Not so easy. To remember English words with translation, many have been invented different ways. The topic of this article is free program for memorizing English words, which is called Anki.

First of all, you need to download it to your computer, to do this just go to. You will be taken to the official website of this program, after which you need to click the “Download” button.

Once clicked, you will be redirected to the bottom of the page where you can select the Anki version for different operating systems. If you have Windows, then select the appropriate tab and click the “Download Anki for Windows” button. You can also download the application for your smartphone and install it. After clicking, wait for it to download and install the application.

The fact is that the application has the ability to install the Russian version of the program, but the translation is done rather clumsily, so much of what is written may not be clear to you. I recommend installing the English version, so you can practice at the same time.

But we forgot about the main thing. What is Anki?

What is Anki, a program for memorizing English words?

Anki is a convenient, easy-to-use program that won't take up much space on your disk. It allows you to display and view flashcards for memorizing English words. However, the problem is that these cards must first be found and downloaded. There is a special section on the website for this, where anyone can add their own set of cards.

These same sets of cards are called decks. You can download them. As you can see, several languages are listed, which tells us that Anki allows you to learn not only English. After selecting your language, you will see a list of available decks. You can even create your own, but this is a rather tedious and time-consuming task, so it is much easier to download ready-made ones. Some flashcard decks allow you to learn English words with pronunciation (such files usually weigh a lot).

For those who find it difficult to understand among the many proposed options, I can offer a universal option - . These cards make it possible to learn English words with transcription. There is no pronunciation, but everything you need is there while maintaining a compact file size.

A couple more interesting decks - and. The cards in both files are voiced and allow you to remember the pronunciation of each word.

How to use the program?

Every day you will be given a certain number of words, which you look through by flipping through the cards. Some words may be familiar to you, some you may see for the first time. Most importantly, this program takes into account the fact stated in the previous sentence. Therefore, below each word you will see three options:

1) If you don't remember or don't know given word, the inscription above the button indicates that it will be shown to you in no more than 1 minute.

2) By clicking “Just Right,” you tell the program to show the word in about 10 minutes. During this time, you will be able to forget him again.

3) “Very easy” speaks for itself: you know the word well, and there is no need for this word to constantly flash before your eyes. 4 days is an excellent period. You never know, maybe by then it will be useful to refresh your memory.

Thanks to this wonderful program for memorizing English words, you can practice every day and increase your vocabulary without spending a lot of time. However, some recommendations can help make working with the program even more effective.

  1. Although it’s easier to download already ready-made kits cards for memorizing English words, try to create your own too. Every time you hear or see a new word or expression in newspapers, books, magazines, write it down and add it to your own deck. Thanks to this move, you will be able to expand your own unique vocabulary, and your English will sound more natural and relaxed every day.
  2. Download pronunciation cards and then record your own voice. As you view the cards, click "More" and then "Record Own Voice." This way you can compare the pronunciation of a native English speaker with your own.
  3. Don't translate into Russian. If your level of language proficiency is high enough, it is better to use a picture or some definition that will help you remember the word instead of a regular translation. You could even put a picture on one side of the card and a word or expression on the other. If you stop translating, your brain will start thinking in English.
  4. Check your stats. On a smartphone, you can open the menu and look at statistics, which will show full information about how successfully you are completing your training. For example, the time of day when you memorize words best!

Applications for mobile phone - convenient way Learn English anytime, anywhere. They allow you to memorize new words, improve grammar and listening skills. And although they are unlikely to replace full-fledged language classes, they will definitely allow you to turn language learning into a good habit.

A program that allows you to learn basic English words without tedious memorization.

The twentieth century proved to us that English has truly become international language. All modern technologies, one way or another, require us to know it. Everywhere, from the label on a product we bought in a supermarket to modern complex languages programming, English is used.

However, it is obvious that reading a label and mastering programming require completely different levels of language proficiency. Today there are many classifications of English proficiency, but all of them can ultimately be reduced to three categories: Basic English, Intermediate and Advanced.

It would seem that the entry level is the simplest, but no :). Exactly on entry level a person masters a minimum vocabulary, as well as correct pronunciation. Accordingly, if a good base is not formed, then there can be no talk of any progress in learning English.

In all modern programs In teaching English there is a concept of an introductory oral course. It is at this stage that a person, not yet knowing the alphabet, much less grammar, first encounters foreign language and begins to remember certain words, as well as their pronunciation.

Previously, the implementation of such a course required the presence of a tutor, but now it can easily be replaced by a regular computer equipped, for example, with a program Basic English.

There are many similar programs, but Basic English differs from them by a carefully selected minimum lexical dictionary (850 words in total), which will be enough to explain to a foreigner, as well as a system for background playback of new words.

The latter allows you not to concentrate specifically on learning new words, but to memorize them in the process of everyday work at the computer (although targeted “cramming” is also available). Of the paid analogues, the ABBYY Tutor program is most similar to Basic English:

Comparison of the program for learning English Basic English with its paid analogue ABBYY Tutor

The obvious disadvantages of Basic English include the lack of a system for testing and cataloging words. More precisely, there is a distribution of words into several sections, but they practically do not reflect the essence of the words included in them:(. Now about the advantages: if you have an Internet connection, the program allows you to connect to the site http://freen.ru, which contains many good reference books materials that complement Basic English classes.

Installation Basic English

Basic English is installed using a standard installer, so let's get straight to working with the program. After installation, its window will launch in full screen mode:

For greater convenience, I advise you to immediately switch to windowed mode and adjust the size of the program window as needed, something like this:

Interface Basic English

Now let's look at all the elements of Basic English. At the very top of the window there is a menu bar. With its help, we can minimize the program to tray (we'll talk about this function later), visit the program's website, and also hide the bottom panel with settings (which, in principle, is not necessary).

The main part of the window is occupied by the word card. Like all similar cards, it consists of the word being directly studied, its transcription and translation into Russian (the minus is the lack of pictures). Each card is automatically spoken in a well-produced voice, so the memorization process speeds up significantly.

The bottom panel can be roughly divided into three blocks: help on vowel pronunciation, a dictionary selection panel, and a control panel. The dictionary selection list allows you to jump to one of five sets of words. The radio button is used to select.

The pronunciation guide only provides general information only about two types of vowel reading (open and closed syllables). In addition, due to a flaw in the program, the reference book is not displayed completely :(. If you want to read it, I advise you to place the cursor in the text and press the Ctrl + A key combination. This combination will select all the text (even invisible) and allow you to copy it (Ctrl combination + C) to the clipboard.

Now you can paste the resulting fragment into any text editor and read it ;).

I suggest you study the control panel more closely:

It starts with a search window. In this window you can enter any English word and, if there is one in the program dictionary, it will be displayed as a card. Thus, Basic English can be used as a primitive (due to the small base of words) translator.

Next are buttons for controlling the playback of words. We can stop/start the sequence of words, and also move forward or backward through the list. In the very bottom line we can configure the number of times each word will be repeated and the interval at which the word will be played again.

Working with the program

Now about the methodology for learning vocabulary. The Basic English program allows you to memorize new words in two modes. Everything we discussed above corresponds to conscious “learning.” In this case, we choose a specific dictionary and try to remember 5 - 10 words a day.

If you wish, you can go back and repeat what you have covered at any time. In this way, all dictionaries of the program can be mastered in three months. However, you can also try alternative method unconscious memorization.

To do this, click the “Hide to tray” button on the menu bar. The program will go into minimized mode, but will continue to work!

Each time you pronounce a new word, along with its transcription and translation, it will appear in a pop-up window above the Basic English tray icon. This makes it possible to learn new vocabulary three times faster than conventional methods, while simultaneously doing your daily work on your PC!

conclusions

Basic English is not without certain shortcomings, but it allows us to look at the issue of learning English from a new point of view, giving us alternative way training. If you are tired of cramming and want to spend less time studying, try using the method offered by Basic English.
