About ten or twenty years ago, the most prestigious car for the population of Russia was, of course, the VAZ "nine" and its modifications to the three-door hatchback (2108) and sedan (21099) bodies. Times have changed, people, despite the raging crises from time to time, became a little richer, and automakers adjusted to new realities.

The first idea of ​​a budget car caught in the Ford company and in 2002 began production of a truly popular Focus model. This hatchback, and more often a sedan, became the best-selling car in Russia every year, until the budget wave was picked up at Renault. Their Romanian Dacia Logan sedan under the pleasant Russian ear by the French brand began to be assembled in 2005 at the newly opened Avtoframos factory in Moscow.

As it turned out later, before the start of the financial crisis of 2008–2009, the idea of ​​creating a cheap car for fast-growing countries was being hatched in three more car companies - Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia. Now, when the consequences of economic stagnation have not yet subsided, these models were very helpful. The first appeared national sedan Polo, immediately became a bestseller in the class of «B +». But after a few months, Hyundai Solaris, a direct competitor, began to step on his heels, now holding unconditional leadership in the number of cars sold, three times as high as the Polo. Now "Solaris" is collected in three shifts in the hope of releasing 13 thousand cars before the end of 2011, but the queues have already stretched for more than a year.

However, in the Korean concern Hyundai-Kia they were preparing another weapon, which they also dubbed “a car made especially for Russia”, although the main market for the new sedan is still China. Instead of the name K2, assigned to the model in the Middle Kingdom, the Russians chose a more familiar one - Rio, because such a machine has already been sold to us and has established itself well.

We decided to put all three newly-made sedans together to find out who has more chances to influence the balance of power in the youth budget segment of cheap foreign cars, and also why it is better to give your accumulated or not your credit money.

All three cars are equipped with 1.6-liter petrol engines: the VW Polo is a 105-strong "four" with a maximum torque of 153 Nm, under the hood of the Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris lies a more powerful 123-horsepower engine with a maximum load of 155 Nm. But the German unit requires less revolutions to reach both peak values, so the difference is almost not pronounced in dynamics, although the passport acceleration is the slowest for a German car.

The Solaris sedan is behind the scenes, for it is he - the only one of all participants - who is equipped with five-speed mechanics, and the torque converters of the other two rivals steal too much energy from the engines. But at the Polo “automatic” called Tiptronic has six steps, instead of four Korean, and therefore more economical: on the highway fuel consumption does not exceed 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers, and rises above nine in the city only in rare cases in traffic.

Acoustic comfort is better thought out in Hyundai and Kia - all other things being equal, the engine compartment of the Polo sedan is less well isolated, and the sound of the engine even at low revs brings to mind the rattling of diesels, oh, their acceleration performance. In Korean twins, the ears are much more comfortable, the engines begin to howl only at high revs by a characteristic annoying hum, after which you don’t want to go out for another overtaking, especially with Kia's automatic rifle twice as difficult to do than with Hyundai's mechanics. In this classification, the German sedan has an advantage - the very Tiptronic, that is, the manual gearshift mode, which allows you to prepare the car in advance for the maneuver.

Polo and Solaris are boring in control, their steering wheels at any speed sluggishly dangle from side to side, and adequate reactions of the car are out of the question. Kia has the same problem, but the car gives the driver imaginary confidence, as the Rio “bagel” is filled with a pleasant effort, which, however, is lost with increasing speed. In addition, the rear shock absorbers on all Kia are tougher than the second “Korean”, because they started to install them on Hyundai only from August 15, and our test sample was released earlier. Otherwise, the whole structure of the "Koreans" is the same: the rack type "MacPherson" in front and a twisted beam in the back.

The same scheme and the VW Polo, because on all three cars to go through the pits and potholes unpleasant. But Kia and Hyundai when meeting with a high and “rough” lying policeman literally crack at the seams, while the Volkswagen Polo with all its strength keeps the onslaught of unevenness, and its suspension is given a dull blow to the racks at greater speed than the “Koreans”.

There is something to answer and Rio with Solaris: they slow down better, because all the brakes in these cars are disc (front 256x22 mm, rear 262x10 mm), while Volkswagen has drums on the rear axle, and absolutely in any configuration, including the topline Highline. Last but not least, the Kia-Kumho Solus KH17, which has the size 195/55 R16, also sets tires as the base for the Ford Fiesta and Focus, the Volkswagen Polo and Golf hatchbacks, and the Opel Corsa and Astra in Europe. In order to save Volkswagen had to turn to domestic suppliers and choose the brand Kama Euro. During the test drive, we accidentally damaged the trunk of the Hyundai Solaris about an unknown tree branch. Sure, if you remove the hood, headlights, bumper at the Kia Rio, all of them can be safely outweighed on the Hyundai Solaris without buying additional adapters and mounts. It is not excluded that Chinese car manufacturers will soon release headlight blocks and false radiator grilles, which will allow replacing Peter Schreier with parts of Solaris instead of Peter's Tiger Smile, and vice versa.

The main difference between the "Koreans" - food, which Kia Rio sticks up a little more than in the "Solaris", and gives an advantage in the volume of the luggage compartment: 500 liters versus 454 x, respectively. The trunk of the Volkswagen Polo holds 460 liters of luggage, but thanks to its lower loading height, it is easier to put things into a German sedan. The Polo opening is the same as that of the Rio, but if you fold the backs of the rear seats, the hole behind them in the “German” is wider than the identical ones of the “Koreans”, and the flat floor does not work in all three cases, but the seats of the “Koreans "Go a little lower. "German" is inconsistent in the details, it has a one-touch turn signal operation mode - an extremely useful option, but there is no dashboard backlight adjustment in any of the configurations. Strange, isn't it?

Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris is a youth version, and the point is not only in bold design, but also in equipment. This car looks the best inside, equipped with the richest of all and is not inferior in dynamics Volkswagen Polo with a 6-speed automatic transmission. But seriously, 1.6 ICE versus 1.4 at KIA pleased. Consumption in the city, with traffic jams of 8 points, I went to 8.7 liters. As well as on Kiryukh. But he falls down compared to 1.4 Kia. In RIO, the pickup begins only after 3 thousand revolutions, and when overtaking or aggressive driving, revolutions always have to be kept at a level.
