of the Savior by their own example “Freely you have received, freely give”(Matt. 10:8). For this, Saints Cosmas and Damian are also called unpaid doctors - they did not receive a “bribe”, that is, a reward, for their help.
Their ministry was a kind of preaching of Christianity. When healing people from illnesses, they said that they did not do it on their own, but thanks to the help of Christ. They set one condition for patients: believe, and according to your faith the Lord will heal you.
Why were Cosmas and Damian sent to prison?
Just imagine a great city in which two strange doctors appeared: siblings heal even the most seriously ill and hopeless, and they don’t even charge for it. They only say: we are doing this with God’s help in order to recover, you also believe.
It is not surprising that word of these brothers will spread very quickly and reach the authorities. Now imagine that this government is against Christians. What will she do with these fellow Christian healers? At the very least, he will be arrested, or even fed to the lions in the Colosseum.
Saints Cosmas and Damian quickly attracted the attention of the city authorities. Roman soldiers were looking for them. Christians, wanting to protect the innocent healers, asked them to temporarily hide. The soldiers, unable to find doctors, captured other Christians who fell into their hands.
After this, the brothers openly appeared before the soldiers and asked to release the prisoners.
Saints Heal the Emperor
During the trial, they openly declared their Christian views before the Roman Emperor Carinus and refused to bow to the pagan gods.
Cosma and Damian also pointed out that they did not harm anyone, but only treated those who contacted them for free. The Lord helped them in everything, by whose power they healed.
But the emperor did not listen to them and insisted on worshiping idols. At this time, a miracle happened: Karina was struck by a sudden illness. The emperor was convinced from his own experience that Christianity is the true religion.

To remove the brothers, he resorted to a deceitful trick: he invited doctors to collect medicinal herbs in the mountains with him. When Saints Cosmas and Damian agreed, he led them far into the mountains and secretly killed them. But this teacher did not know the deep essence of Christianity: saints help people both during earthly life and after physical death.

Following the example of Christ, they soon began to move from one city to another, where they healed everyone who turned to them for help. And, indeed, many people came to them: the blind, the lame, the possessed, and they brought the paralytic. In every city, crowds of people surrounded the brothers, asking for help and healing from illnesses. At the same time, Saints Cosmas and Damian did not take any money for their labors, although as doctors they had the right to payment for their work. The holy brothers healed many people, but one day the Lord tested their loyalty. A certain woman named Palladia suffered from a serious illness for many years. One day she heard about the miracles Cosmas and Damian were performing. The woman immediately asked them to come to her house. The brothers responded to the woman’s request and came to her. As soon as they entered the house, Palladia was immediately healed. To celebrate, the woman was ready to give them everything she had, but, as you know, those without money did not take payment for their labors. However, Palladia did not calm down. Wanting to somehow reward the brothers, she turned to one of them - Saint Damian - with a request to take three eggs in the name of her vow and for the glory of the Holy Trinity. Damian for a long time refused to accept even such a modest gift, but for the sake of the name of the Holy Trinity, he eventually agreed to take it. Having learned that Saint Damian had taken a gift from Palladia, Saint Cosmas made a will that after their departure to the Lord they would not be buried together. There is no doubt that such a decision was very difficult for Cosmas himself, because from birth he and his brother always stayed together as one unit: they grew up together, studied together, went to preach the faith, healed people, prayed to God. Seeing the inner torment of Cosmas, on the same night, after the saint made his will, Christ Himself appeared to him and said: “Cosmas! Why are you mourning for the sake of the three eggs you took? They were taken not for the sake of bribes, but for the sake of the wife’s oath in My name...” The appearance and words of the Lord lifted the stone of burden from the soul of Saint Cosmas, but he did not tell anyone about what he saw and heard. Some time after this, he departed to the Lord. Saint Damian lived a little longer, but after a while he too died. Not knowing about the appearance of Christ to Cosmas and fearing to violate the will of the saint, people for a long time could not figure out where to place the body of his brother, Saint Damian. An amazing miracle happened here. As people stood in bewilderment next to the body of Saint Damian, a camel approached them. This was an animal that the holy brothers at one time healed from the disease of demoniac possession, since an evil spirit resided in its body. And so, approaching the people, the animal said in a human voice: “People of God, who have enjoyed many signs and wonders from Saints Cosmas and Damian, and not only you, but also we, the animals given to you by God.
