What types of roofs are there on garages? What is the best way to cover a garage roof? Insulation of garage attic roofs

The types of roofs for a garage are quite different, here the area of the building comes first. The larger it is, the more stingrays there will be.
Garage roofs are also divided according to the material they are made of, so they also have different weight. And the heavier the roof, the more powerful the frame must be made.
Today we will look at the construction of a garage roof. You will have the opportunity to watch a video of a garage roof with your own hands and from the photo you will be able to see their varieties.

Types of roofs and roofing materials

First, you need to consider what they are and then choose the right material and determine what to make the garage roof from. The roof of a garage can be done independently; you don’t need to be a great specialist, but of course you need to have an idea.
Moreover, you can only make simple options. First you will need to properly study its design.
For these purposes, you can consider the two most popular types of roofs. Each has its own design features.

Attention: First of all, before purchasing material, you need to make a design for the garage roof. Then you can correctly calculate the amount of material.

Shed roof

A flat garage roof is suitable for a small room. This type of roof is the easiest to implement. Most often seen frame garage with a flat roof.
It is quite easy to assemble; installation instructions are provided upon sale. The same is done wooden roof garage in buildings where there is no big square land and there is no way to increase it.

So:

  • The support for it is the walls of the building, erected to different heights, and the rafter system is the simplest.
  • The level of slope of a given roof may vary. It should be selected based on climatic conditions (including the presence of constantly blowing winds) and the selected material for roofing.
  • Tilt angle pitched roof can be done from 0 to 60 degrees. It is not recommended to make the roof slope greater than this value. The properties of the material chosen to cover the roof will determine the amount of its slope (slope).

Attention: Than bigger roof along the plane, the greater the slope should be. This will reduce the load on the frame and precipitation will be better removed.

  • The basis for the construction of any roof is the rafters. The rafter system is made from well-dried spruce or pine boards and beams, which are pre-impregnated with an antiseptic.
    It is he who serves as protection wooden structures from fire, dampness, insect pests. For the construction of a shed roof, an inclined rafter system is more suitable than others.

Gable roof

A one-car garage with a gable roof can be seen quite often. We have instructions on how to install it on our website.

So:

  • Gable roof garage except aesthetic benefits It also has purely practical ones. It makes it possible to create a comfortable attic space. The simplest form gable roof has the shape of an isosceles triangle.
  • There is nothing complicated in its design if you have the desire and necessary materials and tools. The rafter system and roofing are the components of any roof.
    The rafter legs are installed in rows in pairs and connected top part in the area of the roof ridge, thereby forming its frame. The lower part of the rafters rests on the mauerlat (horizontal beam), which in turn is attached with anchors to the walls of the building.
  • The width of the roof and its height to the ridge are necessary to calculate the amount of materials required. To calculate the height of the ridge and the length of the rafter leg, measurements of the width of the walls of the building and the angle of inclination of the roof are needed.
  • Installation rafter system This is done in stages, starting with strengthening the Mauerlat and ending with the installation of sheathing for further covering of the roof with the selected material. If the Mauerlat is attached to the walls of a building made of concrete or brick, then waterproofing must be done between them (see). A roofing material lining can serve as it.

Materials for making a roof

The garage roof can be made from different materials. They have quite different price and here it all depends on the state of your wallet.
A garage with a tile roof will be much more expensive than a slate roof. But laying metal tiles will take less time. But there are other materials that are used quite often.

Ruberoid

This one is wide famous material considered the easiest to use and inexpensive. One roll of roofing felt is enough to cover 10 square meters. meters of roof.

So:

  • Laying roofing felt (see) on a concrete base is done only after it has been completely cleaned of old coating and dirt. A layer of hot bitumen mastic is applied to the concrete, and immediately, without waiting for it to cool, a layer of roofing felt is laid. To ensure that the material adheres tightly to the surface, it is leveled with a special roller.
  • Fused roofing felt can be laid without clearing the surface of the old coating. Using a gas burner, a roll of roofing material is heated until the adhesive layer begins to melt, and pressed tightly to the surface, rolled out. The canvas is also leveled using a roller.
  • Ruberoid coating requires periodic inspection to timely identify damage and carry out the necessary repairs.

Galvanized iron for roofing

Galvanized iron roof is different for a long time operation and relative cheapness, but has some disadvantages.

So:
  • Sheets of iron are laid overlapping from bottom to top, starting from the bottom corner of the roof. Attached with self-tapping screws with steel spacers.
  • Installation of sheets with locking system allows you to avoid damage to the material, since it is carried out without making through holes, which prevents the penetration of moisture.
  • To extend the life of your roof, you should paint it. Acrylic primer-enamel for galvanized iron will well protect the zinc layer from the negative effects of weather conditions.

Bituminous shingles

Soft tiles are a new generation of roofing material. Made from cellulose coated with bitumen.
Essentially, these are multi-colored pieces of roofing felt different shapes, treated with polymers for strength. The roof from it turns out to be similar to a classic tiled one, but in a modern design.

So:

  • The composition of this modern material: fiberglass, modified bitumen and stone pavement. It is recommended to lay it at a temperature of at least 5 degrees, otherwise it becomes fragile.
  • Installation of tile strips begins from the bottom in the center, and then proceeds along the eaves in vertical rows. Each row is shifted relative to the previous one. This is done to form a beautiful pattern.
  • Sheets of soft tiles are fastened with galvanized nails. The edges of the strips (shingles) are glued bitumen mastic, which improves waterproofing.
  • To obtain a roof of uniform color, it is recommended to mix tiles from different packages.

Slate

Traditional asbestos-cement slate is most often used for roofing.

Installation and Installation slate covering are carried out similarly to the installation of a roof made of corrugated sheets. The slate is attached to the prepared surface using slate nails or special screws.

Attention: You must first drill holes in the slate sheets. Internal corners Each sheet is cut diagonally to ensure a tight fit of the slate.

IN Lately Modern roofing coverings, for example, corrugated sheeting (see), are more popular. It is superior to slate in both ease of installation and service life.

Ondulin

Another popular one modern material for roofing.

So:

  • Made from cellulose and impregnated with bitumen, ondulin is much more environmentally friendly materials, which contain asbestos. This material provides good waterproofing and prevents noise penetration.
  • During installation, you need to pay attention to the gaps that may form at the junction of the slopes. They must be sealed with a profile seal.

Attention: It is not recommended to walk on an ondulin roof; it does not support heavy weight. To avoid rapid fading of the material, when purchasing it, you should choose a reliable manufacturer.

Polycarbonate

Garage roofs can be covered with 2 types of polycarbonate: monolithic and cellular:

  • Monolithic sheets resemble glass in appearance and properties, but they are stronger and lighter. Well suited for working on flat surfaces.

Attention: Due to the cost being significantly higher than other materials, monolithic polycarbonate is not in demand.

  • Cellular polycarbonate, on the contrary, has gained great popularity. Its advantages in flexibility and lightness allow it to be used in the construction of fantasy structures. It stands significantly lower than its brother, and resists fire and chemically active environments well.
  • The high strength of cellular (or cellular) polycarbonate has a positive effect on its service life.

The garage roof can be covered with any of the listed materials, you just need to choose the one that is most suitable in your case.

One of the important stages of garage construction, the construction of the roof, often raises a lot of questions. What to choose: an attic or flat roof, red corrugated sheeting or cheap slate, make a “warm” floor or insulate the slopes themselves? And below you will learn how to make a garage roof with your own hands, using examples of gable and shed roof options.

First of all, you must find out what kind of garage you actually need: a heated box or a cold box that can only hide the car from snow and rain?

Now decide on the type of roof itself:

  • flat - it involves pouring a concrete floor or installing its factory slabs (usually round-hollow), using a crane to lay them;
  • lean-to - the easiest option for those who plan to make a roof for the garage with their own hands;
  • gable roof is a more complex and labor-intensive roof option that requires certain construction skills and high consumption of materials.

Alternatively, consider a unit above the second floor garage. Depending on the roof used, it is worth deciding on the option for its insulation:

  • flat is insulated along the top of the slab;
  • single-pitch is usually insulated by laying thermal insulation material between the rafters;
  • a gable roof is insulated either like a single-pitched roof, or by placing the insulation above the garage in a horizontal ceiling.

Select the appropriate roofing material for your roof type.

All these actions should be performed at the design stage, since its weight and the load that the roof will exert on the foundation depend on the chosen structure (this will affect the size of the foundation structure and its type: columnar, strip or base slab along the entire perimeter of the garage).

DIY flat roof for garage

It is recommended that such roofing be carried out with the assistance of specialists. All because ready-made slabs You will not be able to lay the floors without a team of crane operators. In addition, pouring a concrete floor manually will require a large volume of already ready-mixed concrete(which allows this procedure to be done in one go), reinforcement cages, formwork and assistants.

When pouring a monolithic concrete slab in a garage, it is usually made horizontal, and the slope is created later by laying insulation (for example, expanded clay).

If circular hollow-core floor slabs are installed, then a slope can be created during installation (by making the facade wall higher than the others: height differences should form a slope of at least 2 cm per 1 m of slab length).

Do-it-yourself pitched roof for a garage

The most affordable and simplest option for beginners planning to make a garage roof with their own hands is pitched roof. Moreover, wooden or metal tanks can be used as load-bearing structures.

  • Supporting structures (rafters) are laid along the garage (it is important that façade wall was higher than the others, which makes it possible to make the slope necessary for the roofing material) and rest on a mauerlat (beam with a cross-section of at least 10x10 cm). It is worth laying a waterproofing layer under the Mauerlat (pieces of roofing felt are perfect).
  • Using a construction stapler, a wind and moisture protective membrane is secured to the top of the rafters.
  • Next, a wooden counter batten is attached along the rafters, onto which the sheathing is fixed (with a certain pitch or continuous, depending on the roofing material).
  • The roofing material is laid in accordance with the technology of this process developed by the manufacturer.
  • Roof insulation. It is carried out depending on the chosen option (in the plane of the ceiling or between the rafters). Insulation with inside should be protected with a layer of vapor barrier.

Do-it-yourself gable roof for a garage

For arrangement gable roof you will need a device more complex option load-bearing structure. Moreover, if the roofing material needs a significant slope (a large amount of snow is retained on the roof or rainwater can get under it under a strong wind), then it is better to make not an attic, but an attic (there will be a used room inside it).

How to repair a soft roof?

To complete the entire complex repair work soft roof construction you will need the following set of tools:

  • roofing felt;
  • broom;
  • tin bucket;
  • bitumen mastic;
  • burner and gas cylinder;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • axe.

Before starting repairs, it is recommended to take into account the nature of the roof. In many cases, garages are built in one row. However, if you decide to make a complete renovation, then you need to contact your neighbors and warn them about it. Otherwise, it’s unlikely that anyone will be happy that part of their roof was destroyed.

Attention! Hard roof repairs should only be done in warm, dry weather.

Identifying problem areas

Remove all leaves and other contaminants from the roof surface. After this, carefully inspect the roof again and decide what kind of repair it should be - partial or complete. If the roof is more than 10 years old, then most likely bulges, cracks, and seams have come apart. Having identified a problem area, do not rush to remove everything. It is enough to cut it crosswise and press tightly. If there are cracks, cut them with an ax and then clean them of debris and dust. To do this, use gas burner and a hairdryer.

Covering the garage roof with roofing felt

One of the most simple ways repair the roof - cover it with roofing felt. The main advantage of this material is its low cost. Plus it's beautiful waterproofing material, protecting the garage roof from leaks.

Previously made holes can be covered with roofing felt. For partial repair it should be cut into small pieces. Apply this piece to the hole and press firmly. A layer of resin or mastic is applied on top of it. After this, the bent roofing material can be pressed again and covered with mastic.

Attention! The cut piece of roofing felt must be 20 cm larger than the damaged area. Thus, you will ensure high-quality waterproofing. Then you can simply leave everything as is and lay a new layer of roofing felt over the entire surface of the roof.

How to lay roofing felt on a garage roof

If you plan to cover the roof with a new layer of roofing material, then you should spread it on the surface and wait a day. To complete the work you will need resin (to connect the old roofing felt with the new one). It will also protect all joints from possible leaks. Typically, the resin is prepared in a tin bucket or some other container that is subject to further disposal. To do this, the tar is melted with a burner to the consistency of thick sour cream.

Once the resin is ready, you can fill part of the roof with it, and then lay down the roofing material. Then go over its entire surface. The next sheet should be overlapped towards the slope by 12 cm. For this reason, laying the first sheet should start from the bottom point.

Attention! If bubbles form while laying roofing felt, poke a hole (small) and press firmly on the problem area. If necessary, this place must be filled with resin.

It will take 12 hours for the first layer of roofing material to dry. Then you can install the second layer. Do not forget to ensure that the joints of the first and second layers do not coincide in any way. This will eliminate the possibility of moisture penetrating into the soft roof.

If there are places adjacent to the wall, then it is important to pay special attention to them. Perhaps it would be relevant to use a rigid sheet. Most likely you will need to lay several layers of roofing material in the corner. Moreover, each layer must dry well.

Attention! If the roof slope angle is less than 15°, then less than four layers of roofing material will be needed. If the slope of the slope is more than 16°, then you need to use at least two layers.

Features of garage roof waterproofing

There is another way to make waterproofing. To do this, it is not at all necessary to use roofing felt. You can use a special welding material like bikrost. It is ideal for soft roofing.

The technology for its application is as follows:
  • cleaning and priming of the roof;
  • Rolling out the bicrost roll if necessary. You should not immediately roll out the roll along the entire roof;
  • Please note that the bottom layer of bicrost is represented by oxidized bitumen, which can be heated with a burner;
  • during heating, carefully ensure that the material fits as tightly as possible to the roof at the edges and corners;
  • each subsequent sheet of material must be overlapped by up to 70 mm;
  • There is no need to delay the work process. Everything needs to be done efficiently and quickly. This is primarily due to the fact that bitumen sets very quickly. Tearing it off the roof can cause damage.

As you can see, the technology for waterproofing a bicrost roof is almost no different from that used when laying roofing felt. The only advantage is that you don't have to prepare the resin. Believe me, this is a painstaking and unpleasant process. But the result will not be worse.

How to repair a hard roof

If corrugated sheeting, rather than resin, is used to cover the garage, then the nature of its repair will naturally be different. Most likely, it is easier to replace damaged sheets. Although there are cases when a tree has fallen on the roof of the garage, as a result of which it is necessary to resort to major repairs, which also include the installation of sheathing.

If partial repairs are required, then, first of all, you need to dismantle the old sheet and lay a new one. It is important that it does not coincide in wavelength. In addition, it is important to carefully ensure that correct overlap. The sheet is screwed with special self-tapping screws designed for corrugated sheets.

Attention! If the length of the garage is 6 meters, and the sheet of material is 1 meter, then 12 sheets of corrugated sheeting will be needed for the entire roof.

If the garage is covered with metal tiles, then its repair is practically no different. The only thing that needs to be controlled are the locks connecting the tiles.

By following our recommendations, you can do high-quality repairs roofing, which will significantly reduce costs than having to create it anew. And do not forget that often the roof requires partial repair, which will save your money. But the main thing is that you can do all the work yourself.

It’s not difficult to build a simple garage roof with your own hands. But to do this correctly, you need to prepare well in advance. After all, you will have to take into account a number important points– when and why to do insulation, whether a vapor barrier is needed and what to do to eliminate possible leaks. In addition, depending on the condition and location of the building, the construction strategy will differ significantly.

What should you think about before installing a roof?

The first thing you need to decide is the purpose of the garage. If it is unheated and will be used only for storing the car, the roof can be anything as long as it does not leak. But if the garage is planned to be warm or will be warmed up from time to time, used as a workshop or a local “café for car enthusiasts”, the roof must be insulated!
Uninsulated metal roof will condense, providing an unforgettable indoor rain experience in winter. A wooden or concrete one will heat up, melting the snow outside. And this is fraught with ice stalactites and stalagmites, which will have to be knocked down regularly. And it’s good if the roof slope is on the back wall, and not in front of the gate.

If you have a hood, it is also better to insulate it and raise it above the roof - so as not to drown the same snow.

Do not forget about the minimum slope with the obligatory drainage for a flat roof. Otherwise, rain and snow may linger in uneven areas, which cannot be avoided when self-construction. And this is fraught with possible leaks or destruction of the roof in a few years.

And, of course, it is better to correctly assess your strengths in advance and draw up an estimate. Because sometimes cheap option not suitable due to its complexity in the device with my own hands, and expensive material can be replaced with something cheaper. After all, a garage does not require a special margin of safety and high environmental friendliness of the roof.

Do-it-yourself concrete roof for a garage

The simplest option is to lay concrete slabs. But you can’t do it without a crane. If its use is impossible for some reason, you will have to do concrete screed on one's own.
For this you will need:

Among the tools you should think about in advance:

It greatly simplifies working with concrete, especially if your hand is not yet full, as is clearly shown in the video:

Pouring a concrete garage roof

So, all the materials are stored, the tools are ready and you can start building the roof. For this:

  1. Floor beams - pipes, channels or I-beams - are laid on the walls. In the first two options, the roof will be poured on top. If the beams are made of I-beams, boards or metal sheets, onto which concrete will be poured. When installing an insulated roof, foam plastic can be laid under the screed.
  2. The reinforcing mesh is knitted. It is important not to forget that the rods should not touch the formwork, because then rust may begin to appear at the ends. But reinforcement can be welded to the floor beams. The advantage of I-beams is the ability to fill “layer by layer” - one row at a time. This is especially important when pouring it yourself, since it’s definitely not possible to do the entire roof at once.
  3. The formwork is fixed. To make it easier to tear it off from the concrete, the inner walls must be coated with used machine oil or any other cheap oil. The boards should fit as tightly as possible! Concrete “milk” coming through the cracks significantly worsens the quality of the monolithic floor.
  4. The reinforced mesh is poured with concrete mixture, be sure to be bayoneted and smoothed according to the rule. If it is possible to order a ready-made concrete mixture to pour the entire roof at once, you must have at least two assistants to level the mixture with shovels. It’s better to use a deep vibrator when pouring like this, which will help quickly remove air from the mixture.
  5. Concrete screed closes up plastic film and be sure to water regularly. Without watering, concrete will not gain the necessary strength.
  6. After the screed has set, all cracks must be closed. This is done by ironing - it crumbles onto the surface thin layer cement and rubbed in with regular paint brush. The procedure continues until all cracks are sealed.
  7. All joints in the screed are coated with mastic reinforced with serpyanka. The same applies to the exit point of the ventilation pipe and the upper ribs of the channels.
  8. To ensure the required level of water resistance, a built-up waterproofing layer is laid on top of the concrete. Be sure to cover the ends of the concrete floor! To do this, the concrete is coated with a primer, and the waterproofing itself is spread in two layers - for reliability. To ensure that the waterproofing does not lag behind, the edges can be pressed with aluminum strips. The dowels are filled with bitumen, and the planks themselves are coated with the same sickle-reinforced mastic.

Concrete roof restoration

But what to do if you inherited a garage? And along with the building, the new owner also received associated problems in the form of a leaking roof and crumbling concrete floor? In this case, restoring the roof will not be much simpler than pouring a new one:

You can also restore a leaking roof by making a ceiling of corrugated board or slate on top. To do this, without removing the old roof covering, logs are laid and secured with anchors. Joints around the perimeter are sealed polyurethane foam– for sealing and to prevent the entire ceiling from being lifted by the wind.

The sheathing is fixed to the joists. If the metal is thin, then it is advisable to do the lathing frequently. Edges are protected metal corners, preventing moisture from leaking from below. After the roof covering is laid, a wind strip must be installed.

It is also called end - it protects the ends of the roof from water entering from above.

A very accessible description of the restoration of a garage roof using corrugated sheets is shown in the video:

DIY wooden garage roof

If concrete works seem complicated and time-consuming, the garage roof can be made of wood. More precisely, the rafter system will be wooden, but the roofing itself can be anything from metal to ceramic.

Shed garage roof

This is the simplest option that does not require serious calculations and special construction skills. The only thing you have to take into account with a detached garage is the prevailing wind direction. The lower edge of a pitched roof should be on the windward side - that is, on the side from which the wind most often blows. Otherwise, strong gusts can simply tear off the roof.

Such a roof is extremely simple to erect:

  1. A support board is attached to the wall of the house above the level of the garage wall. With a purlin width of up to 4.5 meters, the rafters will only be placed on the support board and the garage wall. If the width of the garage is planned to be up to 6 m, you will also have to attach a support at the same level with the wall of the garage, on which the rafter leg will rest, providing support for the long rafter.
  2. If the walls of the garage are brick or concrete, a mauerlat made of 15x10 cm or 15x15 cm timber is attached along the upper edge. It provides the necessary strength to the entire roofing structure, redistributing the load on the wall. To prevent the wood from rotting, the timber must be treated with an antiseptic and several layers of waterproofing placed under it.
  3. The rafters are attached to the mauerlat either with an outlet beyond the wall or without an outlet. You can calculate the length of the rafters and the angle of inclination using the table.
  4. The waterproofing is laid directly on the rafters. It is fixed on top with counter-lattice bars, on which the lathing is then placed. The waterproofing is laid with an overlap; the overlaps are taped with butyl rubber tape. You can also place tape under the counter-lattice as a seal to seal the puncture sites.
  5. Depending on the selected roofing and the angle of inclination, the lathing can be either continuous or sparse. This should be taken into account, otherwise the roof may simply fail under critical loads.

Gable roof garage

This option for a DIY device is much more complicated and requires serious calculations. Yes, and more material will also be required. For example, insufficient thickness of rafters can lead to sagging of the roof, resulting in stagnation of snow and bursting rafters due to weight. And even with required thickness a large number of knots in timber can lead to the same results. But such a garage looks presentable, and the space under the roof can be used for storing household equipment.

The principle of a gable roof:

  1. It is important to decide on the height of the roof - if the roof is too high, the wind will try to topple it, and if it is too low, it can lift it up.
  2. The rafter system is assembled - triangles consisting of rafter legs and tie rods. For garages wider than 6 meters, a more complex system using crossbars or headstocks will be required.
  3. You can either collect individual elements on the ground, lifting them as needed, or immediately on the walls. The first option is more suitable for garages, since the ceiling does not spread and in this case it is extremely inconvenient to walk along the edges of the walls.
  4. First, the outer rafters are installed at the ends of the garage. A cord is stretched between them at the highest point, which determines the level of the roof. After this you can attach all the rest rafter legs. They are fixed with temporary jibs.
  5. The ridge girder is attached last. To prevent the rafters from moving, they are secured using the cutting method. Also to simplify the work ridge beam can be fixed with building corners without cutting out corners.
  6. The waterproofing is rolled out and fixed with a batten along the rafters. If you use a waterproofing membrane, it can act as a temporary roof for two to three months, depending on the manufacturer. You need to pay attention to ultraviolet resistance, otherwise the waterproofing can quickly become unusable, simply starting to crumble.
  7. The sheathing is being filled. The frequency depends on the roof covering. It is better to do it more often than to repair the roof urgently if the roof cannot withstand the pressure of snow.

Regardless of the chosen roofing covering, special attention should be paid to the ridge unit. A poorly made ridge is a guarantee of a leaking roof and the formation of condensation, since the ridge serves as ventilation for the roofing pie.

For example, for a roof made of metal tiles, the distance between the lathing in the ridge unit should be no less than 3 cm and no more than 5 cm. And the waterproofing should be located on the roof slopes at a distance of 20 cm. The ridge itself is laid on breathable insulation and fastened with self-tapping screws.

For ventilated roof ridge with soft roof You can use either ready-made solutions in the form of a ridge aerator or make the design yourself. The first method is much simpler, but significantly increases the cost of construction.

The second option will require a little more effort, but it will save you money. The construction of a ventilated ridge with your own hands begins with cutting a ventilation gap in the continuous sheathing. Next, 5x5 cm bars are attached above the ventilated hole, on which they are laid OSB sheets. To protect roofing pie from dust and insects, you can also secure metal mesh, which is wrapped on bars.

conclusions

To summarize, we can draw the following conclusions when building a garage roof with your own hands:

  • it is better to restore a concrete garage roof using corrugated sheeting - it is easier and cheaper;
  • concrete work must be carried out with an assistant, otherwise the roof will have to be poured in parts and the joints sealed;
  • roof insulation is a must for protection against condensation;
  • For concrete roof built-up waterproofing is used on concrete floors; for wood floors, a windproof membrane is used to prevent the formation of condensation;
  • the thickness of the rafters must be sufficient to withstand the maximum snow load if the roof slope is small, it is better to do it with a margin of safety;
  • if you choose corrugated sheeting as the cheapest option, you should pay close attention to the quality of the decorative coating - unscrupulous manufacturers may peel it off within a year;

In times of shortage of materials, outbuildings were built from the remains of boards and everything that was left after the construction of the house. Of course, this did not cause them to lose functionality, but they significantly spoiled the appearance of the site. Teter garage is built as part of an architectural ensemble, made in the same style and color scheme. In this article we will tell you how to make a high-quality gable roof for a garage with your own hands, we will figure out how to draw up a project and carry out installation correctly.

A gable roof is a simple structure consisting of two inclined planes, called roof slopes. They rest on the outer walls of the garage and converge at the ridge connection, which is the highest point of the roof. The two slopes and the base of the roof form an isosceles triangle. This method garage floors have the following advantages compared to other options:

  1. Ensuring the independent removal of snow and rainwater from the roof. Inclined surface slopes of a gable roof contribute to the removal of water and snow masses, due to which the load on rafter frame does not increase, and the need to clear the roof of snow rarely arises. In regions with high rainfall in winter time gable garage roof - real alternative single-pitch structures, which often fall during snowfalls.
  2. Economical. To make a gable roof with your own hands, you need a few building materials. The lumber from which the rafter frame and roofing materials are made have an affordable price, so the total cost of covering a garage will not be much higher than the cost of constructing lean-to analogues of the same area.
  3. Easy to assemble. A separate savings item could be the refusal to involve professional workers in the construction of the roof, since even an inexperienced craftsman can correctly make a gable roof for a garage with his own hands.
  4. High energy efficiency. Thanks to its shape, a gable roof reduces energy losses when heating rooms. It is considered the most energy-efficient way to cover commercial buildings. Therefore, if you install heating in the garage, a do-it-yourself gable roof is the most correct option.
  5. Organization of storage. The garage, first of all, is reserved for the maintenance of cars and other equipment, however, it must have space for storing seasonal tools, wheels and spare parts. The gable roof allows you to organize attic spacious shelving, they are easily made with your own hands in accordance with the needs of the owners.

Note! A garage with a gable roof, unlike single-pitch ones, looks like an independent structure. It can be located not only close to home, but in any convenient location plot. Experienced craftsmen It is recommended to make slopes with a slope of 20-30 degrees and use for covering the roofing material that was used for the house in order to maintain a uniform design style.

Design

The first step in building a gable roof for a garage with your own hands is to create a project reflecting the main design parameters. To begin work, you need to determine three main characteristics: the height of the ridge, the slope of the slopes and the type of roofing. Calculations when creating a project are performed taking into account the loads placed on the frame elements. Counting total weight roof to determine how deep the foundation is required. To sketch a working diagram, you need to correctly make the following calculations:

Important! The choice of suitable roofing material depends on the angle of inclination of the slopes. A slope of 20-30 degrees, which most experienced roofers recommend for a garage roof, allows you to use soft tiles, corrugated sheets, slate or roll materials. But metal tiles, popular for DIY construction, require a slope slope of 35 degrees or more.

Rafter frame

The basis of each gable roof is a rafter frame, a set of elements that ensure the stability and stability of the roof structure. The garage roof is built on the basis of rafters made of wood coniferous species, impregnated with antiseptic and fire-resistant substances. Depending on the layout of the building, weight and coverage area of the roofing material, use 2 different types rafter systems:

Note! When calculating the rafter system, the weight of its elements is taken into account, since it increases the load placed on the foundation. To avoid overloading, leading to deformation of the base of the building, a balance should be maintained between the thickness of the section and the number of rafters. The size of lumber is selected in accordance with tables that take into account the length of the rafters and the pitch between them.

Installation

The most crucial moment if you are building a roof with your own hands is the installation itself. To avoid mistakes, it is better to sketch out a schematic drawing that reflects all the dimensions of the frame elements, the distance between them, and the method of fastening. The work is performed in the following order:

Note! If the garage premises will be heated, the slopes will be thermally insulated, as well. For this purpose, non-flammable fiber insulation is used, for example, basalt wool or polystyrene foam.

One of important elements Any building is its roof, which is exposed to various physical and climatic influences. Its reliability and service life depend on the chosen material for its covering - the roof. Modern market offers many types of such finishing materials that can be selected for certain climatic conditions and features of the structure on which they will be used.

Peculiarities

The roof of the garage and its roofing are practically no different from others standard designs this type: they are used to protect the main building from moisture. But those found on vehicle “homes” are almost always simple. This is due to the fact that when building such systems there is no need to create beautiful designs for decoration purposes. The materials usually used are the same products that are used in construction. standard roofs industrial or residential facilities. Very often today, instead of the usual ones, insulated mansard roofs are made, the rooms under which can be turned into small housing in the future. But such designs are relatively expensive and rare.

Materials

The installation of a roof on a garage involves the formation of a reliable protective layer that will prevent moisture from penetrating into the building. Therefore, for such purposes, in most cases, coatings from several layers are used.

The following products can be used as a top roof covering:

  • Ceramic tiles. The material can be classified as environmentally friendly and durable. Among the advantages are anti-corrosion resistance, minimal destruction by microorganisms, as well as the ability to withstand significant differences temperatures The disadvantages include high cost, as well as significant weight, which forces ceramic tiles to be laid only on durable frames, the slope of which does not exceed 12 degrees.

An alternative to this product today is metal tiles, which are lightweight and easy to install.

  • Ondulin has proven itself well as a roofing material. A roof made from it can last more than 20 years, and it itself is practically not destroyed under the influence of external negative factors. It is distinguished by its relatively light weight and low cost. This combination allows you to form a roof not only cheaply, but also quickly. The only drawback can be considered the flammability of ondulin, but if you minimize the likelihood of its ignition under the influence external factors, then it will be the best option when building a garage.

  • Corrugated sheet appeared on the market for a long time, but only recently gained enormous popularity. This material is a thin sheet of metal that is given a certain shape to increase its strength. To protect steel from rapid corrosion, the upper layers of the product are coated with galvanization and polymer compounds that prevent moisture from entering the metal itself. Products of this type are lightweight, easy to install and durable. There are many of them on the market color options. Such coatings are very durable, but if the top one is damaged protective layer, then the metal begins to rust very quickly. Therefore, it is advisable to use only high-quality products from well-known manufacturers for roofing.

  • Slate obtained from various shale rocks, which are pressed in special machines. This roofing material resists temperature changes well and is also not afraid of exposure to various chemicals. It does not support combustion. However, slate sheets are heavy. This, in turn, complicates installation. They are also very fragile, so it is advisable to work with them carefully and using a special tool.

  • Galvanized steel sheets outwardly they are smooth sheets that are attached to the base with special screws or nails. The disadvantage can be considered high “noise” - the material makes loud sounds in strong winds and rain, as well as the likelihood of corrosion processes occurring with constant exposure to moisture.
  • Soft tiles. Outwardly, it resembles roofing felt, but has a more beautiful pattern. It is produced in the form of small parts of various sizes and shapes. The material is very durable, but requires a perfectly flat surface for installation, so you need to nail additional sheets of moisture-resistant plywood or OSB to the rafters, and then lay such tiles on them.

Waterproofing materials should also be considered.

  • Ruberoid It is produced in rolls that cover roofs to prevent leaks. Please note that it can be used as an underlayment or as the main roofing material. It is used quite rarely on wooden bases, since the canvas does not have a design design and is also highly flammable. At the same time, this universal product is practically indispensable for flat roofs, where it protects concrete bases.

  • Bikrost. This is another type of waterproofing substance. Use it as a substrate. In many properties it resembles roofing felt.
  • Bitumen or liquid rubber. Such materials are obtained from substances based on petroleum products, and are used to protect pitched concrete roofs. In molten hot form, these compositions are simply applied to the base. This leads to the formation of a uniform layer that fills all the cracks and does not allow water to penetrate into them.

Types of structures

Today, when constructing garages, you can use one of several types of roofs:

  • Flat. The angle of inclination of such a plane is minimal (up to 3-5 degrees) or completely absent. Such structures in most cases are monolithic concrete floors. They are found in large industrial garages, which are built of brick or other durable material. In everyday life, a flat roof can be made of wood, but it will not be able to hold a large weight of snow for a long time in winter.

  • Single-pitch. This type of roof is distinguished by the presence of one plane, which is located at a slope relative to the frame. The device of this design is the simplest. You can even build it yourself without the appropriate skills. The angle of inclination here often does not exceed 30 degrees. This is due to the fact that the width of the roof is significant and if the slope is increased, the base simply may not withstand the load.

  • Gable. Roofs of this kind are the most common and practical. The systems are distinguished by their simplicity and speed of construction. The angle of such surfaces can be adjusted to 45 degrees. Please note that the slope may be different on each side of the slope. This approach allows you to give the structure the shape of an irregular triangle. The practicality of the system has long been known. If you choose the right height, you can create a small attic under the roof for storing things. A variation of this design are mansard roofs. They differ in the height of the room under the roof, which allows you to place a living space here. But this option for garages, as already mentioned, is not so common.

Slope angle

Today, garage buildings can have different shape and structure. It all depends on the needs of the specific owner. But during construction or renovation, it is important to choose the right roof slope.

The ability of the surface to withstand various loads, as well as the possibility of coating with various materials, depends on this parameter.

There is no universal angle for the slope of a garage roof.

It all depends on the finishing materials with which it will be covered:

  • Up to 20 degrees. Such roofs are usually pitched. For such surfaces, coatings such as asbestos cement sheets, clay tiles, steel sheet.
  • 20-30 degrees. This angle is the best option for most types of garage roofs. This slope allows snow not to linger, and also allows the use of almost all substances for finishing, from soft tiles, slate to various roll coverings. Please note that previously this factor was usually not taken into account during construction, so the rise of the structure does not always correspond to this value.

  • 35 degrees or more. This angle is steep, which is not always good for roofing material. For such slopes, experts recommend using metal tiles that can withstand this load. It is not advisable to lay this material on roofs with a lower slope. Therefore, if you plan to use this finishing product, you will first have to lift the entire system if it does not meet the specifications.

When choosing the angle and material for the ceiling, it is also important to consider several other factors:

  • Wind power. It is important to determine the maximum wind load indicators and their direction. For this purpose, special wind maps are used, which show the percentage of wind loads throughout the year.
  • Amount of precipitation. Special attention should be given to snow, as it can accumulate and become compacted. If there is a lot of such precipitation, then it is better to use roofs with an angle of more than 20 degrees. When it is not possible to do this, the frame of the structure should be strengthened as much as possible so that it can withstand the upcoming loads.

How to calculate the amount of materials?

Self-installation of the roof very often involves the purchase roofing materials. But before you go to the store, you should count the quantity of this product.

The algorithm for calculating material volumes can be reduced to the following sequential operations:

  • Finding the angle of inclination. It is needed to calculate the surface area. This operation can be carried out using mathematical formulas. To avoid using trigonometry, the easiest way to find the width of the slope is to use the Pythagorean formula. Initially, measure the height of the ridge and the distance from the center point to the edge of the roof. Theoretically you can do it right triangle. Having obtained the values of the legs, you can find out the length of the hypotenuse. For this purpose they use simple formula, where a and b are legs.

Please note that this approach can be used for both single-pitch and gable roofs.

  • Once you know the width of the slope, it is easy to get the total area of the entire roof. To do this, you need to measure the length of the garage along which the material will be laid. The area is calculated by multiplying the width and length by each other.

  • At this stage, you need to find out the volume of finishing materials that are needed to cover a specific area. For gable roofs, calculations should be carried out separately for each half. The technology is quite simple and involves separation total area per size of one roofing unit, taking into account a certain coefficient. For example, if one sheet of corrugated sheeting has an area of 1.1 sq. m, then to cover 10 sq. m of roof should be taken 10 whole sheets. It is important to take into account that during installation some products are slightly stacked on top of each other. The number of sheets may also depend on the width and length of the roof. Very often these numbers are not integers, so the material will have to be cut at the end. In some cases, it is possible to use leftover products for this.

It is not always possible to accurately calculate the number of roofing products. Therefore, it is better to take a little more materials when calculating. But if you know a roofer, then contact him, he will help you calculate this figure with minimum quantity waste.

Waterproofing

Excess moisture inside any room can lead to rapid destruction of all finishing materials. Therefore, when installing roofs, including garages, you should take care of high-quality waterproofing.

Today this problem is solved using several types of materials:

  • Liquid formulations. This includes all bitumen-based products. They are sold in the form of liquid or solid elements, which must be brought to a liquid state before use. Mostly flat roofs with a slight slope are painted with bitumen. Apply the composition using a brush or a special sprayer. In this case, all cracks are completely sealed. Such products are used mainly for concrete roofs, but theoretically they can also cover other substances. Please note that the mixtures can be used both outside and inside the building. Therefore they can be used as aids.

  • Roll materials. Products of this kind are long sheets, which cover the roof frame. They are located directly under the finishing material. Their classic representative is roofing felt. But today, special membrane fabrics are increasingly used for such purposes. Attach them directly to wooden joists using a stapler and staples. It is important that adjacent sheets are laid with a slight overlap. All joints are insulated using cold welding or special tape. Please note that all waterproofing sheets must form a kind of drain. Therefore, the lower ends necessarily protrude beyond the edge of the joists.

Waterproofing is important stage, which must be carried out when arranging the roof.

The service life of the entire structure depends on how well it is performed.

Installation subtleties

The roof finishing technology depends on the design itself and the selected material.

Let's start with coverage reinforced concrete floors, consisting of the following sequential actions:

  • Concrete cleaning. There should be no dirt or large inclusions on the surface of the material, as cleanliness will contribute to better adhesion of the materials.
  • Application of liquid bitumen. Please note that some formulations need to be heated. Cover the surface with special brushes or sprayers.

  • Laying roofing felt. It is laid immediately after the roof has been lubricated with bitumen. This is important, since the composition quickly hardens and loses viscosity. During installation, the roll is gradually spread out and evenly pressed against the base. You can simplify this task using special rollers.
  • Installation of subsequent layers. Their number is often 2-3 pieces. The application algorithm is similar to the previously described principle. But when arranging the next sheets, it is important to take into account the location of the joints. It is desirable that the top layer of roofing material overlaps them. At the very end, the entire roof surface is thoroughly lubricated with bitumen mastic.

Now let's look at the principle of installing structures located at an angle. These operations have many nuances.

The covering of these roofs has several common actions:

  • Arrangement of sheathing. Technically, it consists of several wooden boards that are located over the entire roof area. They are needed to create a base to which the trim will be attached. The pitch between the boards is selected individually. Some Decoration Materials require a completely solid base without gaps ( soft tiles etc.).

In this case, the logs should be covered with sheets of moisture-resistant OSB.
