How to connect a thermostat to a boiler

For the efficient functioning of the heating system, it is necessary to take care of the correct installation of all its elements. In addition to boilers and pipelines, a temperature controller is also needed. It determines the current temperature of the air in the room, signals the boiler to increase or decrease the power. Modern heating boilers are usually already equipped with thermostats. But there are cases when you have to connect temperature controllers additionally.

The room temperature can be controlled in two ways: manually or automatically. Considering that it will be necessary to maintain optimal performance throughout the entire heating period, the manual method is inconvenient. Automatic regulators have much more advantages.

The most convenient devices for temperature control are modern, high-tech programmers. They transmit a signal about a decrease or increase in the air temperature in the room to the working part of the boiler, as a result of which the heating equipment reduces or increases power. The owner will not need to constantly monitor the operation of the heating system, and a comfortable temperature in the room will be maintained throughout the entire heating period. During the installation, problems should not arise if you know how to connect the thermostat to the boiler.

A thermostat or temperature controller is a device that operates in automatic mode according to a pre-set program. Its main function is to ensure that the room has an optimal and comfortable air temperature. If it is not there, the owner will have to experience discomfort due to the fact that the operation of the heating system will not be regulated. This is not only unforeseen heat or cold in the room, but also an unjustified waste of fuel.

The thermostat is set to a certain temperature. When the room temperature drops by only 0.25 degrees, the thermostat sends a signal to the boiler. The boiler switches on, the set temperature is reached again, and the boiler switches off again. And so constantly. Beforehand, the owner of the house should familiarize himself with how to connect the thermostat to the boiler in order to avoid possible troubles.

Note! It may seem that there is no fundamental difference between manual adjustment and automatic adjustment, however, this is not so. The second method allows you to significantly reduce the fuel consumption of the boiler.

The thermostat does not respond to the temperature of the coolant, but to the air temperature in the room, and as you know, the latter cools down much more slowly. The thermostat will not signal the boiler in such cases:

  • if the optimum temperature in the room is maintained by solar heat;
  • if the temperature delta decreases;
  • when there are a lot of people in the room and, accordingly, the temperature lasts longer;
  • if there are other factors that increase the air temperature.

Modern automatic programmers can significantly reduce fuel costs, so the heating system will work more efficiently with them. The only condition is that you need to know how to properly connect the thermostat to a gas boiler or other type of heating equipment.

Installation and connection

The efficiency of the heating system and comfort in the house directly depend on whether the owner knows how to connect the room thermostat to the boiler and where exactly to place it. It is not advisable to install it in the kitchen or bathroom, as the air temperature rises periodically there and the system may malfunction.

The programmer must be installed in a place where there is no thermal interference, that is, in a room where it would not be affected by extraneous factors, namely:

  • Sun rays;
  • radiators;
  • additional heaters;
  • draft;
  • electrical appliances that generate heat during operation.

Modern heating equipment has special channels through which the thermostat is connected. There are two options for connecting the thermostat to the boiler:

  • using a regulator cable;
  • using the terminal on the boiler.

To find out how to properly connect the thermostat to the boiler, you should look at the technical data sheet of the heating equipment. There are not only instructions, but also wiring diagrams. Connect the thermostat only in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. There is nothing complicated in connecting a thermostat, so you can do it yourself and without much difficulty.

Settings

Just connecting the temperature controller is not enough, it must also be configured. If this is a modern automatic programmer, there are buttons on its front panel with which adjustment is carried out. Regulators do not function by themselves, they require energy to operate. As a rule, thermostats run on batteries.

The thermostats come with instructions that describe how to set up the device. The main parameters that can be adjusted are:

  • heating intensity;
  • air conditioning level;
  • the time allotted for the operation of the boiler sensor, which prevents false alarms;
  • temperature range, this is an indicator below which the temperature of the air in the room cannot rise or fall.

Having the ability to adjust the temperature and other parameters, the owner will be able to save money on fuel. All models of modern programmers have pre-installed programs that contribute to the normal functioning of the heating system.

Types of regulators

There are several types of thermostats on sale, which allows you to choose the most suitable model in each case. The main classification criterion is functionality. There are devices with one option or with a whole set of them. Equipment can be wired or wireless.

Note! In order for thermostats to work properly, they need a constant supply of air. Do not force appliances with furniture or install them under curtains, paintings and other objects that prevent the flow of air.

Thermoregulators, like any other equipment, are constantly being improved, new technologies are used to create them.

  1. The room programmer is a compact, handy, portable thermostat. By installing it at home, you can change the operating modes. There are models in which you can set different temperature conditions for each day.
  2. The central thermostat is a device that is used to regulate the operation of the heating system of the whole house. Most often, such devices are installed in living rooms or bedrooms.
  3. Control valves do not react to the room temperature, but to the temperature of the coolant in the system. The valve is installed directly into the system itself using a tee. It is less convenient than modern thermostats, but their price is much lower.

To service the heating systems of large private houses, experts recommend buying a thermostat. There are schemes by which you can make a homemade thermostat. They are not as powerful as purchased equipment, but they are quite suitable for heating one or two rooms.
