Do I need to water the lawn? Lawn care calendar: watering, mowing, fertilizing

A well-groomed lawn, playing with shades of greenery, is a decoration for any area. It’s nice to run through it barefoot, lie down and take a break from dacha worries, play with children or a dog. To keep it constantly pleasing to the eye, you need proper care, and how often you water the lawn depends on its condition and the mood of those around you.

How to tell if your lawn needs watering

All living things need moisture, and the grass on your front lawn is no exception. But, like cucumbers or potatoes, overwatering is contraindicated. To prevent putrefactive processes from developing, water the lawn at certain times, taking into account the frequency of natural precipitation and the proximity of the location. groundwater.

Regularly moistening the lawn not only provides the grass with moisture, but also maintains the temperature balance of the soil. The first watering, very abundant, is carried out immediately after sowing the grass, using the sprinkling method.

Next, before germination, you need to take into account the actual weather conditions and the moisture requirements of the sown grass seeds. If there is no such information regarding the seeds, proceed as follows: on sunny days, water daily, and in cloudy weather, monitor the moisture content of the top layer of soil.

With the emergence of seedlings, it becomes easier to determine the need for watering: the grass in need of moisture begins to fade and loses its elasticity. If you walk on such a lawn, footprints remain for about half an hour. The need for watering is also assessed using a long, 15 cm or more, screwdriver or thin stick. If the tool easily enters the soil, the time for watering has not yet come.

Advice: “For owners who rarely visit their summer cottage, it is advisable to sow drought-resistant lawn grass: ryegrass, tall and filamentous fescue, bentgrass.”

What time of day is best to water?

It is undesirable to water on a hot sunny day: drops of water will produce the effect of numerous lenses, that is, they will attract the rays of the sun and focus them on the surface of the blades of grass, leading to burns.

In many regions, evening watering is also undesirable: upper layer the soil does not have time to dry out, and the nighttime drop in temperature creates favorable conditions for the development of fungal diseases and rot. In hot weather, the optimal time is from 6 to 9 am: moisture has time to be absorbed and the grass blades have time to dry before the peak solar intensity.

How often to water

The frequency of watering the lawn depends on several factors, none of which are minor:

  1. Landscape type. A lawn located on a slope needs to be watered more often than one on level ground or in a low area.
  2. The soil. Loams are characterized by excellent ability to retain moisture. One square meter can “hide” about 60 liters of water, clay holds 30–35 liters, sandstone holds no more than 20 liters.
  3. Weather. It's no secret that she can change overnight.
  4. The type of lawn grass is moisture-loving or drought-resistant.
  5. Season. In summer you need more water than in spring or autumn.

In general, the watering regime for lawns from 2 years and older is presented as follows:

  • from early April to mid-May, water once a week;
  • from mid-May to mid-September - 2 times a week;
  • from mid-September to the end of October - once a week.
In the south, the watering regime in May and September corresponds to summer.

During drought, watering is daily, and in cool, cloudy weather without precipitation or at temperatures below 15°C - 1–2 times a week. Watering is also required outside of the schedule in stressful situations: after each haircut and fertilizing.

It is impossible to water the lawn for future use. Such a measure is more likely to do harm than good: excess moisture not only creates a favorable environment for pathogenic fungi, but also deprives the roots of the stimulus to grow and impedes the supply of oxygen to them.

How much water do you need

The amount of water poured at one time also depends on several factors: the depth of groundwater, the moisture capacity of the soil, and weather conditions. The optimal watering rate is 10–30 l/m2 at a time.

The total water consumption is obtained by multiplying this number by the area of the lawn. When watering, make sure that the water is completely absorbed into the soil and does not leave puddles. 15–20 minutes after its completion, check how deeply the moisture has been absorbed. Wetting the soil by 10 cm indicates a sufficient amount of water.

Watering methods

There are three main methods: sprinkling, drip irrigation, subsurface irrigation.

Sprinkling

Sprinkling is watering that simulates rain. The process can be manual or automatic (automated).

Manual watering is done from a hose ending in a sprayer, or less often from a watering can. The method is suitable for small lawns. Automatic or semi-automatic sprinkling is a complex consisting of a water supply system under pressure (pipeline, well, storage tank with a pump), hoses of suitable length, and sprinklers.

Sprinklers are divided into two groups: stationary and mobile. Everything is clear here, either they stand in certain places, ensuring sufficient moisture in all corners of the lawn, or they are moved around the lawn to cover the entire area. Sprinklers also vary in design; they either direct the flow of water in one direction, rotate or swing.

Sprinklers with pulsating spraying, equipped with rotating nozzles, are considered economical. Moisture is supplied in small portions, and during short breaks the sprinkler rotates to a specified angle. The water does not spread over the surface of the lawn, but manages to be absorbed into the soil.

Stationary sprinklers create certain inconveniences when mowing the lawn. There is no such problem with the retractable version: when turned off, it is hidden in the lower layer of the lawn. When turned on, it rises. However, this method is quite expensive, since you have to lay water pipes and install special nozzles. Equally important is constant good pressure in the water supply system.

Drip irrigation

A method that has long earned the recognition of summer residents, if only because watering can be carried out during the daytime: moisture is supplied directly to the roots of the grass. And saving water plays a special role in areas where its consumption is strictly regulated or payment (considerable!) is made according to the readings of flow meters. Drip irrigation can occur without human intervention, that is, it can be completely automatic. To do this, just set a timer that turns on the water supply at a certain time.

The only drawback is the rather labor-intensive process of pulling and coiling the hoses before and after each haircut.

Subsoil irrigation

The most expensive way to water a lawn, but it has a long list of advantages: the soil is saturated with oxygen; the near-Earth air layer does not experience waterlogging; the risks of fungal diseases are minimized. Irrigation of the soil occurs through perforations in pipes, usually plastic, placed directly in the soil under the lawn. The method is ideal for maintaining the water regime of lawns located on slopes.

What not to do when watering your lawn

The attractiveness and health of your lawn largely depend on proper watering. Despite the apparent simplicity of the procedure, problems often arise, especially among novice summer residents. They are associated with gross violations of watering rules.

Short and frequent watering or watering several times a day. It leads to the near-surface development of the root system of lawn grass. Under such conditions, even drought-resistant species lose this quality, and their immunity is weakened.

Overflow, formation of puddles. Excess moisture either seeps into deeper layers, not bringing much benefit to the lawn, or stagnates on the surface, causing acidification of the soil or rotting of the grass. When laying out lawns in areas with uneven surfaces, a drainage system and gutters are provided to prevent stagnation of water after watering.

Unacceptable means of irrigation. A hose or watering can without a spray nozzle causes mechanical damage to the lawn, eroding the soil and washing out the grass from it.

Temperature shock. Irrigation is not allowed cold water, i.e. with a temperature below 10°C. This is the “sin” of underground watering the lawn and moistening with a hose if the water intake comes directly from a well or water supply. The optimal water temperature is 15–25°C; with the drip method, the water has time to warm up before it hits the grass roots. In this regard, it is impossible to make a claim against the watering can if you fill it from the “standby” container.

Watering at the wrong time. A wet lawn has two enemies: the scorching sun and cold nights.

Rolled lawns, which are gaining popularity, require compliance with all the above watering rules, both after planting (spreading) and throughout the subsequent period. It is important not to forget that they contain bluegrass, which is not particularly drought-resistant.

A well-groomed lawn not only decorates the area or serves as a fitness area, which, by the way, is healthier than the usual rug. It performs another important function: it cleanses and improves the health of the air. A properly watered lawn is good for the health of all the inhabitants of the dacha.

Watering is one of the most important aspects of lawn care. Proper and timely irrigation will ensure beautiful view, stimulates plant growth and creates a favorable climate. With a lack of moisture, the growth process slows down, lawn grass turns yellow and begins to wither. It is necessary to water the lawn in spring, summer and autumn.

How do you know if your lawn needs watering?

If there is a lack of moisture, the grass itself will demonstrate this to you. It is better to get ahead of drying out by the first signs:

  • The grass began to curl;
  • The lawn began to be trampled, the grass takes a long time to rise after being pressed down;
  • When there is drought, the grass turns brown;
  • The grass withers or turns yellow;
  • Bald spots appear.

Wilting is most noticeable on older grass. The first to suffer from drought are common bluegrass and white bentgrass. Average soil moisture requirements for meadow grass and chaff. Fescue trees are the least demanding.

When there is a lack of water, drought-resistant grasses remain alive. If their leaves and root system dry out, the plants go into dormancy mode. When the soil is moistened, it begins to grow again. Despite the fact that the grasses survived, their appearance during drought leaves much to be desired. A yellowed lawn is unlikely to be pleasing to the eye.

When is the best time to water the lawn?

The most common question is: when to water - in the morning or in the evening? Each case has its own characteristics and subtleties.

Watering is best done in the early morning. In cool, windless weather, water evaporates less and the grass has time to dry before the heat sets in.

Daytime watering is also acceptable, but it is worth considering that in the scorching sun, wet grass can get burned: drops of water create a lens effect. Wetting the grass in the heat is called harmful watering; spots appear on the blades of grass. Therefore, cloudy days or autumn, when the sun is less hot, are better suited for daytime watering.

Evening watering in the summer is recommended to be done between 16.00 and 18.00. This is due to the fact that the grass needs to dry out. If the grass cover stays wet all night, this can negatively affect its condition and lead to fungal diseases.

How often should you water your lawn?

To accurately answer the question of how often you need to water your lawn, you need to consider the following factors: soil type, weather and root depth. The weather is the most important factor. In the driest hot summer weather, it is recommended to water every day. On average for Russia, in the heat and on sandy soils The lawn needs to be watered 2-3 times a week. In autumn and in cool weather, the rate of grass moistening is reduced to 1 time per 10 days. The main point that needs to be taken into account when watering is that the soil must have time to dry out between waterings. This will stimulate the growth of the root system: the roots begin to grow deeper, extracting the remaining moisture. In October, a week before frost, you should stop watering completely.

One of the most complex issues— how much water is required to water the lawn. For the middle zone there is a watering rate that ranges from 20 to 40 liters per 1 sq.m of lawn. Watering should be moderate. The formation of puddles and accumulation of water is unacceptable. The frequency of watering is determined by the composition of the soil and weather conditions. For light sandy loam soils, the frequency of irrigation is once every 3-4 days. For clay soils, once every 7-10 days. Additional moisture is provided after cutting, during the period of active growth and when feeding with fertilizers. Excessive watering of the lawn leads to overgrowth of moss and the development of fungal diseases.

If the lawn has been made recently and the grass has not yet sprouted, then the soil must be kept moist at all times. In this case, watering is required daily. Soil without vegetation and turf does not retain moisture, the dark surface of the earth heats up, and water quickly evaporates. On average, daily watering should be carried out for about 7-10 days. Further, the frequency of soil moisture is determined by the composition of the soil and the average daily temperature.

Types of irrigation

For young grass, or immediately after planting, you need a little water: the root system has not yet formed a layer of turf that absorbs and retains moisture. Therefore, you can water not a lot, but often.

Deep, abundant watering should be done during drought, in the summer.

Incorrect or harmful watering - usually this is oversaturation of the soil with moisture or wetting on a hot day. In both cases, the grass turns yellow and withers. Watering during drought is best done in the early morning.

Lawn watering products

Everyone chooses the means and methods of watering a green lawn themselves. Depending on the area of the lawn, the complexity of the terrain and its shape, the following irrigation options can be considered:

A garden watering can is the easiest way to water your lawn with your own hands. Ideal for watering a small lawn near the house. You can’t do without a watering can to moisten problem areas, in places where the hose stream doesn’t reach or to avoid getting it wet again. garden paths.

Garden hoses - simple and universal method glaze. In combination with sprinkler attachments, it perfectly irrigates the soil, does not wash away the soil and does not damage the root system. You can water the plants without using special nozzles, slightly blocking the stream with your finger. Due to the fact that watering is carried out with your own hands, the soil will be thoroughly moistened over the entire area. The downside is that you have to waste your time moving the hose with the nozzle across the lawn.

Perforated hoses differ from ordinary hoses only in that there are a lot of holes throughout their entire surface. The hose is deployed across the lawn, and quite large areas are watered through the holes.

The sprinkler is convenient device, turning a powerful stream from a hose into rain. The use of such a nozzle does not allow water to destroy the soil surface during irrigation. The disadvantage of the device is the large proportion of water evaporation during irrigation. Small particles of water are blown away by the wind.

The circular sprinkler looks like a fountain when in operation. They are usually installed in several pieces and are perfect for watering small lawns.

Rotating sprinkler - this device is a sprinkler with the ability to regulate the stream. This system Watering allows you to adjust the watering distance so as not to flood garden paths or swings.

A rocking or oscillating sprinkler is designed specifically for watering rectangular and square lawns. The device allows you to adjust the range and degree of watering.

Automatic watering systems are used on large lawns when watering by hand takes a lot of time. The most important aspect is that irrigation systems are installed before the lawn is installed. There are two types of sprinklers used in these systems: stationary (or visible) and recessed. Recessed sprinklers appear on the surface of the lawn only during watering.

An automatic irrigation system consists of an underground system of pipes and hoses, sprinklers, a large-capacity water container, pumps, tensiometers, rain sensors and a computer. Tensiometers transmit information about soil moisture to a computer. Rain sensors report that there is no need for watering at the programmed time, if there is precipitation. Such systems are calculated and installed by specialists.

Proper watering plays the main role in the formation of a lawn, so every home owner must know how often to water the lawn after planting. If you want to have an ideal lawn where children can play and walk barefoot, you should be especially careful about the regular flow of water into the area.

Perfect, low-cut, weed-free grass is the result of our meticulous lawn care. This opinion is shared by professional gardeners.

As numerous studies have shown, quite a lot of moisture evaporates from even grass cover. As a rule, this value reaches 25 liters per 1 m². And if the owner wants to see the lawn in good condition, it should be watered regularly, especially on dry summer and spring days.

Immediately after planting, the lawn requires abundant watering. After this, you need to water the lawn frequently. On hot summer days, you should provide the soil with a portion of moisture every day, and if we are talking about a cooler and wetter period of the year, then you should monitor the condition of your lawn, which will clearly demonstrate the lack of water.

If you are in doubt whether you need to water your lawn or whether it is better not to do it, you need to take moisture readings at a depth of 10 cm.

In addition, the need for watering can demonstrate the appearance of the grass. If it lacks moisture, it acquires a grayish tint, fades and becomes completely dull. At the same time, many weeds take root well in dry soil, so if you notice the appearance of foreign crops on the site, you should water the lawn generously.

In order to increase the lawn's resistance to drought, a number of measures should be taken to deepen the root system. To do this, during the dry period it is necessary to break through the upper, coarsened ball of soil, which does not allow most moisture and other minerals. After piercing, mulching should be carried out throughout the entire area.

Watering after planting a lawn depends primarily on climatic conditions and the type of soil available. For example, sandy soils need more frequent watering than chernozems and loams, since sands transmit moisture much faster than other rocks. Of course, watering in hot weather should be done several times more often than in other weather conditions.

The main rule that every gardener should remember is that you need to water the lawn only when the soil is dry, otherwise the area will be too saturated with moisture and turn into one continuous swamp.

Main types of irrigation

Indeed, any owner of a property needs to know how to water a lawn and what available means this can be done.

At first glance it may seem that for good watering All it takes is water and a hose, but that's not the case at all. Lawn watering is carried out according to its intended purpose and therefore is divided into several types.

The first type of irrigation is planting. It is carried out only when planting plants. The main goal is to create favorable conditions for normal plant growth. In this case, the water consumption is about 3 m³ per approximately one hundred square meters of land.

The second type of irrigation is called vegetative. It is carried out to increase moisture reserves under a thick layer of turf. The frequency of such watering primarily depends on the weather. It is almost impossible to determine water consumption, since various varieties plants require different quantities moisture. The average consumption is one cubic meter per hundred square meters of land.

There is also a fertilizing type of irrigation, which is necessary if fertilizers are applied to the soil. Water consumption is approximately the same as in the previous case. Refreshment watering is usually carried out when there is enough moisture in the soil, but due to unfavorable weather conditions, plants need moisture on the stems and leaves. Water consumption in this case is small and amounts to no more than 1 m³ per hundred square meters.

Moisture-recharging irrigation is carried out in spring or autumn. They are necessary to provide moisture throughout the winter both in the upper and lower layers of the soil. The consumption for such irrigation is about 10 cubic meters of water per hundred square meters. In the case of high groundwater levels, this flow rate can be reduced by half.

The last type of irrigation is anti-frost. This watering is carried out a day before frost. Water consumption averages 2 cubic meters per hundred square meters.

Every property owner should know how often to water their flowerbeds and lawns so that their appearance can truly please the eyes of others. Although watering is not a very complicated process, you should still know the basic rules, and if you follow them, you can grow a wonderful lawn.

If the soil, watering and climatic conditions do not suit the plant, it will not grow on your lawn, no matter how much you want it.

At the same time you should select external signs plants included in the lawn mixture, in such a way as to obtain a fairly uniform, even and beautiful coating. Sowing the lawn.

Drainage construction

The most common lawn grass in Russia is creeping bentgrass. This is a grass with long shoots up to half a meter that spread along the ground. The plant grows quickly with timely watering and recovers when played on the lawn, making it a favorite grass for children's playgrounds. For quick creation lawns use rooted shoots, which in two months will create a carpet of greenery on which children can play. Shoots of this lawn grass are planted in the spring at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The lawn needs frequent watering.

Sowing itself includes several sequential operations.

How to grow a weed-free lawn? If the grass covers the area in a dense layer, then the weeds simply will not break through. You can also use herbicides:

  4. Before you buy seeds, find out when they were grown (the bag should be stamped with the date). For sowing, you need to buy 6 kg of seeds per hundred square meters: 5 kg for sowing and 1 kg for repairing the lawn for the next year. There should be no more than two years between the time of growing seeds and their sowing! Do not open the package out of curiosity before sowing, because... seed germination depends on humidity, and this, in turn, depends on the tightness of the packaging.

Sowing seeds, how to do it correctly

  • At the end of the lawn installation, seeds and fertilizers must be carefully incorporated into the soil. If the soil is light, you can simply roll it lightly to improve contact between the seeds and the soil. IN ideal the seeds should be deepened into the ground at a distance of about 2 mm.

. I especially want to focus on two plants - clover and daisy. Clover and garden lawn are incompatible things. You will not be able to arrange a cheerful patch of pink clover on the playground and a garden lawn in front of the house in one area, because... clover is “gathering dust” and will soon appear as an uninvited guest in your front yard. If a joyful white and pink daisy appears on the lawn, immediately grab a shovel and dig it up by the roots, otherwise this “joy” will quickly spread all over the lawn. I don’t like all kinds of herbicides and don’t use them.

Plot

The lawn soil requires constant watering, especially for the first shoots to appear. Watering is carried out every day for approximately 10 minutes. To make it uniform, special nozzles are used. From the moment the seeds are planted until the first shoots appear, one to three weeks pass. Usually seeds High Quality take longer to germinate.

In the first year, do not put too much stress on the lawn; try to walk on it as little as possible. Try to protect him from pets, especially dogs.

Lawns were known more than 3 thousand years ago. We find the first mentions of grass sowing in the Bible - both in the old and in the new Testament. In Persia, so-called grass carpets were created in gardens even before new era. Hundreds of years before the new era, one of the first lawns was created in the Chinese Imperial Park of Chew.

Rules for lawn care

The last stage of planting is abundant watering. Before the grass emerges, the area must be watered as the soil dries out.

The first two years, meadow bluegrass requires careful care, then it begins to actively grow, crowding out weeds.

is not difficult, but requires precision and accuracy. To begin, prepare your aids. You will need two boards, or wide (hunting) skis - this way you will avoid marks on the ground. To achieve even distribution of seeds, use a special seeder if possible. You will also need a manual roller, which presses the seeds into the soil, and equipment for watering.

  • If we talk about how to grow a lawn that will serve for many years, then you cannot do without building a drainage system.

Planting a lawn requires preliminary preparation, consisting of several works. The first step is to prepare the site for sowing in advance - this needs to be done in the fall. The allocated plot of land should be dug up without breaking the breasts and left for the winter so that the soil is more crumbly and saturated with moisture (see the article “Autumn Digging of the Soil”). If it was not possible to prepare the soil in advance, then after digging you need to wait a few days for the soil to settle, helping it reach the desired consistency with daily watering.

we have leveled the soil, prepared it, now it needs to be compacted - either with the back of a rake (if the area is small) or with a roller weighing 100 kg. Then water and leave for 3-4 weeks. All this time, periodically watering the ground, correcting the unevenness (pour a mixture of earth and sand into the holes), weeds appearing in the field and selecting the time for planting the lawn.

Lawn mowing

  • To contents
  • It is not worth planting the lawn in parts or sectors. After the seeds germinate, a gap is formed at the junction of the sectors, which will not be filled for a very long time. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare and plant the entire site at once.
  • Meadow bluegrass is a capricious grass that requires careful lawn care in the first two years: weeding and watering are necessary. But then it itself begins to actively grow and crowd out all the weeds. Prefers light sandy loam and loose loam. It is best to sow this grass in August on a prepared lawn, thoroughly cleared of roots.

To determine seed consumption, a number of conditions should be taken into account. Firstly, this is the season: when autumn planting seeds are taken half as much as in spring. This allows for the formation of larger and stronger plants that are better prepared for winter cold. Secondly, approximately half a kilo of seeds per hundred square meters will be required in the future for overseeding; this stock must be taken care of immediately. Grass seeds remain viable for a long time, and to get a truly beautiful lawn, you will need more than one year. Sowing rates, therefore, can vary significantly: from 25 to 50 g of seeds per square meter of future lawn area.

You need to mow the grass as often as possible and only with well-sharpened blades. Frequent mowing will make the grass thicker, which will prevent weeds from germinating.

After the site has been selected, it is necessary to start constructing drainage. This step is especially important if the site is located in low places with high humidity. Of course, a drainage pad is not a necessary component, but it will not be superfluous.

The second stage of preparation is loosening the soil layer while simultaneously introducing nutrition designed for the next 3 years of the lawn’s life. The site is plowed to a depth of no more than 40 cm and the loosened soil is fertilized with vegetable compost mixed with azofoska or superphosphate in a total layer of 15 cm. The compost composition is made from long-decomposing organic matter, mixing animal waste with straw, branches, bark, wood chips and newsprint. feeding The day for planting should be calm, without rain, and the soil should be moist inside and windy at the top so that it does not stick to the feet and the roller. It is best to prepare the area for the lawn in the fall and sow it in the spring. It is not advisable to plant a lawn later on August 20-25, since in the fall the grass grows 3-4 times slower. Mowing also helps plants to bush on the soil surface, forming additional shoots, creating dense turf, growing with rhizomes.

First of all, carefully remove debris from the site (stones, bricks, slabs, boards and chips, foil, plastic bottles, bags, film). Never bury waste in the ground. This will create unfavorable conditions for the growth and development of herbs. Plants in areas of such burial grounds will be stunted, overwinter poorly, and get sick.

What to sow

As practice shows, compacting seeds and soil, as described above, does not give good enough results. Because some of the seeds manage to be eaten by birds, while some simply do not germinate. To avoid this, you should sprinkle the seeds with soil. Meadow fescue is a grass that has rough leaves and a short stem. Doesn't twitch very well, forms tufts of greenery. With 100% use of this grass, the lawn ends up with bald spots. Loves rich loams. Before planting, you can additionally add mineral fertilizers with a high nitrogen content to the soil. For one hundred square meters you will need up to one and a half kilograms of fertilizer. It is also good to prepare peat or humus in advance for use as a mulching material; its quantity is determined so that the lawn area is covered with a layer of mulch about 0.5 cm thick.

How short should you cut your lawn? This will depend on the type of grass the clearing is planted with. The basic rule is to cut off no more than 1/3 of the total height. If the grass is overgrown, then it is necessary to mow and bring its height to the desired level in two or three steps. Never mow a wet lawn.

Drainage construction looks like this:

The next stage is leveling the area with a rake, removing weeds, debris and stones. If these works are performed poorly, lawn care will be difficult, the likely occurrence of “bald patches” and visible differences in the height of the green mass.

How to sow a lawn correctly

must be applied systematically due to their rapid consumption by the root system of herbs. From spring and in the first half of summer - 1 time every 2-3 weeks Kemira of Finnish production. From the second half of summer, feed twice with chlorine-free phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. Last feeding on August 10-15 with Kemira. You can only feed when the ground is wet! lunar calendar So, after the lawn grass has sprouted, it needs care. It consists of watering, mowing and fertilizing. If you follow the rules of lawn care, it will be magnificent and will become business card owner of a country plot.

We must also take into account that every mowing is a great stress for the plants. It is easier for them to recover if no more than 1/3 of the stem is cut at a time, no matter how tall it is.

The soil for the lawn should be sufficiently moisture-absorbing so that the plants do not experience a lack of moisture. At the same time, water should not accumulate on it, as this leads to loss of plants.

A proven planting method that gives excellent results, but more labor intensive is the following:

Red fescue forms dense turf only in the second year, but does not require watering and tolerates drought and shading well. Loves fertile, light soils.

If you sow by hand, divide the seeds into two equal parts and sow in two steps, in two mutually perpendicular directions. Sow the grass a little thicker along the edges of the area and along the paths. The seeds should first be mixed with sand or soil; For one part of seeds take 1 - 3 parts of sand.

After mowing there is no need to remove the cut grass. These particles are easily absorbed by the soil, which will only benefit the lawn.

The top layer of soil is removed from the cleared site to a depth of 40...45 cm.

After preparation is completed, you can begin sowing the lawn. They choose a lawn in accordance with the weather conditions of their region, as well as the purpose of the future lawn - for games, relaxation, a lawn, a simple carpet for greenery, a flower meadow or in the English style.

sazhaemsad.ru

Water. Firstly, after each haircut, and secondly, as needed depending on the weather. You must remember that the soil must be moist so that the roots do not dry out.

First condition: preparatory work

gardener. What should you have for this day? Seeds, seeder, rakes, buckets, roller, lutrasil, staples, shovels, wheelbarrows, sifted garden soil. Consider in advance which direction you will sow. Mix the seeds thoroughly in the bag and do this periodically, pour into the seeder (the seeder must be adjusted in advance) and sow a strip slightly wider than the width of the roller. In a small area, the lawn can be sowed by hand using a sowing motion. Lightly cover this strip with prepared soil with a layer of approximately 1.5-1 cm and roll it with a roller. About a meter of lawn along the paths and blind areas should be sown 2 times thicker: these places, firstly, are trampled the most, and winter time snow is dumped here. Cover the sown area with lutrasil and pin it with pins 15-20 cm long. Apply Lutrasil overlapping and secure with pins after 1-1.5 m. Less often, it’s bad - the wind will lift the shelter. Why is it needed? Firstly, so that birds do not peck the seeds, secondly, so that heavy rain does not dislodge or wash them away (after all, it is very important that they are evenly distributed over the surface!), thirdly, so that pets cannot harm the future lawn . After everything is closed, pour water on top through sprayers. You cannot water your lawn with chlorinated water!

The first rule is to prepare the site. Applying the right fertilizers and by digging the area to the appropriate depth - approximately 20 cm, you can achieve soil fertility.

The first mowing is usually carried out at a time when the soil and grass are dry and the latter have reached a height of 10 cm. For the first time, the very ends of the grass are cut off, no more than 1 cm. The lawn mower blades must be sharp. During subsequent haircuts, the knives are gradually lowered lower and lower.

Drainage

After the ground on the site has been prepared, approximately 1 cm of soil should be removed and poured onto the area where grass is not planted.

The second condition: watering, at which your lawn will be thick and beautiful.

Perennial ryegrass is a temporary lawn for one year. This is a moisture-loving plant that freezes during cold winters. Requires shelter for the winter. It does not even tolerate spring frosts. They open it after the threat of frost has completely passed. The best soil for planting it - well-drained loams. The plant sprouts quickly and after two weeks completely covers the lawn with young shoots. Requires regular feeding with complex fertilizers and watering. In the second year, reseeding of grass is necessary. Seed consumption - 14-15 g per 1 square. m.

The weather for planting must be calm. Having distributed the seeds over the surface of the soil, they are embedded shallowly using a rake, and then the entire area is evenly rolled with a roller, increasing the area of contact between the seeds and the ground. This procedure allows you to accelerate the emergence of seedlings by 2 - 4 days and stimulates the growth of grasses.

Third condition: land without weeds

The main mistake is watering too often. This causes the grass to grow too actively, since the root system remains almost at the surface of the soil. That is why artificially created clearings are watered rarely, but always abundantly.

A layer of broken brick, crushed stone or gravel is laid on the bottom.

1 year.

Fourth condition: planting high-quality and correctly selected seeds for the area

We water the lawn depending on the weather and the soil: if it’s hot, then every day; if the soil is sandy - 2 times a day. It is necessary to water either before 10 o’clock in the morning or after 18 o’clock; it is better not to water during the day - more harm than good. The soil should be moist to a depth of 8-10 cm, and watering must be uniform. (Put the jar where you are watering - it should contain 10 cm of water).

England is traditionally considered the birthplace of lawns. But the climate there is completely different. Therefore, it is best to use domestic seeds of different varieties. This needs to be done so that they, as it were, insure each other. If one variety falls out of the grass stand, another will gain strength. The most common mixtures are meadow and red fescue, perennial ryegrass, common and meadow bluegrass and others. By using different ratios of grasses in mixtures, you can get lawns various types. For example, a sports lawn is resistant to trampling; the front lawn has beautiful emerald thick grass.

The density of grass and its resistance to trampling largely depend on the root system of the plants. The more often we mow the lawn and the more we walk on it, the worse the grass takes root and the mass of roots decreases. To preserve and restore the root system, give the grass rest periods. This is possible if the ground part grows to a height of 12–15 cm.

required in areas where water stagnates after snow melts, rains, or irrigation. They arrange it as follows.

Return to contents

After this, the area is mulched with humus or peat, protecting it from the rapid evaporation of moisture and the effects of ultraviolet rays on the seedlings. If the soil in the area is heavy, sand is added to the mulching mixture. It is important that the material used for mulching does not contain weed seeds.

You can determine that your lawn needs watering by the following signs:

The next layer is sand (at least 10 cm). It must be compacted thoroughly.

To plant a lawn correctly, you need to know how much seed to take for a certain area of land. To calculate the mass of seeds sufficient for sowing a flat area, the following data are used: per square meter. meter used 25 gr. seed material. To sow slopes, you need to use a thicker sow.

We have already talked about the first and second haircuts earlier. The third and subsequent cuttings - we cut off 1/3 of the lawn height. It should grow no higher than 9-10 cm, i.e. after mowing, the height of the lawn should be 6 cm.

Fifth condition: compliance with sowing technology

The most dangerous time for a lawn is the fifth to seventh day after sowing: the seeds were dry, they were watered - they absorbed moisture, swelled, and if there is no watering at this time, they will dry out.

The lawn needs to be carefully looked after throughout the season: mowed, watered and fertilized.

Next time we will tell you how to protect your dacha lawn from diseases.

Sixth condition: timely feeding

Remove the fertile layer. A layer of gravel (10–15 cm) is laid on the infertile subsoil and compacted. Then pour a layer of sand (10 cm) and also compact it. Fertile soil (10–15 cm) is poured on top, rolling it with a roller weighing at least 100 kg. The skating rink can be replaced with a barrel by pouring water into it.

The previously removed soil should be poured over the planted seeds. Then compact it thoroughly.

Do-it-yourself lawn at the dacha: soil preparation, planting, care, practical advice

The lawn should be sown in the spring, when positive daytime temperatures begin.

Preparing the soil for planting a lawn

One of the most important and responsible stages is watering. Irrigate with gentle sprinkling, achieving uniform distribution of moisture in the soil to a depth of at least 10 centimeters. Make sure that water does not stagnate on the surface of the area.

If you stick a screwdriver into the ground, it will go in with little resistance;

  • Next, a layer of fertile soil is laid on top of the sand layer. The minimum thickness is 15 cm. If you plan to lay out a ground lawn, then the layer of soil should reach 30 cm.
  • You need to sow by hand, trying to scatter the seeds evenly throughout the entire area.
2 year.

Sprouts may appear on the fifth to seventh day. When you see friendly shoots, Lutrasil can be carefully removed. Before the first

This is the golden rule of lawn care. It is best to fertilize with liquid fertilizers, for example, mullein. The lawn needs not only to be fed, but also to ensure its breathing, that is, to “comb out” the old grass with a rake and aerate the soil by piercing it with a pitchfork. These two operations are combined in a lawn mower equipped with a rotary hammer aerator.

Modern landscape design is impossible without a beautiful lawn in the form of a beautiful emerald carpet. It serves as an excellent backdrop for flower beds and shrubs, harmoniously uniting the areas of the site into a single whole.

On heavy clay soils, before digging, add 10 to 15 kg/m2 of sand and, while digging, mix it with the soil. On the lungs sandy soils add 4–5 kg/m2 of peat.

Planting a lawn

This approach will protect the seeds from birds and allow them all to sprout well.

Lawn planting procedure

Before planting, the seeds are soaked for a day in warm water, adding potassium permanganate and agents to stimulate seed growth. After a day, the seeds are transferred to gauze, the water is decanted until the seeds flow, and as soon as they begin to crumble, planting begins. The lawn should be seeded in the spring, when daytime temperatures are above positive, approximately from April 10 to April 15. During sowing, check the soil for moisture by squeezing a lump of earth in your hand. If the soil sticks together, it means the ground is sufficiently moist and seeds thrown into the ground will not dry out. We plant the grass in squares, m by m, while marking with pegs. Seeds are sown randomly, first running your hand along the bed, then across it. The seeds can be sprinkled with sand, black soil, but you can leave them like that, you just need to pat them with a shovel and press them into the ground. You can use a special roller, but if you don’t have one, then slamming with a shovel also presses the grass seeds quite tightly to the soil.

Water the lawn in the evening; Before emergence, this procedure must be performed daily. If you sow a lawn in the summer, in dry and hot weather, you will have to water twice a day. Autumn sowing can save you from this hassle: frequent rains will ensure sufficient soil moisture. On average, lawn grass seeds germinate within two weeks, but this period can be either shorter or longer, depending on the grass varieties chosen. temperature conditions and humidity.

The grass begins to take on a bluish tint;

Prepare a couple of wide boards on which you will walk around the area so as not to leave marks;

The area seeded with lawn is treated with a rake, leveling the entire planting, and then the soil is compacted with a special roller. If you don’t have such a tool, you can use ordinary heavy, wide boards, which are laid one by one over the surface of the area, trampling them with your feet.

We follow the same rules.

How often should you water your lawn?

The height of the seedlings should be no higher than 10 cm. If weeds appear, they must be weeded before cutting. Weeding must be done while standing on plywood and very carefully so as not to damage the young tender shoots. When cutting for the first time, we cut off only 1.5-2 cm of the height of the seedlings, i.e. cut off the tops in order to stop growth.

Let's take a closer look at how to plant, grow and then properly care for the lawn at your summer cottage. The article discusses the types of lawns as well as planting techniques and year-round lawn care. All existing species Lawns are basically divided into two groups: seeded or natural.

Planting a lawn is an important stage when arranging the interior of a suburban area.

 - one of the most necessary and difficult activities in preparation for sowing. The time for digging the site is dictated by the weather: the soil should be slightly moist, not dry. During digging, it is necessary to carefully select and remove stones, roots of trees and shrubs, perennial weeds from the site, and break up clods of earth.

You need to take care of the lawn. Before the first shoots appear, the soil should not be allowed to dry out. When a lump of soil from the lawn crumbles and does not form into a lump, the lawn should be watered abundantly. The first feeding of the grass is carried out after the first mowing of the lawn. If there is too much fertilizer, the grass may burn. Well-fertilized grass is dark green in color. If there is a lack of nutrients, the grass will turn light green.

Usually the lawn is square or rectangular shape, however, it can be round or any irregular shape.

The earth is compacted when it is slightly weathered and dries out after digging. Using a long (2–3 m) level board, tying a rope along its edges and dragging it across the area, check whether its surface is sufficiently level. Stomp around the area, walk along it in small steps. While trampling, do not let go of the rake: level the ground, collect stones, roots, and debris. In addition, it is advisable to walk on the ground with a roller.

Do-it-yourself lawn: site preparation

However, along with the lawn grass, weeds will also sprout. Weeds must be removed. A month after planting, the soil is still soft and loose, so weeds can be easily removed along with the roots.

The lawn must be weeded, not allowing weed seeds to ripen. For example, quinoa retains its viability for a long time. To achieve a uniform carpeting of the lawn, it must be trimmed in a timely manner. If mowing is being done for the first time, it is better to use a scythe, this will minimize the uprooting of green plant matter.

And now a few words about natural (also called “wild”) lawn. This is the lawn that grows in the garden “by itself”, is cut every week from year to year, and winters well. And if you also take care of it, you will get a green, problem-free carpet. This is exactly the lawn on my property. Don't forget that Do not mow on wet ground (more plants will be pulled out)!

- beautiful, emerald green, thick, but labor-intensive to make and winters worse. The main types of decorative lawns are parterre, garden and meadow.

Before planting a lawn, you need to determine its purpose and configuration. This is influenced by the routes along which people are expected to move around the garden. Typically the shape of the lawn is rectangular or square. But him correct form can sometimes look a little boring, so an irregularly shaped lawn will look very original. We should not forget that the overly complex shape of the lawn with sharp corners and all kinds of bends requires more careful, sometimes very complex, care.

After digging, compacting and leveling, it is recommended to keep the area fallow and for several (4–6 or more) weeks to destroy weeds, dormant seeds or pieces of rhizomes that will gradually germinate. To stimulate weed germination, the area is watered immediately after leveling. These procedures take a lot of time, but are very effective in clearing the area of weeds.

After some time, the lawn grass will grow and try to produce seeds. In the first year of lawn growth, it is not advisable to allow insemination. It is important that the grass is well rooted, so it should be mowed.

Lawn grasses, lawn planting and watering

A green, thick lawn will decorate your dacha. A garden plot planted with lawn grass can be a relaxing place for the whole family. In addition, the lawn will protect the soil and retain moisture in it. Planting and caring for a lawn at your dacha is not at all difficult. If you follow the planting rules, you will see results within a month.

To create a green lawn at your dacha, you need to determine the location. Before starting earthworks at the dacha, you need to make a border of stone, brick or concrete with your own hands. This will make it possible to save the lawn soil from being washed away during floods and heavy rains. You also need to take care of drainage by making a slight slope to drain excess water from the lawn.

You need to water your lawn either early in the morning or early in the evening. Midday watering will not bring any benefit, since the water will evaporate very quickly and will not have time to reach the root system. Seed consumption is determined by a number of conditions:

I will be glad if the articleground cover plants

Never leave the grass!

Parterre

You also need to remember about the lighting of the lawn. After all, each area, in accordance with the rules for planting lawn grass, must be in the sun for at least some time.

In Europe, lawns appeared after the Crusades. Since the 16th century, lawns began to be built for various games. First in the Netherlands - for golf. Then this game (and for it, the lawn!) spread widely in Scotland and England, and later in the USA. IN late XIX centuries, sports lawns appeared in Russia. The first lawn mowing machine was invented by Edwin Budding in 1830 in Great Britain. English landowners can also be considered the pioneers of laying lawns: it was in the first half of the 19th century that types of grasses were selected that top scores when sowing.

You can mow the grass using a trimmer or lawn mower. The trimmer is convenient to use for small areas. For large areas, it is better to use a lawn mower. A lawn mower has advantages: it has a grass catcher (you don’t have to collect the mown grass), unlike a trimmer, the lawn mower cuts evenly.

There are two problems in preparing soil for a lawn: leveling the area and removing weeds.

Lawn care: mowing

If you follow all the technology for planting a lawn and provide timely watering, the grass will delight you with its greenery and require the first haircut within two months after sowing. The main thing that is necessary beautiful lawn, made with your own hands, is the correct soil ratio.

When the preparation of the site for the future lawn is completed, it is time to sow. And here it is necessary to find answers to three main questions: when to sow? What to sow? How to sow correctly? In order for the result of painstaking work to create a green lawn to please the eye, it is important not to miss a single essential detail. For autumn, you will need less seeds than in spring (about half). In this case, the planted plants have time to form a strong root system and overwinter well.

Making a lawn requires the presence of soil of appropriate quality. To do this, you first need to clear the area where the lawn grass will be planted. In order not to take moisture from the lawn, it is necessary to uproot weeds and tree shoots and remove all debris.

The main lawn care is watering. Lawn grass loves moisture. Sprinklers are used to water the lawn. Any type will do. It is important that the irrigation area matches the area of the lawn.

Purpose and form

You can level the area in two ways:

For sowing any seeds, a mixture of sand, turf soil and peat in equal quantities. Instead of peat, you can take black soil, leaf humus or rotted manure. Sod land it is necessary to sort through and clean from all kinds of roots. After removing the turf from the site where the soil was collected, relatively clean soil remains. All these components should be mixed and laid on the prepared area, fenced with a border, in an even layer of 15-20 cm. The laid earth should be thoroughly shed with water.

Planting a lawn with your own hands

Be sure to leave a reserve of about 0.5 kilograms. This supply will be needed later for additional seeding of grass.

Preliminary work on arrangement

At first there was a field of dandelions. We started mowing every week, and the composition of the grass began to change - the weeds, which do not like weekly mowing, began to disappear, and the cereal grasses began to grow. The dandelions did not completely disappear, so the remaining ones had to be dug up. After doing a soil analysis, we carried out liming before winter.

The second mowing is carried out in compliance with the same rules: lawn height 10 cm, cutting 1.5-2 cm, i.e. We pinch so that the root system develops in the first year. It is recommended to apply mineral fertilizers every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season. It is advisable to use special fertilizers for lawns.

is created at the main nodes of the composition, in front of the facade of the building, near fountains, ponds, and monuments. Grasses should be low-growing, produce a closed herbage, bright green color. For these purposes, red fescue, common bentgrass, and meadow bluegrass are used (100% of only one species). Mono-lawn in this case is best. If you use a mixture, you need to trust the company whose seeds you buy. It is not advisable to make the mixture yourself, since the seeds are selected according to many parameters, including the color of the grass. You cannot walk on the ground lawn.

How to make the land fertile?

For sowing, as a rule, mixtures of herbs are used, rather than individual species. A mixture of several (3-5) types of grass adapts and survives on the site more easily under different weather conditions than lawn grass of one type.

You should water your lawn regularly. It is not permissible to leave the lawn without watering for a long time. During hot months, watering is necessary 2-3 times a week. If the weather is cool, then once a week is enough.

The most big job consisted of leveling the surface - where there were small irregularities, they were covered with earth mixed with sand (see Fig. 3). Where there were large uneven areas (see Fig. 4), we cut the turf into squares, pulled it out, put it in the shade, leveled the ground and returned the turf to its place. Then they compacted it and watered it properly.

The last mowing for a young lawn is September 10-15, for an old lawn - September 15-20. But if the warm weather lasts for a long time in the fall and the lawn continues to grow, then you can mow later. In dry autumn, the lawn should be watered well at least once.

Lawn grass care

Landscape lawn

The soil under the lawn is leveled, all holes and bumps are removed.

The composition of the mixtures usually includes the following types of grasses: fescue (red, sheep's, reed), bentgrass (thin, or shoot-bearing), meadow bluegrass, perennial ryegrass. They are unpretentious, have a low growth rate, high winter hardiness and drought resistance, and actively resist pathogens, pests and weeds.

We have looked at everything you need to know about the lawn, as well as possible planting methods and their features. Anyone can plant a lawn at their dacha with their own hands. However, in order for the lawn to always be pleasing to the eye, it is necessary to regularly care for it.

First dig up the area, and then rake it out, thereby leveling the area. This is a rather labor-intensive, but universal method. Heavy watering of the lawn will compact the soil. Just don’t forget to level the entire area with a long-tooth rake before doing this. This will help, in case of imperfections in the relief, to eliminate all unevenness and, by adjusting the thickness of the soil, to make a slight slope towards the water drainage during irrigation and rainfalls.

Lawn grasses can be sown at almost any time: spring, autumn, and summer sowing are practiced; sometimes the lawn is seeded even before the snow melts, right on the ice crust. Therefore, the answer to this question must be found individually; it depends on a variety of factors, including: climatic conditions; the type of soil on the site and its condition; the ability to provide sufficient watering.

The area needs to be mulched after planting. For this you can use either peat or humus. The soil should be covered with a layer of approximately 0.5 cm.

I welcome you, friends, to the site tips for gardeners. Many summer residents and simply owners of private houses are interested in how to grow a lawn with their own hands. The same should be done if you have a reverse slope (remember, the slope of the lawn should be away from the house!). After two weeks, the lawn must be fed (and before that it must be watered).

Before leaving for winter (before the last haircut of this season) - comb the lawn, cut through the turf,. The grass should have a beautiful bright color. These should be shade-tolerant perennial grasses, resistant to trampling, with a well-developed root system. For such a lawn, mixtures of grasses are used: to those listed above are added bluegrass (common and woodland), fescue (sheep's, eastern, bearded), ryegrass (multicolor and annual), wheatgrass (Siberian and comb-shaped).Next, the area of the future lawn needs to be leveled and all depressions and hummocks removed. In accordance with the rules for planting a lawn, the area for it should not be perfectly flat. Specialists in landscape design It is recommended to make a slight slope towards the center of the lawn in order to ensure the drainage of excess water and prevent its stagnation. To eliminate excess moisture, the lawn construction rules require the installation of a drainage system.

How many seeds are needed for sowing? However, as with most plants in the country, the basis of care is regular watering. If you don’t live at the dacha permanently, then it becomes big problem. This can be solved by making an autonomous irrigation system based on a programmable watering timer.

Preparatory stage for creating a lawn

When autumn sowing It is important that at least one and a half months remain before the first frost. Optimal weather conditions are cloudy, warm weather, regular moderate precipitation. IN middle lane This is usually the second half of summer - the beginning of autumn. For the central part of Russia, the most favorable dates are considered to be August 10–25. How to grow a good lawn? To do this, you need to land correctly. If you have to sow the grass by hand, then the following scheme will do: divide the entire volume of seeds into two parts and sow in two approaches. Moreover, the sowing directions should be in 2 mutually perpendicular directions. Each part must be mixed with sand in a ratio of 1:3.

How to grow a lawnWith regard to mowing, you must follow the same rule - cut only 1/3 of the height. If you were unable to mow the lawn on time and it has overgrown, proceed as shown in Fig. 5. Regarding watering and fertilizing, there are no such strict rules as for a garden lawn: focus on weather conditions, your desire and the condition of the lawn. aeration

Lugovoi.

When laying out a lawn, you need to constantly fight against the emergence of weeds, which will simply “clog” the ornamental grass, and its appearance will look rather unattractive. To remove weeds, use preparations specifically designed for this purpose. At the moment, Roundup and Reglon are considered the best. But planting lawn grass after using these drugs should only be done after 2 weeks.

Sow 40–50 g/m2, or 4–5 kg per 1 hectare. When purchasing seeds, keep in mind that in the spring next year for overseeding and repairing the lawn, you will need an additional approximately 0.5 to 1 kg of seeds per hundred square meters. When stored for a year, the germination of seeds decreases, but only slightly (by 1–2%). When developing a new summer cottage, many people plan to install a lawn. If the ground in the chosen place is flat, some kind of grass grows on it, you can simply start mowing it regularly - and you will have a green lawn. But if there was a forest on the site, or the ground needs to be dug up for other reasons, you will have to start planting a lawn according to all the rules. We'll tell you how to make a lawn at your dacha with your own hands, what kind of lawn grass to buy, how often your lawn needs watering and mowing.

Planting a lawn

Removing weeds from an area to plant a lawn is the most difficult, almost impossible task. When industrially planting a lawn, proceed as follows. The area is sprayed with a special solution so that all weeds are killed. After that, 10 cm of the top layer of soil soaked in chemicals is torn off. Next, pour new specially prepared soil, or lay rolled lawn.To prevent weeds, the ground is covered with spunbond in the fall.Summer sowing is not applicable in hot and dry regions: direct sunlight is destructive to tender seedlings, and even regular watering often does not save the situation. Here it is preferable spring planting, and in the case of autumn, preliminary abundant watering is necessary, allowing the soil to be saturated with moisture to a depth of 50 cm or more.

How to properly water a lawn

After the seeds are scattered, you need to lightly embed them into the soil using a rake. After this, you need to walk over the entire area with a roller. This will ensure the seed is in closer contact with the ground, and also accelerates seed germination by 2...4 days.

And so that the quality of the coating does not differ from professional lawns. There is nothing difficult about this, you just need to strictly follow the recommendations.

Lawn mowing: a few important rules

Before winter it needs to be trimmed, watered and all leaves and debris collected so that it goes into winter clean. In the spring, the lawn needs to be combed, fed, rolled if the ground is too swollen, and then... However, you already know what to do. , then trim and water. This includes leguminous herbs- red, pink, white clovers, sweet grass, yellow and blue alfalfa, sainfoin. Such lawns are mowed from 1 time per month to 2 times per season, depending on how humid the weather is.

  • What is a lawn? This is a specially constructed, leveled area, sown with various turf-forming or creeping low-growing plants. Lawns can be sports, decorative or special purpose.
  • If we are talking about planting a lawn at an ordinary dacha, then an industrial method of preparing the land is hardly possible. Therefore, we have to resort to another method, which may not be as effective as the industrial one, but accessible to everyone.

If you create a lawn on the native land of your summer cottage, then it is best to prepare the land a year in advance. When will it come early spring and the soil allows, you need to start digging up the area so that the roots remain in the sun and the greenery goes down. Two or three diggings will destroy all vegetation in the dug area, and rotted roots will release nutrients to the soil. To protect the soil from sowing seeds by weeds, at the end of July a black film - spunbond - is placed on it. In the fall, the dug up area is covered with spunbond again, and in this form it waits out the winter. The film will protect it from sowing with foreign seeds.

Lawn - in winter

The final stage of planting is watering. The effect of soft sprinkling is suitable here. It is important that moisture does not linger on the surface of the soil, but evenly wets the deeper layers. Water the planted area only in the evenings. Until the first shoots appear, watering is carried out daily. First of all, it is necessary to select and properly prepare the site for the future lawn. It must be cleared of any vegetation: weeds, shrubs and trees growing here.Natural

It’s very good to cover the lawn for the winter: powder the top with a 1-2 cm layer of mixture (peat + sand + garden soil) and roll it in.

Let's stop on the garden lawn

The soil under the lawn is fertilized and covered with grass seeds.

 - spring (May) or late summer (second half of August), when the soil is warm and there is enough moisture. You can sow throughout the summer, even in the hottest weather, if you regularly water the plants and protect the crops with covering material (lutrasil, spunbond). Covering materials can protect the lawn from birds and wind.

Sports lawns are created at stadiums, hippodromes and other sports grounds. Special purpose lawns are needed at airfields, highway slopes and railways, hydraulic and other structures. Decorative lawns decorate gardens, parks, city boulevards, gardens and summer cottages. Depending on the location and composition of the growing herbs, they are divided into the following classes.

Lawn care throughout the year

First you need to dig up the area for the lawn. This is advisable if the land has not previously been dug on the site for a couple of years. If the soil is loose, then it is enough to pull out the weeds and proceed to cultivation. When digging, it is important to remove all weeds and root elements. The work is not easy, but it gives good results.If you want to sow the lawn the same year, you will have to work hard. You need to dig up the earth with your own hands in small sections, carefully sorting through each lump of earth and selecting the roots. The land ready for sowing must be treated with herbicides (for example, Roundup is good for this). Before sowing, complex fertilizers are added, which can also be dissolved in water by watering the soil before planting. According to lawn planting technology, seeds are sown in the spring, but there are some types of grass that can be planted in August. This is meadow bluegrass. planting a lawn

If the weather continues to be hot and dry after planting the lawn, you should water the area twice a day. But in the fall, the rains will take over the function of watering. Ideally, a lawn field should have a completely flat surface, but in reality it is impossible to find such an area. That is why the surface of the site needs to be leveled; see how to do this here. ("wild") lawn

In winter, do not pour salt on the paths under any circumstances! In March, scatter snow debris on the lawn that has formed after cleaning paths and paving. If an ice crust has formed somewhere, then break it, otherwise the lawn will have nothing to breathe.

Lawn mowing scheme by year.

. It is believed that in our climate the ratio of open and closed space as 2:1 (“open” is considered to be the part of the site planted below eye level), this open space naturally includes the lawn. You must estimate how much area to allocate for it, assess the illumination of the place. It is desirable that the lawn be of the same type - either sunny or semi-shaded. When preparing an area for a lawn Special attention should be given to the fertility of the land. If the soil is clayey and heavy, rational decision will dig it up and add some sand. To increase fertility, you need to add fertilizers and peat to the soil. Fresh manure cannot be used to fertilize the soil, as it may contain a large number of weeds or their seeds. When sowing a lawn, it is recommended to use boards, short but wide skis or a sheet of plywood so that foot prints do not remain on the loose soil . First class (highest) - parterre lawns.After digging, it is necessary to treat the area with a cultivator. The cultivator will chop up the remaining roots, which will increase the chances of destroying weeds and loosen the soil. Return to contents

Natural (wild) lawn

It is advisable to use mixtures of herbs. This allows for greater resistance to changes in weather conditions than when sowing one type of grass. When preparing a mixture, take from three to five types herbaceous plants, having different characteristics and preferences.The average time for emergence of seedlings is two weeks. The period may be shortened or extended. Everything will depend on the chosen type of grass, air temperature and humidity level. There is no need to achieve a completely flat surface. The main thing is that no obvious potholes or local irregularities are visible. It’s just great if, as a result of leveling, the site acquires a slight slope.

- this is the one that grows in the garden “by itself”, it needs to be cut every week for the first few years, then less often, it is thick, beautiful (but not emerald green!), easy to care for and winters well.

After the snow melts, comb the lawn well. Then, when the grass dries, aeration is necessary - piercing with a pitchfork or special slippers to a depth of 10-15 cm.

Before purchasing

The growth of lawn grass depends not only on the composition of the soil, but also on the quality of the seeds used for sowing. When planting a lawn, a mixture of several types of grass is usually used. They have different properties and complement each other. The choice of seeds must be approached with all responsibility. They must correspond to where the lawn is located - in the shade or in the sun, and the composition of the soil. Only by using high quality seeds can you achieve a lawn that will not subsequently require constant mowing. Landscape design specialists recommend using seeds that are adapted specifically to our climate, that is, domestic breeders.

Before sowing, the seeds are thoroughly mixed by adding sand or dry soil (1:1). The mixture is divided into two (or more) equal parts and one part is distributed over the surface of the soil, passing along the site, the other - across. Places along paths and along the edge of the lawn are sown somewhat denser. The sown seeds are lightly raked into the ground - this will protect them from drying out.

They are created in the main parts architectural composition garden, near fountains, sculptural groups, decorative ponds and so on. The main requirement when decorating parterres: the area of the main background should prevail over the area of the flower beds and other details in the composition. If the area of the flower beds is equal to the area of the grass base or prevails over it, the impression of fragmentation and diversity is created, there is no integrity in the perception of the whole picture. The lawn should be planted in such a way that it can be mowed at least 2 times before frost. In other words, it is good to plant a lawn before mid-summer.Creeping bentgrass grows quickly with careful watering, spreading along the ground, thereby creating a carpet of greenery.How to feed tomatoes after planting Do-it-yourself drip irrigation diagram

To get a beautiful, bright lawn, unfortunately, it is not enough to prepare your site, improve the soil, remove all foreign elements from the surface of the earth and purchase expensive lawn seeds. The lawn requires constant care. One of the most important ways to care for your lawn and keep it healthy appearance, of course, is watering.

If we are talking about watering as part of standard plant care, then you should pay attention to the quality of water for irrigation, the design of the irrigation system, the absence of areas with a characteristic accumulation of excess water, and also choose the correct irrigation regime for the lawn area in accordance with the type of planted soil and the variety of plant culture.

Features of watering when transplanting a perennial lawn

If for some reason the lawn area needs to be moved, the usual replanting method is often used. Carrying out these works requires some tricks from any gardener. Here are just a few of them:

  • The area of lawn planned for replanting is watered abundantly with water in advance. This will make it easier to remove plants from the soil and protect the root system from damage;
  • All shortcomings regarding the landscaping of your own plot, including the procedure for replanting the lawn, should be corrected during the spring season. The deadline for all planned manipulations with lawn crops is early June;
  • In case of urgent need or emergency situation with the condition of the existing lawn, replanting is allowed at any suitable time, regardless of the season. But in this case, you should be prepared for the fact that there is a danger that the transplanted herbs simply will not take root;

The main enemy of replanted lawn areas is drought, excessively high air temperatures and insufficient watering. When replanting an area, you should also prepare the area planned for replanting by excavating the required area to a depth of approximately half a shovel.

After watering the area abundantly and preparing the lawn for replanting, you should wait a certain period of time, sufficient for the water to be absorbed into the soil and for the soil with the growing lawn to soften.

When replanting, it is important not to remove lumps of earth from the roots of the transplanted vegetation. Upon completion of the replanting, you should compact the grass as diligently as possible by simply walking on it.

Watering is carried out in the following mode:

  • Daily using sprayers and sprinklers;
  • If the grass is transplanted in the hot summer, then watering is carried out twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening;
  • Overwatering of the transplanted area should be avoided, as this will prevent roots from developing and provoke putrefactive formations;
  • Watering should be done abundantly, but not excessively. The formation of puddles and stagnation in a newly greened area is absolutely unacceptable.

Caring for rolled lawn after replanting

Many people perceive it as a fairly simple process, not expensive, absolutely uncomplicated and guaranteeing simply amazing results. This is not entirely true.

Over time, a rolled lawn laid on the territory of a house or cottage can upset its owner with such manifestations as fading, dry areas, loss of leaf richness and color brightness. The reason for this is improper installation or an incorrect care program for the lawn planted in rolls.

Properly planned watering plays a special place in the program for caring for and maintaining the normal rate of growth and development of lawn grass. It is due to the receipt sufficient quantity moisture guarantees that the lawn spread over the area will take root throughout the entire area being developed.

Answering the question of how often to water the lawn after planting or laying, we can give the recommended watering schedule for rolled lawn:

  • To accelerate growth and development, the turf is not just moistened, but watered to a depth of up to 20 cm;
  • After each watering, it is worth bending the edge of the roll and checking the degree of wetness of the soil. If necessary, watering is repeated or reduced next time;
  • The first week after installation should be accompanied by daily watering, characterized by complete wetting of the soil, but without the formation of puddles and stagnation;
  • The laid lawn should be watered using sprinklers and sprinklers.

With proper installation work, an established lawn will require watering once or twice a week, but only if weather conditions are not accompanied by drought and heat.
