Peony "Henry Boxtos" - description

It should be noted that "Henry Boxtos" is a hybrid terry variety grown by Canadian breeders. After planting and proper care, the peony develops thick stems that are quite strong. Therefore, they hold blooming buds well. True, experienced gardeners still recommend tying Henry Boxtos peonies to a support so that during strong gusts of wind the stems do not bend or break. The height of an adult peony of the described variety usually reaches 90 cm, rarely 95-100 cm.

Light green leaves with a slight yellowish tint develop on the stems of the Henry Boxtos peony.

We should also talk about the luxurious flowering of the variety. Peony is distinguished by very large buds, which when opened reach about 20-22 cm. All buds are directed upward; the variety does not produce lateral flowers. The flower has a pink shape: large dark red petals are pubescent at the edges, and inside they are collected into a bud or a small depression. It is precisely for their juicy and spectacular flowering that the “Henry Boxtos” peonies, which have repeatedly won prizes at various exhibitions, are so loved by gardeners and collectors. And these peonies are ideal for cutting - they last and bloom for a long time. By the way, the variety itself blooms quite early - in June.

Thus, in addition to bright and early flowering, the Henry Boxtos variety is valued for the following properties:

  • resistance to;
  • frost resistance;
  • subtle delicate aroma.

The flower looks great when planted alone. It can also be used as the main element of compositions.

Variety "Henry Boxtos"

Caring for peonies of this variety is quite expected. For landing choose areas open to sunlight. The soil for them is preferably loose, with good drainage properties - “Henry Boxtos” does not tolerate excess moisture. Despite the fact that peony is frost-resistant and does not require shelter, planting it near walls or fences is not recommended. The plant does not tolerate drops from roofs and snow drifts. The variety itself is planted in the fall. The hole is prepared a month in advance: it is filled with peat, humus, and ash.

When growing the Henry Boxtos peony, do not forget about timely watering, fertilizing, loosening and weeding. As soon as necessary, install supports for the flower. Do not forget to remove the buds in the first year of your plant's growth so that the peony gains strength and develops its root system.

Herbaceous peonies include hybrid plants, as well as varieties from the milky-flowered peony.

The height of the plant can reach one meter. The powerful roots of peonies look like cones. They are very strong, like the rhizome. Several stems grow. The leaves are green in color, although their shades may vary.

Agricultural technology

The plant loves light and should be planted in open, sunny areas. Otherwise, the peony will not bloom. Light shade is allowed during midday hours.

The plant does not tolerate stagnant moisture - its root system rots. Therefore, peonies need to be planted in areas where groundwater does not come close to the surface.

Loamy soils with a slightly acidic environment are optimal for cultivation. If the soil is clayey, sand should be added. On sandy soils there are clays. The acidic environment is alkalized with lime (about 300-350 grams). The plant requires regular feeding and watering. Mulching of the soil is necessary.

The plant is usually propagated by cuttings, dividing the bush and layering. The second method is the most effective. The best time to divide the bush is from mid-August to mid-September. To do this, dig up the bush, measure ten centimeters from the root and trim it. The roots are washed and placed in the shade for several hours.

A division with two or three buds and a rhizome up to fifteen centimeters long is suitable for planting. Smaller specimens require additional care, while larger ones take root less well.

Before planting, the material is disinfected for about 30 minutes. To do this, use an infusion of garlic or a saturated solution of potassium permanganate. Then the cutting is kept in a heteroauxin solution. To do this, dissolve 1 tablet in 10 liters of water. Soaking time is about 12 hours. After this, the cutting needs to be dried and the sections rubbed with charcoal. Then it is planted in a hole, at the bottom of which a cushion of sand is poured. The distance from the buds to the surface should not exceed 5 centimeters. The hole with the division is filled with soil and watered. Before the winter cold, the planting is sprinkled with peat to a depth of 5-7 centimeters. With the onset of spring, there is no need to rush to remove the peat mulch - it is important to wait for the red shoots to appear. As soon as the shoots rise a little, the peat can be removed. Important! The sprouts are very fragile, so you need to act carefully.

Peonies can only be planted and replanted in the fall. The optimal distance between holes is 1 meter. It is not recommended to plant peonies closer, because over time they will grow and interfere with each other.

The dimensions of the pit are a cube with sides of 60 centimeters. It is filled to 40 centimeters with a mixture of peat, sand, humus and earth in equal proportions (usually 1 bucket of each component). Half a kilogram of bone meal or a quarter kilogram of double superphosphate is also added there, as well as a tablespoon of iron sulfate, 1 liter of wood ash and a teaspoon of potash. The remaining volume of the cube pit is filled with garden soil. It is compacted and watered.

When the bright spring sun still shines coldly from the blue sky onto the earth, the first flowers begin to awaken: crocuses, tulips and hyacinths. But when the heavenly body becomes a little warmer, charming peonies Henry Bockstoce (Henry Bockstos).

If we still haven’t convinced you of the superiority and beauty of peonies over other flowers, then, let’s admit, we left one variety for dessert. Majestic and luxurious hybrid terry peony variety Henry Bockstoce won all possible prizes at shows, but most importantly, he won millions of hearts. The peony has such an article that every gardener will take it as pride when growing it in a flower garden. Strong stems grow up to 90 cm in length, but even their strength is sometimes not enough to support buds of about 22 cm in diameter, so you have to take care of supporting the plant. The wine-red satin petals bend slightly at the edges, but are tightly packed in the middle. The bud resembles the shape of a ball.

Caring for peonies:

Herbaceous peoniesHenry Boxtos grow well in any soil, especially one rich in nutrients. They require almost no maintenance and are very frost-resistant. Peonies planted in well-fertilized soil do not need to be fertilized in the first year and several subsequent years. After transplantation, varietal qualities appear in 2-3 years! The most common method of propagating peonies is by dividing the rhizomes, which should be done in August or early September. In autumn, with the onset of stable frosts, around mid-October, the stems of peonies are cut off, leaving stumps 1-2 cm high above the buds. For the winter, peonies are covered with a layer of peat or unripe compost. There is no need to cover adult plants. When the soil thaws in the spring, remove the insulating cover, as the buds quickly begin to grow.
