The formidable volcano of the island of Santorini is dormant, but does not allow one to completely forget about the danger: through the transparent surface of the water, the contours of a truly gigantic flooded crater are clearly visible, from the depths of which some three hundred years ago, as a result of a new eruption, cliffs rose. Then, in front of the horrified people, the sea boiled right in the center of the cozy bay.
Perhaps Santorini in Greece can be called the island with the most original landscape: sugar cubes of houses are scattered along the edges of volcanic rocks, and the beaches alternate between black and red sand. And the stunning sunsets are fiery and incredible, as if echoes of a long-ago catastrophe. You won't find this anywhere else!

But it has been proven that the poetess gave the world a “sapphic” stanza, but also founded the first school in Hellas for noble girls, teaching them music and dancing, songwriting and manners.
There is probably something inspired in the island itself - after all, the legendary ancient poets Arion and Alcaeus, one of the Seven Sages of ancient Pittacus, lived here...
And today Lesvos, which the Turks called the “golden island”, is a traditional and favorite meeting place for people of art. And not only them. Every year in August, on the night of the full moon, a festival is held on the island in honor of Sappho, which brings together her fans from all over the world.
And a little earlier, in early August, participants of the traditional festival of Lesbos anise liqueur “ouzo”, universally recognized as the best in Greece, come here.

Among the islands of the Ionian Sea, not only Zakynthos, but also Corfu are very popular among tourists. Greece received full control of the beautiful island of Corfu only relatively recently. This happened during an uprising in the mid-19th century. Before this, Corfu was ruled by Venice, Republican France, and then the British Empire. But unlike the rest of the country, this Greek island was never under the rule of Ottoman Turkey.
