Budget heated garage. How to build a garage: from what, with your own hands and inexpensively

Garage near the house with block house cladding

You have decided to build a house for your car, but are short on funds, how can you make sure that the garage is spacious, well-built, and has enough finances? In this article we will tell you which material is cheaper to build a garage from, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

What do manufacturers offer?

The building consists of the following structures:

  • Foundation.
  • Walls.
  • Roof.
  • Gates.
  • Finishing.

We will analyze each item separately and try to select the most economical type of material for each structure.

Foundation

A strip base is usually installed under the garage (see).

It is made from several types of material:

  1. Prefabricated iron concrete blocks.

The advantages of such a foundation are speed of installation, strength and reliability. They can also be used to lay out a basement in a garage or inspection hole. But the price of the blocks is quite high; in order to deliver and install them, you will have to hire expensive equipment, specialists in working with a crane and installing reinforced concrete.

This option is good when used blocks are available, a friend works on a crane and is ready to help for a nominal fee, and the owner of the construction site has the skill and experience of installation work.

  1. Concrete poured into installed formwork with mandatory reinforcement.

In this case, you will only have to spend money on cement and sand-gravel mixture; any formwork is used suitable material: used boards, panels, plywood, metal sheets, that is, everything that may be at hand. For reinforcement, you can also find used reinforcement, mesh or any metal profile; pieces or scraps that are tied together into a single structure will do.

You can make a concrete mixture manually or using a small (0.5 m3) mortar mixer, which one of your garage neighbors or friends will probably have. Of course, this option will take some time and effort, but, as they say, “your own work doesn’t count” if you need to save on materials and work.

  1. Brick or foam, cinder blocks.

To make such a foundation yourself, you need some experience and knowledge of brickwork, and hiring a specialist will cost a lot. In addition, the surface of blocks or bricks will require mandatory multi-layer waterproofing against moisture penetration and protection of the material from destruction.

So, based on the above, we conclude that the most cost-effective foundation for a garage is a “ribbon” of concrete mixture, made and poured with your own hands.

Walls

The garage is a lightweight building, and this structure experiences minor loads - roofing and precipitation, so powerful, thick walls are not needed here.

If the garage is adjacent to the house, then you can save on one wall, the main thing is to correctly connect the two buildings. We will not develop this topic here; instructions for connecting a garage to a house are available on any construction site.

Let's talk about inexpensive materials from which you can build walls:

Dimensions of the building (cottage, garage, bathhouse, etc.)
Wall perimeter, m
Wall height, m
Windows and doors
Entrance door, pcs.
Door width, m
Door height, m
Windows, number of pcs.
Width of one window, m
Height of one window, m
Select building material and masonry
Type of material
Expanded clay concrete blocks, masonry 0.5 blocks, wall 20 cm.

Expanded clay concrete blocks, masonry in 1 block, wall 40 cm.

Cinder blocks, 0.5 block masonry, 20 cm wall.

Cinder blocks, 1 block masonry, 40 cm wall.

Brick cladding, thickness 0.5 bricks or 12 cm.

Cladding made of thickened brick, wall thickness 0.5 bricks

So, now you know how many expanded clay blocks or cinder blocks are needed for your building. Now, using simple calculations on a regular electronic calculator, you can find out the total amount of money for all the blocks needed for a cottage or garage.
But these materials are very hygroscopic, so you will have to line the outside of the garage to protect it from weather conditions, which will require additional costs.

    • Brick (see).

A self-sufficient material that does not require additional cladding, construction from it is durable, strong and reliable, the light weight and compactness of the material is also an advantage, but construction will take some time, perhaps longer than we would like. In addition, the cost of brick is probably the highest compared to others, and construction will require skill and special skills.

    • Blocks made of foam, gas and slag concrete.

Thanks to the dimensions of the material, construction time is reduced, the building will be light, warm, durable, the cost of the blocks is affordable, and transportation will not be difficult. In addition, the mass of walls made of foam blocks does not require a powerful foundation, in this case you can save a little on the foundation.

    • Metal.

From sheet steel it is possible if the owner has welding skills, or it is possible to hire a specialist. A frame garage with metal cladding will cost less than one made of brick or foam block.

Disadvantage metal garage is high thermal conductivity, in other words, it will be very cold in winter, the walls will require insulation or the installation of a heating device. If this factor does not matter, then best material for the construction of a garage - sheet steel.

    • Precast concrete.

Walls made of reinforced concrete panels are quickly installed, the work can be completed in a day. You either buy slabs (used ones are fine, but without visible defects), or pour them yourself. In this case, you will have to spend money on cement and a sand-gravel mixture), the concrete is prepared using a small concrete mixer.

A precast concrete garage is strong, durable, and with some insulation it will be comfortable in any weather. Although installation will require the use of a crane or manipulator, if you work efficiently, you can significantly save on costs.

    • Beam or board.

A frame structure made of wood will be quite inexpensive, but the high fire hazard of such a building makes you think about the need to build a garage from this material.

It is not easy to unequivocally answer the question of what material is best to build a garage, and in particular walls. All the materials offered can be purchased at an affordable price; they are excellent for constructing a building, it all depends on your capabilities.

Important! If you are familiar with the work of a bricklayer, then a garage made of brick or foam concrete is what you need. If you have a familiar crane operator, then it’s easier to fill and install Wall panels. And the ability to hire a welder or the ability to hold an electrode will help you make garage walls from metal.

    Roof

It can be of two types: single-slope and double-slope; we will not talk about a more complex and expensive configuration, since our question is to build a garage at minimal cost.

The ceiling is made of hollow slabs or timber, the ceiling is hemmed with boards or plywood. For rafters, take a board at least 40 mm thick, for sheathing - a board 25–30 mm (in order to save money, you can use unedged, but you will have to remove the wane, otherwise the wood will quickly rot).

Such a roof will help solve the issue of insulation; the floor in the attic can be covered with slag, which is the most inexpensive and accessible insulation material. Roofing material For gable roof a corrugated sheet or a regular one can serve asbestos cement slate, proven over the years, inexpensive, practical and durable material.

For the ceiling, reinforced concrete slabs are used, which are laid directly on the walls with a slight slope to drain rain and snow water. Here the ceiling also serves as a roof. The joints are caulked with mortar or filled polyurethane foam, a cement screed 50 mm thick is placed on the surface for leveling.

Roofing materials for garage with pitched roof Usually they use rolled, welded ones, although to save money you can buy roofing felt, but this is a rather short-lived material, prone to rapid destruction, cracking, etc. Here it is better not to save money and buy more modern weldable materials, for example, TechnoNIKOL.

So, if you choose from these two types of roofing, it is clear that a shed roof will cost 10–15% less.

    Gates

The most cost-effective will be conventional metal swing gates, they are reliable, strong and perfectly perform the necessary protective functions. It is enough to paint them twice with metal paint for exterior use.

    Finishing

Depending on what material the garage is built from, the interior and exterior decoration depends. Usually no one goes to great lengths when decorating a garage, but it still doesn’t hurt to do the most necessary things.

    • Brick does not require special finishing; the outside is usually left in its original form, and the inside of the wall can simply be coated with water-based paint.
    • Block garage requires exterior finishing, it can be planed boards, lining, siding or simple plaster- whatever you can afford, it wouldn’t hurt to plaster the inside with one layer and also cover it with water-based emulsion or lime.
    • The metal garage is painted with wear-resistant paint both outside and inside.

    Conclusion

To find out for yourself what to build a garage from at the lowest cost, you must first calculate the building materials for the garage, starting with the foundation and ending with the roofing and finishing, and then select the most affordable materials.

Important! The cost of registering the building with the relevant authorities must be included in the estimate.

We hope that the thematic photos and videos we provide will help you in resolving this issue.

There are a lot of ways to build a garage with your own hands: from a simple iron box with minimal amenities, to a full-fledged brick building with several rooms and the ability to live in the summer. Most men perceive the garage as their personal territory, where they can do what they love - take care of the car, do some tinkering, relax with friends, and so on.

To begin with, you should answer main question: Why do you need a garage? Think about how you are going to use it, why you need it in the first place. The budget, complexity of construction, material and set will depend on this additional amenities.
The few motorists who simply need a place to store their car often choose private parking lots with a canopy or buy special metal boxes.

Small houses are transported on a tractor, their installation takes several hours. Those who want to use the garage as a warehouse, workshop or recreation area should take the construction issue more seriously. For most purposes, a strong and durable building with additional amenities such as electricity and water is required. Also take into account the specific climate of your region: construction in northern latitudes will cost more, and the technology will be more complex. Building a garage with your own hands in warm latitudes with little rainfall is easier and cheaper, but the question may be the choice good place.

How to choose a place

Many motorists prefer to build on the territories of garage cooperatives. In this case, you avoid serious problems with amenities and accommodation. Renting a plot of land and building a garage will not cost much. Often, cooperative owners offer a choice of one of several plans, taking into account the dimensions of the machine, the height of the building, the supply of communications, and maintenance of the building. In addition, your garage will be protected by security around the clock - you don't have to worry about your property being damaged or stolen.

If you are building a garage on your site, the main problems will be choosing a location and designing the road. Let us immediately note that building a house with a garage is not recommended - a large room with iron gates will take away heat in winter, bad smell gasoline and oil can become a nuisance for your family. It is better to choose a site 5-10 meters from the house, so that the garage door and the gate from the yard are on the same line. It is better to make the distance from the garage to them about ten meters - this will allow you to remove the car from the garage during repairs or other work, but it will remain in your yard.

Land selection

The best option is to build on a flat piece of land. Before starting work, dig down about a meter with a shovel - make sure that there is no sand or cavities below (especially important for areas with sudden changes in elevation or near rivers). A good plot will give you a free hand and allow you to build a large and heavy building.

Construction of a garage in the city, near multi-storey buildings, must be agreed upon with the architecture department or a similar body. Illegal construction of a garage, even a metal box, is fraught with serious trouble with the law. In this case, it is better to take a long-term lease or purchase a building plot.

Size and design

As we said, it all depends on the goals. Standard metal box has dimensions of approximately 4x4x2.3 meters - enough to park a car and make simple repairs.

Good brick garage will have dimensions of about 5x8x3 meters with a gently sloping slate roof or a simple concrete floor. Such dimensions require not only space for a car. Workbenches and machines, cabinets and shelves for storing parts, fuel, interior care chemicals, tools and more. In special cases, a garage is built with a greater depth (up to 12 meters), for space for a motorcycle or trailer (relevant for rural areas).

When choosing a building material, you should focus on the local market. If there is a brick factory, a metal rolling shop, or sand or stone quarries near your place of residence, the cost of construction can be reduced by purchasing materials in bulk.

  • Some craftsmen build a garage out of wood. The cheapness of such a design and ease of construction are the main advantages, however, if the technology is not followed, this garage can become a grave for a car. Wood is very afraid of dampness and fire; its use as a workshop also raises questions.
  • Another thing - aerated concrete blocks. They are easy to install even for a beginner, they are relatively cheap and available for purchase almost throughout the CIS. However, their cost is quite high at the moment.
  • A brick garage with proper laying of 1.5-2 bricks is preferable. This is an expensive design, but it will last more than 100 years if the technology is followed. It can be sold by reducing the construction price (especially if there are communications).

DIY garage foundation

For walls made of brick or aerated concrete, a foundation is required. It will become a strong support for a heavy structure and will allow the garage to last for decades without major repairs.

A standard foundation pit is up to 1-1.5 meters deep and at least half a meter wide. You can dig it out manually or using special equipment (if available). The choice of foundation is determined by several parameters:

  • Availability of materials.
  • Availability of time for installation or filling.
  • Types of garage foundations

A monolithic foundation made of stone and concrete mortar is considered traditional (proportion: 1 part Portland cement to 3 parts screenings). The stone is placed in the pit in an even layer of 30-40 cm, first large fragments, then medium ones, and finally crushed stone. It is worth filling in one or two passes with a liquid solution. After the solution seeps between the stones, refill it 5-10 cm below their level. Then lay a new pillar according to the same pattern, fill it with a solution of greater density.

Installing such a foundation will take several days, and sometimes a week, but it will become solid foundation for construction.

The foundation should be 20-30 cm above ground level. At the final stage, it is worth laying large fragments so that they create an even plane around the entire perimeter (use a long water level or a pendulum). Thick concrete and sheets of roofing material will help you finally level the foundation level. After this, you can begin building walls made of brick or aerated concrete.

For a wooden garage or iron box, the foundation can simply be a concrete pad with medium-diameter metal pipes poured around the perimeter of the garage. Profiles for the frame can be welded to them wooden building or the metal box itself.

IN Lately Common methods of foundation installation are strip, monolithic and pile (column, prefabricated).

      • Tape - a reinforced concrete structure with strip pouring of concrete into the pit. Metal reinforcement gives stability to the future structure, concrete creates a cushion for the future building. Before laying, it is worth pouring dry sand into the bottom of the hole and waterproofing the future foundation.

      • Columnar or pile is a foundation made of concrete piles (2-3 meters of distance between them) and concrete filling of cavities. The main advantage of such a foundation is ease of installation, however, it also requires special equipment.

    • A monolithic slab is another type of strip foundation, which involves pouring a huge concrete pad, reinforced with concrete. At the bottom of the pit, 0.5-1.5 meters deep (depending on the type of soil - the more stable, the thinner the cushion can be), sand is poured into an even layer. Then it is necessary to protect the future pillow from water and fill the frame from reinforcement (sometimes they use large stone) concrete. The disadvantages of such a foundation are the high cost and the need for special equipment (ideally a concrete truck). If you are laying a stone foundation, the concrete can be mixed using a small concrete mixer or even a small container (bathtub, basin) by hand.

The feasibility of a pit in the garage

If you are an avid car enthusiast or do private repairs Vehicle- you need a hole. You will be able to carry out chassis repairs yourself, without the risk of being crushed by your own car if the jack fails. In addition, the garage pit is often used as an impromptu cellar for vegetables - and this is not a joke. All useful space in the garage can be used for household purposes.

When calculating the parameters of the pit, it is worth taking into account the distance between the wheels of the car, its weight and overall dimensions. For heavy cars (over 1.5 tons), it is worth taking care of the foundation for the pit - this will become an additional reinforcement of the structure. A standard pit has dimensions of 5x.05x1 meters and is dug exactly in the middle of the garage. If space allows, make steps on the side of the gate for easy descent into the pit (for example, pour it out of concrete). Steps can also act as tool shelves during repairs. A wooden or iron ladder for descending into a pit is not recommended - it is inconvenient and dangerous in the cold season.

    Walling

Wooden walls - erection of beams along the perimeter (about a meter of distance between them), fastening them together in the upper plane using transverse beams. Use iron brackets to strengthen the structure. The walls should be made of long boards, having previously covered them with a primer. For additional insulation, place sheets of foam or mineral wool between the outer boards and the inner ones. Building a garage from solid logs (like a log house) is also possible, but it will cost you a pretty penny.

Brick walls- a popular option for constructing a garage from red or white brick. The thickness of the walls varies from 20 to 50 cm, depending on the type of roof. Laying walls always starts from the corner. To level the level, use a simple water tool or a more expensive laser tool. You need to lay the brick on a thick cement mortar(ratio of cement and sand: 1 to 3). Brick dressing should be done with an overlap. Beautiful masonry, for example “Lipetsk” or facing brick rests last and only on a strong foundation. If the garage has windows, then you should take care of concrete floors, which you can purchase or cast yourself.

Not recommended big windows for the garage, just like in the house. A good option there will be small but wide windows in the upper third of the wall. They will provide enough light, but will retain a large number of workspace.

Aerated concrete, like brick or cinder blocks, overlaps from the corner. The construction of walls from this material is easier and faster, but the price per m3 will be higher. If you are building a brick garage, you can use used materials (for example, for additional room or interior decoration), then in the case of aerated concrete it is worth choosing one specific type of blocks and purchasing it sufficient quantity. At warehouses or specialized sites, use a calculator to calculate required quantity gas blocks.

The roof is the most problematic part of construction

It’s easy to build garage walls with your own hands - two strong men can do it in no more than a month. However, installing a roof often presents a lot of difficulties. For budget option use simple concrete floors, which are installed at an angle, down towards the rear of the garage. 2-3 standard floors enough for the construction of a simple and reliable roof. To protect from rain, cover such an overlap with roofing material and tar it.

If it is not possible to lay concrete floors, good solution will become slate or corrugated board. A timber frame with a slight slope towards the back wall of the garage will make a good base for the slate. The gaps between the flat ceiling and the slate can be filled with bricks.

A more complex option - triangular roof with a small attic between the planes. In this case you will have to order wooden beams and install them on the finished ceiling plane. The wooden beams will become the legs of an isosceles triangle, fastened with brackets to each other at the vertex of the triangle. Lighter boards use long self-tapping screws to fasten the triangles together.

Slate sheets are placed from bottom to top, so that water does not leak under the sheets. Slate nails They are driven directly into the beams, so the distance between them should be small (the optimal one is the width of the slate sheet minus the width of the two waves).

    DIY garage door

First, let's calculate the width of the gate. The formula is simple: the width of your car + 0.5-1 meter for free entry and exit from the garage. There are several ways to make a convenient gate:

    • Rising up. Slatted gates, which slide up and inward, under the ceiling, are now gaining popularity, but their operation requires electricity to power the lifts. Their installation is carried out by small private companies.
    • A simpler option is to weld the gate from metal. The frame of double-leaf gates is made from metal profiles. The plane can be either a solid metal sheet or wooden shield, knocked down from boards. Take care of the locking area in advance.
    • Gate curtains must be the largest. They are welded to a metal frame, which is assembled separately and installed during the construction of the walls.
    • The gate must open outward. For a large canvas, it is worth making two manual latch locks that will hold the canvas by the bottom and top part frames This will keep the gate from bending during gusts of wind and distortions that can come with time.

    Garage interior decoration

If you just store the car in the garage and do nothing else there, it will be enough to fill the cracks between the bricks or blocks with mortar. If you use the garage as a workshop, you should take care of the functionality of the space - make a hood, putty the walls, make places for socket boxes, pour metal frames for workbenches. Painting the walls is not necessary for such a structure. Also pay attention to the ease of cleaning - there should be no closed corners, the perimeter should be ventilated.
It is better to install lighting around the entire perimeter - 4 neon lamps above the work surface with independent switches to save energy.

Heating and insulation of the garage

This is worth taking care of if you work in a garage or live in northern latitudes with cold and frosty winters. Insulating a garage with foam plastic - possible variant. Sheets of 5cm polystyrene foam will protect the structure from heat loss.

It is better to heat a garage using portable heat blowers. Small electric batteries and fans placed around the perimeter will be a good way to heat the room.

Installation autonomous heating, water-type batteries (in the case of adding a garage to a house) are possible in theory, but in practice they are practically not used.

Drawings and diagrams for building a garage with your own hands

This information is available on the Internet a huge number. However, to design a garage for a specific land, vehicle and purpose, it is best to consult an experienced architect. Spend several thousand rubles on a consultation with an expert who will help you draw up a competent drawing of the future structure. Not only the survivability of the structure, but also your safety directly depends on this.

In public libraries you can still find old Soviet books on the topic “how to build a garage with your own hands.” Although new materials and construction techniques appear on the market every day, classic garage building plans can be useful to you. At least they can be used to calculate overall dimensions.

    Estimated estimate for construction

    • Price of land (or rent)
    • Architect's work
    • Price of building materials
    • Rental of special equipment
    • Laying communications.

Building a garage in a rural area will cost you approximately RUR 100,000.
For a city, this price can be three times more expensive (due to expensive delivery of materials and specific legislation).

    Popular questions and answers

    • How to supply electricity to the garage?

If it is built on the territory garage cooperative- It's not a problem. Contact the administration and they will allocate a cable for you. All you have to do is buy a meter and sign a contract. For a garage near a private house, the cable can be laid underground from the house or above the ground (height of at least 3 meters). It is more difficult to install light in urban areas. To do this, contact the architecture department and the electricity supply company.

    • What is the best way to place workbenches and machines for a garage workshop?

It is better to place them on the back wall of the garage. It’s better to place several sockets there, a place for a compressor, and put cabinets for consumables.

    • How to choose a lock for a garage?

If the garage is located near the house, a large lock with a long key is sufficient. If the garage is located far from the house, install 2-3 different types of locks (padlock, internal for different keys).
Sometimes owners install burglar alarms. Grilles on windows are also not uncommon.

    • How to protect a garage from fire?

Facing with fire-resistant bricks, building with aerated concrete blocks or other fire-resistant material will provide good protection. It is also worth taking care of the grounding of the electrical network.
Foam insulation reduces fire protection - for some types of foam, the temperature of a burning cigarette is enough to ignite. If insulation is installed around the entire perimeter of the garage, it will easily flare up even from a small fire. Please take this into account.

    • Is it worth making several rooms in the garage?

If you are going to do repairs and production - yes. A small partition can be made in order to protect the car from dust and dirt. In addition, sometimes a garage is attached to a summer kitchen, barn and other outbuildings. This good option saving territory while maintaining work space.

It is quite possible to build a convenient garage yourself in a month. Of course, if you have an assistant, the work will go faster and it’s quite possible to complete it in two weeks. The main thing is to decide on the choice of material.

Let's consider the most affordable materials from which to build a garage, at the lowest cost in terms of complexity:

    • Ready metal constructions can be installed within a day on a shallow foundation or concrete plates. The disadvantage of such a building is that it requires high-quality insulation and waterproofing.
    • The option made from corrugated sheets will be cheaper, but welding work will be required.
    • A garage made of sandwich panels is quick and convenient. On metal carcass Insulated panels with a thickness of at least 100 mm are installed. A foundation is not required for such a building; a compacted cushion of crushed stone is sufficient. For a private home, the ideal fast and convenient option at minimal cost.
    • If you have access to inexpensive wood, it is reliable and durable. Logs treated with antiseptics and fire retardants are not inferior to stone and brick in terms of thermal insulation and durability, and even better.
    • A reliable and warm brick garage will cost more; it will require pouring a strip or slab foundation and take care of the insulated roof. A garage made of foam concrete will cost less, but in this case you will have to think about high-quality insulation and waterproofing.

Let's take a closer look at each construction option, then it will be easier to decide which garage to build is most profitable for you.

If you compare by price, then cinder blocks are a budget choice. The principle of building from brick or stone is similar, so let’s look at building from blocks step by step.

Available for sale different variants blocks, but it is important to pay attention to their configuration. Solid blocks should be used for the foundation; they can better withstand heavy loads, and hollow blocks should be used for garage walls.

Types of blocks and their characteristics:

    • Materials pressed from blast furnace slag with the addition of perlite or polystyrene are the most reliable and durable.
    • After construction, shell rock requires mandatory plastering of the walls inside and out, but is famous for its excellent thermal insulation characteristics.
    • Foam concrete is convenient and inexpensive, does not require finishing, holds heat well.

The downside of any block material is that it is not resistant to moisture. Even on dry soils, it is imperative to lay a layer of waterproofing on the foundation. At high level groundwater the site is an expensive pleasure - serious waterproofing is needed, it is better to choose other materials.

    Foundation structure

A brick garage (one or half a brick) or cinder blocks can be safely laid on a reinforced strip foundation of medium depth. The width of the tape is 40-45 cm, the depth is 50 cm, no less.

A building made of foam concrete or cinder block must be installed on a low hydro- and thermally insulated base in order to cut off moisture from the ground. Ordinary rolled roofing felt in two layers is perfect for construction.

After the foundation is erected, the base is heat and vapor insulated using a special material. Universal option hydro-, heat- and vapor barriers - simple roofing material. For vapor barrier, you can choose a special membrane for foundations.

It is important to remember that it will take 28 to 30 days for concrete to harden, depending on the weather. Therefore, it is better to pour the foundation in early spring, when the soil has thawed, but it is not yet hot. This Better conditions for perfect hardening of concrete and construction of any concrete foundation.

You can fill the foundation in the fall, but here you need to focus on the weather. Cinder blocks can only be installed in dry weather; the material should not be allowed to get wet.

Experts recommend a brick plinth for a garage - it is more reliable and durable. The height of the base, depending on soil moisture, is 10 – 20 cm.

Be sure to provide a blind area 50 cm wide

    Construction of walls, screed, roofing

Doing block masonry with your own hands is much easier and faster than brick or stone masonry. If you need a warm garage, then we lay out the walls using the butting method in one stone. For the southern regions, half a stone laid using the spoon method is quite sufficient.

Important. We install the gates before we start building the walls. The same rule is observed when laying bricks.

For the north, it is necessary to build a wall of at least two stones, since a wall of one stone freezes at a temperature of -15 and above, serious insulation will be needed, which is not cheap.

To ensure that the wall of the building is level, we first lay out the corners, and then lay cinder blocks along the cord using the bricklaying method, overlapping the seam of the bottom row.

The floor screed can also be poured with M200 cement, it is cheaper, but at least ten centimeters thick.

    Brick or stone masonry

We also install walls made of brick or stone on a medium-depth strip foundation with the obligatory arrangement of a plinth. Sequence and nuances:

    • A plinth for brick and stone needs to be at least 10 cm high.
    • It is important to lay roofing felt waterproofing on top of the base.
    • Before building the walls, you need to install the garage door so that it is firmly embedded in the brickwork. The embedded rods are welded at intervals of 30 cm around the perimeter of the gate and embedded in the seams of the brickwork.
    • We lay the bricks using the usual method (chain), starting from the corners.
    • Mortar for masonry: cement M400, not lower, in the proportions of a bucket of cement to four buckets of sand. It is important that the solution is not liquid; the consistency of thick sour cream is better. For plasticity, you can add half a bucket of clay or milk of lime.
    • The height of the wall at the gate is 250 cm, the slope decreases towards the rear wall to a height of two meters.

If you need a wall height of three meters or higher, then the walls need to be reinforced metal mesh. Most reliable option reinforcement - every fifth row of brick laying.

The slope for the roof should be no less than five centimeters per meter of wall masonry. The standard slope is for good water drainage with a wall height difference of 30 centimeters.

    Roof

We choose a shed roof based on the budget - slate will cost less, corrugated sheeting will have to be additionally insulated with a layer of plywood or other sheathing material.

Garage floors can be made of wood, but metal beams more reliable and durable. They are embedded into the walls to a depth of 10 cm. For cinder block walls, it is important to reinforce the installation site of the beam with a layer of concrete.

What else is important to pay attention to:

    • The pitch of the floor beams is 80 cm with a slope along the level of the walls.
    • The projection outside the walls is at least 20 cm.
    • The rough filing is made from 40 mm unedged boards with a minimum of cracks.
    • Rolled roofing felt is used as waterproofing on boards.
    • A layer of insulation over roofing felt - expanded clay, slag, mineral wool. It is undesirable to use polystyrene foam; it has zero air conductivity, which is dangerous for the garage.

All wooden structures be sure to paint or treat with an antiseptic deep penetration for wood. Building a garage with your own hands will cost 50 percent less than hiring a team of builders, but it will also take twice as long.

Prefabricated metal structures with different cladding

Disadvantages of a metal garage - cold and high humidity. Building a garage from ready-made sheets using a frame is quick and convenient. Using a welded metal frame, you can install two wall options:

    • Sandwich panels are slabs of two profiled metal sheets with a layer of insulation inside.
    • Corrugated sheeting – for walls will do only PS or S markings. Sheet hardness is at least 20. For a light and durable structure you need C-20 corrugated sheeting.

Solid concrete blocks or concrete slabs are suitable as a foundation for such a prefabricated structure. Some craftsmen are sure that there are simply no more reliable slabs than a poured slab monolithic foundation, 50 cm deep.

The frame posts are concreted into the foundation. It is imperative to provide a blind area up to 20 cm wide.

Sheets of corrugated sheets or sandwich panels are installed over the installed and welded frame using screws, rivets or bolts.

    Wooden garage

Construction of a garage made of wood is inexpensive and fast. Nowadays, prefabricated structures are very popular. frame technology. Such buildings are lightweight, do not require a serious foundation, and it is possible to insulate the walls.

    Main important steps:

    • The base can be monolithic, reinforced on a sand or gravel bed with a blind area around the perimeter of 20 cm, or made of cheap material - concrete blocks, 30 cm thick.
    • For frame garage An inexpensive columnar foundation is also suitable.
    • Since wood warps from moisture, the main focus is on waterproofing the foundation and plinth. Logs and boards must be treated with water-repellent impregnation and painted.
    • Lay a layer of roofing felt waterproofing along the entire perimeter of the foundation and along the plinth.
    • We make the corner posts from timber, and the rest of the frame from 50x100 boards, this is quite enough. For the upper joists, a 25x100 board is also suitable, but lower bars you need to take it thicker.
    • Bottom trim at intervals of 120 cm.
    • Any frame can be mounted finishing material– façade siding or lining..
    • A layer of steam and waterproofing between the outer and internal lining– mineral wool in rolls or slabs, vapor barrier film and plain polyethylene.
    • The roof can be installed either single-pitch or gable, depending on the chosen construction design.

The inside of the frame can be sheathed with sheets of plywood and painted with paint containing fire retardants. IN wooden garages the gates are installed last so that the building does not collapse under the weight of the metal.

    Options for easily erected frames

There are many options and possibilities for building a garage. There are also many most different materials, from which it can be built. But before you begin construction, or the choice of building materials, it is worth considering everything from the very beginning - from the moment of design.

    Preliminary planning

Initially, as soon as the thought of building came, you should not think about what is best to build a garage from; first you should think about its design, layout, dimensions, etc.

You should know that garages can be divided into many types and subtypes. They can be:

    • Free-standing, temporary structure;
    • Detached, capital construction;
    • Adjacent directly to the house;
    • Temporary building adjacent to the house.

What does free-standing temporary and capital garages can be seen in Fig. 1 below.

On the left you can see a permanent building made of brick, and on the right – a building made of metal. You've probably seen garages like this more than once. These are the ones we will talk about.

As an example for this article, we will take a detached garage.

    Garage construction layout

When planning to build a garage, you should initially carefully consider its dimensions - height, width and length. Again, if you plan to put a car in the garage and no longer use the garage space for any purposes, it’s worth dissuading you - make a small reserve - it will certainly be very useful to you in the future. There you can store, say, winter tires, spare parts, tools, etc. There will never be excess free space.

Again, there are no specific standards for building a garage, but they can be considered. In Fig. 2 you will be able to see several size options for the garage, each of which will allow you to save money and get the maximum usable area and convenience, or find a middle ground.

Small garage sizes can be inconvenient

Now that you have decided on the dimensions, you should start choosing the materials from which we will build the garage.

Materials from which you can build a garage

Just like the types of garages, there are a lot of different materials from which you can easily build your garage. Among the main options are:

    • Brickwork;
    • Wood, boards, beams, etc.;
    • Metal sheets;
    • You can use cinder concrete;
    • Reinforced concrete structure.

All of these options are acceptable for building a garage, however, you should consider all of these options separately, since each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

For example, brickwork has always been relevant. If you want to build a garage, then this particular material is publicly available, it does not have a high price; such a garage, having first taken care of the foundation, can be built with your own hands, without resorting to help professional builders. Such a design, of course, depending on the quality of work, will be able to last quite a long time, will not require constant repairs, etc. Brick buildings are reliable and practical.

In the picture below you can see a version of a garage built entirely of brick.

If this option is not suitable for you, you should start considering others.

For example, you can use cinder blocks as a material for a garage. In this case, you can save a lot. Cinder concrete will cost you much less than brick, but you will also encounter a number of difficulties. For example, cinder blocks are much more difficult to work with than brick; you will spend much more effort and time than with brick. Again, with regard to the safety and reliability of such a building, it will be significantly lower than when building a brick garage.

    Wood, boards and similar materials

Unfortunately, this material is not entirely suitable for building a garage. Despite its cheapness, this material is very whimsical. In particular, in the future, you will have to update the design very often:

    • Replace rotten boards;
    • Tint garage walls;
    • Patch the holes that will invariably appear;
    • Such a design will be very unreliable in terms of hacking.

However, such a design will be optimal if you have a sufficient amount of wood from which to make a garage. You do not need to purchase other building materials. Again, if the garage is located next to the house, on the site, then this option is quite acceptable. The garage will always be in front of your eyes. Then you can accept this option and begin construction. If the garage is located far from the house, out of line of sight, then you should prefer other materials. You can see what a garage made of boards will look like below.

Here are options for creating a garage from boards, bars, an option adjacent to the house, a separate one.

Despite the obvious impracticality of this option, many people prefer it due to its primary low cost. But, in the future, after several months, new stocks of boards, new investments in the construction and restoration of the garage will be required.

    Metal sheets and reinforced concrete

Many people in the distant 90s preferred to build detached garages from sheets of metal. There are several production options here:

    • You can make a one-piece structure, with the possibility of quick dismantling;
    • You can make a preliminary frame on which the sheets will be installed.

Whichever option you prefer, it’s worth knowing that the sheets need to be fitted very tightly, even overlapping. If one of the edges of your sheets begins to rust, you may end up with a hole that will have to be filled with something. In this case, you will have to buy more new leaf metal and attach it to an existing structure. Also, take care to purchase high-quality metal sheets that can withstand weather conditions, humidity, frost, heat, etc.

Optimality this option will also be high due to the fact that you do not need to invest large sums, building a garage from this material will not hit your budget. Another advantage will be the ability to build a garage very quickly. Perhaps, building garages from metal is much faster and easier than from any other materials.

An example of such a garage can be found below in the figure. Surely you have often seen such garages in your area, in the city. Such designs were once very popular in garage cooperatives.

In the case of reinforced concrete, you will get reliable design, which can be easily and simply disassembled and dismantled. Such materials also cost relatively modestly, but the reliability of such a design is very high. In the picture below you can see a reinforced concrete building.

When choosing materials for building a garage, you should not forget about what the foundation of your garage will be. An important point and a useful clarification would be the layout of the garage under the gate. Take the time to make metal traps for your garage door. In the future, you will be grateful to yourself, because it will be much easier to install any type of gate, both welding regular, swing, and installing sliding, lifting, sectional, etc., depending on your preferences.

An example of the foundation and preparation of the gate is in the figure below.

Useful video - what is the best material to build a garage from?

    09.08.2014

To extend service life paint coating car, it is recommended to store the car in a garage, especially in conditions of winter frosts or scorching summer sun. Once upon a time, so-called shells were popular, but such structures can be compared more to a cover than to a full-fledged building.

A modern garage should be equipped in such a way that both the car owner and the car itself feel comfortable in it. Therefore, it is important to choose the right material for future construction. Today, garages are built from brick, corrugated sheets, sandwich panels and much more. Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages, which are worth considering in more detail. First of all, you need to decide on the frame and decide what to build the walls from.

    Concrete plates

This is the most outdated material, which has a lot of shortcomings. For example, constructing a building will require massive equipment. If you don’t have welding equipment at hand, this will lead to even greater costs. In addition, a garage made of a concrete slab is completely impossible to transport.

But, if you have concrete slabs lying around at your dacha, you can use them too. But, it is better to consider other options.

    Brick

Full-fledged capital buildings are erected from this material. They are durable and suitable not only for storing cars, but also garden tools, bicycles and much more. As a rule, inspection pits are organized in such garages to carry out car repairs. This is not just a garage, but a full-fledged workshop.

If we talk about the advantages of a brick frame, then it is worth highlighting the following:

    • Long service life of the building (more than 50 years).
    • In such a garage there will be no problems in installing electricity, equipping ventilation system and even running water.
    • Fire resistance of the material.
    • If desired, after some time you can build a room over such a garage.
    • Brick does not require cladding or interior finishing.

Healthy! Can be used for garage broken brick or materials of lower standard. But, if you plan to build a building of several floors, then it is better to buy solid brick.

But there are also a number of disadvantages:

    • Since brick is a compact material, construction will require more time.
    • If the building is located separately from a residential building, then in this case you need to take care of proper insulation. To do this, the wall of the future building must be two bricks thick.
    • Based on the previous point, it follows that the foundation for such a garage must be solid.
    • Brick is more expensive than any other building material.

    Sandwich panels

These building elements are metal sheets with insulation laid between them (polystyrene foam, mineral wool, polyurethane or basalt fiber can be used). This type of construction is lightweight, which means that the foundation is not subject to such serious requirements as when building a brick garage.

Sandwich panels also have other advantages:

    • Low cost. A garage made of panels will cost much less than a brick or wooden one.
    • The building can be erected in 3-5 days. In this case, all the work is done with your own hands; no heavy equipment is required.
    • Construction in winter is allowed.
    • Since the panels already have insulation, there is no need to think about additional thermal insulation.
    • Such a garage can be disassembled and moved to a new location without any problems.

    The disadvantages include:

    • Low strength of the building. Shelves cannot be attached to the walls of such a garage.
    • The building can easily be destroyed by a hurricane, so not every region can build such structures.
    • The panels must be connected very tightly. If the garage begins to sag and gaps form between the panels, it will become very cold in winter.
    • Internal insulation highly flammable. Therefore, it will be difficult to conduct electricity.

Foam blocks, cinder blocks and expanded clay blocks

All these building materials are very methodically pushing brick out of the market. This is not surprising, because blocks of this type are lightweight and durable. Since they are much larger than bricks, buildings made from blocks are built much faster. At the same time, a ready-made garage will cost much less.

    There are other advantages:

    • You can build a two-story building.
    • Foam blocks retain heat well. According to these indicators, they are three times higher than the characteristics of brick.
    • Can be organized without any problems additional heating or install plumbing and electricity.
    • Fireproof materials.

Healthy! For construction you will need a reinforced belt.

But there are also some disadvantages:

    • Foam blocks (and other types of porous building materials) require high-quality external and internal finishing.
    • When the building shrinks strongly, the blocks crack easily.
    • The building material is difficult to store (the blocks are quite brittle).
    • Installation of shelves and cabinets is carried out only with the help of special fasteners.

    Tree

Timber, logs and boards are environmentally friendly building materials. Garages of this type are usually built on suburban areas. Often such buildings are combined with bathhouses, sheds and workshops.

The advantages of this building material include:

    • Nice appearance.
    • Good thermal insulation properties tree.
    • Construction speed.
    • Possibility to attach cabinets and hanging shelves by any convenient method.
    • The material does not emit toxins, so the garage can be attached to a residential building.

The disadvantages are usually the low moisture resistance and fire safety of the material. Both of these shortcomings are easily compensated for today with the help of special impregnations. For example, if you coat wood with a fire-retardant compound, its fire-resistant properties will be in no way inferior to any other material.

    Corrugated sheet

This is one of the cheapest options for constructing a garage that needs to be built in short time. Such a building can be dismantled in a matter of minutes and moved to a new location.

    Other advantages include:

    • Corrugated sheeting can last up to 30 years.
    • The building material is much cheaper than any other.
    • The building can be erected with your own hands in a few days.
    • Light weight material.

But there are also disadvantages. For example,:

    • Corrugated sheeting is not able to protect a car from theft. Thin sheets of iron can be broken using a regular can opener. Therefore, such buildings are suitable only for protection from precipitation and sun rays.
    • Additional insulation will be required. Iron has very high thermal conductivity.
    • Dents appear on walls easily.
    • Shelves and other niches for storing tools will have to be fixed to the floor.
    • Corrugated sheeting has extremely low noise insulation.

The same applies to sheet steel. Such a garage cannot be built without welding equipment. It will also have to install additional heating devices. However, the issue of insulation is faced by the car owner in most cases.

What material to insulate a garage with?

In this case, everything depends on how the building will be used. If the car owner plans to spend a lot of time in it and store tools, sports and other equipment in the garage, then it is best to insulate the walls with glass wool. For finishing, you can choose chipboard sheets. Some install stoves, but for this you will need to think through a hole for the pipe in the ceiling in advance.

Important! The stove can only be installed in buildings made of fire-resistant material.

If the garage is wooden, then the building needs to be insulated in several stages. Some people use sheets of glass wool for this. But it's not far away environmental material, which is completely illogical to use with wood. It is best to use natural clay for this. It is non-toxic and does not allow cold to pass through. You can sheathe the inside of the room with boards. This is an inexpensive but reliable option.

The foundation of the building is also important in this matter. It provides additional insulation, and in some situations, building a garage without good foundation and it’s not possible at all.

    Which foundation is better

There are several options for mounting the base:

    • Prefabricated reinforced concrete blocks. This reliable material, which installs quite quickly. Using reinforced concrete blocks, you can quickly build an inspection hole. But such panels are very heavy and expensive; you won’t be able to do it without a crane.
    • Monolithic foundation with reinforcement. This is exactly the kind of foundation that will be needed for a brick garage. A monolithic foundation is made without the use of a crane or other heavy equipment. However, this is not a cheap pleasure. You will need to purchase not only cement, but also a sand-gravel mixture, prepare formwork (you can use plywood, old boards and used panels for it). You also need fittings (can be replaced metal profile or mesh). Such a foundation takes a long time to build and gains the necessary strength over a long period of time.
    • Strip foundation. This optimal solution for garages made of foam blocks. Such a foundation is erected only under load-bearing walls. The foundation can be made of concrete, brick or rubble stone (usually most often used concrete mixture with reinforcement).

    • Made from brick or cinder blocks. It's pretty complex type base, in addition, you will need to pay great attention to heat and waterproofing.

The most the best option there will be a shallow strip foundation.

    In custody

The material for the garage should be selected based on the planned functionality of the building. If it is needed only for protection from precipitation, then corrugated sheeting without a base will do. But, for storing rubber, auto parts and carrying out repair work you need to think about a more solid structure.
