Wooden sheathing

Steel frame

If you decide to decorate the walls with panels yourself, the metal version will be a more durable, but also more expensive lathing. The starting elements will be a U-shaped profile mounted under the ceiling, after which the same one is attached to the floor. Perforated guides are fixed in them, onto which the trim will be attached.

The guides must be secured to the wall with dowels or self-tapping screws, removing them to a distance of 90 cm, but no more. In order to save money, it is permissible to combine aluminum and wooden profiles, in this case the perimeter will be steel, and the racks will be made of wood.

Wall finishing can be done after installation plastic sheathing, which is somewhat more expensive than wood and is more demanding on the evenness of the wall. However, the advantage of such a design will be that the system does not rot and mold does not form on its surface. Criteria for choosing plastic panels for walls


In construction stores, the range of PVC panels is always large, so approach the purchase of goods responsibly. Pay attention to the following factors:
  1. Before attaching PVC panels to the wall, check that the front part is free of scratches, cuts, stains and other defects.

  11. Wall panels with a thickness of at least 10 mm, the thickness of ceiling panels is less.

Tools and materials for laying PVC panels on walls

Laying plastic panels on the wall on a frame


One of the options for covering a wall with panels is to attach plastic to a frame. The lathing allows you to install the covering without leveling the walls in any room.

The basis for the plastic coating is wooden beams or metal profiles. Wooden slats are chosen with a width of 40-60 mm and a thickness of 20-25 mm. For sheathing, buy well-dried lumber a little longer than the height of the wall; it is always easier to cut off the excess than to add the missing part. It is also advisable to impregnate all wooden blocks with a water-repellent composition.

Metal profiles are sold standard length, so the choice of length is limited. For sheathing, it is recommended to use a C-shaped rack profile. The material of the slats depends on the purpose of the room. For example, in the bathroom they install profiles from of stainless steel, the tree will quickly rot.

Wall covering with PVC panels is carried out as follows:

  • Clear the walls of old decorative covering. Inspect the surface for the presence of fungus or mold, remove the damaged surface if necessary.
  • Treat the wall with an antiseptic.
  • The placement of profiles on the wall depends on the orientation of the panels - horizontal or vertical. In a vertical orientation, the slats are first attached to the top and bottom of the walls.
  • The bottom rail is fixed near the floor to secure the baseboard. Then, in the corners of the wall, the walls are aligned vertically and vertical profiles are attached, while their outer surfaces should lie in the same plane with the surfaces of the already fixed slats.
  • Allowable gaps under the ceiling depend on the method of covering the ceiling. If the ceiling is finished with PVC panels, make the gap wide. Otherwise, attach the bars as high as possible.
  • When fixing the slats, it is necessary to control their position in the horizontal plane with a level and their vertical position using a plumb line. Any gaps between the profiles and the surface are sealed with wooden spacers.
  • The internal battens should always be perpendicular to the long side of the slabs. They are placed in increments of 40-60 cm. During installation, the bars must be parallel to the slats fixed along the perimeter of the wall, and located in the same plane as the upper and lower slats.
  • Using a plumb bob, mark vertical lines on the wall in the corners of the room to attach the starting and finishing or corner profiles. Attach the starting (corner) profile to the vertical batten with a stapler, guided by the vertical mark.
  • Attach the horizontal starting profile to the top profile. Measure the distance between the top starting profile and the floor.
  • Cut the panel sheet from the blank to size.
  • Insert the first sheet into the groove of the starting profile.
  • Check the vertical position of the sheets with a level.
  • If the results are satisfactory, secure the panel to the sheathing with a stapler. Insert the second panel into the groove of the first sheet, slide until the seam between them disappears and secure. Check its position in the vertical plane.
  • Repeat the operation to lay all the panels until the end of the wall.
  • The last sheet is attached in a special way. First, attach the finishing profile to the sheathing. Then measure the gap between the penultimate sheet and the finishing profile and cut the extra piece along the sheet to size. To install, bend the panel slightly and place it in seats sheet and finishing profile. The last sheet is not attached and is held in place only by the profiles.
  • If it is necessary to finish the walls of the room along the perimeter, a corner profile is installed in the corner, attached to the wall, and then cladding of the next wall begins.

Fastening PVC panels to walls using tape


The opinion that plastic modules are attached only to the sheathing is long outdated. Under certain conditions, do-it-yourself wall finishing with PVC panels is done on soft lathing or glue method.

Installation on a soft sheathing involves the use of double-sided foam tape with a width of 60 mm and a thickness of 2-4 mm. Scotch tape is very viscous and elastic; when a load is applied, it stretches, and after removal it returns to its original form.

Laying panels on soft sheathing is done as follows:

  1. Clean the walls from paint, wallpaper, and peeling plaster.
  2. Level the surface with putty. Irregularities and protrusions with a depth of no more than half the thickness of the tape are allowed.
  3. Cut the panel blanks to the height of the wall.
  4. Draw vertical lines on the walls along which the panels will be aligned.
  5. Glue the tape to the wrong side of the sheet, around the perimeter.
  6. Remove the protective tape from the tape and glue the panel to the wall as quickly as possible, following the mark on the wall.
  7. Check the verticality of the panel with a level.
  8. Fix the adjacent panels in a similar way, check that they are vertical and that there are no differences with the adjacent sheet.
  9. After finishing the work, attach the plinth to the top and bottom of the lining. Another option is to install starter profiles instead of baseboards.

Fixing PVC panels to walls with glue


This method is used if the wall is perfectly leveled with putty or finished plasterboard sheets. The advantage of an adhesive connection is the absence of lathing, which allows you to maintain the size of the room.

The panels are glued as follows:

  • Clean the wall of old coating. If the surface is painted oil paint, then the coating does not need to be removed, but only primed.
  • Carefully level the surface into one plane using putty, layer thickness - 2-4 mm. If the base wall is poorly processed, all irregularities will appear on the panels.
  • Prime the surface with an antiseptic primer.
  • Attach the starting profile to the top or bottom of the ceiling.
  • Clean the surface of the panel from dust.
  • Apply glue to the underside of the sample in wavy lines. Wait 5 minutes, then install into the starting profile and glue to the wall.
  • To form corners, use regular plastic corners 20x20 mm without grooves for lining.
The process of finishing the wall with the adhesive method is accelerated, but the glue does not hold very heavy modules. You should also not use adhesive joints in the kitchen, shower, or gym.

While working, use the following recommendations:

  1. Bring the material into the room several hours before work, this way you can avoid deformation of the coating after installation.
  2. It is advisable to finish the walls after finishing the ceiling and floor, this will make it easier to finish the corners of the room.
  3. Various components can be hidden behind PVC panels; provide removable panels to access them.
  4. Determine in advance the locations of sockets and switches and cut openings in the sheets.

However, this does not mean that such installation does not require additional training. The latter directly depends on the purpose of the room.

In rooms with stable temperature and humidity - such as living rooms, as a rule - it is enough normal removal from the walls of the old peeling coating using a spatula, carefully inspecting for cracks, crevices and chips and, if necessary, sealing them with putty or plaster.

If temperature changes and humidity in a room are a common occurrence (think, for example, about bathrooms, kitchens, balconies), you will additionally need.

Waterproofing layer using a roller or paint brush applied to pre-moistened walls. And after it dries, the walls are processed.

Most often, the sheathing is made of either wood or metal.

Wooden blocks of at least 20x20 mm in thickness are cheaper, but they are less durable and are not suitable for rooms with high level humidity. Therefore, before use, they must be dried thoroughly (the permissible moisture content of the wood should not exceed 12-15%) and must be treated with an antiseptic to protect against rot and insects.

The metal profile is more expensive, but suitable for any premises, stronger and more durable. In this case, a distinction is made between the UD profile, with the help of which the outline of the sheathing is formed, and the CD profile inserted into it, which serves as intermediate elements (guides).

But regardless of the material, before installing it you need to stock up on:

  • building level and plumb line - to determine the position of the main elements of the sheathing;
  • dowels - for attaching it to the wall;
  • screws - for fastening its elements to each other;
  • tape measure - to measure the distance between the guides;
  • material for supports under the guides - wood or thick plywood;
  • a screwdriver and a drill - to make work easier.

To cut a metal profile, you will need metal scissors. For extra work With wooden blocks– a saw with medium teeth, a chisel, a mallet.

Installation of sheathing to the wall

Installation of the sheathing can be divided into several stages

Marking the frame for wall panels

It begins with determining the lower level, running along the floor in such a way that subsequently the baseboard can be screwed onto it. The “reference point” in this case is the most protruding part of the wall: focusing on it, determine the distance by which the sheathing will subsequently retreat from the wall.

If we are talking about wooden beams, another 2-3 mm is added to this distance as a discount for their possible unevenness.

Then comes the determination of the top level, running along the intended ceiling height, and then the side levels. When installing the upper and lower levels, you must use a building level, and when installing the side levels, use a plumb line.

Bringing the frame to the proper level

In general, all levels are not attached to the walls tightly, but on straight hangers, maintaining the required indentation. The outer edges of the sheathing should be located at the same level, which can be adjusted either by grinding off the sheathing bars or using backings.

The distance between the screws on which the profile is attached should be 20-25 cm for a wooden profile and 15-25 cm for a metal profile.

Fastening the guides inside the frame frame

To begin with, they cover all protruding wall elements, as well as window and door openings.

The purpose of this action is to securely secure the edges of the sheathing elements along their boundaries. Then intermediate profiles are mounted.

When installing them, you need to take into account how the PVC panels will be fastened - horizontally or vertically: they are fastened perpendicular to the guides.

Wooden blocks (for wooden sheathing) and CD profiles (for metal sheathing) are inserted into the frame frame and secured with screws at the edges. To give the metal profile additional rigidity, it is recommended to use U-shaped profiles - they are screwed to its guides after the profile is installed and secured.

Naturally, when carrying out of this type do not forget to use a building level. But now the sheathing is ready. And it’s time to start installing PVC panels.

How to attach?

To do this you need to stock up:

  • plastic panels, which must “acclimatize” before starting work by staying in the room intended for finishing for at least a day;
  • moldings, that is, special corner profiles that ensure smooth joining;
  • clamps - special brackets for fastening;
  • a building level, which helps to accurately determine the location of the first PVC panel on the sheathing, which serves as a guide for further installation;
  • a special knife or metal file for cutting panels.

The installation of PVC panels does not begin with the installation of moldings - internal and external: it is from them that you will have to build on in the future.

The first panel is installed with a tenon in the profile, attaching it to the sheathing using clamps. The second panel is installed in the groove of the previous one and fastened in the same way. In this way they reach the end of the wall.

The latter is cut in such a way that it can be installed all the way into the finishing corner, while the distance between its tenon and the groove of the previous panel should be 2-3 mm.

The cut edge is inserted into the profile, then the panel is pulled out and connected to the previous panel.

If it is necessary to hide moldings, the technology for installing plastic wall panels becomes more complicated. The first panel is attached strictly in the very corner, the next one – close to it. A tenon is removed from one of the corner panels, resulting in a groove at the end.

This panel is pushed onto hook brackets installed on the second profile. The next corner panel is inserted into the starting profile.

Installation of PVC panels without lathing

The essence of installing panels without lathing is to glue the panels directly to the wall. And its main difficulty is in the preparation of walls, which require careful alignment, and correct selection adhesive composition.

The initial preparation of the walls is the same as with the frame method: the old coating is removed and the cracks are sealed. It is, of course, difficult to perfectly level the wall, but the permissible size of differences, bumps and holes should not exceed 5 mm, otherwise peeling or damage to the plastic is possible.

And taking into account the fact that a dusty, dirty and greasy surface is not able to provide sufficient adhesion to any adhesive, there is a need for high-quality cleaning walls: washing off whitewash, cleaning from grease detergents, priming.

  • after drying it becomes transparent and forms a film layer;

Hot melt adhesive should not be used to attach the panels.

It provides too rigid a fixation and, “interacting” with plastic, which has a considerable coefficient of thermal expansion, deprives panels made from it of free movement, thereby facilitating their separation from the walls.

More reliable non-expanding polyurethane sealant and liquid nails - their sufficient plasticity does not allow the panel to come off the wall during temperature fluctuations.

PVC panels are glued to the wall like this:

  • take the panel and wipe it from the back with a damp cloth to remove dust;
  • on back side glue is applied in a dotted manner, the distance between drops of which varies from 25 cm to 35 cm;
  • then the panel is applied to the wall.

If liquid nails were used when trying to glue it, it is better to tap it and tear it off: this type The glue requires airing for 5-7 minutes - only then will it acquire additional rigidity and will not allow the panel, after pressing it again, to lag behind the wall until it is completely dry.
