Doorway without. Doorway without a door: necessity or design solution? Advantages of polyurethane stucco molding

The design of an opening without a door involves several features. Not all materials are suitable for this type of finishing, and the selected options will have to be handled quite carefully. Some structures can be created with your own hands, but the construction of others is best left to a professional.

Peculiarities

The logical conclusion would be that a doorway without a door is made entirely without a door frame. All decoration includes only the lining of the opening itself, which is done using a variety of materials.

The design of a doorless opening allows you to choose from a variety of shapes, including classic and interesting fancy options.

Not every room will have an opening without a door that will look appropriate. There are some rooms that must have a door, and these include not only the toilet and bathroom. The bedroom, kitchen, office must be equipped with a full door Since these rooms are larger than others, there is a need for privacy and intimacy.

However, every rule can be circumvented. For additional decoration of such openings, curtains, muslin, and screens are used. They allow you to create the illusion of dividing the room without completely replacing the door.

Decorating an open doorway implies relying on the integrity of the entire home. As a rule, identical doorless openings are made in an apartment or house. This applies to both shape and finish. They act as a connecting element, uniting all rooms into a single ensemble.

Speaking about the advantages that open openings have compared to classic doorways, we cannot fail to mention saving space. Each door takes up at least a square meter usable area. When creating a doorless structure, this problem disappears. From an aesthetic point of view, an opening allows you to visually expand the space or expand the functional area of the room by combining it with a utility room. A good example is common in Lately combining a balcony and a living room.

In some cases, a doorless space looks much more attractive than a door, especially when it is beautifully decorated. For example, shelves are often placed along the contour of such an opening. The figurines or other little things placed on them beautifully frame the skylight, creating a unique atmosphere that cannot be repeated. Thus, sometimes an open doorway looks even more intimate than a thick oak door.

Finally, another important advantage is creating sufficient ventilation in the apartment. Air circulates better through open space, and for small apartments, for example, like in houses built by Khrushchev, this factor is important - it allows you to combat stuffiness.

Creating several openings can completely change the original layout of the apartment, but in reality it comes out much cheaper than a full-fledged redevelopment.

In addition, it is often possible to create an opening even in a load-bearing wall, so there are many more options for a new apartment plan.

Kinds

There are many different configurations available doorways without a door, which differ from each other not only in their shape, but also in the material with which they are created. Along with traditional raw materials, we also use latest developments in the field of design.

The simplest in design is ordinary rectangular span. Creating a rectangular opening is very simple: the door frame is completely dismantled, then the surface of the walls is leveled along the contour. In the future, the resulting hole is simply painted or lined suitable material. There are a great variety of finishing methods, starting with the simple installation of wooden extensions and ending with the creation of pompous stucco columns.

More popular building arched structures. To do this, it is not necessary to expand the existing opening in the wall, but last years The idea of creating false arches is actively used. In this case, corner elements made of polyurethane or plasterboard with rounded sides are installed in the rectangular span, and the result is a full-fledged arch with much less cost and labor. However, this method is not suitable for all homes: it is necessary that the opening be of sufficient height.

There are several types of arches:

  • Rounded arch. It is a classic interpretation and can be used in absolutely any room, regardless of the parameters, but there is one unspoken rule. The lower the ceiling, the wider the arched span should be.
  • Trapezoidal span. It is created from straight lines and can only be called an arch conditionally. Designers do not recommend using this form because of its strong association with a funeral accessory - a coffin.
  • Triangular arch. Exists great amount subtypes of triangular arches: keeled, pointed horseshoe, Tudor. Similar items came to modern design from the Middle Ages, and they are used preferably in high, spacious rooms.

More and more often, people are abandoning the creation of ordinary classical openings in favor of fancy asymmetrical ones.

They can only be done in plasterboard partition walls. Asymmetrical openings can have any shape you like, and can also be supplemented with all kinds of auxiliary details: shelves, niches, lighting. This design acts as a bright element and sets the tone for the entire appearance of the room. Catching your gaze, an asymmetrical opening helps to hide possible flaws when renovating a room.

Dimensions

It is possible to balance the proportions of rooms in an apartment using doorways without doors. Depending on whether the opening is wide or narrow, high or low, the impression made varies.

For rooms with low ceilings, it is strictly not recommended to install narrow spans. Visually they will make the room tiny and uncomfortable. It is better to choose a wide option that will visually expand the area of the room, add air and light to it. This applies not only to arched openings, but also to rectangular ones.

Optimal height also depends on the original proportions of the room. If you want to use a skylight to combine two rooms, it is recommended to make it almost as high as the ceiling. An ordinary span, serving only as an alternative to a door, should be made significantly lower, but its height should not be lower than 2 m. In the case of arches, this figure increases by at least 30 cm. This is due not so much to aesthetic rules as to safety requirements: people may hit the upper narrow part of the arch hard in the dark.

When constructing asymmetrical structures, one should be guided by the following rule: the more intricate the shape, the wider the opening should be. Too much concentration of monograms and other elements on small space will overload the look, making the design unnecessarily pretentious and bulky. As a result, instead of a spectacular accent, you will get a tasteless option that you will soon get tired of.

Thus, the size of the doorway is largely determined by the characteristics of the room itself, and not by the chosen shape.

Remember that very wide doorways are best decorated using some kind of texture, for example, relief moldings. If you use ordinary smooth cladding, the light will be “lost” against the general background of the room and, from an aesthetic point of view, will not look particularly harmonious.

In various rooms

In the vast majority of cases, the advisability of installing a doorless opening is obvious, however, sometimes refusing a door is extremely undesirable. Some of the rooms where it is best to leave a door include the kitchen. This is especially true in small apartments, where a strong kitchen odor will be especially annoying. It's not always pleasant when scents are felt in the living room or bedroom.

The old boring interior of the living room can be changed beyond recognition, at the same time intelligently expanding the usable area. If you abandon the separate balcony block and the door to the balcony, you will be able to make the living room brighter. The balcony will certainly need to be furnished in a style similar to the living room, since the rooms, united by a doorless skylight, should be perceived as a single whole.

You can often encounter cases where the door is refused between the corridor and the dressing room. Since both of these spaces are quite small and cramped, this move helps hide this fact, allowing people to feel more free.

In small apartments, doors between the hallway and the living room are abandoned, especially if the apartment is one-room. This way the entire area is perceived as a single whole, making the home seem larger.

In cases where such a small apartment has low ceilings, it is better not to choose an arched shape as an opening. It is much more logical to focus on the classic rectangular span.

It is quite rare for people to refuse a door to the bedroom, but they do not dare to completely leave the entrance “defenseless”. They come to the rescue thick curtains or screens, which perfectly protect the intimacy of the room. If necessary, they can be easily and quickly dismantled. Interesting solution is the use of curtains with tiebacks: at night they can be completely closed, and during the day they will serve as a beautiful frame for the opening.

How to apply correctly?

The opening is cashed using different materials and in different techniques. You can decorate the interior space with your own hands, or you can turn to professionals who will create a complex and unique decor.

Good idea– decorate the doorway with curtains.

A decorative curtain plays the same role as a door psychologically, but it takes up much less space. If desired, the curtains can be removed completely without any problems or replaced with others, and the appearance of the opening structure will not be affected (for example, if you simply remove the door leaf, hinges will remain on the span, which do not look very attractive).

Another option for decorating a doorway without a door is to use additional elements registration – various stucco panels. With their help, it will be possible to improve any opening, regardless of how smooth walls and in what colors the opening is made. Finishing is extremely simple and is often done entirely independently.

With the help of stucco it is possible to decorate openings in different styles. For example, you can make a classic arch with columns and heavy shaped elements. If you add gilding, you will be able to completely recreate the spirit of baroque or classic. For modern interiors, it is more appropriate to use simple relief moldings with geometric patterns, for example, embossed lines and grooves. If in the first case it was appropriate to choose pilasters and capitals, then in the second they should be avoided.

Stucco molding can be found quite rarely; it has practically gone out of use recently. This is due to the relatively small dimensions of modern apartments, because intricate designs look ridiculous in small spaces. You shouldn’t completely abandon stucco elements: some of them can help expand the room.

Also, to design door openings without doors, artificial stone masonry, clinker tiles or plasterboard are often used.

Materials

Cladding a doorway without a door can be done using a variety of materials. The simplest solution is to paint the gap or cover it with the same wallpaper as the walls. However, there is one “but”: only perfectly smooth walls are suitable for this, otherwise the whole structure will look insufficiently neat and as if made hastily.

Another option is to make a box from the extensions and place it in the gap or cover it with MDF panels. In both cases, you will get a wooden aperture that looks stylish and can be harmoniously integrated into almost any interior.

Framing the opening is best done with wood valuable species or their imitation, since these are the solutions that look best.

It is also possible to cover the gap with plasterboard. Drywall is a truly unique material. With its help, you can form a structure of almost any configuration, supplementing it with elements from other lightweight materials, for example, polyurethane.

You can easily make a simple plasterboard opening yourself, and it will not take much time, and the effect will please you.

Often the gaps are lined with imitation stone or clinker tiles. Clinker tiles imitate brick, but they weigh several times less. They produce tiles in different shapes: there are classic elements, as well as special corner ones. There is a wide variety of sizes on the market, but medium-sized tiles are the most popular. The seams between the tiles are usually rubbed with a composition that exactly imitates the main covering of the walls.

Artificial stone looks more interesting than clinker tiles. There are imitations of various materials: limestone, marble, malachite and many others. This material has many advantages: such cladding looks expensive, harmonizes perfectly with other finishing materials, has a long service life and wear resistance, and is also very easy to maintain. Laying such material can be carried out either in a geometrically thought-out order, or chaotically - both options look equally successful.

Both tiles and stone are attached either with tile adhesive (when the walls under them are not well aligned) or with liquid nails (if the walls have a perfectly flat surface).

Options in the interior

A fairly simple opening with a slightly curved edge adds pomp and grandeur to the room. Its unusual structure is made in fairly restrained proportions: straight lines are used, and there is no complex decor. Almost flat square shape helps to visually maintain the proportions of the room without creating any visual illusions.

The use of natural materials is encouraged when creating the design of a doorless opening. Wood and raw stone harmonize well with each other, despite the fact that the wood was selected from a valuable species, and the stone was the most ordinary one. The play on contrasts deserves special attention: firstly, wood and stone of contrasting colors are used, and secondly, the smooth edge of the wooden frame is adjacent to the torn edges of the masonry.

Interior doors represent the most advanced option for zoning living space, providing proper level privacy of family members. If privacy is not required, zoning functions are assigned to the doorway without a door.

The absence of a door leaf is compensated by a slight increase in usable living space, more convenient options for placing furniture, and improved interior design, which is especially important when operating small-sized housing. Finishing a doorway without a door in a certain style is done taking into account design recommendations.

Doorless openings: design and installation features

The arrangement of such a structure involves the complete dismantling of the door frame, as well as the choice of the shape, size and decor of the opening in accordance with the interior of the adjacent rooms. The classic shape of the opening is a rectangle. The choice of arched structure is determined by the height ceilings, design features load-bearing walls and unloaded partitions.

As a rule, the basic and decorative finishing of an opening without a door prepared for modernization is made using the following materials:

  • Panel plastics;
  • Polyurethane stucco;
  • Natural or artificial decorative stone.

Additional decoration of openings is realized using screens and curtains. When choosing, materials that are easy to install and maintain and that do not lose their characteristics throughout their entire service life are popular.

Advantages of open openings

Hinged and sliding interior doors are important elements interior decoration. On the other hand, they take up a lot of space, so small apartments Ah, arranging a doorway without a door is justified in all respects.

Open openings create a visual effect of increasing the volume of connected rooms, help improve ventilation and improve the layout of the interior decoration. Doorways without a door are appropriate for connecting a living space with an insulated balcony space. Efforts expended and material resources help to fully or partially compensate for the shortcomings of the standard layout of city apartments, as well as standard designs of private houses of country and cottage type. An exception is the free layout of housing, which provides for arbitrary placement interior walls and partitions.

A characteristic feature of finishing a doorway without a door is the moderate cost of the materials used and the ability to master the entire scope of work with your own hands. The total cost of such finishing is lower than the price of the door and the cost of its professional installation.

A doorway without a door will become optimal solution for interior. As you can see from the photo in our article, such finishing can be implemented in any interior of any room. The owner of a house or apartment can complete all the work himself with a moderate investment of time and money.

Installation of slopes and plasterboard arches

A budget option for decorating a doorway without doors is based on the use of plasterboard:

  • The material is easily processed with ordinary tools;
  • The even and smooth surface of the panels reduces the amount of preparatory work to a minimum;
  • The reverse side of the material is characterized by excellent adhesion to gypsum polymer adhesives;
  • Moderate 20 year life plasterboard structures compensated by their affordable cost, simple installation, and a wide selection of surface decor.

To fasten the cladding of the arched structure, a frame is mounted from a mounting beam or a metal profile. For finishing surfaces with complex configurations, a thinner and lighter one is recommended. ceiling plasterboard, differing from wall ones by increased flexibility.

The use of moisture-resistant putty and connecting reinforcing tape greatly simplifies the sealing assembly seams. When choosing a putty, keep in mind that acrylic compositions differ high strength, while gypsum polishes well. This is especially important for paint and varnish decoration.

Decorating the opening with plastic

When designing doorways without doors, plastic panels are actively used. The offered range includes materials that perfectly imitate appearance and the texture of valuable wood species, natural stone and other, more expensive materials.

The plastic decor of a doorway without the use of a door must match the wall decorative covering in color, pattern, contrast and surface texture. Using the right combination of these characteristics, it is easy to visually increase the size of the opening and ceilings.

Self-installation of plastic cladding does not require professional qualifications. If they have certain skills, home craftsmen perform all the work on their own.

Advantages of polyurethane stucco molding

Polyurethane stucco molding can also be used to decorate the opening. For small-sized housing, materials with low-relief patterns are recommended. The choice of volumetric stucco molding is justified when decorating rooms with high ceilings.

The polyurethane surface is compatible with most paint coatings, therefore decorative design For openings without doors, artificial stucco has great potential. The material is securely fixed special glue, minimal weight does not load the wall of the opening, moderate heat resistance is compensated by the presence of fire retardant additives.

Features of finishing the opening with stone

The most beautiful and durable finishing decor is natural stone. The material is characterized by unique wear resistance, looks great in daylight and artificial light, and is fully accessible for adhesive installation.

The limited service life of artificial decorative stone is compensated by its light weight, affordable cost, and wide selection of color and texture options, including a perfect imitation of natural materials. It’s quite simple to decorate a doorway without an interior door with artificial stone yourself. This is facilitated by the excellent adhesion of the material to cement-polymer adhesives.

Options for laying stone cladding of the opening

In the first option, an edging with smooth edges is laid out; in the second, it is proposed to create a “torn edge” that is original in perception, consisting of fragments of stone laid out in a natural appearance. Before installing the stone cladding, a doorway without a door requires leveling and cleaning of remnants of the previous decor. To improve adhesion, the surface is primed with solutions compatible with the mounting adhesive.

The list of design ideas for finishing the opening includes the option of cladding with clinker materials that successfully imitate the appearance of natural stone or ancient masonry. Clinker is characterized by very high wear resistance and preservation of its original appearance throughout its service life.

Criteria for choosing classic and arched opening design

According to designers, arched structures provide more opportunities to improve the visual perception of the interior. The creation of arches is justified in rooms with narrow corridors, since not only the interior design is improved, but also the comfort of use of the premises.

In housing with standard ceilings Arches with a slight rounding look great. The corner radius of such structures exceeds the width of the doorway by slightly more than half. Gentle arches go well with different styles interior, visually increase the height of the ceilings.

To design openings in a house with high ceilings, classic arches are recommended, in non-standard version- trapezoidal, elliptical or original asymmetrical. For example, for a doorway without a door connecting the corridor and the living room, the choice of a design with slopes that imitate the appearance of semi-columns is justified.

Empire and Baroque styles look great in spacious rooms, but the presence large quantity decorative elements in small houses and apartments reduces the advantages of these styles to a minimum.

Designers are advised to give preference to symmetrical structures, decorated with low-relief polyurethane stucco molding or plaster relief overlays installed in the upper part of the opening.

The desire to make an arched structure on your own can be realized by purchasing an arched blank or mastering the skills of working with plasterboard panels.

What restrictions exist when arranging openings?

In some types of block walls and partitions, door frames are used as load-bearing elements. Dismantling the door frame can cause subsidence and the formation of cracks in the wall, so such openings should first be reinforced with a load-bearing frame.

Such a design will ensure uniform distribution of the load on the walls, which inevitably appears when openings are decorated with stone or finishing materials of similar weight.

In addition, you should think about the environmental friendliness of cheap plastic panels and the heat resistance of polyurethane finishing materials. The problem is solved by using high-quality branded plastic panels and polyurethane products with a high content of fire retardant additives.

Before complete or partial demolition of load-bearing structures, it is imperative to consult with specialists. IN apartment building you should start with the management company, in private - with BTI. They will tell you whether this can be done at all, and whether additional reinforcement is required.

The most common solution is to partially or completely remove the partition between the living room and the kitchen, the kitchen and the dining room, the bedroom and the loggia, the kitchen and the balcony, the corridor and the dressing room, the hallway and the living room.

Advantages and disadvantages of the solution

Among the advantages are improved ventilation, as well as a functional increase in area - a utility room can be connected to the main room. These pros easily turn into cons. Too much ventilation causes drafts. The smell from the kitchen spreads throughout the house. Curtains perfectly absorb grease in the air, trap dust and require frequent washing.

The non-standard nature of the solution is an undoubted advantage, but it also has its own reverse side. The interior of the apartment should be designed in the same style. It may not be easy to achieve this, but otherwise there will be disharmony.

The main disadvantages are poor sound insulation and the inability to privacy when necessary. It is worth noting that hanging drapery is much easier than installing a box and adjusting the sashes.

Suitable passage sizes

In many ways, the dimensions are determined by the parameters of the rooms. Properly calculated width and height allow you to visually correct the shortcomings of the premises. For example, wide passages, especially with gentle arches, will make an apartment with low ceiling more spacious, and narrow ones, on the contrary, will compress the already tiny space.

In any case, the entrance should not be lower than 2 m, and if it is an arch, it is better to place it higher so that the narrow parts of the arch are above the level of the shoulders and head. If the owner of the apartment wants to combine two zones to the maximum, then the entrance can be made almost to the ceiling.

The size of an asymmetrical arch depends on the intricacy of the shape. The more complex it is, the wider the passage should be so that the accumulation of decorations on a small structure does not make it pretentious. Textured decor sometimes has a positive effect on optical narrowing.

There are also trapezoidal ones - a broken structure created from several straight lines intersecting at obtuse and right angles. Not all designers love it because of its associations with funeral themes.

Asymmetrical

As a rule, such arches have one side straight and the other with a rounded arch. Although there are no rules here - every designer creates as he wishes. The only limitation is the wall material in which it is planned to place the fantasy arch: it can only be made in plasterboard partition or assembled from separate slats.

What to veneer with

To understand how to design a doorway without a door, you need to decide on the decoration of the premises. Since it faces two rooms at once, you need to consider how it will look from both sides, not forgetting about style and color nuances.

Wood and MDF

Wood trim is used in most historical styles. For these purposes, oak, ash, hornbeam and pine are most often used. The parts are sold ready-made, fastened with nails or self-tapping screws. A substitute for natural wood can be a material made from pressed fibers. The panels are attached with glue or liquid nails. How to decorate a doorway in this way, look at the photo.

Stucco molding

Polyurethane is a flexible and dense material from which the arch frame is often made. It also allows you to create an imitation of expensive gypsum stucco. Installation is carried out using special glue. Polyurethane can also be used to create columns on the sides of the doorway.

Polymer stucco molding does not break, cuts well, and is compatible with any assembly adhesive. Gypsum is nobler, but heavier and cannot withstand falls, so you need to work with it very carefully. In addition, installation requires special glue or gypsum mortar.

The surface can be left white or painted.

Stone and tile

Stone cladding is much heavier than wood or polyurethane. Before starting work, the walls are leveled using putty. The choice of glue depends on the weight of the stone: liquid glue is suitable for light slabs; for heavy slabs, a solution of cement, glue, lime and sand is prepared. The facing begins from the bottom and gradually rises, giving the bonding agent the opportunity to dry. Each element must be held against the wall until it sets. Excess must be removed immediately if it comes to the surface, otherwise it can spoil the final appearance.

Inlays made of wood or plastic, inserted between the rows of tiles, will help maintain the same thickness of the seams. They are easy to remove after the composition has dried.

The seams are decorated with grout, and the entire composition is decorated with a composition that adds shine. Artificial stone and clinker are highly wear-resistant, but their natural counterparts have much higher strength. For interior partitions they may be too heavy. Most often, the edges of the masonry are made uneven and torn, creating deliberate negligence and the effect of antiquity, which, in contrast, looks advantageous in modern interiors.

Plaster and paint

It’s easy to decorate a doorway with plaster yourself. Its installation does not require special skills. Before applying it, the base of the arch is leveled and treated with a primer. The paint is applied after drying. The relief depends on the shape and surface of the roller used.

Plastic panels

The panels bend well and fit easily even on non-standard shapes. The covering is attached with glue. The finished set consists of six trims (three on each side - top and sides) and three extensions. The top elements are not only flat, but also suitable for arches. If necessary, they can be easily cut with a hacksaw.

Corners are subject to harsh operation due to high traffic and need high-quality finishing. Plastic cannot boast of durability, but if treated with care it will last a long time. Among its advantages are ease of maintenance, the presence of grooves for wires, a variety of colors and imitation textures.

Drywall

GCR is durable, easy to install and easy to cut with a knife. It has good adhesion to any adhesives. They cover a frame made of metal or wooden profile. The frame is attached to the walls and ceiling. It can have any configuration. Its strength depends on the thickness of the profile and the distance between the prefabricated elements. The profile bends and cuts easily. The sheets are installed with self-tapping screws. The seams between them are puttied.

Stone, clinker, wood, MDF panels, simple painting or wallpaper are suitable for many styles: eco, scandi, loft, minimalism, ethno, country, kitsch and others. True, the last two finishing options look neat only with perfectly smooth walls. This applies most of all to painting, which emphasizes any unevenness, especially in the presence of decorative lighting.

How to decorate

  • Along the entire contour you can hang closed or open shelves, put up shelving. Thus, you will get things, books, trinkets.
  • If the arch is made of plasterboard, you can make through windows, niches, shelves for flowers or accessories a few centimeters from the passage.
  • The pomposity of the interiors will be added by facing the openings on the sides with plaster bas-reliefs, and on top with sandrik, that is, a slightly protruding cornice.
  • You can add to slopes Spotlights, or ready-made lighting for furniture.
  • Slopes can be decorated with extensions and platbands, which are made from wood, MDF and PVC panels. Together they give a finished look and expressiveness to the entire structure and can serve as one of the accents in the interior. The extensions come with or without grooves. The first type is preferable, since the joints between the planks will be less noticeable and will not require careful adjustment. Platbands are very different. They are often made from wood, pre-treated with insecticides, microorganisms and fire repellents. This material is unlikely to soon cease to be a favorite of designers and homeowners; it is very practical, aesthetic, environmentally friendly and versatile.

How to decorate a doorway with curtains

Not every room can be left open. A bathroom, for example, or a nursery needs intimacy. Someone can add their own office to this list if the work process requires silence, but for others it’s important to get rid of unnecessary sounds bedroom

However, even in this case you can play with different solutions. If the noise level does not matter, but you just want to isolate yourself from view, you can use screens or (both dense and not so dense). They will divide the room, but they will look lighter than doors and take up less space. In addition, both types of fabrics can be quickly removed and the passage completely freed. At the same time, the appearance will not be affected: there will be no loops or traces of locks left on it.

It is advisable to leave the passage clear. The fabric can get in the way, cling, and get dirty. If you secure it with tiebacks during the day, you will get a beautiful frame. It’s good when the design of the curtains matches the drapes or curtains on the windows. By the way, thick fabric can trap odors from the kitchen, but it will have to be washed or dry-cleaned often.

Blinds do the job just as well as curtains. And their vertical stripes raise the ceiling (horizontal stripes, respectively, push the walls apart) and perfectly complement their strict geometry modern interior.

We told you how to beautifully decorate a doorway. The main thing is that the finishing is environmentally friendly, does not cause allergies and looks good.

When updating the design of a private house or apartment, owners often resort to non-standard solutions. An example is an interior doorway without a door, which allows you to visually expand the living space. Our task is to tell you how to make a beautiful arched passage between rooms and decorate it with your own hands.

Options for non-standard openings

Open entrance openings are convenient and appropriate in rooms where doors are not initially needed, for example, between the hall and the hallway or kitchen. Another situation: you increased the width of the living room due to the loggia, removing the window and part concrete wall. The resulting wide portal must be refined, giving it the desired shape.

There are several options for finishing the doorway:

  • delete old box made of wood, plaster the ends of the walls, and then decorate with extensions and platbands;
  • replace the standard rectangular opening with an arch that can be decorated different ways(described below);
  • narrow the upper part of the lumen with bevels, giving it a trapezoidal shape;
  • make an original asymmetrical shaped skylight, shown in the photo.

Often the homeowner is faced with the task of reducing the size of a passage that is too large. In such cases, two options are practiced: to fill part of the opening with bricks or to assemble a frame from metal profiles and cover the gap with drywall.

We propose to consider the most popular method - how to finish a standard opening with plasterboard sheets (GKL), turning it into an arch. Having mastered this technology, you can easily create a trapezoidal or asymmetrical passage between rooms.

Making an arch from gypsum plasterboard

To decorate a doorway in the form of an arch, prepare the following materials:

  • ordinary plasterboard sheets 12.5 mm thick;
  • galvanized narrow profile 27 x 28 mm;
  • plastic arched corner;
  • primer deep penetration;
  • plaster mesh;
  • dowel-nails, self-tapping screws 3.5 x 25 mm for fastening gypsum boards;
  • gypsum plaster.

A passage that is too wide can be beautifully covered with plasterboard

At the first stage, preparation is made - you need to dismantle the box and, if necessary, level the walls with cement-sand mortar. Then carefully measure the width of the opening and calculate the bending radius of the future arch. To be sure, draw the outlines of the product on a sheet of paper, try it on in place and transfer the outlines to the drywall.

How to remake an ordinary opening into an arch with your own hands:

Note. It is better to make cuts to the profile and end strip of drywall more often. Too large segments will be noticeable - the arch will not be very round.

When finished, seal the joints and cracks. gypsum plaster, laying reinforcing mesh at the corners. After hardening, clean the surface with sandpaper and begin finishing. The manufacturing technology is demonstrated in detail in the video:

Ways to design an interior passage

The simplest and most cheap option finishing lining of an open opening - cover the ends with wallpaper plus hang a transparent curtain. The method is applicable in home renovation conditions, when wallpaper is re-pasted in two adjacent rooms, otherwise the difference will be noticeable.

How you can finish the opening in other ways:

  • mount decorative panels made of MDF or plastic, made in the form of platbands;
  • instead of wallpaper, make a mosaic of artificial stone or clinker tiles at the ends, imitating brickwork;
  • use ready-made gypsum stucco elements or imitation polyurethane;
  • sew up the ends with classic ones wooden platbands and extras.

Framing the arch with ready-made sets of platbands

Recommendation. The cladding option should be selected at the stage of forming the door clearance. If you buy a ready-made set of platbands made of polyurethane or MDF in advance, then the bending radius of the arch can be adjusted to the upper part.

We have listed the most common cladding options. There are other methods - application, and so on.

Lining the arch with plastic corners

It's simple and affordable way improve the arched portal at minimal cost. The materials you will need are flexible corners made of plastic or MDF and high-quality glue (liquid nails will do). Before installing the facing elements, the walls must be puttied and covered with wallpaper.

Advice. Choose plastic lining to match the color of the laminate and baseboards. Ideally, the finishing of the opening should look like a continuation of the floor edging.

The design of a doorway without a door with corners is carried out using the following technology:

Reference. Arched corners need to be bent along a wider shelf.

Finishing a standard rectangular portal is even easier - you don’t need to bend the material, just trim the ends correctly so that they fit nicely at the corners. More useful information You can learn about the use of corners from the video:

Clinker tile finishing

The color of artificial stone or clinker tiles is selected according to the color of the walls. To purchase required quantity material, it is recommended to mark the future drawing on the wall with a simple pencil. For finishing, a construction adhesive mixture such as Ceresit CM11 or liquid nails is used.

Options for facing artificial stone tiles

Substrate preparation includes leveling and applying a deep-penetrating primer. How to decorate an opening yourself with clinker tiles:

After the adhesive mixture has hardened, remove the slats and carefully clean the edges of the tiles. The final stage is grouting the joints with a composition that is in harmony with the interior of the room.

Installation of polyurethane stucco molding

Real gypsum stucco is distinguished by its considerable price, decent weight and fragility. Polyurethane imitation of columns, pilasters and overhead patterns looks no worse, but costs much less. In addition, plastic lends itself well to painting in any desired color.

Visually, polyurethane stucco is no different from gypsum

The technology for installing polyurethane moldings is similar to finishing with plastic corners. Each element is cut and adjusted into place, then glued to the walls on both sides of the opening. To join the shaped parts to each other, a special glue for plastic is used.

When the glue has dried, the cracks and joints must be puttied and carefully treated with sandpaper. Final stage– painting in the required color (preferably with an aerosol can or spray gun).

Use of wooden platbands

Before installation, wooden extensions should be treated with sandpaper and coated with 2-3 layers of protective varnish. The latter is selected according to the required color - you can use stain and transparent varnish or a composition with the addition of the desired dye.

Wooden cladding requires maintenance and periodic renewal

Produced in the classic way- on screws or nails. It is important to recess the fastener heads so that they are not conspicuous. At the top, the attachment points are carefully covered with putty and painted.
