How to care for a bouquet in a basket. Reasons for rapid fading of flowers

All women love flowers. And if they say they don’t like it, it means they’ve never seen truly beautiful bouquets. Spectacular bouquets are not sold in tents, shops near the metro and "TsvetOptTorg"; they are made only to order by real floral masters. But that's not what we're talking about now. Flowers always give a feeling of beauty to any girl, and this is an indisputable fact. Unfortunately, everything in our life is mortal, and the life of cut flowers is also short-lived. But there are some secrets that can help you slightly extend the life of cut plants. Florists Yana Flowers are happy to share them with the readers of our blog.

In this article we will discuss the reasons rapid fading colors. So, after you bring home a bouquet, it can “die” quite quickly.

Reasons for rapid fading of flowers:

1. You did not prune the plants before placing them in water

This is one of the most important mistakes that almost half of all buyers make. If you do not prune the plant, it will not be able to drink, because after being in the air, the vessels of the stem become clogged. If you remove the plant from the water, you must prune the plant before putting it back into the water. Often, customers ask the florist to trim the plants in the store so that they don’t have to deal with this “nonsense” at home. But, let us repeat once again: flowers are trimmed only immediately before placing them in water. When purchasing, florists simply adjust the length of the plants to fit the same size, but this is not the same thing.

There is an opinion that ideally flowers should be cut directly under water in order to 100% eliminate air contact with the stem cut. In theory, yes, it sounds nice. But in practice, no one will prune flowers underwater. First of all, it's inconvenient. Secondly, it's inconvenient. And thirdly, no-no. Therefore, it is quite enough to make a cut in the air and immediately put the plant in water. And to the unfortunate bloggers who reprint advice about pruning underwater over and over again, we advise you to shoot yourself! Why do you write about something that you yourself have never done?

How to properly cut a plant?

The cut must be made with a sharp tool. The stem must be cut, and not pinched with scissors, sawed with a blunt object, or broken (except for some plants). If you squeeze the plant's vessels when pruning, the plant will not be able to drink water and will therefore die.

At what angle is the cut made?

According to common opinion, the cut must be oblique, otherwise there’s no way. Now let's think logically. From the point of view of practical benefit, there is no difference between a stem cut straight and cut obliquely. The only difference is the area of contact of the stem with water. A stem cut obliquely has a larger area, so in theory it should feed on water better. But is this theory really true? According to many years of practical observations by the Yana Flowers team, this theory is not a panacea. It is important to make at least some kind of cut at any angle, otherwise your plant is guaranteed to soon wither from lack of moisture.

Well, we will leave the stories in various blogs regarding the inability of the plant to drink when the stem is cut straight, supposedly due to interference from the bottom of the vase, to the conscience of the “article writers” of the World Wide Web.

Where to make the cut?

Every plant has nodes on its stems. Some plants have more of them and are more noticeable, while others have the opposite. It is recommended to make a cut immediately above node connection, but in no case according to it, because saturation with moisture will be much worse. This is due to the structural features of plant cells and transitions between parts of the stem. If you have a stem with a small number of nodes, for example a rose, then it is enough to make a cut slightly higher than the previous cut. There is no talk of any “mandatory” two centimeters of indentation, since this plays absolutely no role. It is enough to retreat half a centimeter. If your cut shows black spots or other signs of aging and rotting, simply make a new cut a little higher until the resulting cut is fresh and free of foreign impurities. But this rule does not work if you have a plant that is initially colored through the stem, for example blue Rose or chrysanthemum. Then blue inclusions will be found along the entire length of the stem, and the cut will no longer be clean a priori.

Even though you have followed all the recommendations, the plant may bow its head and wither. In this case, update the cut of this plant again. Sometimes the cut falls into the " bad place", and access to water to the plant is still limited. If the plant is already completely lethargic, then it can be restored to its original appearance quite easily and painlessly. Read about this in our article “How to revive a plant?”

2. You brought a bouquet from the cold and immediately put it in water

The mistake is that sudden temperature changes are stressful for flowers. Plants need time to adjust to the ambient temperature and “come to their senses” a little. Put a bouquet of flowers for half an hour just to lie in the atmosphere in which you want to put the bouquet in a vase.

3. You put the plants in a bath of water.

Friends, it is not advisable to wet plant buds! They rot and fall apart. Yes, many plants drink leaves, but the buds are created for pollination, i.e. reproduction. Do not immerse them in water.

4. You put the plants in ice water

The water temperature that 100% of plants accept is room temperature. Or lukewarm water - it is absorbed faster by plants. This is basic biology; warm food is always digested better.

5. You poured too much/too little water into the vase

This is a very common mistake made by many of our clients. Different types of stems have different needs for the level of water in the vase. We will now talk about a standard medium vase about 30 cm high.

“Woody” stems (roses, hypericum, lilac) love a large amount of water. Pour water for the “woody” stems “to capacity”.

"Semi-woody" stems require half a vase's worth of water. For example, Chrysanthemum, Eustoma, Matricaria.

There are also non-woody and hollow stems that secrete mucus, which quickly causes the water in the vase to bloom. Plants such as gerberas, irises, and callas require only a 1/3 filled vase, since their stems quickly rot in water.

6. You don't change the water in the vase.

One day a client came to us and complained that his flowers weren’t standing well. According to him, he does everything correctly, adds Krizal to the flowers, prunes each flower, etc. It turned out that even when pruning the plants, the client did not change the water in the vase. And I put the plant in old (rotten, one might say) water with a new cut. And for this person, a real discovery was the fact that it is not enough to just cut the stem, you also need to change the water. Ideally, water changes should be done every day, if the weather is very hot - 2 times a day. If the flowers are in a cool room - where no more than +10 degrees, then once every two days. Between water changes, do not forget to wash the vase with cleaning products to kill fermentation bacteria as much as possible. Also remember to wash the stems that have been under water for some time. Or wipe them with a damp cloth.

7. You place flowers in a draft or direct sunlight

There should be no sudden temperature fluctuations. The lower the room temperature, the longer your bouquet will be stored. Minimum value temperatures - not lower than +5 degrees. There must be ventilation in the room, but there should not be a draft where the plants themselves are located. Plants love wet air. Leaving a container of water will help you artificially humidify the air. Try to use a vessel with a wide evaporating surface area.

8. You place flowers next to fruits and vegetables.

Ripe fruits release gas - ethylene. It has a very bad effect on the plants adjacent to it. Plants next to fruits wither right before our eyes.

9. You put plants in one vase that you don’t want to keep together.

We are talking primarily about lilies and carnations. If possible, try not to place these plants with others in the same vase. Naturally, if you have a prefabricated bouquet, then you shouldn’t specially pull the carnation out of it. In this case, simply change the water more often. There are also paired incompatibilities, for example: forget-me-nots and daffodils, lilies and cornflowers, tulips and forget-me-nots with lilies of the valley.

10. You do not pick off those leaves of the plant that come into contact with water.

ONLY plant stems should be in the water. All excess growths of stems, thorns and small branches must be removed without fail. The presence of a large amount of organic material in water contributes to rotting and the proliferation of bacteria, and therefore to accelerated fermentation and blooming of water.

11. You leave too much foliage on the plant.

All plants distribute water evenly both to the leaves and to the flower itself. If the plant has too many leaves, there may simply not be enough water for its upper part - the bud, then the flower will become sluggish until it dies completely. To avoid this, remove unnecessary foliage from the plants, leaving only the leaves close to the bud. This is why in stores you can sometimes see less foliage on plants than usual. This is not done to hide the old age of the flower, but to help its bud. Although it depends on which store, of course...

12. You do not use professional water disinfectants for plants

Of course there are a lot folk recipes such as vodka, aspirin, sugar, vinegar and a bunch of other things added to vases. What do you prefer: to be treated by a professional modern doctor with experience and modern means treatment? Or be treated by a village doctor who uses plantain and iodine mesh for all diseases? Take our advice - don’t skimp on the bag professional product, called Chrizal, which is dissolved in water before adding the bouquet. Moreover, if you buy expensive bouquets, then it’s ridiculous to save on a bag for 20 rubles. Krizal is a professional thing that really helps to disinfect water, and the plants last longer. Water blooms more slowly, and the very change of water in the vase can be done 2 times less often. In addition, Krizal contains special vitamins. There is a universal and special crystal - for each type of plant. The fact is that the plants sold in stores are grown artificially using growth stimulants and other chemical influences. These are not plants from your garden planted in manure. It is far from certain that folk remedies will help you with plants grown entirely artificially using chemicals, and special remedy Krizal is guaranteed to help. Trust florists Jana Flowers. Ask Krizal every time you buy flowers, and see for yourself how it works.

13. You don’t water flowers in a box, basket, or flower toy.

When the recipient is given a composition that is based on a special floral sponge for flowers, this composition must be watered regularly. Thus, the sponge will be saturated with water again and nourish the plants standing in it. IN hard to reach places for watering (this is especially true for flower toys), watering is done as follows: take a regular syringe with a needle, draw up water, stick the needle between the plants in different places on the sponge and inject a large number of water into each touch area. Keep in mind that, for example, for toys made of flowers, each part of the body is a separate sponge. Therefore, it is watered into each part of the toy separately.

14. You don't pack plants to move them down the street.

We are talking about packaging for transportation, do not confuse it with a gift option. It is not always that such packaging is really needed, because at temperatures from +5 to +15 you don’t have to pack flowers when moving them, unless of course you are going to travel to public transport. In all other cases, packaging is extremely important. If the cold weather outside is less than 5 degrees, packaging is strictly required. Plants are made up of a lot of water. And as soon as this water inside the stem freezes a little, the plant is guaranteed to die. When water freezes, it expands and breaks the entire structure of the plant cells from the inside, so you cannot bring even a slightly frozen plant back to life. If it is too hot outside, then the plants increase evaporation, and therefore there is an intense loss of precious moisture. To make the plight of flowers a little easier, hide them from hot temperatures and direct sun rays for packaging. Naturally, we are not talking about leaving a fully wrapped bouquet in a stuffy car for “half an hour.” Packaging won't help here. In very hot and very cold weather, flowers must be delivered to a plant-friendly environment as quickly as possible.

Even if you live in the house next door to the store and buy one symbolic flower in minus temperature, then your flower must be wrapped on the way across the street. You don’t go out naked into the cold, so why drag a defenseless plant there? The flower will not withstand temperature changes and, in theory, will die much faster. Especially if it is a delicate plant.

Also, do not forget that no self-respecting flower delivery company will offer walking courier services. Because the delivery time for flowers increases, and an ordered bouquet by a courier without a car can theoretically hit every “corner” on the way to you.

15. You don't spray plants that need it.

Plants with leaves normal looking in hot weather, it would be a good idea to spray with a spray bottle several times a day. Flowers absorb moisture through the leaves in the same way as through the stem. Similar to a person breathing through skin. Therefore, do not forget about this method of “watering”. For example, roses really love spraying their foliage. Just remember that it is not advisable to wet the buds of plants. Very important - do not spray the “velvet” leaves, they don’t like it.

16. You buy flowers in tents, “TsvetOptah”, “TsvetRoznitsa” and similar offices

Tents are separate pavilions with no professional equipment for flower care, for example, a refrigerator. Both in winter and summer, flowers stand in poor conditions and are obviously sold in poor condition.

But most of the wrong purchases are made in the so-called “flower hypermarkets”, where there are a bunch of dead bouquets or flowers in bundles. Moreover, sellers are strictly prohibited from making bouquets of flowers in bundles. In addition, there are no florists, only sellers, most of whom have no idea about floristry. Why is it forbidden to open packages? But because the entire operating system of such stores is built on a magic potion in which plants stand. As soon as you take out a bouquet or a pack of roses from this potion, the flowers fall apart before your eyes. Everything falls off, including the buds. That is why opening the packages is prohibited under penalty of dismissal. As is known, returning flowers is impossible by law. And I bought it, I mean I bought it. All bouquets in such offices are made at the main warehouse by “professional florists” from Uzbekistan. And then the resulting “masterpieces” are taken to stores. Half of the bouquets are outright rotten. Poor flower quality is skillfully masked by supporting plant buds with greenery and neighboring plants, or by adding packaging tinsel. Or the most trump option (and alluring to tasteless buyers) - eyelashes on buds made of packaging mesh. At the same time, unfortunate buyers of these “masterpieces” do not understand that the mesh is needed not for beauty, but to prevent the bud from falling apart.

Where does this cheap, half-rotten flower come from?

The flower is bought in Holland at stock after an auction. At the stock market they sell everything that is left after the trading day for next to nothing. Have a nice flower There are not and cannot be such stores, because the entire principle of operation of the low-price mass segment of the flower market will collapse. Simply put - expensive and rich for 300-500 rubles. Which is already funny. And expect miracles in terms of durability from bouquets from the very beginning bad topics more funny. But “people are hogging it.” People flock there in droves, which is why “hypermarkets” are still thriving today. And the saddest thing is that the bouquets are so tasteless that it’s a shame to even sell them, and it’s doubly a shame to buy someone as a gift. Never give bouquets from such establishments to a professional florist, otherwise he will curse you. :)

Well they can't nice flowers inexpensive! Growing quality plants is a big and complex business. The best plantations sell flowers for such money that you will be horrified just by the amount of purchase in Holland, not to mention the amount of the same flower in Russia. Therefore, if you care what to give, then buy flowers in good individual workshops with good florists. After all, a master of his craft always puts a piece of his soul into his work, which you will never feel from an ordinary “tent shop”.

17. You didn’t do any of the above, but the flowers still withered

Friends, a plant is a living organism. When buying a hamster, the seller will not give you a guarantee that the hamster will not die in a week, will he?) The plant travels thousands of kilometers on its way to Russia, and the stress received by the plant may well affect its durability. Also, a flower can wither for no reason, life just happens that way! Accept it. If you have ahead of schedule the sour cream has gone sour, you just buy a new one. And with plants too. No one can give you a guarantee that the plant will last so many days.

In addition, there is still a possibility of you making a mistake according to the above points. When a person has no experience, it seems to him that he is doing everything right. However, experience plays quite a role in caring for plants. important role. Perhaps you did not take into account some little thing. Practice and everything will work out.

Another reason could also be a lack of water for the plant itself. You seem to have trimmed it, but it still doesn’t have enough water. The flower becomes sluggish. Such a plant can still be brought back to life - reanimated. Look for an article on plant resuscitation on our blog.

Flowers in boxes quickly gained popularity, gradually shifting traditional bouquets to the background. Many people love them for their practicality: no need for a vase, easy care, and Jewelry, sweets and mysterious notes take their rightful place next to the buds. There are several composition options:

  1. flowers in a round box;
  2. compositions in a rectangular box;
  3. bouquet in a square box, heart-shaped

Each gift requires a special approach to preserve the pristine freshness of flowers.

Caring for flowers in a hat box

  • Do not expose the gift to sudden temperature changes. In winter, place the bouquet by a slightly open window so that it gets used to warm room. In the summer, it is worth turning on the air conditioner in the car on the way to a holiday, but do not direct the cold stream of air at the flowers.
  • Remove dried petals promptly.
  • Do not remove the buds from the box. If the stem “saw the light” once, it will wither in a matter of hours. But if, nevertheless, this happened, do not be upset, make an oblique cut on the stem and carefully insert it back into the box, only in a different place. There is no need to try to get into the exact hole from which you pulled the flower.
  • Flowers don't like fruit. Sweet fruits secrete special microorganisms that adversely affect the health of the petals.

Give the recipient a little instruction, he or she will be delighted with the gift!

How to water flowers in a box

So, you were given flowers in a box. How to water a bouquet? The water for them must stand for at least an hour so that the chlorine from the tap evaporates.

Usually, flowers do not need abundant watering, since you risk “flooding the flowers” and ruining the box itself - it is cardboard, after all. If you have poured a lot of liquid, under no circumstances should you drain the water that the floristic oasis has not absorbed! It is advisable to water only when the oasis is completely dry, as a rule, this happens 4 days after receiving the flowers in the box.

Watering flowers on a sponge (floristic oasis)

The main rule is that the sponge (floristic oasis) should always remain wet. You can check it by touch, pressing lightly with your fingers. Caring for a bouquet will remind you of watering indoor plants.

Mentally divide the box into three equal parts, identify two central points and feel free to pour water, but no more than 70 ml in total, and only when the sponge is dry.

Attention! Never spray flowers in a box with a spray bottle.

How to save a bouquet: general rules

Cut flowers also do not like temperature changes, so do not rush to bring a bouquet from a frosty street into a hot room, leave it for 5 minutes in the lobby, on the veranda of the house, where it is cooler. When transporting it in a car, make sure that the interior is not too hot!

At home, choose a bouquet in the least sunny and hot place, away from heating devices, in a well-ventilated room. It is better preserved at temperature environment+18+20 degrees, with more high temperatures The evaporation of moisture will be more active, and the water may deteriorate faster.

There should be no dough in the flower vase; the stems should be freely inside the vessel with water, so as not to provoke the growth of bacteria. Before pouring water, the vase must be rinsed thoroughly and, if necessary, washed with soap. Under no circumstances place flowers in ice water, it should be room temperature!

The bouquet will last much longer in settled water (the water you use to water indoor plants will do), because chlorine is in fresh water. tap water will not be pleased with the flowers. The website flowery-blog.ru advises adding a couple of tablespoons of sugar (per 1 liter) to a vase of water; this will prevent the water from turning sour and will also be a good feed for flowers.

In addition to sugar, aspirin (12 tablets per 1 liter of water) is suitable as an additive for the bouquet; it will disinfect the water and, accordingly, prolong its freshness! An alternative could be Activated carbon(2 tablets per 1 liter of water), it will prevent acidification of the water and the formation of mucus on the stems.

Almost all flowers love slightly acidified water; to do this, dissolve literally a few crystals of citric acid or a couple of drops of apple cider vinegar in 1 liter of water. A universal additive would be table salt (1 tsp per 1 liter of water), or a piece charcoal, which needs to be placed in a vase. According to people's councils A silver coin placed in a vase of water has a similar effect.

You can use specialized nutritional supplements that are designed for cut flowers. A solution with such ingredients nourishes the flowers and allows them to remain fresh and beautiful longer. You can buy them directly at the flower shop, the most famous are “Crizal”, “Bud”, “Bouquet”, “Tsvetin”, “Etisso”.

Attention!
Be careful! After all, in composite bouquets different flowers(especially exotic ones) can react completely differently to additives. It is better to use them in mono compositions. Thus, it was noticed that roses and dahlias stand better in aspirin solution, tulips, carnations, asters and chrysanthemums - in sweetened water, and gladioli in acidified water. But activated carbon will benefit any flowers, just like a silver coin.

Before putting the bouquet in the water, remove all the leaves and thorns on the lower part of the stem that will be in the vase, otherwise the water will quickly “bloom”. Be sure to update the sections, this must be done under running water running water so that flowers deprived of moisture immediately replenish its deficiency.

In this case, cuts must be made along an oblique line. sharp scissors, or pruning shears. This will increase the moisture absorption surface! Flowers with a hollow stem will last longer if a damp piece of cotton wool is placed in the cavity. Afterwards, it is advisable to immediately place the bouquet in a vase with water (it should already be filled) to minimize the contact of fresh cuts with air.

Do not forget to regularly change the water for your flowers, checking the cuts each time and, if necessary, renewing them under running water. Cut wilted flowers on multi-flowered branches in a timely manner, remove wilted flowers, dried leaves, and petals.

How to care for flowers on a floral sponge

Nowadays such flower arrangements are a worthy competitor to the usual bouquet. In this case, the flowers are fixed on a special moisture-absorbing sponge, it is also called “flora”. Caring for such a bouquet is similar to watering indoor flowers: you need to make sure that the sponge always remains slightly damp. To do this, water it with settled water at room temperature; no additives are required. Usually one glass of water daily is enough (this depends on the size of the sponge). Don’t pull the flowers out of the sponge; you won’t be able to put them back in, and if they are deprived of a nutrient medium, they will die!

How to preserve a bouquet of different flowers longer

It is worth considering that some flowers do not like being next to each other. Thus, roses and carnations are irreconcilable with each other, poppies and lilies are single plants, like lilies of the valley and daffodils, it is better to make mono-compositions from them. Daffodils and lilies of the valley, in addition, secrete milky juice, which inhibits other flowers in the overall bouquet.

Interesting!
Bouquet lovers will enjoy a selection of paintings by Polish artist Joanna Domagalska and floral paintings by Carmelo Blandino.

It is believed that flowers with large anthers (stamens) - lilies, tulips, bells and others - will last longer if you remove them (with sharp scissors). This will prevent the pollination process, and the delicate petals will not get dirty with pollen.

Gerberas, which have a fragile stem, stand better in a vase if their stem is immersed in water by no more than one third; being completely in water, it quickly rots. In this case, it is recommended to first rub the stem sections with salt. Tulips and irises love cool water; you can even add a couple of ice cubes to the vase to keep it that way.

Carnation and rose prefer water at room temperature. For flowers with dense, woody stems (roses, lilacs, jasmine), you can strip the bark at the base to facilitate water absorption. Dahlias and cyclamen should be cut after they have bloomed: these flowers do not bloom in a bouquet. Other plants can be cut at the bud stage. Mimosa has its own whims - it is better to immediately put it in warm water, and sprinkle the inflorescences cold water from a bullet gun.

Floral foam(sponge for flowers, oasis for flowers, piaflor) is a special floral device made of an artificial substance with small pores. It absorbs water well and remains wet for quite a long time.
This sponge first appeared in Denmark in the 40s. XX century, and since then the secret of its production has been kept “with seven locks.”

This foam is intended for attaching flowers in compositions, as well as for extending their life.

Types and features

Today, manufacturing companies produce many various types and forms of piaflora, depending on their specific purpose.

For living bouquets, an oasis of green color is produced. Most often, it is sold in the form of a rectangular block, on which 2 cut lines are marked. You can also find an oval or cube shape.

The oasis is quite easy to cut, so if necessary, you can cut any shape out of it. If you don’t want to do this, you can look in stores for ready-made shapes of balls, hearts, wreaths, carriages, trains, animals, hemispheres, numbers, cars, globes, etc. True, they are rarely found on sale and are more expensive than ordinary ones.

Some forms are sold already attached to the base, so such compositions can be hung or immediately placed on the table.

Piaflor allows you to keep flowers looking fresh longer, and also gives free rein to your imagination, because the flowers will stay in the composition, no matter at what angle you place them there.

By absorbing large amounts of water, the oasis becomes up to 30 times heavier, so the flowers do not wither for a long time. In addition, the sponge is impregnated with a special solution that prevents bacteria from multiplying.

In order for the flower arrangement to keep its shape well, you need to take into account that for different colors provided different types floral foam:

  • Ideal(Ideal) - suitable for any type, as it has moderate density.
  • Classic(Classic) - this option should be chosen if the composition will consist of specimens with bending stems.
  • Standard(Standart) - suitable for those who create a composition of flowers with thin shoots, as well as for small home bouquets.
  • Premium(Premium) - this foam has improved characteristics, it has much higher density and elasticity, it is better to use for plants with massive, unbending shoots.
  • Instant(Instant) - suitable for any plants, its distinctive feature is the accelerated rate of soaking.

All these sponges are green. Multi-colored oases (Rainbow) are also produced, which have proven themselves well for compositions of both fresh and artificial flowers. Bright colors allow you to use these sponges as part of a composition and not hide them.

For artificial

If you are making bouquets of dried plants or artificial flowers, a special floral foam Oasis Sec. It comes in gray or Brown, but if desired, it can be repainted with an ordinary spray. No need to soak.

When working with such an oasis, you need to be careful, as it crumbles finely and can be transferred to the foam for fresh flowers, worsening its water permeability. In addition, some florists use the same sponge to create non-living bouquets as for living ones, only without soaking it.

Instructions for use

Before use, read the instructions for using the sponge, because the fresh appearance and beauty of the bouquet depends on its correct use:

  1. Cut a piece of foam of the required size (you can do it with a stationery or construction knife, and some recommend doing this with already wet foam to avoid inhaling dust).
  2. Take a clean deep bowl and pour water into it. The depth of the bowl should be at least twice the height of the sponge.
  3. Place the cut part in the water and leave it in this position for about 1 minute.
  4. Wait until the sponge sinks to the bottom.
  5. Take it out, place it in a vase, basket or other container and use it to arrange bouquets.
  6. Trim flowers lower leaves and thorns, so as not to get into the foam and start to rot, cut the tip of the shoot at an acute angle by 2 cm.
  7. If you will be using a basket or other container through which water may leak to create a flower arrangement, wrap the sponge underneath in thick plastic and secure it with tape.
  8. If you need to attach the oasis to the base, use a special spiked tattoo called a “frog”, oasis-fix adhesive (or regular plasticine), and adhesive tape.
  9. If you are planning a round-shaped bouquet, the piaflor must be placed much higher than the edge of the container in which it will be located, and if future flowers are located at the same level, it should be placed slightly below the edge.
  10. Every day, water the sponge with a small amount of water, distributing it evenly over the surface and preventing it from drying out.

It is advisable to draw up a composition plan in advance and think about where and what flowers will be located so that extra holes do not disturb the density of the foam.

When cutting the sponge, remember that it should fit freely into the container for the bouquet. Pressing and pushing will cause it to shrink and close the pores.

When disassembling a flower arrangement, pay attention to the condition of the floral sponge; perhaps it can be used again.

Touch the foam - the presence of moisture indicates good condition. In this case, the sponge must be carefully wrapped in polyethylene, limiting the access of air so as not to dry out.

However, do not despair, if the sponge feels dry to the touch, it can be restored. To do this, you need to bring water to a boil, drop some liquid soap and pour this solution over the foam. But keep in mind that in terms of moisture-absorbing properties it will already be inferior to a new sponge.

How to replace a floral sponge

Before the invention of piaflora, florists used sand, soaked soil and moss wrapped in cellophane. Nowadays it’s hard to imagine anything more convenient than a floral sponge. Other materials will not be able to provide flowers with such access to moisture and their reliable fastening.

For bouquets of artificial flowers, you can use ordinary polystyrene foam or construction foam, and to make the flowers stick better, drop a little glue into the hole.

Floristic oasis can also be used to make artificial bouquets, read the process in more detail.

What you will need

To make a bouquet, prepare:

  • bouquet maker - a special plastic tube device for a bouquet (in simple terms - a microphone);
  • floral foam, preferably brown (for artificial flowers);
  • thick wire;
  • pliers;
  • wire cutters;
  • artificial buds (voluminous and flat);
  • thin polystyrene foam and a piece of fabric (for flat buds);
  • needle and thread;
  • glue gun (if available).

Step-by-step instruction

To make a bouquet, follow this sequence:

  • Cut a piece of wire to the desired length with wire cutters.
  • Using pliers, bend the tip of the wire until it looks like a fishing hook.
  • This hook must be inserted into the middle of the flower bud.
  • Check to see if it's stuck there well.
  • Repeat the procedure for other buds that will be in the center of the bouquet.
  • Prepare the wire for the buds that will be located along the edges: cut it, bend the wire with a crochet hook, and then make a small smooth bend a little lower, as if you were going to twist the letter “O”, but changed your mind.
  • Place the bud on the hook without covering the bend.
  • Check if the wire is coming out.
  • Repeat the procedure for all the buds that will be located along the edge of the bouquet.
  • For flat buds, you need to step back a little more from the edge of the wire than for voluminous buds, and bend them with a crochet hook.
  • Cut out circles from foam plastic with a diameter 2 times smaller than the bud.
  • Cut circles from the fabric of such a size as to completely cover the foam on both sides and leave a small tail.
  • Using the long end, insert the wire into the foam, push it to the end and place it on the hook. It will look like a button.
  • Bend the short end of the wire from below so that the foam holds well.

It is believed that the shelf life of flowers in a basket, equipped with a special spongy material in the center, from which the flowers take moisture, is about two to three weeks. However, in order to put this theory into practice, it is important to know a few tips for caring for such flowers:

    Intake of moisture. Initially, the florist salesperson additionally impregnates the sponge with a special solution, which allows it to remain moist longer and, in some cases, contains some nutrients, prolonging the life of cut flowers. You are also required to ensure that the sponge does not dry out. To do this, it is enough to use a small amount of settled water daily for irrigation.

    In some cases, we may not be talking about a basket, but about real figurines made from fresh flowers. They also need regular watering, but in this case the procedure is somewhat more complicated. To water the main part, you need to carefully pull out 1-2 flowers from the top of the figure and carefully pour them into the resulting gap required amount water. Small elements (for example, if we are talking about an animal figurine, these could be paws and a tail) are attached to the composition separately and have a separate source of moisture, so it would be most convenient to use a syringe or similar compact tool.

  1. Plant care. In addition to watering, it is necessary to monitor the appearance of the flowers: wipe with dust and spray large leaves and stems with a spray bottle, while avoiding getting excess moisture directly on the bud. This rule also applies to traditional bouquets - the buds should never remain wet.
  2. Temperature and storage conditions. Like all fresh flowers, compositions in a basket do not tolerate proximity to heat sources, be it direct sunlight or central heating. However, they should not freeze either, so try to choose a place away from drafts. However, there is one caveat: at night it is still better to move the flowers to a cooler place (in the summer - on the balcony, in the colder season - closer to the windows). The next morning you will see for yourself healing properties night coolness for fresh flowers - they will look much fresher and last longer.
  3. Maintain the integrity of the composition. Except for short-term and unavoidable cases of removing individual flowers from the figures for watering, it is highly not recommended to remove the stems from the nutrient sponge. Without receiving proper moisture, the plant will lose its healthy and fresh appearance much faster. appearance and it certainly won’t last the promised 2-3 weeks.
  4. Lack of neighborhood. Of course, you can place the trash bin nearby with harmless flower pots(provided that the plants in them do not emit vapors harmful to the composition). But as for vases with fruit, it is better to avoid such proximity. Few people know, but the same apples over time emit ethylene vapors that are quite harmful to living plants. It is better if the flowers in the basket are placed alone, but in a visible place.
  5. Nice atmosphere. It has been proven more than once that fresh flowers (especially roses and carnations) react quite sensitively to sounds and the atmosphere in the house as a whole. At a minimum, try not to play loud music in a room with a green “pet”. Besides, this great way avoid quarrels in the family.

As you can see, the flowers in the basket are quite unpretentious and do not require excessive time and effort to care for. And thanks to such simple and obvious rules, you will be able to enjoy such an unusual and valuable gift for as long as possible.

And in order for the flowers in the box to delight you with their freshness longer, you need to properly care for them.

As the sponge dries, it is necessary to replenish it with water so that it gives off the required amount of moisture. It is most convenient to water it from a watering can with a thin spout once a day; it is better to take water that has been standing (at least an hour) at room temperature. After watering, you need to wait until the sponge absorbs as much moisture as possible, and drain off the excess.

Spray the buds

It is good to additionally spray the buds and leaves with water from a spray bottle. Although there is also a nuance here: do not overdo it so that there is not a lot of water left between the petals of the buds. You can spray the heads generously and then remove excess water. If flowers in a box lose petals and leaves and they fall inside the box, remove them immediately to prevent them from rotting in the humid environment.

Where to place the bouquet?

It is best to place the bouquet away from direct sunlight and drafts (away from the window - do not place it on the windowsill). High temperatures will dry out flowers faster, so do not place them near radiators or heating appliances. When the bouquet has already lost its original freshness and aesthetic appearance, it is worth removing the dried flowers from the sponge. The oasis sponge itself can be reused, you just need to rinse it well and dry it. The box can also be used to create new compositions.

Caring for flowers in a hat box

Flowers in a hat box require exactly the same care as flowers in a basket, with the exception of some details. Firstly, do not take the flowers out of the oasis; it is unlikely that you will be able to insert them back. Secondly, use a watering can with a long narrow spout so that when watering, you don’t get the box wet. Some florists use a syringe for this. Thirdly, it is better to immediately remove fallen leaves that fall on the sponge so that they do not begin to rot. The floral sponge from the basket or box can be reused. After the flowers wither, it needs to be washed and dried, and only then re-soaked with water.

Features of caring for different varieties of cut flowers

Did you know that different flowers require different care and can stand in a sponge or vase different time. For example, a rose can last up to 30 days in a sponge if you water it boiled water. Carnation will delight you for two weeks without special care. Spring flowers such as irises, tulips and daffodils love cold moisture. The sponge in which they stand can be kept chilled with ice cubes. But peonies love warm water; to water them, it can be heated or left to room temperature. Freesias fade unevenly; those branches that dried out earlier must be removed from the composition. Hippeastrum is not the most durable flower; it can last in a sponge for about one week. Orchids are very sensitive: if you drop a drop on a bud while watering, the water that gets on the petals can cause stains.

Caring for tulips in a hat box

Tulips need to be moved from the box to the vase the next day

A bouquet of tulips in a hat box differs from the others in that a floral sponge is not placed at the bottom. Tulips are wrapped in a film with water and a nutrient mixture, which means that such a bouquet can last only one day without intervention. The next day, you should remove the flowers from the box, wash, trim and place in a vase with running but settled water and add a nutrient mixture.
