Wallpaper is often used in combination with other materials - brick and stone panels, wood masonry, plastering and painting. A variety of shades, textures and patterns allows you to use them in decoration accent wall, which, in turn, sets the tone and mood for the entire room.

The limited space of small compact hallways in Russian city apartments, especially in Khrushchev-era apartments, requires combining two tasks in the design of the walls - visual enlargement of the room and originality. The first is achieved through the use of light colors, contrast, room zoning and other techniques.

The most popular color scheme in modern hallways- These are different shades of beige. Together with the classic style in the design of the entire room, this design leaves pleasant impression- a feeling of peace, order, greatness. The beige color looks noble, does not irritate, and is combined with a good natural texture wooden furniture and doors in a small hallway.

Style selection

Classical

To add freshness to a proven classic, as well as visually increase the area of a small hallway, wallpaper is combined with painting the ceiling in White color, as well as dividing the walls into sections decorated in different colors.

Minimalism

The noble classics, beloved by most apartment owners, can be rivaled by another equally popular style - minimalism. For small spaces it is especially relevant. Wallpaper for a small hallway in a minimalist style can be bright, plain or with a pronounced print, geometric and floral patterns.

The room, decorated in a minimalist style, has little furniture and interior items. “Clothing” for the walls plays a worthy role in giving the room an atmosphere.

The photo shows a small hallway in a minimalist style. The laconicism in the color scheme made it possible to give the atmosphere of the room austerity, and Brown color wallpaper added volume.

You can apply other styles in the interior design for small hallways.

Provence and country

Provence is characterized by lightness, airiness, light, natural tones. Wallpaper in the Provence style can have floral patterns, as well as a texture close to natural materials - stone, wood.

In country, unlike Provence, you can see brutal accessories in the interiors - a massive stool carved from wood or coarsely woven rugs. Wallpaper in this style can have dark shades, matching the wood and stone from which village houses are built.

High tech

Metallic reflection of surfaces, strict geometric shapes, new functional solutions in furniture and accessories are the distinctive features of this style. Wallpaper for a small hallway in a high-tech style can be metallic in color, as well as all kinds of “acid” tones in a stylish combination with classic, calm shades.

Scandinavian

Characterized by restraint, minimalism, calm color schemes. The main color is white. Wallpaper for a small hallway in a Scandinavian style can be white, light gray, as well as other, mostly pastel colors.

Drawings and design

Each interior style requires its own wallpaper design - from small patterns to large patterns. Certain styles require wallpaper with a texture that reflects the overall theme of the room.

  • Plain, suitable for hallways in English, classical, and minimalist styles. Allows you to apply brighter details to the rest of the interior design - in furniture and accessories.

  • Wallpaper with large patterns and ornaments in the form of rosettes and monograms are inherent classic style. Often, in combination with this type of coating, gilding is used, or wooden slats, which bring greater elegance and a touch of luxury to the design of a small room.

  • Wallpapers with images various plants used in Provence and country style. Floral patterns are also often found in oriental style.

  • help create a more lively and interesting basis for decorating a small hallway in modern styles, such as high-tech. The drawing may be abstract and not clear, but it can set the tone for the atmosphere of the room.

When choosing wallpaper for a small hallway, take into account general style rooms. Wallpaper with a distinct design style can be hung on one wall, thereby emphasizing the stylistic identity of the interior.

In the photo, the wallpaper with a pattern in bright orange tones made the wall a full-fledged element of the interior, matching the color with the rest of the details.

Combination

Wallpaper for a small hallway is chosen taking into account its ability to visually expand the space. Light wallpapers will not look faded if they are combined with various design elements, which can be in the form of additional colors in the design of walls, as well as interior items.

  • Pastel walls look good with white stucco ceilings.
  • Volumetric cornices and baseboards in combination with wallpaper of a contrasting color, they delimit the space and give it completeness.
  • Horizontal division of walls Using different shades of wallpaper will allow you to control the visual effect. Dark wallpaper at the bottom of the wall there is an “apron” from the floor to the middle of the wall, and light shades the same color - in the upper part. This separation will allow you to avoid monotony, massiveness and heaviness that arise in the design of walls with a single color.
  • The best solution for colored walls is a combination of three colors. You need to choose one basic tone; it will occupy the bulk of the space. Wallpaper for a small hallway is of a light shade, and this is the base color. Two more complementary colors can be used in furniture, accessories and textiles.

Combination with doors

The doors in the hallway match the chosen style of the entire interior. In a classic design, doors can be of natural wood color in various shades - from light beige to dark brown. In the interior of a small room in the style of Provence, Scandinavian, minimalism, the doors can be white, while pop art and hi-tech allow you to bring freshness and originality to the interior in the form of doors in bright, rich colors.

Important: you need to put up wallpaper in the hallway after replacing the doors. If the work is done in the reverse order, the wallpaper may be damaged when installing the doors.

Doors and wallpaper should not be the same tone, otherwise the door will simply get lost against the general background. The exception is white doors in interiors, where the space is formed by additional elements in design - pieces of furniture and accessories in expressive colors, colored sections of walls.

The white door in the design of a small hallway does not match the wallpaper of deep, dark colors. In this case, the door will look like an inappropriate bright spot.

A door in light colors can be combined with light elements in the interior - vertical stripes of wallpaper, a wall opposite the door, framing rectangular interior items, such as paintings or photo frames. Doors will not get lost against the background of light walls if the coating is one shade lighter than the tone of the doors.

Dark doors go well with light wallpaper with a discreet pattern and geometric ornament.

Having hung wallpaper for painting in the hallway for the first time, the owners wait with caution to see how long this roll material will last without the need to tear it off and repaint it. Removing old wallpaper is truly a Sisyphean task. Anyone who looks to the future does not want to pay twice for finishing. He would rather pay once, buy wallpaper for painting, and enjoy the neat and stylish look of the corridor.

Paintable wallpaper in the hallway. What should you expect?

A small disadvantage of this material is the extra time spent. After all, wallpaper pasted in the hallway for painting should certainly be painted as quickly as possible.

And not all craftsmen will take on this work, which is more like painting than finishing. There's no part of a renovation that people won't do the first time, and skill comes with experience. Wallpaper for painting, covered with the color chosen in the salon, will look extremely impressive.

Another disadvantage of this finishing method can be considered, although with great stretch, the difficulty of choosing color combinations. This is a common problem for all craftsmen. There is hesitation among repairmen regarding the choice of paint due to the too large and varied range of painting products.

“How should you choose wallpaper for painting in the hallway?” - you ask. Pay attention to the strength of the wallpaper. Paper duplex wallpaper is, of course, good. But for painting the corridor there are both paper and, say, non-woven wallpaper. Don’t forget that the latest in wallpaper fashion, glassy wallpaper, has surpassed all conceivable limits in terms of the number of fans. Those who are at the forefront of interior design know very well that glass wallpaper protects the apartment from fire. The choice of wallpaper for the corridor also depends on the family budget.

Color is an important component of wallpaper for painting in the hallway

When guests come to your house, the first thing they see is the corridor and the decoration of the walls in it. By choosing fashionable, stylish, non-staining roll materials, you will win an endless competition on the topic: “whose corridor is better.” According to statistics, most people like it when the wallpaper in the hallway is painted in beige-golden colors. But you can choose cooler colors. Such wallpaper cannot be perceived as something homogeneous, although it seems that under the layer of paint there is a canvas without joints. This is the illusion that all wallpaper pasters strive for.

You can't go wrong if you use color to separate your wallpaper into two visually noticeable parts. Alas, small corridors, a legacy of the post-Soviet era, will haunt our imagination for many, many decades to come. You can think for a long time about how to visually push the walls of this misunderstanding called “the corridor in the Khrushchev building.” But there is only one conclusion: paintable wallpaper! Bright hues! No colorful layers! Shades of blue, according to interior designers, visually enlarge the room.

All light colors are easily soiled, be careful!

And remember, extremely light and delicate colors are still the most polluted, and this is an axiom. Don't let it bother you. Keep some paint in reserve. After a year or two, simply refresh the problem areas on your hallway walls. And having bought new paint a different color, you can completely update the appearance of the hallway. This is what paintable wallpaper for a corridor is good for - the ability to update the walls without tearing off or re-sticking the wallpaper.

What is the best way to choose wallpaper for wall decoration?

Buying wallpaper is a creative activity, but often the project provides for one thing, but the store has something completely different. In order not to abandon the conceived design idea, it is worth considering some points:

  • Choosing wallpaper to match the color of the floor covering is a mistake that reduces the height of the walls: if you want harmony, it is enough to buy canvases with a shade of pattern in a similar tone (for example, with furniture, laminate, tiles, linoleum);
  • Dark color is undesirable: it visually hides the area of any room;
  • The hallway is a place where the level of pollution is high, so you should give preference to practical shades or clever textures, through which you can hide stains or other dirt;
  • For large hallway or studio apartments are suitable bright colors and large prints, in small room area 7 sq. It’s better to buy canvases with small patterns.

IN long room It’s better to choose paired wallpapers, decorating them with a bright accent to differentiate them.

Stylish combination options

Combining wallpaper is an original technique for decorating hallway walls, which has no restrictions and welcomes any experiments:

  • Horizontal reception. The wallpaper is placed horizontally in the form of alternating different rolls (initially draw a line parallel to the floor);
  • Vertical combination. A method of alternation similar to the horizontal one, which allows a combination of canvases of the same and different widths (you can make plain ones wide, highlighting less contrast);

  • A technique for combining two close shades of the same texture. Using shades for soft contrast and a welcoming atmosphere, highlighting one or two walls;
  • Plain and patterned. A technique for decorating different walls or highlighting an accent wall in the middle, framing it on the sides with plain wallpaper (can occupy half the wall or a small area around the mirror);
  • Method of combining simple canvases and photo wallpapers. Accentuating one wall, pasting others with a monochromatic companion;

Often, when arranging your home, the design of the hallway and corridor is done last (according to the residual principle). However, this is the wrong decision. With the help of competent corridor design you can divert attention from small size hallway or construction flaws. The most common type of decor is wallpaper. Which canvases are best to choose for different types corridors, how best to combine them - this is what our article is about.

Types

Distinctive feature corridor design is increased wear resistance finishing material, because this space is usually a narrow entrance area, which means it is constantly exposed to contamination. To keep the room clean, you need to choose wallpaper that is easy to care for. Fortunately, in addition to the usual paper options, modern technologies offer many new types of wallpaper.

Vinyl

The most popular today are vinyl wallpapers (polyvinyl chloride). The basis of such material is paper or non-woven fabric. Vinyl film is applied to the base different ways. Depending on this method, vinyl wallpapers are:

  • Dense or smooth. High-density, flat or slightly textured film is often similar to ceramic tiles or stone.

These canvases can even be cleaned with a brush. You need to glue on a surface without large flaws.

  • Foamed. Thanks to the porous structure of the wall surface, these canvases can breathe. Only this type of vinyl wallpaper is breathable.

Has a negative attitude towards water. You can clean the dirty area with a slightly damp cloth.

Foam film does a good job of masking unevenness on the wall.

  • Solid. Such wallpaper is a very high-quality imitation of natural finishing materials(stone, brick, textiles, textured plaster) using a dense and rigid film. The choice of colors is huge.

Durability and durability are ideal for hallways. Manufacturers also offer painting options.

  • Hot stamping wallpaper(silk-screen printing) with silk threads and a soft shine is much finer. Because of this, the quality of the walls must be better, otherwise all the irregularities will be noticeable.

The service life of vinyl wallpaper is about 7-10 years. They are fade resistant. When applying glue, the sheets stretch, and when dry, they shrink and form gaps between the strips.

To improve the joining of strips (which is a problem for some types), a special tape is used.

Washable

This is wallpaper covered with a special water-repellent film. The criterion for this type is water resistance. You should definitely look at the information about this on the roll insert before purchasing. Some pieces can be wiped with a damp sponge, while others can withstand the hard bristles of a brush, because they can be highly resistant to abrasion.

These are the wallpapers that are used in narrow corridors or homes where there are small children and animals.

Paper

This wallpaper has a short service life. The gluing technology is such that they can easily tear. However, it is a breathable material. In addition, manufacturers now offer two-layer, denser fabrics - duplex. Boring Soviet wallpaper is a thing of the past. They were replaced by a colorful and textured variety. If, nevertheless, the simplicity of paper wallpaper confuses you, then you can use additional decor, which will be discussed below.

Glass wallpaper

Oddly enough, glass wallpaper is an environmentally friendly option for finishing materials. After applying this relief coating, unevenness and blemishes on the wall will be invisible. They are able to withstand mechanical damage (animal claws, abrasions, impacts). But such material requires painting after application to the wall. Moreover, you can change the color of glass wallpaper many times, even by applying drawings and stencils.

This type of material allows air and steam to pass through well and does not emit toxic substances. In the hallway, this is a wonderful choice for those who are comfortable with painted walls. Latex paint is usually used for decoration.

Liquid

No seams or flaws in the wall will be visible under it.

This mixture (cellulose, cotton, chemical fibers, adhesive composition and coloring pigment) is sold ready-made (in buckets) or dry (in bags). It is applied to the wall using a spatula with a layer thickness of about 5 mm. At the same time, the application technique can be very different, just like a spatula. Such a surface should be textured, not smooth.

Before purchasing, you should carefully read the instructions, since liquid wallpaper is very different from each other in composition and purpose.

This type of wallpaper is reminiscent of decorating with textured plaster. After application, you can additionally coat the surface with varnish. Then such a wall can be washed. If the varnish has not been used, then the surface is vacuumed if necessary. If desired, it can be repainted in a different color.

Non-woven

Non-woven fabric – non-woven material, which is based on textile and cellulose fibers bound with a polymer resembling fiberglass. A positive quality of non-woven wallpaper is that it retains its dimensions when applying glue. Non-woven fabric is stronger than paper, which increases the service life of the wallpaper.

This type of wall material looks voluminous due to sunlight falling on the fibers and illuminating it from the inside. In multi-layer non-woven fabric upper layer corrugated, resulting in beautiful visual effects.

When gluing to the wall, the piece does not need to be lubricated with glue, which greatly facilitates the work and allows you to carefully adjust the edges.

This material perfectly hides wall defects and sticks to almost any surface. But you need to keep in mind that the roll is translucent, so the color of the surface being pasted is important.

Laminated

Wallpaper can be laminated. This is a technique for applying threads that are natural (cotton, linen) or mixed (viscose) fibers. Paper is laminated with such elements or even fabric. The result is textile wallpaper. They are dense, they do not need to be adjusted according to the pattern, and the joints are easily masked.

Natural

Natural wallpaper is conventionally called wallpaper, in the production of which natural materials are used: bamboo, jute, cork chips. They are glued to a non-woven or woven base. It is difficult to make and care for such beauty. However, the walls look great with them.

But natural wallpaper is not suitable for all corridors. If bamboo has many light and dark shades, then the chips are brown, and this color is not suitable for dark rooms.

Quartz

This is one of the modern types, which is a paper or non-woven fabric on which a painted quartz sand. Such a product is not susceptible not only to abrasion, but also to fire. A wall with quartz wallpaper looks smooth, without joints. It can be repainted with latex paint if desired. It is also permissible to apply any drawings.

Metallized

This is a porous paper or fabric base on which thin layer foil, then special paint, and embossing or design on top. These wallpapers look incredibly beautiful and elegant. A feeling of luxury is present in the interior with similar decoration.

Metallized options are durable and easy to clean. But the wall underneath them must be perfectly flat and moisture-absorbing, since the glue will evaporate through it.

Linkrust (linkrusta)

This is a very unusual modern material - stucco, which is a layer of a mixture that includes wood flour, linseed oil, rosin, wax, chalk and other fillers. The naturalness of the components allows you to use linkrust in any room, especially since stucco molding can be on any theme.

This material comes in a wide range of colors, but the most popular are pastel shades. This is exactly what you need for dark corridors.

The technology for working with this fabric is unusual: twisted rolls are immersed in hot water for 5-10 minutes, after which they are allowed to soften for 8-9 hours. So, the canvas undergoes secondary shrinkage, and there will be no divergence of the seams after drying. Such material will last forever, which affected its price.

Color palette

Right choice The color scheme will show off the mediocre room favorably and add coziness. Most often, there is no natural light in the corridor, so it is better to choose colors for the wallpaper so that they are in harmony with the selected lighting and furniture.

Contrasting

Classic version contrasting combination - black and white. For the corridor white and light colors- this is a good choice, as the room will seem larger. But it will also get dirty faster. However, splashes of black will help hide dirt particles on the wallpaper. For the same reasons, you can use plain canvases, but in two contrasting colors. For example, yellow top and brown bottom when dividing a corridor horizontally in half. Or a dark blue border and a turquoise main fabric.

Bright colors

An interior with distinct lines (doors, baseboards, niches) will be ideally complemented by bright colors and shades. For a large space with wall sconces, you can try both red and burgundy colors.

A brutal man or vamp woman can live in such an environment. A young family with a small child will be positively greeted by an entrance hall with a corridor in bright orange and green colors.

Pastel shades

If there are no small children or animals in the house, then light shades will decorate, refresh and ennoble a small corridor. A little lilac combined with soft blue, ivory with light green - the right choice, and the house will sparkle with new colors.

Ornaments and patterns

Ornaments and patterns are the second thing after color that people pay attention to when looking at wallpaper. With their help you can hide the shortcomings of gluing canvases. But not all patterns are suitable for a small corridor. In an apartment with a narrow and long hallway, it is not recommended to cover the walls with wallpaper with large-figure patterns. They will put psychological pressure and steal space.

Wallpaper with small patterns or monograms will visually enlarge the corridor. Such option will do a room in a classic style that loves space. Vertically striped wallpaper will make the space narrower, while horizontally striped wallpaper will turn it into an endlessly long option.

But those who are lucky enough to have a large corridor can use full-wall frescoes and drawings in their design. Plain wallpaper with small, simple flowers around a doorway or arch in the Provence style looks no worse. In this case, the main color of the canvas can be sand, muted yellow, and the border stripe can be olive or pale green.

Vintage designs are fashionable - laconic or bright. These canvases completely cover the walls or are combined with plain companions.

The use of an abstract pattern is possible in different ways: in large corridors - on the entire wall, in small ones - as an ornament around the perimeter.

Photo wallpaper

This type of wall covering appeared in the Soviet Union in the eighties and was very popular. So much so that there were too many pictures of waterfalls and forests, and compatriots quickly abandoned their use. And now photo wallpapers are gaining popularity again. Over the 30 years of its fame, new products have, of course, appeared. For example, wallpaper with a 3D effect is a beautiful design solution for decorating any room.

But for small areas such as a hallway in a Khrushchev building, you need to choose a photo so that it enlarges and illuminates the corridor. To enhance the effect, it can be illuminated along the contour with LEDs or spotlights.

When choosing photo wallpaper for the corridor, you should remember the rules:

  • a large ornament or 3D effect will visually reduce the parameters of the room;
  • for better psychological perception, bright colors should be combined with pastels;
  • dark colors are not used in large quantities in small corridors;
  • small patterns and colors need a lot of light;
  • when placing mirrors opposite photo wallpapers, not only the space will increase, but also the number of images.

How to glue correctly

Not every wallpaper is suitable for certain walls. The choice depends not only on the quality of the surface, but also on the humidity of the room. Any type of canvas is suitable for dry spaces with smooth walls. In houses and apartments with high humidity it is better to use washable wallpaper, and uneven walls– embossed or options with a dense pattern. Walls with defects can be hidden under glass wallpaper or liquid sheets.

Correct selection glue will allow you to do without repairs for a long time:

  • Paper wallpaper can be glued with glue specifically for this type of canvas or with a universal composition.
  • Vinyl washable, heavy, embossed - special glue for vinyl wallpaper.

  • Vinyl borders require special border adhesive.
  • Paper borders can be glued using universal glue.
  • There is a specialized adhesive for non-woven wallpaper.
  • Self-adhesive borders are glued without the use of adhesives.

Repair work start from the ceiling. After which the walls are prepared.

  • New or porous walls must be primed 24 hours before gluing. This will preserve the surface for subsequent wallpaper changes.

  • Painted walls need to be washed and sanded for better adhesion of glue and wallpaper.

  • From walls with old wallpaper, they need to be removed using water, a spatula or a steam cleaner.

  • To treat walls in damp rooms, you should use a special primer, not forgetting the drying period.

Wallpapering is carried out after preparing the walls, thoroughly washing the floor and preparing tools for work: a bucket or tray for glue, scissors, stationery knife, rubber spatula, a pressure roller for fixing the wallpaper on the walls, a lot of dry white napkins for removing excess glue, a bucket of water and a rag for the floor, table or stepladder.

The answer to the question: “Where to start? “depends on the presence or absence of a window in the corridor and the edges of the wallpaper. If there is a window, always start from it so that the joints are not visible from the light falling on the wallpaper.

In this case, after gluing the first strip, you need to fit the pattern on the second strip along the wall.

In the case of a plain fabric, without adjusting, you need to glue the first strip, check how much it changes in size during gluing, and then cut several strips at once to the desired size.

Wallpaper that requires glue to be applied has different time impregnation. Taking this into account, you can speed up the work (one strip is glued, the second is soaked at this time). Paper wallpapers are soaked for 5 minutes, duplex paper wallpapers are soaked for 7-8 minutes, and the thickest wallpapers are soaked for 9-10 minutes.

It will take 8-10 minutes to impregnate the vinyl strips. The impregnation time is always indicated on the roll insert.

Decoration options

With the help of modern materials, you can use the most fashionable ideas in decorating the corridor. The main thing is to find a balance between the wallpaper, ceiling, floor, baseboard and door panels.

Based on this, choose decor:

  • A very common option is finishing with panels made of MDF, PVC or wood. A reasonable combination of panels and wallpaper will make the corridor cozy and clean.

For example, the lower half of the walls can be covered with panels, and the upper half can be covered with wallpaper.

  • The walls of a large corridor are often decorated with photographs and photographic portraits. This means that such surfaces should be decorated with light-colored wallpaper, allowing them to focus attention on the photographs.

A stylish option is to decorate artificial stone in combination with wallpaper.

It is important to choose the right pattern for such paintings to match the decor.

If there is a staircase leading from the corridor, then the space under the stairs can be equipped functional systems storage - racks, shelves or drawers.

The wood colors used will look gorgeous with natural bamboo or cork wallpaper, or wood-look canvases.

When designing a corridor, you must follow the following recommendations:

  • take into account the size and shape of the layout;
  • do not forget about the age of the residents of the house;
  • remember the animals that live in the house;
  • take into account the styles in which neighboring rooms are decorated;

  • do not use in large quantities dark colors in a small corridor;
  • do not overload the room with pieces of furniture and tacky wallpaper;
  • a double corridor can be decorated with the same wallpaper, or different, but in harmony with each other;
  • for a private summer house or country houses no need to use expensive wall covering: wooden walls Breathable paper wallpaper is quite suitable.

The purchase will be influenced by the number of doors and windows, as well as the presence or absence of a pattern according to which the canvases need to be adjusted.

With a ceiling height of 2.7 m and a corridor perimeter of 12 m, we calculate required amount rolls 53 cm wide and 10 m long. Each piece of wallpaper will produce 3 full stripes, even taking into account adjustments. Every linear meter– these are 2 stripes. Our corridor is 12 m x 2 lanes = 24 lanes. This means you will need to buy 7 rolls (24 strips: 3 strips per roll).

Experts advise buying an additional roll in case of defects.
