When making a boat from plywood, you will face two main problems. First, you need to correctly size and manufacture the parts. Secondly, it is important to correctly assemble the boat frame. Dimensions and drawings

The first thing to do is decide on the size of the boat. We will make a boat 3000 mm long, 1400 mm wide and 500 mm high.
Let's decide on the length of the frame base. To do this, we need to know the length of the boat, two angles a and b, and the height of the boat.

We know the length and height - 3000mm and 500mm. Angle a - 100, angle b - 120.

Knowing these values, we calculate the length of the frame base.

L=3000-(h*tg(a-90)+h*tg(b-90))=2623,where h is the height of the boat

Now let's find the length of the bow and transom. Since they are inclined, their length will be greater than the height of the boat.

You need to decide on the width of the bottom. Let's take half the width of the boat - 700 mm. The bottom width will be 10% smaller, i.e. 630 mm. The boat reaches its maximum width 1/3 from the transom.

In our case, the maximum width will be at a distance of 1000 mm from the end of the boat. Thus, we transform the beam so that the maximum bend is at the point 1/3 * the length of the boat from the transom.

The length of the plywood for the side will be equal to the length of the transformed beams (upper and lower, respectively). The width will be equal to the length of the bow on one side and the length of the transom on the other.

Other sizes depend on the situation.


Boat frame

The basis will be timber 50*50*2523 mm. We screw a 50*50*630 mm transom to it on one side, at an angle of 90 degrees. We screw the deformed beams from the ends of the transom to the bow (the maximum convexity of the beam is 1000 mm from the transom).


We make 6 equally spaced cuts along the entire base (from the bottom side). The dimensions of the cutouts are 50*25 mm. We insert 6 beams 25*25 mm along the cutouts. We attach them to the base and side beams. The lower part of the frame is ready.


We screw on the bow and transom. Between the bow and the transom we again attach the deformed beams, but now along the top. The distance between the side beams is 500 mm in height and 350 mm in width. In fact, our sides are located at an angle to the base (an angle of approximately 120 degrees at the point of maximum convexity).


Making a frame for the sides

Note. Pay attention to how the beams are screwed: from the edge of the top to the edge bottom beam. It is important!
For this we use 25*25 mm timber.



Frame covering

We fasten the plywood to the beams with self-tapping screws 20 mm long. First we attach the sides. The plywood should fit snugly to the frame.

Then we sheathe the transom and bottom of the boat


We glue all the joints of the plywood with waterproof glue. Apply glue to all areas of the boat that, in your opinion, are vulnerable.

Next, we sew up the bow of the boat and fasten the seats. We cover the boat with inside(optional). You can make the floor and not cover the sides, it all depends on how much plywood you have. Do not plank the inside of the boat, this will add extra weight.


All remaining details are to your taste, the boat is ready and can be put on the water.

Tools and materials

The main characteristics of the future boat, such as strength and durability, depend on the plywood from which it is made. Therefore, its choice must be approached very responsibly.

Regular FK plywood, which is used for making furniture, is not suitable for these purposes. Therefore, it is best to use sheets of the following brands:

Brand Peculiarities
BS The veneer layers of this plywood are impregnated with bakelite glue. As a result, the material is resistant not only to water, but also to various aggressive environments, temperature changes, etc. negative impacts. The disadvantages include the high cost, and it is very difficult to find this brand on sale.
BC Bakelite varnish is used as an impregnation for veneer. Thereby this material It is also resistant to moisture and other negative influences, while its cost is slightly lower than the BK brand.
FSF It is made on the basis of phenol-formaldehyde resins. This brand is the cheapest and most accessible. Therefore, it is excellent for building a boat if it is not possible to purchase BS or BC sheets.

In addition to the type of plywood brand, when choosing, you should also pay attention to its quality:

  • there should be no gaps at the ends of the slabs;
  • There should be no knots or other defects on the surface.

Note!
You should not use plywood that is too thick, as the sheets must be flexible.
That's why optimal thickness is 5–6 mm.

In addition to plywood, you will also need some other materials:

  • boards and bars - must be dry and of high quality;
  • fiberglass - it is more convenient to purchase in a roll and then cut into pieces of the required size;
  • yacht varnish or waterproof paint.

As for the tools, the set is quite simple:

Sawing parts

You should begin work by marking and cutting out parts.

This process is carried out as follows:

  1. first of all, you need to mark the line of the bilge and transom (in diagram A, B, C);
  2. then a part of the sheet is cut along the marked line with a jigsaw;
  3. then the resulting blank should be applied to the opposite side and outlined with a pencil. Thus, it will serve as a template and ensure the symmetry of the boat. For convenience, the workpiece can be attached to the main sheet with clamps;
  4. then the second part of the sheet is cut along the intended line;

Before you start building wooden boat, it is necessary to prepare the main part of such a structure - the sides. To do this, you need to take the smoothest, longest, wide enough boards that are made of spruce or pine.

Look at the photos of homemade boats and you will see that there are no boards on its sides that have knots - this is very important. The boards for this part of the boat must remain in a dry place under slight pressure for at least one year.

Choosing boards for work

Before production begins, it is necessary to once again ensure that the boards are absolutely suitable for the job. Next, for each board you need to measure the required length and carefully cut them at an angle of 45 degrees. These boards will go to the bow of the boat.

After this, you need to plan them and check that the boards connected to each other do not have gaps. Then treat the ends with an antiseptic.


The next step is to prepare the bow of the boat, using a triangular block. It should be one and a half times longer than the width of the sides. The timber is also planed and covered with a layer of antiseptic.

Further instructions for making a boat with your own hands is to select a suitable board for the stern of the boat. Do not neglect the supply, because it is better to cut off the excess later than to search and start all over again.

Boat assembly

When the elements of the wooden boat are assembled, you need to begin assembling the product. You should start from the bow. Both sides and the triangular block must be connected to each other using self-tapping screws. It is advisable to immediately cut off the protrusions at the top and bottom so that they do not interfere in the future.

The next step is very important and responsible, since it is necessary to give the future boat its shape. You need to decide on the width of the boat and place a spacer in the middle. Choose a board for the spacer that is the same size as the height of the boat, so the sides will not burst.

Once the brace is properly installed, you can begin to shape the boat, call a few people to help or stock up on ropes to hold the structure in place.

Use the drawings and adjust the dimensions of the stern to make the boat so that when connecting the back wall and sides there are no gaps or cracks.

When the backdrop is installed, cut off the excess part from below, and on top you can make an element in the form of a triangle. Next we work on the spacers, which will constantly maintain the shape of the boat, as well as the seats, which are installed on top of the spacers. You can determine the number, as well as the location of these elements yourself, so it can be one, two or more places.

We align everything on the bottom in one plane and process protective layer the entire surface. When the glue dries, start making the bottom of the boat.

The best option for the bottom would be a galvanized sheet of metal. Try to find a sheet that matches the size of the boat.


How to make the bottom of a boat with your own hands

Place the future boat on a sheet of metal and trace its boundaries with a marker, do not forget to take a few centimeters of extra space just in case, you can always trim off the excess.

The next step is to cover the connection between the boat and its bottom with a special silicone sealant along the entire length in one line. On top of the sealant, until it has dried, a cord is laid in several rows - all this is necessary to ensure that the bottom of the boat is airtight and does not let water inside.

When this process is completed, we move on to connecting the bottom to the frame. Carefully place the bottom of the boat over the bottom of the boat. Use nails or screws to connect.

Start connecting from the middle and move towards the edges of the boat. Do the work as slowly and carefully as possible, as this part is very important.

We cut off the excess metal that sticks out more than 5 mm from the edge of the boat, and bend the rest with a hammer. It is also important to protect the bow of the boat from external factors using the same metal. Cut a rectangle of tin to the size of the boat.

Wherever wood and metal are connected, it is necessary to go through with sealant and lace. By this time, before you start “wrapping” the bow with metal, you need to treat the entire boat with an antiseptic.

Step-by-step instructions for building a plywood boat

To do this, in the place of each stitch, we drill two holes at a distance of 20 - 30 mm from the edge of the sheet. Insert the wire staple and twist the ends until the sheets of plywood are joined at the seam. Using spacers between the sides we give the desired shape to the boat hull. A narrow hull will reduce the boat's carrying capacity. A hull that is too wide will reduce the boat's stability on course. It is recommended to make the width of the housing as in the drawing.

6. Manufacturing of frames. Two frames must be made at a location with a step of 300 mm from the middle of the boat in each direction. There will be nine frames in total. You will also need four connecting elements sheets on the bow and 2-3 elements on the stern of the boat (these elements form the stern and stem of the boat). To obtain even cuts when preparing frames, it is better to use a circular saw.

7. The frames are installed on the bottom using self-tapping screws. Do not glue the frames!

8. Turn the boat hull over and use a manual milling machine with a 6-12 mm cutter we go along the seam connecting the hull halves from bow to stern. Depth of routing to bottom edge of plywood.
