A mirror is a must-have item home interior, almost no room can do without it. In addition to the need to see our reflection in the mirror every day, we actively use mirrors to decorate and create a certain style.

IN Lately the mirror is actively used as a decorative item; of various, sometimes bizarre, shapes or framed in an original frame, it brings an element of exclusivity to the interior and emphasizes the creative character of its owners.

You can make a unique thing out of a simple mirror with your own hands, using your imagination and bringing your own unique ideas to life.

As an example, we offer three options for decorating a mirror to convince you how amazingly simple and interesting it is to decorate a mirror, what an exciting creative process it is, and what a magnificent result it turns out.

Option one: cereal

Yes, don’t be surprised, it’s cereals - rice, millet, pearl barley, buckwheat. The main thing is that it is coarse-grained; the grains of the cereal should ultimately resemble beads.

We stick masking tape along the outer edge of the mirror, forming a frame. Next inner layer frames – Double-sided tape, and again masking tape. The result is a triple frame. We place the cereal on double-sided tape, level it with our hands, press it tightly to the tape, trying to get a frame of uniform thickness, which we cover with gold spray. We remove the masking tape and get a three-dimensional frame, as if made of identical gold beads. You can glue some beads or bugles along the outer and inner edges of the resulting frame; in color they should be combined with gold, complementing or shading it. A glamorous mirror is ready to decorate your interior.

Option two: dry twigs

You can pick up dry twigs of different sizes under the trees in your yard. Glue the mirror onto a thin sheet of plywood using “liquid nails.” The size of the plywood should be larger than the mirror; the result is a plywood frame on which to lay out and glue tree branches. Prime the branches and paint them with plain paint. You can glue dried flowers, an artificial butterfly or dragonfly between the branches. Another exclusive, made by yourself, will delight you with its simplicity and originality.

Option three: lace

Well, it's very simple. Any lace napkins, you can even use a paper napkin from under the cake. Place the napkin on the mirror, secure it and cover it with “persistent frost” aerosol. If you want to get only a pattern of thin lace, then you need to cover the outer edges of the napkin with paper, otherwise you will unwittingly cover part of the mirror around the napkin with the aerosol. In this case, the mirror will have a frosty frame with a lace pattern along the inner edge - also very beautiful.

Plot: Decorating the mirror

How to decorate mirrors with rhinestones and film

Modern man can hardly imagine his life without a mirror. Some people in their apartment have it only in the bathroom, others have it in the hallway, others need to see their reflection in every room. If you don’t want to buy a factory frame for a mirror, your soul requires something unusual, you can make it yourself. It’s not difficult: you can weave a frame out of rope, cover it with bright printed fabric, and decorate it with pasta. A mirror in a hand-made frame will add coziness and uniqueness to the room in which it will be located.

Peculiarities

When you decide to create a mirror frame yourself, it is important to imagine what it will be like. Often it is the lack of original and beautiful mirrors on sale for reasonable money that makes creative people think about making it themselves. And the abundance interesting ideas in this thought strengthens. The result of your work can look professional. A mirror in an industrial frame can become invisible in the space of a room; an unusual frame can fix this. Almost any mirror is suitable for decoration: in a wide frame like posters and photographs, in a factory unremarkable frame, or even without one at all.

There are several rules that must be followed when decorating the interior with mirrors. Only mirrors should be placed in the frame correct form : round, oval or square.

Varieties of fantasy shapes are best hung without frames.

The shape of the frame should be in harmony with the decor of the room as a whole. For example, in a room designed in a classic style, a mirror with stucco molding will look good. Modern trends in room design will be well complemented by a frame geometric shape, maybe with drawings. To expand the space, it is ideal to take several mirrors in narrow frames.

A product decorated voluminously and richly should be the only one in the room.(unless, of course, the room is furnished in an art deco style, or its area is not so large that it allows you to place several mirrors without the risk of overloading the design with details). This kind of work requires from the performer not so much professionalism and special skills in some area, but rather developed artistic taste and creativity.

The main thing for the master is to realize his idea as realistically as possible, while correctly fitting the result into the overall decor of the room.

Style and design

The style of the DIY mirror frame should match the style of the room. The design also depends on the style: for example, a mirror in a wooden frame with carvings will fit perfectly into a room decorated in a rustic style; a minimalist bathtub will be decorated with decor on the frame in the form of a mosaic.

In order not to overdo it with an abundance of details, it is better to work in one technique, using one type of material. There are no restrictions - you can work in a technique that is familiar to you. You can try yourself in something completely atypical. Decoupage, paper lace, rope weaving - using each of these techniques you can create a real masterpiece. Of course, a forged frame or mahogany model is unlikely to work if the performer has not previously worked in such a technique. However, there are many available and relatively inexpensive materials from which you can make an unusual decorative element for a mirror.

Simplicity of decor does not suit everyone. In this case, you can turn to non-standard solutions in the design of mirrors. Decoupage will help maintain the vintage style in the room; the decor with crossed slats will create an element in the Provence style. If you have the skills, you can create a baroque frame from gold-painted ceiling plinth or wooden slats. If you try, you can give it an antique look by covering it, for example, with patina.

If you stick beans onto a base made of plastic or wood, pumpkin seeds, rice or buttons of different colors and sizes, you will get a frame in the shabby chic style, which remains relevant for several years. To keep these items firmly on the frame, you need to work using a reliable adhesive base: double sided tape or painting primer.

If you have the skills to work with polymer clay, you can make frames with an openwork pattern for small mirrors. To obtain openwork, it is enough to make an impression of a special textured sheet or an ordinary napkin with a texture on the clay before it is baked.

How to do it yourself?

There are a huge number of master classes on decorating mirrors. If you take general principles, That The manufacture of any mirror frame consists of 4 stages:

  • preparation of tools and materials;
  • taking measurements;
  • assemblies;
  • decoration.

On initial stage You need to immediately decide in which room you plan to hang the mirror. If this is a kitchen or bathroom, you will have to abandon the use of some materials. Not all of them are compatible with high humidity. For example, wooden baseboard gets damp quickly metal elements are subject to corrosion. Cereals and pasta will not work either: you won’t be able to protect them from mold or mildew. In this case, it is better to use polystyrene foam, which has high moisture resistance.

Near the batteries central heating On the contrary, you need to place frames made of materials that are resistant to heat and not subject to drying out. Plastic will not work in this case. When heated, it can release harmful toxins into the air, which can affect your health over time.

If the mirror is located opposite a window, the frame must be resistant to sunlight.

Before starting work you need to calculate required amount materials, as well as purchase consumables (for example, glue, putty, sealant, varnish, brushes). It is important not to damage or stain the mirror during decorating activities. Therefore, before starting the creative process, it is better to cover the joints of the frame and mirror masking tape. This way it will remain intact and not get dirty.

If you plan to work with wood, you need to take into account that it itself requires minimal decoration: it already has a shade, texture, and pattern. To decorate the frame, just assemble it and coat the wood with varnish. When working with this material, it is important not to spoil its structure by decorating. However, some techniques, such as distressing, can look great on a wooden frame.

There is no difficulty in doing it yourself. Moreover, wood is one of the most convenient materials to work with. You can use ready-made slats and chipboards, transverse and longitudinal cuts, branches, twigs, even large shavings. If all materials are available wooden frame– a thing from the “take and do” category (no preparatory work no special post-processing is required).

If you plan to work with available materials (buttons, cereals, shells, stones), it is extremely important to glue them well and firmly to the frame. Fans of scrapbooking will be interested in making a frame using this technique (using ribbons, beads, beads, dried flowers, lace). Interesting technology is a mosaic. For this you will need to purchase tile grout. Using this technique, you can create modern frames, chic objects in the Byzantine style (it all depends on what tile you use for the job). Mosaic tiles resistant to moisture and heat, a mirror in such a frame can be placed in any corner of the house.

View

To decorate a large mirror, large, massive frames, perhaps carved or patterned, are better suited. As for the frame for a tabletop or hand mirror, it is better if it is decorative and elegant. Perhaps it will be inlaid with sparkling stones or a pattern on polymer clay, shells or buttons. You can decorate a round mirror small size using an openwork cake napkin.

When decorating a floor mirror, the frame can be made from molding - a ceiling plinth, covered with gold or silver paint, artificially aged with craquelure. If you have the skills, you can decorate it with elements of gypsum stucco. The frame for a mirror located on the floor can withstand heavy loads, so it can be decorated with more massive parts.

Metal molding and forged parts work well with a mirror surface, but this technique is suitable for those who have the appropriate forging and welding skills. As for wooden or ceiling foam moldings, their use will not cause difficulties and will not require special skills.

For a thick mirror, the frame must be appropriate so as not to introduce dissonance into the decor. If the product is thin, the decor should be airy.

Material

As for the choice of material for work, there are no restrictions except the imagination of the performer. Everything that is around can be used (from improvised means in the form of disposable plastic spoons, lace cake paper to plywood or wooden slats specially purchased for this purpose). You can use materials left over after repairs (for example, facing tiles, baseboard, drywall). You can create a frame from arithmetic rulers or old clothespins - if you wish.

For the first experience finishing work It’s better not to take expensive materials, such as wenge wood or copper. Those activities that require special equipment and knowledge, for example, making a forged frame, are best left to specialists. It is not true that a novice designer cannot make a good frame from ordinary wood. This is wrong. Branches, twigs, bark elements and sections of the trunk can serve as material for a real art object. We only need good glue and varnish for processing the finished frame.

Aluminum cutlery that has not been used for a long time can become an original frame for a kitchen mirror. Wire or gold leaf will turn an ordinary mirror into a chic decorative element. You can decorate a mirror in a factory frame made of MDF with anything, for example, with stucco molding from a ceiling plinth, using gold, black and white paint (this way you can make an object in the original and current art deco style).

In 2017, a large mirror came into fashion. An old window or even door frame They will perfectly decorate it, making it a truly unique example of shabby chic or Provence style. You can take textiles (fabric, leatherette, burlap) and cover small frames, playing with the texture or print of the material. Even sections of polyurethane pipes allow you to create an unusual and original decorative element. A mirror decorated with small mirrors in the shape of a mosaic or a flower looks interesting.

Every day, countless times we meet our reflections in the mirrors. We get used to mirrors as a given and forget that they can also be a non-trivial and noteworthy element of decor.

How to decorate a mirror with your own hands

It is not necessary to look for a designer to decorate a mirror: many ideas are easy to implement on your own. All you need is imagination, available materials, accuracy and a lot, a lot of glue.

To begin with, you can try to decorate the mirror surface itself. The best assistant Acrylic paints will help in this matter: they fit perfectly on the surface, dry quickly, and are also quite environmentally friendly. They do not fade over time, maintaining the brightness of the color for a long time.

Acrylic paints will stick well even on a bathroom mirror, despite high humidity in the room. In addition to the main color range, they also produce paints with glitter, which can be applied on top of regular ones, giving the patterns a festive mood.

In addition to acrylic, stained glass paints are suitable. When they dry, they become transparent and create the effect of colored glass, which is especially pleasing to the eye in a well-lit room.

Before drawing, you need to outline the contours of future images thin lines so that the paint does not spread beyond their limits.

If you are not confident in your artistic abilities, it is better not to paint the surface yourself, but to purchase decorative stickers. When applying them to the surface, carefully smooth the image so that it does not bubble.

You should not place images in the center of the mirror if you still plan to use it for its intended purpose. It is better to place them near the edge: this way you will revive the familiar look and avoid excesses.

Before starting any work, do not forget to thoroughly rinse the mirror surface detergent and degrease it with alcohol. Dust constantly settles on the surface, and because of it, drawings and stickers may not be applied well.

If the mirror has an inconspicuous frame, you can decorate it by focusing on the frame. All sorts of little things are suitable for this: buttons, sparkles, beads, small shells, rhinestones, plant seeds.

Seashells are perfect for decorating a bathroom mirror. It is no coincidence that designers prefer a marine theme when creating decorative items for the bathroom: everything here is reminiscent of the sound of waves and a sandy beach. After application, shells can be painted with the same acrylic paint so that the new frame matches the color scheme of the interior.

If you choose beads for decoration, it is better to take several different types. For example, glass beads that resemble an oblong faceted tube will go well with small cuttings.

Plant seeds, twigs, dried flowers and leaves will help organize a small island of nature in the middle of a noisy city, which is what eco-style strives for.

Stale scraps of fabric can also be useful for decoration: they can be used to cover the mirror frame. Even napkins and magazine clippings will be useful if you use them using the decoupage technique.

Another nice option frame design - mosaic. Of course, you can try to look for colored glass left over from broken things at home, but in hobby and art stores there are pieces of glass already cut into neat plates specifically for creating mosaic images. They are safe to use, which cannot be said about untreated fragments.

Even if the mirror does not have a frame, you can make the frame yourself - for example, using a piece of plywood. Cut a circle, rectangle or square out of it, depending on the chosen shape.

Place a mirror on it to make sure the frame is wide enough. The mirror can be glued to the surface using silicone sealant, which has good water resistance and heat resistance.

The resulting frame can be decorated various materials using a glue gun.

It’s easy to diversify your interior with your own hands. An ordinary mirror can be turned into a work of art thanks to a frame of your own making. For decoration, you can use both expensive and valuable materials and improvised means. The right mirror frame design will make any room more stylish.

  1. What can you make a frame from?
  2. Manufacturing process
  3. Taking measurements
  4. Oval mirror edging (without wood)
  5. Frame made of branches
  6. Advice for a novice master

A mirror frame is not only part of the design of the mirror cloth, but also a decorative element in the composition of the room. The frame can become the accent of the room, harmonize with the surrounding space or stand out from it with its originality. The frame can be any. Its shape, size and appearance depend on the dimensions of the mirror and the imagination of the master. Here are a few master classes that will help you realize your idea and create your own unique frame.

What can you make a frame from?

Creating a mirror frame is a creative process. It can be made from anything:

  • Wood is the most common material. Slats, old and new boards, and trunk cuts are used. The variety of solutions is limited only by the author's imagination.
  • Polyurethane foam ceiling skirting boards are another option for creating a classic frame that is well suited for decoration.
  • Metal baguettes and forging are organically combined with a mirror surface. These materials are used by craftsmen who know how to work with metal blanks, forging and welding.

The main thing in production is an idea that should be well thought out and implemented, then the mirror composition will bring aesthetic pleasure and complement the interior.

Decor is an equally important stage in the design of the frame and baguette. If the frame is made from ceiling plinth, it should be supplemented with decorative elements or covered with paint or enamel, since the plinth itself is often white and featureless. The same goes for plastic slats. With wood it’s different: the material already has a structure, a beautiful pattern, shade. It is enough to cover wooden baguettes with protective paint or varnish, but you can always add accessories to the frame.

Requirements for mirror framing for different rooms

When choosing materials for creating a frame and its decor, it is important to take into account the specifics of the room in which the mirror will be installed:

  • For the bathroom, it is imperative to use materials that are resistant to corrosion. This can be antiseptic-treated wood or galvanized metal; polyurethane is suitable.
  • Near heating radiators, in the kitchen, in the room opposite the window, hang a baguette made of heat-resistant materials that are not subject to linear expansion (it is not recommended to use plastic).
  • The frame opposite the window must be UV resistant; special compounds are used to coat the frames.
  • Easy to care for - important requirement to the frame and its decor.

Except practical qualities, the frame must be combined with the surrounding space, in harmony with the interior and match the style of its design.

Manufacturing process

Most comfortable material for making mirror frames - wood. Natural raw materials are suitable for almost any interior style: from classic to modern. Can be used for making different shapes wood:

  • longitudinal cuts of trunks;
  • transverse cuts (circles);
  • ready-made slats;
  • wood materials (chipboard, OSB);
  • thick and thin branches.

The tree does not need additional decoration, but if necessary, you can do anything with it: paint, tint, glue appliqués, etc.

Taking measurements

The first thing you need to do before starting work is to correctly take measurements of the mirror cloth. To do this, the length and width of a quadrangular product are measured, and the diameter of a round one.

When creating a rectangular baguette frame, it is necessary to take into account that the mirror will partially extend beyond the frame (1-2 cm) on the front side. When preparing slats, you should take measurements along the inner shelf, if there is one.. When gluing the mirror onto the base canvas, this allowance can be neglected and the actual dimensions can be transferred.

Master class: composition from slats

The easiest way to design a rectangular or square mirror is to make a frame from ready-made wooden or ceiling polyurethane slats. They can be bought at any construction supermarket or framing shop. The width of the blanks is determined by the aesthetic preferences of the artist:

  1. It is necessary to cut blanks from the slats to the size of the canvas. It is important to take into account the size of the inner shelf so that the mirror does not move in a large frame.
  2. Then you need to cut the slats at an angle of 45˚, clean the cuts sandpaper.
  3. Now on the table we fold the frame corner to corner, and attach it to the outer ones. metal corners.
  4. We take one piece at a time and coat the ends with wood glue.
  5. When all the blanks are coated, we again attach the metal corners and tighten the structure with a rope to fix the position of all components. It is important to stretch the rope as much as possible so that the glue sets.
  6. After some time (see instructions for the glue), remove the tension. The frame is ready. It is necessary to strengthen its corners - we put staples with a stapler.

The video shows the process of assembling a frame from ready-made profiled slats.

Then you can decorate the front side: paint it, paint the resulting frame, make an applique.

  1. To fix the mirror in the frame, cut out 4 corners from plywood.
  2. We insert the mirror into the frame and attach the corners to the base. This is done with glue or a stapler. It is better to combine these methods.
  3. We attach a hanging loop to the frame.

Instead of a profiled rail, use a regular one. Then the profile can be made using carpentry tools, if available. If skill allows, adhesive joints are replaced with grooved ones. To do this, it is necessary to make a tongue and groove in the corner planes, which are subsequently coated with glue and firmly connected to each other.

Another option is to connect the slats at an angle of 90 0 rather than 45 0.

We use a vertical cut of the trunk

Sometimes nature itself creates masterpieces that you just need to see. For example, an old snag or rickety tree can have an interesting shape and become the basis for an artistic frame for a mirror:

  1. We take a barrel of any diameter (depending on preference).
  2. We make a longitudinal cut, set the thickness of the workpiece.
  3. We treat the board with sandpaper and impregnate it with antiseptics.
  4. We connect the planks at a given angle.
  5. To secure the mirror, we attach plywood corners to the back of the frame.
  6. We install a loop for hanging the structure.

Framing round and oval mirrors

To decorate an oval or round mirror, you will need a plywood backing for an oversized canvas. Making the basis for decoration:

  1. A mirror sheet is attached to the base with glue.
  2. A loop is mounted on the reverse side for hanging the structure.

Oval mirror edging (without wood)

Mirror oval or round shape It’s not easy to frame, but it’s easy to decorate with edging. For example, cable car:

  1. For glass you will need a base of a similar shape, only larger in size.
  2. A rope or rope is taken with a length equal to the circumference of the fabric being designed.
  3. We attach the mirror to the base with thermal glue.
  4. We lay the edging around in one or several rows, lubricating it with hot glue along the entire length.
  5. We hide the edge of the rope under decorative elements. You can make a regular transverse ligation with the same rope.

The made base goes well with beads and nautical-themed accessories.

Frame made of branches

Branches can be found everywhere: in a park, forest, square on the way home or to work. Why not use them to decorate a mirror frame?

  1. The collected branches must be thoroughly cleaned of microflora: remove the damp and damaged bark, treat with boiling water or an antiseptic, which makes the shade of the wood more saturated.
  2. It is necessary to prepare a cardboard base for glass.
  3. We press the treated branches tightly against each other to the base, having previously soaked them with hot glue.
  4. If necessary, color the composition. This is convenient to do with aerosol paints.

Most master classes are based on the use of a mirror base, to which all elements are attached - mirror cloth, decor, hanging loops. Otherwise, there are no difficulties - just imagination, and the result will certainly please you and your loved ones!
